Community owned networks - connectivity solution for Africa
Cellular connectivity has provided impressive Internet growth in Africa over the past decade, but according to the ITU, in 2017, Africa only had 20% of the population using the Internet; a laggard compared to 40% in Asia & the Pacific and the 50% world average. We have connected the easy half of the population and connecting the next half of the world will require new innovative thinking.
This presentation looks at the current challenges to overcome and building blocks that can help community owned networks grow. It studies radio infrastructure, spectrum sharing and localized services all underpinned by the right regulation and skills.
Why the future of African journalism lies in mobile social networks
The document discusses the future of journalism in Africa and how it will likely lie in mobile social networks. It notes that while internet access in Africa is currently low and skewed towards wealthy urban elites, mobile phone use is growing rapidly. Mobile social networks and SMS can help foster more inclusive and representative conversations. Suella Hansen Pacific Wave Presentation ICT Connectivity in the Pacific
Dr. Suella Hansen presented at the Pacific Wave Conference on ICT connectivity in the Pacific region. She discussed how improving access to information and communication technologies (ICT) can drive economic growth and reduce poverty by enabling new applications for business, education, health, and personal use. However, the availability of robust and affordable broadband remains limited in many Pacific islands, particularly in rural areas, and there is a growing gap between bandwidth demand and supply. Further investment is still needed in infrastructure like submarine cables and mobile networks, market liberalization to reduce prices through competition, developing workforce skills, and collecting data on ICT access and usage to guide strategies and investments.

As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible.
