Digital Native Fallacy
Do digital natives have digital skills for the workplace ?
Levels of Digital Proficiency
Advocacy
"There is a myth about the digital native and the Google generation kid who,
because they are young, are seen as being more computer literate than their
parents, but that is totally wrong.
Kids can be very fluid and fast with computers, but they are only fast when they
are doing something they have had a lot of practice in.”
Dr. Dan Russell, Google Research Scientist
“Young people’s engagements with digital technologies are varied and often
unspectacular”
Neil Selwyn, Academic, Monash University, Australia, Aslib.
Digital Native Fallacy
Skills for the Workplace
Information Worker Productivity Study
“Our survey shows that information workers in Western Europe waste a significant amount of time
each week dealing with a variety of challenges related to working with documents. This wasted time
costs the organization €14,492 per information worker per year and amounts to a loss of 19.5% in
the organization's total productivity.”
Cost of IT Ignorance in Singapore
 A total of 513 working professionals from across industries participated in
the survey
 Average time spent... dealing with (ICT) difficulties was found to be 151
minutes per week.
 This resulted in S$2,358 wasted for the employer per week

The Digital Skills Gap In The Workforce
Middle-skill jobs, those that require more than a
high school education but less than a bachelor’s
degree, comprise 39% of U.S. employment.
Two-thirds of Americans don’t have a college
degree, and these jobs represent important
career opportunities for them.
Nearly eight in 10 middle-skill jobs require
digital skills. Spreadsheet and word processing
proficiencies have become a baseline
requirement for (78%) of middle- skill jobs

Editor's Notes

  • #12 That’s why we talk about levels of digital proficiency – there is no one size fits all – and we realised with ECDL that we can’t continue with a one size fits all programme – people need to have the possibility to develop
  • #24 Ronald Bieber will present on this tomorrow
