Mobile Marketing & China's Market, by StraydogStraydog
Why you should include mobile marketing and mobile web in your marketing strategy, and an in depth look at China’s mobile market.
Presented by Straydog Marketing + Design
The document discusses the digital divide, which refers to unequal access to computers and the internet across different social groups. It identifies several key barriers to access including a lack of interest, skills, opportunities, income, education, and infrastructure. The divide exists both between and within countries, with developing nations, poorer households, and those with less education generally having less access and slower internet speeds. Addressing the digital divide requires understanding these barriers and working to expand infrastructure, skills, and availability of affordable broadband internet access.
The document discusses how mobile phone adoption has impacted markets in Africa. It notes that with mobile phones, the boundaries between livelihoods and personal lives have become blurred. Mobile phones have helped extend markets by reducing information costs and price dispersion, particularly for agricultural goods. However, the impact on productivity and market institutions is unclear with qualitative effects being difficult to measure. Challenges include evaluating impact, designing inclusive and sustainable business models, and developing technologies that address issues like infrastructure, literacy and usability. Policies are also needed to encourage innovation through public-private partnerships and regulate competition and consumer protection.

The internet is also fragmenting traditional media like books, music and films by emphasizing immediacy over original thought. Looking ahead, the document predicts that the internet will further blur lines between media like integrating television and computers, allowing live TV and radio on mobile devices, and enabling new forms of interactive entertainment.
Fixed broadband in Zimbabwe is provided through ADSL, fiber optic networks (FTTX), and leased lines. While all three have seen growth in subscriptions, fiber optic connections have increased the most significantly since 2015. Zimbabwe's national fiber backbone connects most major cities, though expansion is still needed. International internet connectivity comes through undersea cables landing in neighboring countries, making domestic access relatively expensive. Mobile broadband now accounts for 95% of total broadband subscriptions in Zimbabwe, though efforts are ongoing to improve fixed broadband access and affordability through infrastructure sharing and expanding connectivity nationwide.

Africa represents major business opportunities due to its rapid economic growth and increasing number of internet and smartphone users. Specifically, the document outlines several opportunities for mobile applications in Africa, including: mobile money transfer services which are spearheading digital banking; increased use of e-government services via SMS; growth of broadband infrastructure enabling more internet access; use of mobile technology in agriculture, healthcare, and education; and the overall expansion of Africa's ICT sector. Mobile phones are transforming many industries in Africa as falling costs make ownership widespread and open up new ways of transferring money, accessing healthcare advice and education.
This document discusses the growing impact of mobile technologies on human development and democratic governance. It notes that over 5 billion mobile subscriptions globally provide more people with access to communication technologies than to other services. Mobile phones have seen especially rapid growth in developing countries, with 45% penetration in low-income countries and 76% in lower-middle income countries. The document outlines how mobile technologies can enhance inclusive participation and responsive institutions to support democratic governance, as well as help reduce poverty, prevent crises, and promote environmental sustainability. It also discusses challenges to maximizing mobile technologies' development impact and a framework for UNDP programming in different country contexts.
This document provides an overview of how mobile technologies can enhance human development through participation and innovation. It discusses current mobile subscription trends, noting that over 5 billion subscriptions globally demonstrates that ICT access targets may be achievable by 2015. It also outlines how mobile technologies are starting to impact areas like democratic governance, poverty reduction, and crisis response. The document aims to help UNDP staff understand how to leverage mobile technologies to strengthen development programming and outcomes.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024Vadym Kazulkin
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
