• Since 1999 we have spoken to over 240,000 
children and young adults in schools, youth clubs 
and the community 
• Using dogs and the dog-themed activities we 
teach respect, responsibility, empathy and self 
respect, and generally re-engage young people 
with learning 
• Thanks to our furry friends we are able to reach 
the most hard-to-reach young people.

A dog-themed 
education programme 
for young offenders 
and youths at risk of 
offending.
WWhhoo iiss iitt ffoorr?? 
• Age range between 10 
and 25 years old 
• Young people in secure 
establishments 
• Young people on 
Community Orders 
• Social Services referrals.
WWhhyy YYoouunngg OOffffeennddeerrss?? 
• Whether as future dog owners or not, they live in 
or go back to communities where the issues of 
irresponsible dog ownership, 'status dogs', dog 
abandonment and antisocial behaviour with dogs 
are rife 
• At high risk of being engaged in offending 
conduct involving dogs.

• Influences young offenders’ attitude towards 
dogs in the future 
• Improve youths’ understanding of dog care and 
the responsibilities of dog ownership 
• Increases youths’ empathy and respect of all 
living beings - human and animal.

• Increases educational engagement and overall 
progress in literacy, numeracy, communication, 
group work etc.

• Flexible programmes of workshops or stand alone 
lessons in secure establishments 
• 1:1 sessions for young people on community 
orders 
• Small group workshops for offenders on orders 
and youths at risk of offending 
• Peer Mentoring scheme 
• Paid apprenticeships (dog related or community 
related) 
• All completely FREE to prisons and Councils.

• Dogs are used to work with the youths to offer a 
truly interactive, engaging learning experience 
• Responsible dog ownership messages are used 
to discuss: 
– personal responsibility and self-worth 
– consequences 
– commitment

– empathy and compassion 
– anger management.

• Fun, interactive sessions tailored to the needs and level 
of the young people 
• Short, practical activities:

• Young Offenders Institute, 15-18 yr olds, some of 
the most troubled and disengaged young people 
• This programme has evolved from a once-a-week 
session to a 3-day, 4 week course 
• Provide positive role models.

OOvveerr 1122 yyeeaarrss ooff tteeaacchhiinngg eexxppeerriieennccee…… • Since 1999 we have spoken to over 240,000 children and young adults in schools, youth clubs and the community • Using dogs and the dog-themed activities we teach respect, responsibility, empathy and self respect, and generally re-engage young people with learning • Thanks to our furry friends we are able to reach the most hard-to-reach young people.
  • 3. TTaakkiinngg TThhee LLeeaadd wwiitthh YYoouunngg OOffffeennddeerrss A dog-themed education programme for young offenders and youths at risk of offending.
  • 4. WWhhoo iiss iitt ffoorr?? • Age range between 10 and 25 years old • Young people in secure establishments • Young people on Community Orders • Social Services referrals.
  • 5. WWhhyy YYoouunngg OOffffeennddeerrss?? • Whether as future dog owners or not, they live in or go back to communities where the issues of irresponsible dog ownership, 'status dogs', dog abandonment and antisocial behaviour with dogs are rife • At high risk of being engaged in offending conduct involving dogs.
  • 6. WWhhaatt’’ss iinn iitt ffoorr DDooggss?? • Influences young offenders’ attitude towards dogs in the future • Improve youths’ understanding of dog care and the responsibilities of dog ownership • Increases youths’ empathy and respect of all living beings - human and animal.
  • 7. WWhhaatt’’ss iinn iitt ffoorr tthhee YYoouutthhss?? • Increases educational engagement and overall progress in literacy, numeracy, communication, group work etc. • Improves their behaviour and employability skills • Aids their personal development and self-esteem • Helps reduce reoffending.

WWhhaatt ddoo wwee ooffffeerr?? • Flexible programmes of workshops or stand alone lessons in secure establishments • 1:1 sessions for young people on community orders • Small group workshops for offenders on orders and youths at risk of offending • Peer Mentoring scheme • Paid apprenticeships (dog related or community related) • All completely FREE to prisons and Councils.

WWhhaatt’’ss iitt aallll aabboouutt?? • Dogs are used to work with the youths to offer a truly interactive, engaging learning experience • Responsible dog ownership messages are used to discuss: – personal responsibility and self-worth – consequences – commitment – respect – empathy and compassion – anger management.

HHooww iiss iitt ddeelliivveerreedd?? • Fun, interactive sessions tailored to the needs and level of the young people • Short, practical activities: – Sorting cards – Worksheets – Quizzes – Video clips – ‘Hands on’ tasks (e.g. making dog treats, art project) • All activities offer quick wins, providing a sense of achievement.

IIss iitt wwoorrkkiinngg?? • Informal tests, folders of work, feedback forms, focus groups • Feedback from institutions and case workers on behaviour changes and re-offending rates • Monitoring youths’ attendance, participation and general attitude during the sessions. I have never seen him so engaged!

IItt iiss wwoorrkkiinngg!! • Creates a better understanding of dogs’ needs • Helps to dispel myths about ‘status dogs’ • Helps to reduce re-offending • Re-engages youths in participation in education programmes within secure establishments • Improves compliance with court orders for those given community sentences.

CCaassee SSttuuddyy -- HHMMPP BBrriissttooll • Young Offender section of Adult Prison - for groups aged between 18-25yrs old • Initially stand alone, weekly Functional Skills literacy lessons • Very relevant as many of the young people had dogs before being in prison • Education department under-resourced.
  • 21. CCaassee SSttuuddyy -- DDaarrrreenn • Young person on Community Order for drugs and violent anti social behaviour • Increased self esteem and discipline • Improvement in communication skills • Completed the programme • Peer mentor • About to start apprenticeship.
  • 22. CCaassee SSttuuddyy -- CCooookkhhaamm WWoooodd • Young Offenders Institute, 15-18 yr olds, some of the most troubled and disengaged young people • This programme has evolved from a once-a-week session to a 3-day, 4 week course • Provide positive role models.
  • 23. What are young ppeeooppllee ssaayyiinngg aabboouutt iitt?? There’s been interesting and different things to do on the course. I wasn’t interested in dogs before but I’ve learnt a lot about dogs and dog culture. The staff were involved and it was a laugh.

Editor's Notes

  1. Today I am going to focus on Youth training as part of our community education programme, whether that is in the community or in secure establishments. What better way of teaching young people the fundamentals of empathy, respect and responsibility then through one of their all-time favourite topics: dogs? When it comes to teaching core skills and core values, dog-themed activities and lessons can capture a young person’s attention, imagination, mind and heart in ways that other subject matter may not. Dogs Trust are using dog-themed lessons to engage disengaged young people. The programme has been written and is called…..(next slide – hopefully seamlessly without me flicking through 10 slides at once)…..
  2. Taking the Lead is a natural extension of the work Dogs Trust already do in schools and youth groups but is aimed at Young Offenders or young people at risk of re-offending

  4. Activities and exercises cover subjects like:
  5. This a very successful activity where the young people can work as a group and match pictures, descriptions and name of the dog. They are then asked to write a Fact File on 4 dogs of their choice, writing in sentences
  6. This is an excellent way of embedding functional numeracy skills
  7. This can incorporate map work, discussions – ability to take the opposite view or opinion stressing how important it is to see another person’s point of view.
  8. Starting with stand alone lessons helps to get established and respected within the establishment and the young people see you around so you become a familiar face, they ask questions which is an opportunity to promote the programme. We actually had 3 young people sign up to a full time literacy course on the back of running a literacy lesson as they realised that it was an essential part of education. In order to run the programme the prison has to allocate a group based on age which is usually quite straight forward and welcomed by the prison as there is often little provision for young offenders in an adult establishment. The young person can draw on their experience as dog owners to explore their attitudes and treatment of dogs in terms of responsibility and needs of dogs. This can easily be related to themselves and responsibility towards others, their own general attitudes. Prisons often welcome outside agencies to enhance their education provision as their resources are often stretched and understaffed.
  9. The best way to evaluate is to get student feedback at the end of the programme. This can be made into a plenary activity where they have to remember all the things we covered.
  10. I would like to share a recent experience I had with a young person who was very disengaged at the beginning of the session, stated that he ‘didn’t like dogs’ but we persuaded him to stay and try. He was very insightful and stated……slide. Then I run off the stage and have a fag.
