This document summarizes research into the use of microblogging both inside and outside the workplace. The researchers analyzed posts and interviewed users of an internal microblogging tool called BlueTwit and the public tool Twitter. They found key differences in post categories, styles, and motivations between internal and external use. Internally, microblogging was used more for asking questions, directed communication, and reputation among colleagues, while externally it focused more on sharing information and self-promotion. Both platforms were useful for fostering connections and accessing timely human-selected information.

NLC/MS Government 2.0 - Enterprise Social Networkingguestb5e7e1c
Enterprise Social Computing is all the rage in the world of intranets and portals. The rise of blogs and wikis on the Web has prompted governments across the globe to put these and other social tools to use behind the firewall.
Why?
• To harness, capture, and learn from the knowledge of its employees…especially those who will be retiring soon.
• Improve policy outcomes
• More efficient use of government information
• Streamline internal operations
• Attract top talent
• Greater transparency through information dissemination
Imagine if social networking tools like blogs and wikis could be used as a means of interaction by the federal government bodies. Governments could interact to a far greater extent with citizens as well as with internal and external resources.
Shannon Ryan, President and CEO of non-linear creations, who has cemented his position in an international network of internet authorities, and is a regular and reliable source of information for the media about web strategy, execution and metrics, will demystify the concepts surrounding social computing.
The presentation will:
1. Give the broader market context for the rise and popularity of social computing.
2. Show you how you can benefit from social computing in your space.
3. Give a real “how to start” road map for building the framework to benefit from social networking.
4. Provide some lessons learned already from clients in this new fast moving space.

Abstract:
Software development stakeholders require a constellation of tools to support their communication, collaboration and coordination activities. But poor tool integration can lead to gaps in knowledge flow, or worse, to an overabundance of shared communication and information. The software development community is witnessing the rise of "social bots" to integrate diverse development and communication tools and to address the challenge of information overload. A bot is a conversational user interface that can automate rote or tedious tasks. It may fetch or share information, extract and analyze data, detect and monitor events and activities in communication and social media, connect developers with each other or with other tools, or it may provide feedback on individual and collaborative development tasks. Some bots are emerging as important team members, providing support for individual and team task management and for the automation of dev-ops and customer support. However, the rapid adoption of bots and the platforms that support them brings possible drawbacks. Designing effective platforms for bots is challenging and bots may introduce alienation among stakeholders or lead to other technical challenges. In this talk, I will discuss the emerging role of bots in software development and describe some of the advantages and challenges that may lie ahead.

The use of social media in the workplace is growing. One anticipates this trend to continue as more and more individuals comfortable with social media join the workforce. Social media provides an opportunity for organizations to obtain a real-time understanding of various aspects of the employee experience. For organizations to truly benefit from this aspect of social media, there is a need to build tools that allow an organization to make sense of the large scale unstructured data generated by social media. In this talk, I will first introduce a tool named Social Pulse that enables an organization to understand the social media chatter and sentiment of its employees. Social Pulse provides text and sentiment analysis, search and filtering, and several visualization features while respecting employee data privacy. I will then discuss how the data generated through Social Pulse can lead to insights that can improve outcomes of interest to an organization, such as employee engagement and performance.

Microblogging is synonymous with twitter, or at least it seems that way. In reality Facebook and many other social networking environments have adopted this communication paradigm extremely successfully.
The question really is how does this play in the enterprise space? Ian McNairn will discuss how IBM has adapted to this social computing phenomenon and exploits it internally extensively.
He will look at some of the reasons behind the exponential growth in activity as well as the tools and clients being used both within and outside IBM.

· Week 3 Discussion (please read carefully and cover all the basis/questions/discussion topics. Single space please. Include reference.
Updated
You must explain the importance of cost accounting to the CEO. But before you do that you also must explain how costs are classified, allocated, and assembled. Based on this week’s readings, discuss ONE of the following questions for your initial response to this week’s discussion (try not to replicate other’s responses):
· Specific Rules for Discussions
· Discussion response - your response to the discussion question should be between 150 - 300 words.
· Peer responses - Must be a minimum of 100 - 200 words and a maximum of 300 words for peer responses.
· Must provide a minimum of at least one (1) reference in your discussion andpeer responses.
· There are two (2) required peer responses due per week.
f) Identify ONE method of allocating costs and an advantage and disadvantage of that approach. ( this is the topic you will discuss)
Once you posted your initial discussion based on the above, respond to TWOof your fellow classmates’ answers in an area different from what you responded to initially. In responding, either constructively expand on their statement or add another advantage, disadvantage or example. Make sure you are properly citing your sources if you are using information from another source (i.e. textbook, internet).

“Cell phones” at work are not new. Nor are smart phones. Many credit
Blackberry for inventing the concept, but few would argue that Apple with its
iPhone, more than other device created this explosive phenomena called
BYOD – Bring Your Own Device to work.
Most of what BYOD seems to represent so far is an unbalanced equation in
favor of employees. Employees may be happier because they can carry their
favorite device to get company email, but it is not clear that employers are
happy with the results. Keep in mind, that 90%+ of BYOD activities are
email, calendar, personal banking, news, family life coordination, Twitter
and Facebook, but little else.
In my conversations with business and technology leaders, many
organizations are asking themselves if the fully loaded costs of
~$5.50/month/employee, in addition to any device or services subsidy, is
worth it to the company.
If BYOD 1.0 is about employees, what might a BYOD 2.0 look like?
What are enterprises looking to get out of BYOD going forward? With this in
mind, I have been asking a lot of CIO’s, Directors of IT and other smart
people what they think.
Once such person is Yaacov Cohen, CEO of harmon.ie, a fast growing
enterprise mobility company. Yaacov talks to senior executives around the
world about how better collaborated ideas and increased productivity can
take place via personal use of mobile devices at work – and he has some
pretty interesting insights to share.
1. Yaacov, how do we move from this Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Let's explore what people are building, how they are doing it and where it is happening in labs, schools, start-ups, corporations and homes.
Making sense of your Digital WorkplaceSam Marshall
One of the challenges of a modern intranet is that the boundaries are becoming blurred by the growth of social and collaboration tools, mobile access and cloud applications. In this evolving landscape, intranets remain highly important, but the roadmap needs to plan for the digital workplace as a whole. Based on hands-on experience of developing strategy, Sam Marshall shows how approaching this from an employee perspective can bring clarity and purpose, but also how the emphasis needs to be as much on management as on technology.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
