Double Page spread Analysis
This double page spread features Limb Bizkit, a Nu Metal band from America, their
genre is a mix between hard Metal and Hip-hop as their front man screams down the
microphone and raps in-between. The target audience For this band would be males aged
16-35. Hip Hop elements are shown through the bands bald heads as a typical metal
guitarist has stereotypically got long hair. Other aspects of Hip hop are represented
through the front mans baseball cap; this is a big convention of the hip hop genre, and his
matching Nike jacket show they have gangster elements as no metal band would wear
Nike hooded jackets. The whole band use direct address to involve the audience but only
one member is smiling. This member could widen the audience for the band as nice
people as well as gun toting gangsters will listen too the band. The smiling members T-
shirt is white connoting purity and showing the audience it isn’t all death, depression and
rapping. The black outfit that the front man is wearing connotes death, danger and
depression, all mega conventions of Metal and Hip hop while his uninviting expression
fits with the outfit well. The band member furthest to the right also has a violent and
intimidating expression showing they are serious about their music and can fight well,
another convention of hip hop, he is also wearing a Guinness t-shirt showing the band
takes drugs to experiment with their music. He has a tattoo which is another convention
of Hip Hop and metal. The two band members furthest away also look angry and the one
on the right has spiky hair, an aspect of metal, and the one on the left has a short beard
and dark sunglasses on which conveys a mysterious feeling about him and he looks
slightly like a bouncer. They all look like tough males and the black and white gives it an
old hip hop feeling. The font used is cracked expressing violence and attracting youths

with its disorderly feel. The use of bold text stands out against the rest and the dominant
Red font could connote danger, death, violence etc.
This Arctic Monkey’s double page spread appears in the NME and contrasts completely
to that of the Limb Bizkit double page spread. Violent colours aren’t used as the target
audience for Arctic Monkeys isn’t Metal and Hip Hop followers. The target audience for
the Arctic monkeys is primarily males 14-30 but many girls also listen to them as well as
boys. The genre is Indie and a lot more mainstream than Limb Bizkit as the songs talk
about love etc. to widen the bands fan base. The handwriting like font used shows the
bands intelligence, wealth and sophistication. The bolder font shows they still have
aspects of their first album which was a lot less experimental. The black against white
dominant contrast stands out and catches the reader’s eyes. The greyer font below used
for the paragraphs doesn’t draw your eyes away from the Masthead and main picture as it
is in the terminal optical area. In similarity to the Limb Bizkit spread, The whole band
use direct address to involve the readers, but their expressions aren’t violent as such, they
look bored as if they are used to being the centre of attention. The front man looks
innocent, shocked and slightly happy to attract the audience but overall they don’t look
too bothered about the photo shoot.. This expresses their fame and status. The main
colours used in the main picture are different shades of blue. This will attract a male
audience as this colour appeals the most to them. The mustard trousers the front man is
wearing makes him stand out from the rest and high key lighting is used to give the
picture a positive feel. Most of their hairstyle are the same connoting a new musical
direction and showing they have been influenced by all sorts of music whilst creating
their new album. The short hair of the drummer widens the audience for the band also.
He leans on the band member furthest to the left showing his support and their

relationship together being guitarist and drummer. Their Denim shirts and outfits are
conventions of the indie rock genre and shows they are fashionable to attract women to
their music and look good.
Both Double page spreads are effective but in my opinion the Limb Bizkit cover gets the
bands personalities and genres across the best and would appeal to the primary audience a
lot more.
