YPR | Young People in Recovery
We envision a world where all young people in or
seeking recovery reach their maximum potential.
Our mission is to promote continuous abstinence and
improved quality of life for young people in, or seeking,
recovery. We share our lived experience to educate,
advocate and collaborate.
What is Recovery?
Endless
possibilities
Freedom
Better
Decisions
Choices
Renewed
relationships
Service
Getting
my life
back
Self-
awareness
Staying out
of trouble
History & Formation of YPR
• The Birth of YPR
– “Engage a broad cross-
section of young people
to further define the
essential elements of a
recovery oriented system
of care”
• Advocacy
– YPR officially began steering
its efforts towards advocacy in
November 2012.
– Engaging YPRs in becoming
active citizens is how we fulfill
our mission.
Overall Objectives
Grassroots
How We Do It
• Educate
-Resources, Lived Experience, Presentations
•Advocate
-Conduct Forums, Write letters and make noise!
•Collaborate
-Partnerships
YPR National Council
• Represent YPR within their state
• Mobilize the young recovery community
• Attend events and conferences
• Coordinate training for YPRs
• Lead the movement locally
• Represent the movement nationally
• 25 member council
YPR Chapters
• Our vehicle to ignite
change
• Organize our
community locally
• Mobilize our
community in
strategic action
• Indirectly provide
peer-to-peer support
YPR and Prevention
• Valuable lived experience
– Adds credibility
– Insider info
• Brainstorm together
– What would of helped you?
– What ended up working?
How to Support YPR
• Find and connect a local Young Person in
Recovery from your community who would like to
start a YPR chapter us!
• Organize the family and friends of YPRs to
support YPR and not infringe upon their creative
process.
• Bring YPR to the table as more than the “token”
youth.
• Request that Young People in Recovery in your
community speak about the solution rather than
glamorize our addiction
Building Recovery Community
• YPR believes there are essential components
needed to support us in our local communities.
– College Recovery Programs on every college
campus
– Recovery High Schools or High School Programs
– Recovery Community Centers
– Adequate Recovery Housing
– Billable peer-to-peer support services
How to Spread the Word
• Follow us on Social
Media

• Engage the YPRs in
your community
Contact YPR

Recovery Community Services
– These are places that provide:
• Social gatherings NOT 12 step meetings
• Life Skill training NOT 1-on-1 counseling
• Mentoring NOT sponorship
• A focus on recovery NOT on addiction
• Safe housing NOT structured sober housing
• Launching pad to teach active citizenship NOT having
people unaffected by the disease of addiction making
all of the decisions within NJ for us.
What we know
• We already know it costs $18,000 to effectively treat a
young person and $50,000 to house them in prison per
year
• Investing $200,000 for a thousand young people in
New Jersey so that they STAY in recovery instead of
falling back into the system saves money and saves
lives.
• This will never happen if someone doesn’t do it. We’re
here to tell you that it needs to happen for our
community.
What we need
• $50,000 to support YPR-NJ.
• $25,000 planning grant for recovery community
centers.
• $50,000 seed grant to build a free standing
recovery community center.
• $25,000 seed grant to start a state-wide job fair
for young people in recovery.
• $50,000 seed grant to build a freestanding
collegiate recovery community so students from
any educational institution may have adequate
and supportive housing.

Editor's Notes

  1. Our tag line has been “changing the game for young people in recovery”This is where you introduce yourself….”My name is ______ and I am a young person in long-term recovery which means I have not used drugs and alcohol since ______. Say whatever else you want to about yourself here, such as where you are going to school, how long you have been a part of YPR, etc.
  2. The first is our vision statement. (expect applause here!)The second is our mission.
  3. YPR sprung out of a suggestion made by SAMHSA to “Engage a broad cross-section of young people to further define the essential elements of a recovery oriented system of care”Read over our history on the website to help you with this slide*Mention how much fun we had at these meetings, the fellowship and camaraderie that we have amongst the group, how well we have all gotten to know each other. YPR has become a recovery support service in and of itself.
  4. Involve young people in recovery – bring them to the table, involve them in any programs, services or decisions that directly affect them, give them opportunities to lead and develop confidence, professional skills and grow as a personCreate more school-based recovery programs – more collegiate recovery communities and recovery high schools! (YPR won’t necessarily be the ones creating the programs, but we want to advocate for these programs so that other people will do the work to create them). Increase family engagement – (people love that we include the family here). We want to involve the family in the work that we do, we recognize how important family is for some people (note – not all people!) and we want to build opportunities to have the family be involved in the youth recovery movementChange public perception for possibilities for young people in recovery – people who get into recovery young have endless possibilities of what they can do with their life. Recovery does not equal a life of boredom! Your life is not over when you enter recovery and we want to change that perception. Develop youth-oriented recovery community centers – Recovery community centers need to have young people specific programming. (ideally, the YPR chapters would serve as this! Other community centers already in existence can amp up their youth programming and do the same thing). * check the website under resources to learn more about recovery community centers!Help build a community recovery model filling the gaps for young people in recovery – YPR members have identified the needs of young people. We want to help the local communitites to fill those gaps and be able to truly support their young people in recovery.
  5. Educate, Advocate and Collaborate come from our mission statement These are our three themes. Each of them has specific services/programs that we do to ensure that we are practicing what we preach! When people say “What do you do?” be able to say “We educate, advocate and collaborate. We provide resources, trainings and consulting services. We also influence policy as well as create partnerships and provide opportunities for yprs to be empowered.” That is the quick and dirty version of what we do! You will get asked that a lot!
  6. Each state will have a YPR national ambassador. They will have everything that they need to carry out YPR’s mission and vision within their state. This is how we will really engage the local community and reach pockets of the population that we wouldn’t be able to otherwise.
  7. This has yet to be fleshed out. I would keep this brief and say that we are developing curriculum to help National Ambassadors and other interested individuals create YPR chapters in their community. High schools and college campuses can have a YPR club if they want to get something started on campus. They will provide young people with a wide network of young people in recovery that they would not of met without a YPR chapter.
  8. Helps us spread the word about YPR! We need your support and your young people to change the game so that any young person can find and sustain recovery. Please connect with us via social media. Also, refer any young people that you know to us! We want to get them involved in YPR and support whatever efforts they are currently involved in. YPR’s amazing website is live and we would love for you to check it out! Also, please disseminate our resources to your community. We can provide you with YPR materials if you would like and can help you promote the youth recovery movement!
  9. Here is how you can get in touch with YPR. Thank you so much for coming. We hope that you are just as inspired and on fire for the youth recovery movement as we are! (include some additional summary points here – repeat the main things that you would like for them to take away. People only remember the first and last thing they hear!)
