1. Introduction to Project
We, a group of 4 which contains Yang Jing Loo, Lim Hong Wei,
Lee Lin Hui and me haveto find a specific empty land to initiate a
small construction project. The size of the land shall lay between
50m x 50m (2500 squaremetres) – 70m x 50m (3500 square
metres). And individually, we haveto propose one project that
serveson any one or combination of two of the following
purposes.
Our choices:-
- Recreation area
- Commercial area
- Industrialarea
- Agriculturalarea
- Tourism area
- Residential area
For my proposal, I’m proposing an edible garden that acts as an
agricultural area.
Key Plan
Bandar Sri Damansara
Location Plan
Jalan Saga recreational park.
Site Plan
1.1 Introduction to Site
We, as a team has chosen the site in Jalan Saga, Saga Park,
Bandar Sri Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia. This project is at rough
area of 55m x 60m. This site existed since the year of 1990’s.At that
time, there was nothing but just a piece of lush greenery land. And
now, there are a few softscape and hardscape elements existing.
Photos of the site:-
1.2 Site Analysis
The site has a large basketball court and an abandoned kick
volleyball court. But both the courts are not planned to be
demolished as the nearby residences havetheinitiative to play
during leisure time. The main reason of this construction plan is to
avoiding residences nearby can conservetime by not travelling to
far shops just to buy daily necessities. In the same time reduce the
percentageof air pollution. The site that is going to be developed
is a huge empty land.
Other than that:-
- Educational area nearby
- Religious area few steps away
- Many people occupy the basketball during the evening
- An edible garden beside the site
- Presence of petrol station
- Site consists of more softscape than hardscape
1.3 Site observation
From the site observation, thereare something that need to be
removed and restrained. All of the parts of site analysis has their
design issue in terms of these:
Existing Structures
We found that some of the existing structuresinside the site are no
interesting. For examples, inside the site, some of the swings and
benches havebeen destroyed and no maintenance was made.
Thus, it should be destruct as it can be an eye sore in the site.
Circulation
This site consists of many entranceto enter the site. Thus, it has a
great potential to make it easy to access to the site.
Vegetation
The site consists of many softscape which is good for the
environment. But some of the trees and shrubs should be maintain
or removeas it can attract unwanted insects or animals.
Conclusion
Overall, the site itself has a potential to build a gathering or
relaxation place for the residents nearby.Considerations will have
to be done depending on our individuals’ proposal.
Suggestion and Proposal
The aim of our site is to givethe residents a brand new facilities
that is eco-friendly and bringing people together. My proposal will
be an edible garden that acts as an agricultural area. The idea is
to expose the benefits of edible garden to the residents and to
lead them to a more healthy lifestyle.
The proposal is suitable to build at the centre of the residential
area. People can easily gain access to the edible garden.
What is an edible garden
An edible garden is a garden that contains flowers, herbs, seeds,
berries and plants that you can eat. It does not have to be large
in scale, a small scale will do. Your garden can start small with a
few pots and containers, or even just a window box with a few
herbs. You are free to plant anything you want in an edible
garden, research have shown that vegetation that comes from
an edible garden is usually fresh, organic and more healthy.
The benefits
- It’s convenient for the residents as it is located at the centre of
the residential area.
- People can come together and gather around and plant
vegetation together.
- The site will improvethe amount of green vegetation in this area
and also improve the quality of the air.
- This allows residents to escape from their stressful life and lead
them to a more healthy lifestyle
- This residents can enjoy a more healthy and organic vegetables
from the edible garden.
The impacts
- The normal routine for children will be affected as the
playground will be destroyed.
- Football activities will not be able to perform as usual.
- Residents’ plantation has risk of getting destroy or stolen by thief.
- It might cause air pollution and sound pollution to the residential
area during the demolishing phase.
Concept
The concept of this proposal is to actually providean eco friendly
place for all residents. Instead of having an old and not under
maintenance playground, replacing it with a better functions that
can conservethe environmentand quality of air. Edible garden
would be a good idea as the residential area do not havetheir
own personal edible garden due to limited amount of space.
The proposed edible garden would be great for producing quality
vegetablesand improve the quality of the air. Not only that,it is
convenientfor the residents that live in that area as the proposed
area is located at the centre of the residential area. The residents
can also takethis opportunity to escape from their stressful life and
pick up some knowledge in vegetations. Old folks usually spend
most of their time in edible garden as it interest them more.
The edible garden is suitable to anyoneas long one is willing to
learn new things and havecommitment to it. Planting a
vegetation consumes time, so one should be patient and willing to
sacrifice their time for this. Edible garden must be taken care on
regular basis, it must be watered and showered with sunlight. The
location itself is open and expose to sunlight.

Rationale
The reason why this site is chosen because the land is relatively
large and no maintenance were made on the existing structures.
Broken benches and broken swings were not repaired. Due to this
reason, the existing structuresshould be replaced with a more
functional area which could be an edible garden.
Not only that, the site is chosen because the residents had
suffered from dengue. This happened because of un-trimmed
grass and unclear water to attract mosquitoes to breed in the
area.
