Application Darwinism: Why Most Enterprise Apps Will Move to the Cloud (SVC20...Amazon Web Services
(Presented by Skytap) Complex multi-tier enterprise applications that have been under development for decades assume reliable hardware and typically have dependencies on underlying operating systems, hardware configurations, and network topologies. The boundary between one application or service and another is often fuzzy, with many interdependencies. These traits make some enterprise applications difficult to refactor and move to a public cloud. Even the teams that manage these applications can be unfamiliar with cloud terminology and concepts. In this session for enterprise IT architects and developers, Brad Schick, CTO of Skytap and Skytap customers Fulcrum, DataXu and F5 will share their insights into why the evolution of enterprise applications will lead to hybrid applications that opportunistically take advantage of cloud-based services. Brad will then demonstrate Skytap Cloud with Amazon Web Services and discuss how enterprises can easily achieve this integration today for application development and testing.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

Cloud computing environments offer benefits to business and IT departments that aren't easily
gained through the use of traditional IT infrastructures. Here are five of the most common
applications for cloud computing right now.
5 Key Applications of Cloud Computing
1. QA/Testing: Eliminate the guesswork
A cloud environment provides on-demand virtual
servers that are highly scalable, elastic, flexible and
configurable, so the agility required in software QA
and testing makes cloud computing an ideal
solution.
• Has scalability and flexibility to replicate
even very complex production
environments.
• Test applications on all hardware and
operating system configurations and
permutations in a virtual environment.
• Simulate hundreds of thousands of users
and their usage habits to predict how your
systems will fare against traffic spikes
• Pay only for the capacity you use without
incurring large capex costs.
2. Training, Education and E-Learning:
Simulate real-world IT environments
When training staff on new software or educating
the next generation of IT professionals, cloud
computing provides massive scalability on demand.
• Create instances for everyone attending
virtual seminars and pay only for the time
you need.
• Scales up and down to mirror
classroom/curriculum demand.
• Usage-based billing keeps costs down
while keeping availability high.
• Simulate a multi-server environment for
students in a classroom setting.
• Students can do hands-on labs and exams
in a real-world environment.
3. Application Development / R&D:
Replicated environments hold costs down
Provide multiple development team members with
their own discrete environments on which to do
development and testing as they work on their
parts of the project.
• Create testing instances for each coder
while keeping costs down.
• Simulate a production environment to
easily test code on all platforms and
configurations.
• Take the unpredictability out of testing.
4. Business Continuity / Disaster
Recovery: Drop costs of mirrored servers
When a disaster occurs, the failover environment
needs to be able to immediately take the necessary
workload to keep the business running.
• Automatically spin up virtual failover
servers only when they're needed.
• Have the latest patches and software
versions without the high costs of
maintaining a mirrored physical server.
• Do replication geographically.
• Dynamically shift data and applications
around quickly and easily.
• Fewer servers are needed, so costs stay
low.
• Test disaster recovery plans more
frequently without high turn-up costs
5. Production Systems:
Capacity on demand
A production systems
environment that needs high
levels of elasticity and flexibility
can benefit from the cloud
because of the ability to quickly
scale capacity up and down
based on immediate needs.
• Cloud computing
capacity can be turned
on as needed in an
automated fashion.
• SaaS businesses can
start small and increase
capacity as their needs
grow.
• Maintain compliance
conformity by choosing
in which region your
data is stored.
In the cloud, computing power is more easily scaled up and down,
enabling businesses to ramp up their compute and server needs on an
as-needed basis without generating high additional costs.
