Individual Proposal
Project Concept – Recreational Area
For this construction project, we observed the surrounding of what
might be lacking in the area to fit the need of the residents. Based
on my observation, it is a family based residential area. Since the
piece of land is mostly surrounded by residential area, I have
decided to propose a recreational area because it would be
suitable and beneficial to the residents. Currently, there is no
recreational area such as playground nearby. There are courts for
sports and a golf club nearby but the sight of playground is not
seen. By proposing a recreational area and putting it to good use,
it would bring advantages to many people. These people include
all walks of life. Each facility in the recreational area
accommodates different age group of people. As a whole, it makes
the surrounding and livelier and friendlier place.
The recreational area would include the following:
i) Playground
ii) Roller Skating Area
iii) Outdoor Gym
iv) Food Stall
v) Open Area
vi) Benches/Picnic Area
vii) Garden
viii) Car Park

Accessibility
Proposed Site
This recreational area is easily accessed as it is near the main road.
The entrance of the recreational area would lead to the car park.

Playground
Play area for children to allow them to have fun. There isn’t any
playground nearby the proposed site so by having this facility, it
provides and safe and secured environment for the younger ones
to enjoy and be active. Basic playground equipment includes
swings, see-saws, slides, monkey bars and playhouses. There
would also be climbing equipment. The large playground serves
to accommodate the huge sum of children around. With proper
facility for children to play, parents would not have to worry so
much.
Outdoor Gym
6. ICI Final Project – Yeap Phay Shian
This is for teenagers and adults. The gym equipment is suitable
outdoors and able to withstand all kinds of weather. Alongside the
equipment is the description about the equipment, providing basic
guidelines on using the equipment. Residents do not have to sign
up for gym memberships and they are able to use this. Parents can
exercise while look after their children playing at the playground.
Making use of this outdoor gym would provide a variety of
exercise to the residents and would certainly improve their health.
Exercises combats health conditions, improves mood and boosts
energy.

Roller Skating Area
Mainly for teenagers who skateboard, roller skate or roller blade.
It is not very common to find a roller skating area. As such, it is
hard for them to look for a suitable roller skating area. Having this
facility will help ease their trouble and allow them to skate freely.
This activity would improve a teenager’s physical endurance and
allow them to be more active and sociable instead of getting glued
to technology. Skateboarding, roller skating and roller blading
helps in their overall fitness, flexibility, precision and pain
tolerance. It also helps acts as a stress reliever. It helps to take
one’s mind off things. Moreover, skating makes one more relaxed
in general. When one manages to conquer the hand rails or stair
sets, many problems encountered in life would feel as if it is
greatly lessen or disappeared. Furthermore, landing tricks brings
a sense of accomplishment and enhances one’s confidence. This
activity is indeed a beneficial thing for the mind, body and soul.

Food Stalls
There will be 2 food stalls in this recreational area. This would be
convenient for those who are feeling a little hungry and they can
have a quick bite so they would stay energized and hydrated.
These stalls would mainly sell snacks such as hotdogs, sandwiches,
water, juices and more.

Benches / Picnic Area
Benches and picnic areas are provided in the park. This space
allows people to relax, enjoy their food and chat with one another.
Families can have a picnic as a family activity. There is green area
as well to enhance the view of the surrounding. Recycling bins will
be provided to ensure the cleanliness of the park and to the act of
recycling will help to save the environment.

Garden
The garden includes softscape and hardscape such as plantings,
fountain and foot reflexology path.
The sight of water fountain beautifies the park while the soothing
sound of the water flowing will bring stress relief and relaxation to
the environment. Fountain is important because it provides a
tranquil ambiance and it gives a magical relaxing effect.
Plantings give a variety of natural colours and gives a more vibrant
look. Flowers are also linked to happiness.
As for foot reflexology path, it is a path designed to massage and
stimulate pressure points on the soles of the feet that corresponds

to all major body organs. There are a lot of pros that lie within the
foot reflexology path. It is very useful for adults and the elderly but
of course the younger ones can use it too. For example, it resulted
in a gradual reduction in blood pressure as well as an
improvement in balance and physical performance among adults
who are 60 years old and over. It is also effective for people who
are weak in health and for those you are recovering from an injury
or illness because it is a gentle yet deep working therapy.

Toilet
Toilet consisting of 1 male and 1 female cubical will be provided
for the convenience of people at the park. Besides, toilet is a basic
facility for a place.
Car Park
22 parking lots will be provided particularly for those who live a
little far away to ease their trouble. It would be much easier for
them to drive to the park instead of walk especially if they are
going to the park with their children or elderly.

The overall benefit of this proposed park:
1. Provide recreational area for the residents nearby since
there aren’t any recreational areas like playground for
children.
2. Suitable for all walks of life (Eg, playground for children,
rollerblading area for teenagers, garden and reflexology
path for adults and elderly to relax, food stalls, benches and
picnic area for families)
3. Allow residents to mix and bond with one another, thus
improving relationship within the community as well as
creating stable community.
4. Physical activities carried out there are able to improve
health and quality of life of residents.
5. Increase property value. (According to John L. Crompton, a
professor at Texas A&M University who has published
extensive research on parks and recreation, people are
willing to pay a larger amount of money for a property
located close to parks than a home that does not offer this
amenity.)
6. Makes the neighborhood a more livable place.
7. Create a safer neighborhood.
8. Parks and recreation services motivate business relocation
and expansion in the community.
9. More people would go to the nearby commercial area
especially cafes and restaurants, improve business.
Impacts:
1. Increased in traffic, therefore causing an increase in air and
sound pollution.
2. Noise created by children and teenagers might be irritating
to some nearby residents.
