Ideas Generation Report
I plan to include stories about crime and local news first and foremost to appeal to my
target audience of local teenagers. My market research allocated that teenagers are most
interested in negative stories on local news, tragedies and crime such as shop fires or armed
robberies for example. Teenage males would also prefer to read sports news so I plan to
include a football story or maybe something to do with rugby. I want to make my paper as
informative as possible so I will also include weather news to widen the audience and
maybe a gig guide to attract teens that enjoy going out to watch bands or club nights. I plan
to follow the conventional house style of a newspaper using a black and white colour
scheme throughout. On certain articles or maybe next to my masthead I will use a yellow
colour scheme to symbolise power. This will attract all ages as everybody is obsessed with
power and it is also a bright colour to catch the reader’s eye. I will also use an
unsymmetrical layout to attract teenagers who are rebellious and unruly. I will include big
and bold sans serif headlines filling up a lot of the page to stand out dominantly. I will use
either a serif or medieval style font to make my paper seem trustworthy and truthful and
also widen the audience attracting much older demographics. The formality of my paper
depends on the article content. I will use informal language primarily to appeal to the
younger audience my paper is aimed at but for crime stories, weather and tragedies I will
use formal language. I will attempt to use alliteration, play on words, repetition and rhymes
to attract the reader, give a greater impact and make the story stick in their mind. On Adobe
Photoshop I will use print based editing techniques such as hue and saturation,
contrast/brightness, the spot healing brush tool, spell check on Microsoft word and image
cropping. I plan to use large photos, big headlines and less text on my front cover to appeal
to my target audience of teenagers. I will make the text big and bold to stand out
dominantly on the cover and catch the reader’s eye. Mostly landscape photos so I can fit in
more photographs of text unless it is a full body shot of a person then I will use large
portrait photos. I will use many different photos focusing on one story and create a
montage. I also plan to use formal and informal balance in my photography and rule of
thirds. My use of high and low angles will convey dominance in my photography of people. I
also plan to use a lot of iconography in my newspaper. A sans serif masthead would be
iconic of locals for an informal audience. A serif gothic masthead would be iconic for a more
formal paper. Pictures of Carlos Tevez or Sir Alex Ferguson would be iconic of sport. A photo
of Manchester cathedral or the town hall would be iconic of Manchester city. A picture of a
car crash or the motorway would be iconic of traffic news or tragedies. A small picture of
Rita Ora would be iconic of pop music and would attract a female audience and a picture of
Gary Barlow would be iconic of the X Factor and Take That.
