Technology and Me A personal timeline of educational technology
Overview My name is Stephanie Ibbs I started school in the late 1970’s in Orange county, California I graduated from Rosary High School in 1990 in Orange county, California I graduated from college at Humboldt State University in Humboldt county, California in 1995 I am currently working toward a degree in library science from the University of Hawaii When I finish my degree, I hope to become a school library media specialist
My definition of educational technology Educational technology is… the use of tools to create a global learning community that promotes student achievement; authentic learning experiences allow teachers and students to meet 21 st century standards.
Web sites on ed tech history History, The History of Computers, and the History of Computers in Education timeline History of Educational Technology PowerPoint presentation Computers in Education: A Brief History article
Kindergarten technology We had no TV’s in the classroom, but did watch some movies on a reel to reel movie projector Handouts were called “dittos” and they were created on a “ditto machine.” The ink was a purplish color and had a distinctive smell
High school technology Typing classes were taught on typewriters instead of stand alone word processors or computers At home I used a stand alone word processor instead of a computer to type my papers A computer lab was used to teach computer programming (example assignment: students would input a code to create a fireworks display)
College technology During my undergraduate years… Few people had cell phones; they were considered extravagant, big and bulky I still used a stand-alone word processor at home On campus, computer labs provided some students with their only computer access The internet was just getting started and I got my first email account (1995)
A vivid technology learning experience On January 28 th , 1986, my class and I were excited about the opportunity to watch the Space Shuttle Challenger lift off (we had a TV in our classroom!) Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher to attempt a trip to space, was on board Together as a class, we witnessed this unforgettable, tragic event Click to view the disaster - YouTube - Challenger Disaster Live on CNN
A technology I would like to use in my classroom I would like my students to have access to a Flip video camera and movie making software They could create and share videos as part of a project-based learning environment Example: A documentary entitled Save our Reefs: The State of Coral Reefs in Hawaii.
My vision of the classroom of the future I would like to see a classroom where each student has access to a laptop Web 2.0 tools (Websites, blogs, wikis, podcasts, and videos) could be used to create a global learning community, and in doing so, enhance student learning
A challenge for teaching Many teachers are most comfortable teaching the way they were taught Busy teachers have difficulty keeping up with the latest technologies Schools do not have proper funding to provide and maintain technology-related tools
Words of wisdom Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. ~ William Butler Yeats
