Designing Effective Storage Strategies to Meet Business NeedsEagle Technologies
In this presentation we present EAGLE's ideas on designing a modern tiered storage infrastructure. We will cover the basic strategies and requirements of tiers 1/2/3, object-based, cloud, and edge storage, along with the importance of categorizing data sets so that you can ultimately build a solid blueprint and business case. Other topics include transitioning to an effective tiered storage model, controlling storage growth, and emerging ideas and technologies for data storage.
Cloud computing environments offer benefits to business and IT departments that aren't easily gained through the use of traditional IT infrastructures. Here are five of the most common applications for cloud computing right now.
Giorgos Gerogiannis is Data Center & Cloud Solutions Manager at Uni Systems. He covered the topic of Business Continuity in the Cloud in the 1st Business Continuity Management Forum that took place in Athens, on February 18th, 2014
Data Protection Modernization - Restore, Reuse, ReinventPaula Koziol
We all have to backup data – but it’s often expensive and difficult, and the data we protect generally sits there doing absolutely nothing (unless you really need it). As IT environments change IBM believes that there needs to be a way to unlock value from your backup data. VM Admins, developers, application owners would love to be able to easily access their own backup data for a number of re-use purposes such as testing, development, reporting or analytics.
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus can simplify the backup process whilst making data readily available for the people who really need it - addressing traditional backup needs such as compliance alongside modern data re-use and self service capabilities.
The more you use your data, the more valuable it is.
Extensibility: The Key To Managing Your Entire Cloud PortfolioDell World
As cloud adoption increases, cloud management becomes more and more of a challenge. No longer can you look at managing your clouds with a one-off management strategy. In this session, you will learn how forward-thinking organizations around the world are bringing cloud into their IT operations and integrating it with their existing tools, systems, and processes to simplify management for administrators and streamline provisioning for developers. We will discuss governance tools, like security systems and chargeback models, as well as policy tools, monitoring solutions, ITSM systems and more. Discover how applying an extensible management approach across all of your clouds, including SaaS, PaaS and IaaS, can increase scale, availability and performance.
Cloud computing may be a confusing subject because of the number of different businesses offering what they call “cloud computing,” but it's not as complicated as it sounds. There are three types of cloud computing infrastructures, each with its own benefits.
Are you actively using or moving to Office 365, G-Suite, or other popular cloud applications? If so, how confident are you that you can keep all of that critical data protected? Attend this session to learn how Veritas can help protect data across all of your different cloud applications--using the same solution you use to protect your existing non-cloud applications. Don't miss this opportunity to explore the advantages of using one unified solution to protect all of your data--across all of your physical, virtual, and cloud environments.
Presentation explaining how all companies can benefit from moving their applications onto the Windows Azure platform. Freeing up their IT function to truly add value rather than merely keeping the lights on.

Replication to cloud virtual machines can be used to protect both cloud and on-premises production instances. In other words, replication is suitable for both cloud-VM-to-cloud-VM and on-premises-to-cloud-VM data protection. For applications that require aggressive RTO and recovery point objectives (RPOs), as well as application awareness, replication is the data movement option of choice.
Traditional disaster recovery solutions are expensive and inefficient. With the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry, you do not need to let a low budget get in the way of safeguarding and recovering your data. You do not have to be an enterprise-size business to receive the cloud’s protection effectively.
RapidScale helps to eliminate upfront costs while saving money on pricey equipment and maintenance with CloudRecovery. With our pay-as-you-go plan, pay for what you use and experience a service that is scalable according to your needs.
RapidScale's CloudIntelligence team will listen to your business needs and design the right Disaster Recovery as a Service plan for your business. RapidScale offers a 100% uptime guarantee.
Our Cloud Recovery product set is backed by one of the most advanced Storage Area Network systems in the industry, NetApp. With its own proprietary file system and fiber channel network, our SAN’s offer some of the best performance and redundancy available. Most likely, your organization is not in the business of running data centers, yet a significant amount of time and money is spent doing just that. Amazon Web Services provides a way to acquire and use infrastructure on-demand, so that you pay only for what you consume. This puts more money back into the business, so that you can innovate more, expand faster, and be better positioned to take advantage of new opportunities.
In January of this year, Kyligence announced the immediate availability of Kyligence Cloud 4, the first fully cloud-native, distributed OLAP platform. During our announcement, EMA analyst John Santaferraro said:

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Editor's Notes
But why the shift, and why is it happening in the first place?
One of the key tenants that we have seen at IBM Storage are major shifts and disruptions in the overall market.
Some of these shifts are technology such as cloud and flash, others are market forces such as industry and business or end user consolidation. And when I refer to industry consolidation I don’t just mean disruptions of storage players such as the Dell/EMC merger which has been a huge disruptive force in the market but also at your level…the Enterprise business. You are seeing acquisitions everywhere you turn in almost every market segment. And this translates into new business challenges which can affect budgets…some for the good, and some for the bad. IBM’s Storage Utility Offering is one that helps out in the good!
IT typically spends around 73% of their budget on business as usual - just to keep the lights on.
This only allows for 27% of the budget for expenditures on innovation, which in todays environment is a recipe for failure.
This skewed allocation of IT budget can be traced to the high cost of IT complexity, inefficient consumption of resources and restrictive environments. Add in low server and storage utilization rates and you can see how IT is faced with serious challenges.
Shifting large up front costs to a more manageable and predictable monthly cost can be the difference between success and failure. Moving to a predictable monthly charge for data consumption could also save you millions over the life of your storage.
Paying only for what you use, but having the ability to scale up or down as business use dictates could be the step you need to take to unleash your companies full potential.

The IBM Storage Utility Offering provides your business the ability to pay for storage capacity based on your actual monthly usage, which may increase or decrease monthly based on business requirements.
Designed to meet high or unpredictable rate of data growth with instant access to new capacity. Ideal for any business who can’t afford the time required to go through the procurement process each time they need to increase capacity. It is also ideal for businesses who don’t want to overbuy capacity for peak capacity seasonality.
The solution consists of 2 parts
Base Subscription: The customer commits to monthly $/TB/Month base subscription, typically 30-40% base commitment. Handled via a 36 month lease with IGF, or can be purchased up front.
Variable Utilized Capacity: The balance of capacity is averaged out over a month and then billed quarterly upon usage at a $/TB/month rate.
Solution: The fully loaded system (3 years of expected capacity) is delivered to the customer on day 1.
Customer provisions what they need when they need and consumes up and down. Array and solution comes complete with array controller software, drives, shelves, power and infrastructure if needed. Numerous configs including IBM ESS, A9000, A9000R, Storwize V7/V5K, FS900, Cloud Object Storage (on premises only) and DS8K.
For many of these solutions you gain extra availability in that the entire 3 years or contracted capacity is delivered on day 1, thus no disruption as added capacity is needed and you will also see a lower initial costs as larger drives may be used because we are delivering all of the capacity up front. So entry level price point to start is typically much lower than your standard 1 or 2 year purchase.
Solution Monitoring: IBM Spectrum Storage Insight is used to monitor capacity and report back consumption. Monthly average is then billed back quarterly. *Analytics for capacity planning included in upgraded IBM Spectrum Storage Insights PRO
What we would like to talk to you about today is IBM Storage Insights.
IBM Storage Insights, our Enterprise-proven, cognitive, cloud-based, systems insight platform.
We built this solution with the customer in mind. We built it hoping to help build a relationship that extended past our “storage” products, through our sales and technical sales iniatitives all the way to support.
We did this by building into the system:
Holistic system monitoring to always know what is going on with your storage
Cognitive system analytics – this is the ability to proactively tell you if your setup is meeting design best practices for the applications you have
Planning tools to help optimize your storage infrastructure
And proactive storage diagnostics that is focused on helping you reduce downtime and get your systems up and running quickly in the event of a failure

HPE Flexible Capacity
Customers commit to a minimum of resource consumption (typically 80% of requested capacity) based on expected near-term demand, and HPE installs equipment, incorporating a buffer of 10-40% beyond that request. Quarterly checkpoint with customer to determine additional needs
Additional capacity added as needed – (this is usually where disruption can happen)
Billed as a service from HPE Services
Dell EMC Flex on Demand, Flex Capacity
Leverage EMC Global Financial Services
“Hybrid financing/inventory procurement partnership”
Provides base capacity (via lease / purchase) and an additional “buffer” capacity to use when needed; buffer is only charged for upon use
Additional capacity added as needed – (this is usually where disruption can happen)
NetApp On Demand Advantage
Base capacity + additional pre-installed storage
Base Payments increase if increased use levels stabilize; buffer capacity is provided at no add’l cost to stay ahead of need and is then billed for based on usage.
Additional capacity added as needed – (this is usually where disruption can happen)
Hitachi Vantara Cloud-Storage/ on Demand
Initial baseline storage system that equates to monthly subscription payments
+ an “expansion reserve” is available to use if capacity increases, which gets billed monthly/quarterly based on a per GB per month fixed overage price.
If you need to increase base, your fixed monthly charge can increase to reflect new base subscription.
An exciting new IBM Storage offering for customers who require highly flexible storage and are also looking to dramatically reduce capital expenditures.
