Experimental Research on Power Quality Improvement using Capacitor Bank for 5...ijtsrd
This research is to improve the power quality for 500kVA three phase transformer using capacitor bank at Technological University Mandalay . The main purpose of installing a capacitor bank is to compensate the reactive power consumption and reduce the line losses for power quality improvement. The required value of capacitor bank rating for transformer is calculated in this paper. And then the results for loss reduction and reactive power compensation are also compared without and with capacitor bank. In this research, 150 kVAR of capacitor bank is installed to improve the power factor up to 0.99, to decrease reactive power from 138.47 to 0.75kVAR, apparent power from 169.47kVA to 101.93kVA, and percent loss reduction up to 69.14. So, the simple model of reactive power compensation with 150kVAR capacitor bank is helpful for 500 kVA transformer at Technological University Mandalay to reduce reactive power consumption. Performance investigation of stand-alone induction generator based on STATCOM...IJECEIAES
Self-Excited induction generators (SEIG) display a low voltage and frequency regulation due to variable applied load and input rotation speed. Current work presents a simulation and performance analysis of a three-phase wind-driven, SEIG connect to a three-phase load. In addition, an investigation of the dynamic operation of the induction generator from starting steady state until no-load operation. It is assumed that the input mechanical power is constant where the rotor of the SEIG rotates at a constant speed. The value of the excitation capacitance which is necessary to the operation of the induction generator also computed to ensure a smooth and self-excitation starting. The output voltage of the generator is adjusted by varying the reactive power injected by STATCOM. A 3-phase IGBT voltage source inverter with a fuel cell input supply is connected as STATCOM which is used to compensate for the reduction in the supply voltage and its frequency due to variation occurred in the applied loads. This work includes introducing a neuro-fuzzyy logic controller to enhance the performance of the SEIG by regulation the generated voltage and frequency. The dynamic model of SEIG with STATCOM and loads are implemented using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
Supercapacitors are electrical energy storage devices with a high specific power density, a long cycle life and a good efficiency, which make them attractive alternative storage devices for various applications. However, supercapacitors are subject to a progressive degradation of their perfor-mance because of aging phenomenon. Therefore, it is very important to be able to estimate their State-of-Health during operation. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a very recog-nized technique to determine supercapacitors’ state-of-health. However, it requires the interrup-tion of system operation and thus cannot be performed in real time (online). In this paper, a new online identification method is proposed based on extended Kalman observer combined with a complementary PID corrector. The proposed method allows to accurately estimating supercapacitor resistance and capacitance, which are the main indicators of supercapacitor state-of-health. The new online identification method was applied for two voltage/current profiles using two different supercapacitors. The resistance/capacitance estimated by the new method and the conventional EKF were compared with those obtained by an experimental offline method. In comparison with conventional EKF, the capacitance obtained by the new method is significantly more accurate.
Improvement of Power Quality using Fuzzy Logic Controller in Grid Connected P...IAES-IJPEDS
In this paper, the design of combined operation of UPQC and PV-ARRAY is designed. The proposed system is composed of series and shunt inverters connected back to back by a dc-link to which pv-array is connected. This system is able to compensate voltage and current related problems both in inter-connected mode and islanding mode by injecting active power to grid. The fundamental aspect is that the power electronic devices (PE) and sensitive equipments (SE) are normally designed to work in non-polluted power system, so they would suffer from malfunctions when supply voltage is not pure sinusoidal. Thus this proposed operating strategy with flexible operation mode improves the power quality of the grid system combining photovoltaic array with a control of unified power quality conditioner. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is used in both three phase four leg inverters. A Proportional Integral (PI) and Fuzzy Logic Controllers are used for power quality improvement by reducing the distortions in the output power. The simulated results were compared among the two controller’s strategies With pi controller and fuzzy logic controller
IMPEDANCE SOURCE INVERTER TOPOLOGIES FOR PHOTOVOLTAIC APPLICATIONS – A REVIEWIAEME Publication
The impedance source inverters can step up the voltage and hence, they are greatly preferred for photovoltaic applications. There are many impedance and quasi impedance network topologies available. The key factor in selection of topology is the amount of voltage gain obtained along with the reduced number components. This paper compares some of the impedance and quasi - impedance source inverter (qZSI) topologies for photovoltaic applications namely, switched coupled inductor qZSI, switched ZSI, enhanced-boost quasi ZSI with continuous and discontinuous source current topologies, enhanced -boost active qZSI, switched-boost ZSI and high gain switched boost inverter. The parameters taken for comparison are voltage gain, boost factor, voltage, and current stresses on the components etc. Based on the comparison, the high gain switched boost ZSI is found to have high voltage gain along with reduced voltage and current stress. The review will be useful for researchers working in impedance source inverter network.
The voltage source inverters (VSI) are ever required section in the AC motor drive and power system interface. The electrical drive segment, the VSI based drives are unavoidable and they are closely operated with induction motor, permanent magnate synchronous motor and BLDC motor. These drives are normally needed high torque-power characters. Hence, the input DC-link side voltage is increased with help of increasing input AC in the rectifier input. However, this causes the power quality disturbance in the AC main and DC-link. In order to go for a increasing the AC voltage, the rectifier out is connected with DC to DC boost converter and they are increasing the DC voltage to meet out the drive DC-link voltage demand. With this aim, the paper proposes the idea to connect high step non-isolated high gain coupled DC to DC converter with three phase VSI for drives applications. The proposed converter has an ability to increase the voltage five times and the counter winding arrangement ratio of the converter is help for the further increase of gain. Inn this interface the front end DC to DC converters inductors are charged by making the short circuit with inverter switching. The converter voltage gain is controlled by shoot through of the VSI switch (converter gain directly proportional to inverter shoot through). The proposed converter has a higher degree of freedom in their values of winding and output voltage. Hence, the DC-link voltage of the inverter can be extended in any level. The operation principle and modes of the proposed DC to DC Source tied VSI is analyzed and simulated using MATLAB-Simulink software simulation. The laboratory based small scale power circuit is developed with help of control algorithm. The entire implementation is done through PIC microcontroller platform. Open-Delta VSC Based Voltage Controller in Isolated Power SystemsIJPEDS-IAES
This paper proposes a reduced switch voltage source converter (VSC)
topology implemented as a voltage controller in isolated power systems. In
isolated power systems generally self-excited induction generators (SEIG)
are used mainly for their ruggedness and economic reasons. Mostly for
constant power applications such as pico hydro uncontrolled turbine driven
self excited induction generators feeding three-phase loads are employed.
The proposed reduced switch voltage controller is used to regulate and
control the voltage at the generator terminals as it is subjected to voltage
drops, dips or flickers when the isolated power system is subjected to various
critical loads. In this paper the controller is realized using a three-leg fourswitch
insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based current controlled
voltage-source converter (CC-VSC) and a self-supporting dc bus containing
two split capacitors, thus reducing the IGBT count and hence cost. This
reduced switch topology forms an Open-Delta type converter. The proposed
generating system along with the controller is modeled and simulated in
MATLAB along with Simulink and power system blockset (PSB) toolboxes.
The system is simulated and the capability of the isolated generating system
along with the reduced switch based voltage controller is presented here
where the generator feeds linear and non-linear loads are investigated.

economic constraints is a challenge .This draws attention towards the localization of the reactive
components that can improve the overall voltage profile in the system. This paper discusses a
methodology for suitable selection of position (bus) for the placement of capacitor bank wherein the
injection of fixed amount of reactive power is made to depict a picture of the overall improved
voltage in the system considering the stability aspect for respective injection at that bus. The reduced
jacobian is used to determine the impact of reactive power injection in the form of system voltage
improvement.

Influence of Static VAR Compensator for Undervoltage Load Shedding to Avoid V...IJAPEJOURNAL
In the recent years, operation of power systems at lower stability margins has increased the importance of system protection methods that protect the system stability against various disturbances. Among these methods, the load shedding serves as an effective and last-resort tool to prevent system frequency/voltage instability. The analysis of recent blackouts suggests that voltage collapse and voltage-related problems are also important concerns in maintaining system stability. For this reason, voltage also needs to be taken into account in load shedding schemes. This paper considers both parameters in designing a load shedding scheme to determine the amount of load to be shed and its appropriate location .The amount of load to be shed from each bus is decided using the fixed step size method and it’s location has been identified by using voltage collapse proximity index method. SVC is shunt connected FACTS device used to improve the voltage profile of the system. In this paper impact of SVC on load shedding for IEEE 14 bus system has been presented and analyzed.
Machine learning for prediction models to mitigate the voltage deviation in ...IJECEIAES
The voltage deviation is one of the most crucial power quality issues that occur in electrical power systems. Renewable energy plays a vital role in electrical distribution networks due to the high economic returns. However, the presence of photovoltaic systems changes the nature of the energy flow in the grid and causes many problems such as voltage deviation. In this work, several predictive models are examined for voltage regulation in the Jordanian Sabha distribution network equipped with photovoltaic farms. The augmented grey wolf optimizer is used to train the different predictive models. To evaluate the performance of models, a value of one for regression factor and a low value for root mean square error, mean square error, and mean absolute error are used as standards. In addition, a comparison between nineteen predictive models has been made. The results have proved the capability of linear regression and the gaussian process to restore the bus voltages in the distribution network accurately and quickly and to solve the shortening in the voltage dynamic response caused by the iterative nature of the heuristic algorithm.
Power Quality Improvement in Power System using UPFCijtsrd
Occurrence of a fault in a power system causes transients. To stabilize the system, Power System Stabilizer (PSS) and Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) are used. Load flow analysis is done to analyze the transients introduced in the system due to the occurrence of faults. The Flexible Alternating Current Transmission (FACTS) devices such as UPFC are becoming important in suppressing power system oscillations and improving system damping. The UPFC is a solid-state device, which can be used to control the active and reactive power. This paper considers a power system as a case study for investigating the performance of UPFC is achieving stability. By using a UPFC the oscillation introduced by the faults, the voltage deviations and speed deviations can be damped out quickly than a system without a UPFC. The effectiveness of UPFC in suppressing power system oscillation is investigated by analyzing their voltage deviations and reactive power support in this paper. A proportional integral (PI) controller has been employed for the UPFC. It is also shown that a UPFC can control independently the real and reactive power flow in a transmission line. Optimal siting and sizing of unified power flow controller using sensitivity...IJECEIAES
This paper presents Sensitivity constrained placement of unified power flow controller (UPFC) considering active-power flow sensitive index (APFSI) and static voltage stability index (STATIC-VSI) to minimize active-power losses and to improve power transmission capacity. The sensitive factors are derived with respect to voltage, phase angle and current to formulate APFSI. Transmission line impedance parameters along with active and reactivepower flow measurements are considered to formulate static-VSI. Sensitivity constrained differential evolutionary (SCDE) algorithm is proposed for parameter setting through which power control and minimization of losses in system can be achieved. Testing is performed on IEEE-5, 14 and 30-bus networks in MATLAB and results indicate that SCDE is robust optimization technique compared to conventional method and genetic algorithm (GA).

With the increased rate of urbanization and industrialization, the Nigerian electric power system is being put under pressure, high power losses which has led to fluctuation in voltage level. In this work the Nigeria 330Kv network of 42 bus system was considered. Data for the analysis were obtained from Transmission Company of Nigeria National Control Centre, Osogbo TCN and MATLAB PSAT software with newton Raphson's solution method embedded in it was used to carry out the analysis. The results of the analysis showed that many of the bus voltages were outside the voltage limits of ±5 i.e 0.95pu 1.05pu . After compensation with Flexible AC Transmission System devices FACTs namely Unified Power Flow Controller UPFC which can be used to control power flow on a transmission line, the voltage profile almost flat with bus voltages within acceptable voltage limits. Location of Shunt FACTS Devices for First-Swing Stability Enhancement in Inte...Editor IJMTER
This paper deals with the location of shunt FACTS devices to improve transient stability
in a long transmission line with predefined direction of real power flow. Shunt Flexible AC
Transmission System (FACTS) devices, when placed at the mid-point of a long transmission line,
play an important role in controlling the reactive power flow to the power network and hence both
the system voltage fluctuations and transient stability. The validity of the mid-point location of shunt
FACTS devices was verified using Simulink, with different shunt FACTS devices, namely static var
compensator (SVC) and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) in a long transmission line
using the actual line model. It has been observed that the FACTS devices, when placed slightly offcentre towards sending-end, give better performance in improving transient stability and the location
depends on the amount of local/through load. The results are experimented and simulated on
MATLAB/Simulink environment.
The power quality issue will take new dimension due to power system restructuring and shifting trend towards
distributed generation. Huge loss in terms of time and money has made power quality problems a major anxiety for modern
industries with non-linear loads in electrical power system. Power quality consists of a large number of disturbances such
as voltage sags, swells, harmonics, notch, flicker, etc. Power quality problems can be mitigated by many methods but most
appropriate solution to mitigate these problems is FACTS devices. In this paper a brief survey of FACTS devices are
presented which are used to mitigate power quality problems.

Power Upgrading of Transmission Line by Combining AC DC Transmission and Anal...ijtsrd
The basic concept in designing of any power lines in transmission of ac dc power with power upgrading using UPFC is proposed through a single circuit ac transmission line. In this proposal certain limitation are their due to the use of ground as return path. More ever the instantaneous value of each conductor voltage with respect to ground becomes higher than the Line Line voltage. By using UPFC that is unified power flow controller we can make it possible to handle practically all power flow control and transmission line compensation problem which provide functional flexibility in power which is not possible by the use of conventional thyristor control system. In this paper we have design UPFC to improve stability of power oscillation that are caused due to non linearity of the load. MATLAB Simulink model has been develop for this concept. Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Abstract: The proposed method is used to place SVCs & IPFCs optimally in an electrical power system to
reduce active power losses and as well as to improve voltage profile in different load and contingency
conditions using Differential Evaluation (DE) Technique. The simulations are performed on an IEEE 14-bus
system and results are presented.

I. Introduction:
The main objective of an electrical engineer is to generate, transmit, and distribute power at rated
voltage and rated frequency. In generally, the load is uncertain. Hence, voltage and power are violating the
limits. This can be overcome by using different type of techniques such as generator voltages, transformer taps,
fixed capacitor and reactive power distribution. In this paper, reactive power distribution is provided using
different types of power electronic based FACTS devices.
In previews, the research engineers are found an optimal location of FACTS devices like SVC, TCSC,
and UPFC at different load conditions [1,3, 4].
In this paper, a new research method is implemented on an optimal location of SVC and IPFC in
normal and as well as contingency conditions.
In normal operating conditions, the power system losses are the minimum and voltages are prescribed
limits. The power system may be collapse due to the following reasons such as outage of a generating unit or of
a line, sudden increasing or decreasing of the power demand. Most of the times, the system may remains as it
original state i.e. within the limitations of voltage & power. But sometimes, it does not become to its original
state i.e. its limits are violating. This phenomenon is called contingency.
In recent decades, different types of biological optimization techniques like GA, PSO, AC, EP etc are
implemented. In this research, PSO technique is used to optimal location of devices. The simulations are
performed on a modified IEEE 14 bus system and results are presented at different contingency conditions.
Problem Formulation: The power flow through any transmission line can be obtained by using the equation

Where
Pij is the active power flow through the transmission line from i to j
Qij is the reactive power flow through the transmission line from i to j
Vi & Vj are the bus voltage magnitudes
Xij is the reactance of the transmission line
Өij is the phase angle between i and j buses.
The power flow through the transmission line can be controlled by changing any one of the above mentioned
parameters using different types of FACTS devices. In this paper two types of FACTS devices are used one is
SVC, and other is IPFC.
Mathematical models of FACTS devices: The main aim of this objective is to perform a best utilization of the
existing transmission lines in normal and contingency conditions by an optimal location of FACTS devices in a
network.
Static VAR Compensator: The Static VAR compensator is a shunt type of FACTS devices, which absorbs or
injects reactive power at which it is connected. The size of the SVC is depends on the rating of current and
reactive power injected into the bus.

Algorithm: The step by step procedure for the proposed optimal placement of SVC and IPFC devices using
differential evaluation optimization is given below:
Step 1: The number of devices to be placed is declared. The load flow is performed.
Step 2: A set of populations are initialize randomly which satisfies the constraints of SVC & IPFC.
Step 3: Evaluate the fitness for each population and recorded member.
Step 4: Mutation the population.
Step 5: Crossover between initial & mutation population.
Step 6: Evaluate fitness of mutant vectors and compare it to initial population and record the best member.
Step 7: repeat step 2 to 5 until stopping criterion is met.
Step 8: Stop and print the results.
A CASE STUDY:
The PSO based optimal location of SVC & IPFC devices was implemented at contingency conditions using
MATLAB 7.5. Here the modified IEEE 14-bus system was tested.
