This presentation provides a technical overview of IBM Optim and its benefits. Three areas of focus: Mitigate Risk: Much of the “data related” risk that an organization carries is related to keeping sensitive data private, preventing data breaches, and safely storing and retiring data that is no longer required on the online systems. Companies must comply to regulations and policies, and lack of proper data protection can lead to penalties, including damaging a company’s reputation. Deal with Data Growth: Another challenge is dealing with the explosive data growth for many applications. Without properly managing the data volume, companies will see the impact in the performance of their system over time. This is particularly a problem when service level agreements (SLA’s) are in place that mandate set response times. Control Costs: The costs of managing data spans across initial design of the data structure throughout all lifecycle phases - until ultimately retiring the data. IT staff is under constant pressure to deliver more for less. Some major costs for managing data include storage hardware costs, storage management costs (archiving, storing, retrieving, etc.), and costs of protecting the data per compliance regulations.

Making Data Timelier and More Reliable with Lakehouse Technology
Enterprise data architectures usually contain many systems—data lakes, message queues, and data warehouses—that data must pass through before it can be analyzed. Each transfer step between systems adds a delay and a potential source of errors. What if we could remove all these steps? In recent years, cloud storage and new open source systems have enabled a radically new architecture: the lakehouse, an ACID transactional layer over cloud storage that can provide streaming, management features, indexing, and high-performance access similar to a data warehouse. Thousands of organizations including the largest Internet companies are now using lakehouses to replace separate data lake, warehouse and streaming systems and deliver high-quality data faster internally. I’ll discuss the key trends and recent advances in this area based on Delta Lake, the most widely used open source lakehouse platform, which was developed at Databricks.

Engineering data quality
Garbage in, garbage out - we have all heard about the importance of data quality. Having high quality data is essential for all types of use cases, whether it is reporting, anomaly detection, or for avoiding bias in machine learning applications. But where does high quality data come from? How can one assess data quality, improve quality if necessary, and prevent bad quality from slipping in? Obtaining good data quality involves several engineering challenges. In this presentation, we will go through tools and strategies that help us measure, monitor, and improve data quality. We will enumerate factors that can cause data collection and data processing to cause data quality issues, and we will show how to use engineering to detect and mitigate data quality problems.

Today’s data-driven companies have a choice to make – where do we store our data? As the move to the cloud continues to be a driving factor, the choice becomes either the data warehouse (Snowflake et al) or the data lake (AWS S3 et al). There are pro’s and con’s for each approach. While the data warehouse will give you strong data management with analytics, they don’t do well with semi-structured and unstructured data with tightly coupled storage and compute, not to mention expensive vendor lock-in. On the other hand, data lakes allow you to store all kinds of data and are extremely affordable, but they’re only meant for storage and by themselves provide no direct value to an organization.

The Data Mesh architectural design was first proposed in 2019 by Zhamak Dehghani, principal technology consultant at Thoughtworks, a technology company that is closely associated with the development of distributed agile methodology. A data mesh is a distributed, de-centralized data infrastructure in which multiple autonomous domains manage and expose their own data, called “data products,” to the rest of the organization.
Organizations leverage data mesh architecture when they experience shortcomings in highly centralized architectures, such as the lack domain-specific expertise in data teams, the inflexibility of centralized data repositories in meeting the specific needs of different departments within large organizations, and the slow nature of centralized data infrastructures in provisioning data and responding to changes.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
