Napoleon Bonaparte As A French Revolution
Started from a mere soldier, Napoleon Bonaparte was able to ascend the throne of an Emperor.
Frequently at war, he schemed and maneuvered his way through politics to be at the top of France.
This brings up the question of what made him want to be the Emperor of France. Napoleon Bonaparte
was a man that genuinely understood his own motives and ambitions. He was able to foster the motive
of saving France from the bloody French Revolution and ambition of gaining power by utilizing
revolutionary ideas combined with his own to accumulate power and stability of imperial rule. This
occurred due to being a product of the enlightenment, power hungry personality, ego, and use of
manipulation. Firstly, Napoleon was a product of the enlightenment era. He combined French
Revolutionary ideals with his own to further his objective in order to stabilize his rule and gain the
favour of the French population. According to Patterns of World History , life, liberty, equality, social
contract, property, representation, nation, popular sovereignty, and constitution are the product of
French ideals.[1] Napoleon only used liberty and equality which were the most popular with the
citizens.[2] He described that once Italy had tasted the benefits of a wise and liberal administration, it
would be simply impossible for them to return back to their old way of life.[3] With the concept of
liberty and equality incorporated into the constitution, it was possible that Napoleon wanted the

The Yellow Stone Steamboat
In the summer of 1830, Kenneth McKenzie ( King of Missouri ) suggested to Pierre Chouteau (Jr.,
Western agent for John Jacob Astor s American Fur Company) that a steamboat could transport trade
goods and supplies up the Missouri River and carry furs and skins on the return trip. In November of
1830 Chouteau placed an order with two firms in Louisville for the Yellow Stone (Yellow Stone is a
side wheeler steamboat was the first steam powered boat to reach above Council Bluffs, Iowa, on the
Missouri River). During April of 1831 the steamboat know as Yellow Stone left St.louis for her first

means running in low water. The captain of the Yellow

begin the most crucial part of his career as a public servant. In Texas he soon became involve in the
Texans politics of rebellion, he was a delegate from Nacogdoches at the Convention of 1833 in San

Cannibal Tours
In Cannibalizing, Commodifying , or Creating Culture? Power and Art in Sepik River Tourism,
Silverman makes several critiques of O Rourke s Cannibal Tours. Silverman argues that O Rourke
constructed a limited view of the New Guinea tribes. Silverman attributes the eroding authenticity to
the tourists pursuit for entertainment in exchange for money. For instance, O Rourke s interviews
mostly covered reactions from tourists and how they gawked over the natives, arrogantly depicting
their primitive lives. Silverman argues that the film portrays tourism as a process that only
disempowers local people and erodes from their lives all genuine, meaningful dimensions of their
culture (Silverman 1996). Tourism is much more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anthropologists and filmmakers differ greatly from the tourists in this situation. The filmmaker is sort
of the in between of the tourists and anthropologist. For example, O Rourke himself is not portrayed in
the same manner that the other tourist are, but in the eyes of the local people, he is as much of a tourist
as anyone for the simple fact that he is white. However O Rourke differs from the tourists because he
is on their land with a goal in mind of creating a film. Lastly, the anthropologists are different from the
latter because they go to primitive cultures with a broader view to understand cross cultural
perspective. Meaning, that they have the job of studying and understanding one culture, but it is

Honduras Problems
Not too long ago, the United States witnessed the horror of seeing tens of thousands of
unaccompanied children from Honduras making one of the most dangerous journey to make it to the
U.S. southern border. It was an unexpected crisis for both countries which made Honduras a top
priority for former president Barack Obama. Today Honduras is under the radar of the U. S s foreign
policy; however, the country is still reeling from illicit drug trafficking, gang violence, and
government corruption. The United States has a vested interest in Honduran stability. Our
commitment to the Alliance for Prosperity in Central America is ensure the funds for the program are
properly distributed to enhance security, reduce government corruption, and provide economic
opportunity to combat poverty. Our national interest in the Central American hemisphere is to ensure
Honduras is elevated from these problems.
The demand in the United States for illegal drugs such as cocaine will continue to drive illicit drug
traffickers and criminals in Honduras to control government and corrupt officials. These (bad

Why Malaysia Is More Advanced Than Indonesia
Introduction The research paper aims to study the reasons why Malaysia is more advanced than
Indonesia despite the fact that Malaysia gained their independence years after Indonesia had gained
hers. Moreover, it aims to look at the reasons its economy is failing, effects of the reasons and how to
recover from the effects. It will act as a guide to not only Indonesia, but to other countries that may be
lagging behind in terms of development. The findings of the study will enhance better understanding
of the economic situation of the two countries and in the world, which will help not only leaders and
the affected country, but also other countries in the world. Results will guide policy formulations in
the countries to help improve their economy. Additionally, the paper aims to understand the Malaysian
and Indonesian domestic political processes involved in the formulation of foreign policies and
appreciate the history of the two countries. Finally, it will discuss the different causes of variant GDPs
in the two nations. The history of the two countries gets intertwined at some point; for many years,
there have been relations, migrations, and interactions between these two countries such that their
citizens can trace their relatives or origins from either country. Expounding on the similarities between
the two countries will be vital in the research. First and foremost, the two countries are located in the
continent of Asia and they have an almost similar national language,

Waimea Beach Research Paper
It was a bright and sunny friday, school had just got out not 2 hours prior, and me and my family
decided to head to the beach to start the weekend off before heading back to school that following
monday. On our way there I realized they were heading to Waimea Beach which is a good 30 minutes
from my house. I love Waimea beach, and has to be one of my favorite I ve ever been to. We had just
pulled up and parked and I was making my way to a spot right by the water when I saw a big crowd.
That s when I realised what day it was, it was high tide day, which meant the water was high enough,
with crashing on us, so that people could jump. Waimea is known for many things there on the island,
the amazing shrimp and food trucks, the enormous waves, very very ideal and perfect place to surf,
and importantly that day, the cliff jump. This Cliff was well over 50 feet, had three different levels in

Seligman s Theory Of Optimism
Notwithstanding the numerous advantages of pessimism, proven by studies, society continues to
condemn it. This is particularly due to the fact that optimism is viewed as more superior, compared to
pessimism. Author, Jon Gordon, reports, Whether we feed ourselves each day with negative fuel or
positive fuel ... our optimism has a big impact on our day (Gordon). Gordon conveys the fact that,
ultimately, optimism determines success, not pessimism. Additionally, Adam Sinicki, a psychology
graduate, comments that remaining optimistic during strenuous times will help alleviate the situation
because an individual is believing that matters will only mend (Sinicki). While there may be research
to support these claims, the truth is, they fail to shed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, what happens when there is too much hope, or cheerfulness is enforced among individuals?
Believe it or not, a forced and inordinate amount of optimism can be cataclysmic. As aforementioned,
Seligman s theory of learned optimism, the belief that optimism can be inculcated through the
avoidance of pessimistic reflections, optimism has afflicted the military in a negative manner.
Psychiatrist, Keith Ablow states that the armed services psychological stance is now influenced by ...
learned optimism wherein soldiers are actually taught to deny stress and trauma, and false bravado is
actually encouraged... (Ablow). In a The New Yorker article, Maria Konnikova writes, learned
helplessness [learned optimism] can indeed be a severe form of torture. The inability to control one s
environment has repeatedly been shown to create not only anger and frustration but, eventually, deep
and often insurmountable depression (Konnikova). United States Sergeant Robert Bales story is one of
many of how a forced and abundant amount of optimism has negatively affected the military. Bales
had been deployed to Iraq multiple times, one of which he had suffered a traumatic head injury. While
on a deployment, Bales killed 16 civilians in Afghanistan. Reports show that Bales was showing
psychiatric symptoms, prior to the massacre, but Ablow quarrels that the philosophical belief, learned
optimism, should be the one to blame (Ablow). When society pressurizes optimism upon people
during stressful times, it merely induces for more disputes and obstacles. Similar to Konnikova s
statement, if a person is already experiencing arduous sensations, obliging optimism only creates false
impressions, and that is the allure of pessimism. Pessimism does not necessarily always mean being
blunt or straightforward during fraught times, but possessing the ability to be

Analysis Of Sergei Prokofiev s Symphony
Andrew Burden

Allison Smith (TA)
Music 101
Sergei Prokofiev s Symphony No.1, Classical Symphony, a favorite to many, is a major piece of the
orchestral repertoire. The piece was composed from 1916 to 1917 and was in a new genre; neo
classism. This new genre was due the reaction to the expressionism and the perceived formlessness of
the late romantic music during the time period (Whittall). In fact, the Classical Symphony is one of the
earliest works of music using the aesthetic of the neo classical movement, and it is possibly the
earliest symphony to do so (Green). Despite being written in the early 20th century during the midst of
the Russian revolution, Prokfiev stayed true to the important aspects of pre romantic instrumentation
and structural, harmonic, and melodic styles. As previously stated, the Classical Symphony was
written in the midst of the Russian Revolutions in 1917. These revolutions were the cause of major
turning points in Russian history and Prokofiev was stuck at the heart of it in Petrograd, the current
day Saint Petersburg. Trouble during this period would begin with protests of thousands , escalating
with food fights and fires until tsar Nicholas was abdicated (Nice, 130). During this chain of events,
Prokofiev would find himself taking refuge from time to time behind projecting walls when the
shooting became too intense (Nice, 130). Lenin s return, massive strikes and the first of the Bolsheviks
attempts to seize power in July

The Debate Of Economics Between Bentham And Aristotle
A Debate of Economics Between Bentham and Aristotle
With all the many issues facing our country today it is difficult to pin down exactly what the biggest
issue is, so instead of picking the biggest issue I decided to pick the issue that has affected people the
most in this country as well as other countries which would be economics. When it comes to
economics the biggest issue facing our country is that we no longer produce what we need to keep up
with our economic system, so what if the philosophers that created the ideas and basic principles so
long ago were around now, and furthermore, what if they were running for the two thousand sixteen
presidential election? In the following I will present a debate between the famous philosophers
Bentham and Aristotle in regards to the current economic system.
Moderator:
First question of the debate: How would you, as US president restore the production of goods to
improve our economic system?
Aristotle s Response
As someone who believes in economic equality I believe that economic scarcity is an inevitable aspect
of human nature that being said, the action we must take as a country to improve is looking at
economic actions as a opportunity to use goods only as an essential for life. To conclude my answer to
this question I believe that as long as goods and services are used to have helpful uses to people it is
essential to our economy because if we are putting money into goods that are useless it s a waste of
money, and

The Character of Clay in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman...
The Character of Clay in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman
Clay is not naive. He may be misguided, misled, and mistaken, but he is anything but naive. Clay is an
individual who has shed the roots of his race, disregarding many of the cultural implications that such
a decision could have on him. He is a misguided individual who, because he is human, does the wrong
things at the wrong times for the wrong reasons. He continually struggles with his own identity and
the power struggle between him and Lula. The notion of power dynamics in The Dutchman is brought
forth in the character of Clay, who knows the limits of his power, takes the forbidden fruit from the
more powerful Lula, and fantasizes about his own life.

Staring at you? What do you mean?
LULA. Don t you know what staring means?
CLAY. I saw you through the window . . . if that s what it means. I don t know if I was staring. Seems
to me you were staring through the window at me.
LULA. I was. But only after I d turned around and saw you staring through that window down in the
vicinity of my ass and legs.
CLAY. Really?
LULA. Really. I guess you were just taking those idle pot shots. Nothing else to do. Run your mind
over people s flesh.
CLAY. Oh boy. Wow, now I admit I was looking in your direction. But the rest of that weight is yours.
(6 7)
Clay is timid in the dialogue, and he is somewhat taken aback or even embarrassed in the fourth line,
when he pauses. As one might expect, he is awkward and timid when approached by an individual
with a higher social status. Part of this is due to exterior appearances the fact that Lula is white
intimidates him. He doesn t totally deny staring at Lula, which could mean either that he was not
staring at her or simply that he did not want to admit it, fearful of the consequences. Like invisible
man s grandfather would want in Ellison s book, Clay is rarely confrontational with Lula. In this
instance, and in many others, he takes a more passive approach. In this case, Clay admits that he was
looking in Lula s direction.
Clay takes the middle road throughout much of the play. As Andrzej Ceynowa says in The Dramatic
Structure of Dutchman, The most he dares in his active

Donald Trump Effect
Donald Trump
Have you ever heard of Donald trump? If not he is a 70 year old man born June 14, 1946 in Queens,
New York City. He is a Republican running for president in the election of 2016. I believe he has had a
positive effect on the election because I don t think he s just doing it for the money and that he speaks
the truth about what the changes the United Sates needs.
The first reason I think Donald trump would be a good president is because he speaks the truth and is
honest about what he wants to do to change America. For example, Trump wants to build a wall on the
boarder of United States and Mexico so illegal immigrants can t come into America and commit
crimes and not pay taxes because the government doesn t know that they are illegal ... Show more

The reason I think that is because he already has a lot of money, for jobs, he is a business man,
television personality, author, investor, politician and more. All together he makes 8.7 billion dollars.
The president makes $400,000 per year, therefore I believe Trump isn t dong it for the money because
the president makes a lot less than what he does.
Some people such as Muslims, Mexicans, and Democrats might think that Donald Trump has had a
negative effect on the presidential election because they might think he says and does mean things to
people. But what he wants to do is fix America by, strengthening the army, shut down parts of the
internet where Isis can not us it to recruit American people. And provide more funding for police
training and a lot more. In my opinion he s saying what should be done to make America better than
what it is now.
In conclusion I think that Donald Trump has had a very positive effect on the presidential campaign he
speaks the truth and is not just doing it for the money. He has said everything he wants to do to make
America great again and I believe the that is what he will do if he becomes the president of the United

Islamic World View Beyond Islamic Development Strategy Essay
Islamic World View Beyond Islamic Development Strategy, Is It There?
Introduction
Allan Bullock and S.Trombley (1999) refer worldview to a general conception of the nature of the
world, particularly as containing or implying a system of value principles. What constructs such a
system of value principles may vary depending on each fundamental belief. It becomes essential to
know the various type of worldview as it helps us to comprehensively understand our own worldview
and gain insight from others. Just as a mirror allows us to see our own face, so an alternative coherent
worldview illuminates and clarifies our own worldview (Zaman, 2008).
Differences in worldview are the essential foundation of differences in any system, including
economic system. As Chapra (1992) said that worldview performs the same function for an economic
system as the foundation does for a building: even though the supporting foundation is invariably
invisible and unmentioned, it continues to play a determining role. In general, there are three major
economic systems which based on completely distinct worldviews: capitalism, socialism, and Islamic
economic system.
Capitalism and socialism as the prevailing systems have been proven to be unsuccessful in solving
economic problems comprehensively. One of the failure evidence, global financial crisis in 2008,
which demonstrated reckless financing instrument and moral deficiency, provides a wider opportunity
for Islamic moral economy to be perceived

Supplements are used by people who are looking to get additional nutrients that they may not be

muscle, minimize the effects of an illness or disability, and to recover from a heavy workout. One
supplement that is popular with the bodybuilding and fitness community are branched chain amino

Dieting and exercising with weights is generally good for people, but they may not see the results they

efforts.
BCAAs can help reverse this situation by reducing or slowing down the rate of proteins breaking
down and by stimulating protein synthesis. Leucine is the primary BCAA that produces these results,
and its effects may be stronger than regular protein on its own. BCAAs may also help people to
workout for longer periods of time with more intensity by inhibiting the amino acid tryptophan from
entering the brain and converting into serotonin which cause a sense of fatigue.
Who Should Take BCAA Supplements?
Adults who are healthy, perform light to moderate exercise several times a week, and have a diet that
includes meat, seafood, eggs, dairy products, and legumes do not need to take BCAA supplements.
Children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people dealing with chronic alcoholism should only
take BCAAs under a doctor s supervision. People who may benefit from taking BCAA supplements

Why We Need The Military
We must never forget why we have, and why we need our military. Our armed forces exist solely to
ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we
have guardians at the gate, said Allen West,a retired Army lieutenant colonel and a former member of
the House of Representatives. He explained America s need for a strong military perfectly in this
quote. The United States depends on their military to protect them from all different kinds of threats
like cyber warfare or terrorist attacks.
In order to see why an increase in military spending is needed, one must look at the damaged
equipment, the need for new and improved equipment and then look at what it would take to defeat
ISIS.
After the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the amount of damaged equipment was immense. The Army
and the Marine Corps lost about 40 percent of their ground equipment from the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan. The military still needs to replace some of the damaged equipment from the end of the
Iraq war in 2011. Some of the vehicles got blasted by bombs, others got covered up by desert sand,

Examples Of Disease Imagery In Macbeth
Humans have always had the need for power. Macbeth is a noble man that craves power, and when he
is offered a chance to grab that power, he takes it. The Tragedy of Macbeth, by Shakespeare, shows a
noble man like Macbeth, who is tempted with the thought of having power but eventually has to give
it up. The idea of sickness and healing is mentioned throughout the story to describe Scotland s tyrant
and the healing power of England. Shakespeare utilizes disease/healing imagery to reveal how
unnatural deeds breed unnatural consequences and how the suffering that ensues from the murder of
Duncan must ultimately be remedied via retribution.
The disease imagery reveals impurity. The proposal for control and gaining ability to rule Scotland is

He realizes in order to remain as king, he must get rid of anyone that is simply suspicious of him,
hence O, full of scorpions is my mind . Although, he does not realize this, Kings are supposed to heal

The Benefits of Human Genetic Engineering Essay
Pre implantation genetic diagnosis is a revolutionary procedure that utilizes in vitro fertilization to
implant a healthy egg cell into the mother s uterus after it is screened for mutations or other
abnormalities. That way, only healthy eggs can develop to term and become beautiful, bouncing boys
or girls. Designer babies have a bright future in the face of science because they are genetically
engineered to be: disease free; viable donors for a sibling or parent; and with optional elimination of
any severe cosmetic disorders that might develop, without risk to human diversity in the future. One
of the most well known, wide spread, and enigmatic diseases on this Earth is cancer. It sneaks its way
into family blood lines and travels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If money were not in the equation, this might someday be a viable cure for cancers. If geneticists
screened every embryo and removed the cancerous genes, they could potentially exterminate the
disease! This would take years and not every child could be accounted for, but it would be a start.
Embryo Screening is a Godsend for couples who might have otherwise passed on an inherited disease
like Huntington s. Huntington s disease is degenerative, destroying nerve cells in the brain and
affecting the use of muscles and hindering cognitive thinking. The onset of [Huntington s Disease]

onset, have already passed on the disease to their kids without knowing it. Pre implantation could have
prevented this from occurring. But what if the disease was a disability instead, like deafness or
blindness? Most families turn to embryo screening as a way to ferret out harmful genes and eliminate
disability but there is another side to PGD called negative enhancement . On this flip side, The
technique [of PGD] also may... [be used] to select an embryo likely to have the same disease or
disability, such as deafness, that affects the parents (Naik). A child who shared the parents disability
would grow up accustomed and suited to the lifestyle, whereas a child not born with that disability

The new rules of modern day baseball involved the ability to steal bases, how the fields were built,
and how many players are allowed on one team in the MLB. Bat sizes along with pitchers mounds
have been changed as well for new requirements in the MLB. The new rules also allowed a batter to
take a free base when hit by a pitch, or when taken four balls out of the strike zone. Many changes
have been changed since starting the game until todays game, such as, instead of a team winning when
one side scored twenty one aces, a team today wins by scoring the most runs through nine innings of
baseball. In 1858, strikes were introduced and now batters could get called out on strikes. In 1863 the
bat size regulation was introduced, someone had to have a required size bat to play. Batting averages
were introduced in 1865 along with the batter being able to call a low or high pitch in 1867. The most
recent rule was in 2008 when the MLB added limited instant reply to be in affect for all games, this
started August 29, 2008. In todays baseball, there are rules in which a limited amount of players can
be on a team, and all the extra players go to either free agency or go to double AA or triple AAA. The
save rule was finally changed in 1975 along with the suspension of players using bats that are filled,
flattened, or doctored. There have been many Home Run leaders throughout the years of Baseball. The
leaders have hit many home runs to be in this group, some have hit as

Stephen Dedalus Themes
Stephen Dedalus is a creature obsessed. He hunts and prowls to find one true meaning to the world
through artistic beauty, to find truth through an aesthetic. He finds a way to balance intellectuality and
art with his set of philosophical principals called an aesthetic. Stephen Dedalus, the central character,
acts as an alternate reflection of the author in this semi autobiographical fiction A Portrait of the Artist
as a Young Man by James Joyce. Joyce primarily uses the early development of Stephen and the
impact it has on his life to demonstrate his themes and ideas. He uses this, especially to demonstrate
how Stephen arrives at his principals. Stephen has many interactions with the Catholic Church he
grew up with and the religion. He struggles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stephen thinks that the rhyme is not poetry, even though it has the form of a poem (Joyce, 8). The
difference between Stephen and his friend is that one thing does not become art only because it takes
the form of art. What Stephen wrote might be considered more artful because it had a statement: What
is after the Universe? (13). His mind is grasping at the nature of the world through beauty. Stephen
demonstrates this further, by writing an essay comparing Irish political leader Parnell to Julius Caesar
as a figure who is betrayed. Little Stephen, like Joyce makes the psycho causal connection...[He]
already understands the now in relation to the past (Watchel 14 15). His propensity to connect the
present to the past as is the case with his essay about Parnell demonstrates what Watchel is saying:
Stephen s hunger for the aesthetic is not only displayed in his thoughts on beauty, but also in his
ability to appreciate artistic connections in life. Stephen certainly has always had natural creativity, but
what Joyce does with Stephens expression of beauty, explains how Stephen builds his

This presentation fits into the class because we discussed in great depths about the wage gap that our
society has between men and women in the workplace. Sandberg makes more than the average male
her net worth in 2016 was 1.39 billion dollars. It is important that men and women start being treated
equally. Sandberg discusses the issue of why there are only a few women leaders and how to keep
women in the workforce to create more leaders. She also talks about how women should act and how
society should be treating them. It is important that she addresses these issues because the wage gap
not just in America but also all over the world is a huge issue. Right now women working full time
earn 81 percent of what full time workingmen make. There is a 19 percent wage gap between men and
women. It s 2016 we need to live in a society where both men and women have equal chances in the
workplace and we should more commonly see women in positions of power in all different sectors of

The Theme Of Time In Michael Cunningham s The Hours
Time: A Gift and a Curse
Time is the one thing that is constant in life. For some, this provides a remedy for anxiety. The idea
that time will go on, no matter the events it beholds can provide comfort. However, other people see
this clock that never ceases as a trap, containing its prisoners in a life of misery. This concept is ever
so daunting in Michael Cunningham s novel, The Hours. His three main characters, Clarissa Vaughan,
Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf, live in three different time periods. Through the span of twenty four
hours their stories intertwine, defying the rules of time which the characters themselves were left to
contemplate. In his novel, The Hours, Michael Cunningham s characters, Clarissa, Laura, and Virginia
demonstrate both the negative and positive connotations associated with a progression of time through
their narratives. Virginia and Laura, provide the negative connotations of time. Virginia is restrained
by the toll that time has taken on her mental health. Laura is tortured by the plainness of her life and
the idea of time prolonging agony. Lastly, Clarissa provides the positive connotations of time. She
emphasizes the importance of appreciating life. Through these opposing viewpoints, Michael
Cunningham introduces the bittersweet concepts of time.
The oldest character of the three is Virginia Woolf, a notorious author of the early twentieth century
who is known to have killed herself. Cunningham writes of Virginia s own personal thoughts

Essay on The Rise in Female Gang Members
Many people recognize that gangs have been around for what seems like forever. What they don t
realize is that the numbers are increasing to amazing proportions, there were 28,000 youth gangs with
780,200 members in the United States (in 2000) and 20% to 46% of those members are female
(Evans). And what is even more shocking is, in Chicago alone there are 16,000 to 20,000 female gang
members (Eghigian). These girls start out as ?groupies?, become members, and sometimes even
leaders of all girl gangs because of troubles in the home, a need for money, for the social scene, or just
because it is all they know.

gangs while, two still are. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abner tells of Jonelle (nicknamed BabyJ), who is the oldest of three, who had a gang member and
incarcerated father and a mother addicted to crack. She needed to be the support system to her family
and turned to her father?s same gang to help her sell drugs and to make her feel like she had a family
who cared (Abner). This story is not only the story of Jonelle, there are many other girls like her who
have no choice but to become gang members.
Many of these girls, as Abner tells, come from homes where they parents were original gangsters
(founding members), or O.G.?s. They grow up with a ?strong gang presence?, and that gang turns into
their own family (Eghigian). Usually, the gang presence is found within the relationships between
their parents, friends, and boyfriends. These gangs make the girls feel at home because of the ties the
membership comes with. Once a member, they will most likely always be a member because of ties ?
that supersede blood ties? (Abner). But not all girls are looking for a super strong bond with a
community, some are just looking for a party, the social scene that gang life comes with. They look for
people to spend time with, to skip school, gossip, listen to music, get high, and flirt with the male gang
members (Abner). Those that often join for the male gang member were usually sexually abused, and
now engage in sexual behavior with them. They earn reputations as ?toss ups? by

Born Poor And Smart By Angela Locke
In chapter sixteen, Social Class and Inequality the essays show different cases in which being rich,
poor, smart or middle class can affect a person. In the writings of Angela Locke in Born Poor and
Smart (338 339) Angela summarizes her life of what it was like growing up with a poor, yet smart
mother. However, in When Shelter Feels like a Prison (374 376) Charmion Browne writes about being
poor, and living in homeless shelters. Somethings in life, are no more than learning experiences, and
only you can change it. First off, lets discuss the essay of Angela Locke. Angela grew up in a
household that was poor. Her mother worked at the E Z Bargain Center. When not working there she

Being left feeling like she had no place and that she belonged nowhere. Something that Angela battles
with until the present time is feeling the privelage that can distinguish her from the rich and the poor.
Wealthy people never question their worth. They don t seem like they need to since they were brought
up with a golden spoon in their mouth, they feel as if they are better than people. However, in my
opinion someone like Angela Locke is the one that shouldn t question her worth. She is the one who
rose up against the odds and made something of herself and wasn t handed everything in life. Class
relations isn t only about having a monetary value. It also can be about having a relationship to
success. Angela says that My definition of success has something to do with money, but everything to
do with class. (339) To break that statement down, she doesn t feel that she needs to only be rich, but
have more class and social standing. However I don t think that someone should compare themselves
to another person. Just because one person is more successful than another, it doesn t always mean
they earned it like the one that worked their way up from nothing. The person that works their way up
has way more class in my opinion because they know what it s like to be at the bottom, and the ones
that come from wealth never have known that feeling. In a different, yet similar perspective Charmion
Browne discusses what it is like growing up in homeless

Unemployment In Unemployment
The influx of immigration in the past twenty years has adjusted the economy surrounding the United
States work force. According to the 2016 Current Population Survey, immigrants and their U.S. born
children now number approximately 84.3 million people, or 27 percent of the overall U.S. population.
(http://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/frequently requested statistics immigrants and immigration
united states#CurrentHistoricalNumbers). In the same year, it was reported that 27.0 billion foreign
born persons occupied jobs in the United State s workforce, making up 16.9% of the total.
(https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/forbrn.pdf). These statistics have sparked a debate surrounding
the allowance of immigrants into the United States work force and the consideration of the short and
long term affects immigrants have on the economy surrounding the US job market.
One disputed topic pertains to immigrants decreasing available jobs and negatively affecting wages.
According to an article published on Penn Wharton Budget Model, written in June 2016, influx in
immigration in recent years has no long term affects upon the salaries and the quantity of American
jobs. The article states that immigration has no affect on wage growth for Native born citizens due to
companies responding to influxes of immigrant participation with increase investments; thus offsetting
a loss of capital per worker.

Mass Media and Its Influence Negative Influence on American Society
It is the power that shapes and molds the mind of virtually every citizen, young or old, rich or poor,
simple or sophisticated (Sweet Liberty, 2000, 1). The media is a part of everyday life in America.
News and events outside of one s home or neighborhood are brought to their area via the newspaper,
magazines, radio, television, and the internet. As the quote above mentions mass media, and its
components, are very powerful and are capable of influencing one s mind, as well as their behavior.

Children are easily swayed and influenced by the many images and pictures presented to them through
the media. By high school graduation, children will have spent roughly 50 percent more time in front
of a television than in front of a teacher (Dudley, 1999, 32). Parents, often times, are too drained or pre
occupied with their own lives, leading their children to find comfort in watching television or playing
video games which, consequently, become the prime examples for their actions and behaviors. For all
too many Americans, the real world has been replaced by the false reality of the TV... (Sweet Liberty,
2000, 2). These children hear the news and watch shows and films where innocent people are being
stolen from or being killed, but they have nobody there to teach them the difference between what is
real and what is not, what is right and what is wrong.
An article printed in Time magazine, titled Suburban Smackdown, is a great example of how the
media persuades children to impersonate what they view on television. The article concentrates on the
violence of wrestling and how some children and young adults are putting on shows, costumes, masks
and all, for their neighbors based on these wrestling characters they see on TV. It may not be the Rock
vs. the Undertaker on prime time TV, but the high school boys of the Extreme Wrestling Federation of

Pros And Cons Of Global Corruption
Global Corruption
Corruption can be defined as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It can be classified as
grand, petty and political, depending on the amounts of money lost and the sector where it occurs.
Bribery, extortion and embezzlement are the three principle versions of corruption. For instance, an
employee of a firm who is in charge of purchasing functions takes some amount of money from a
supplier (bribery), in which that same employee ensures the payment for the products to be above the
usual price. Then the residuary amount between the actual price and the turgid price after bribery
would get siphoned off by the employee and the supplier (embezzlement). If it s the case of political
corruption, an exemplifying scenario can be, some government officials use their positions to extort
payments from some government regulated firms. Expectably, economic corruption impairs
development and political corruption depraves prospering governance. Unfortunately, both of these
types of corruption continuously persist all around the world .
Every year, Transparency International publishes a Global Corruption Index analyzing each country s
projected corruption predicated on the scope of bribery, illegitimate government expenditures and
absence of anti corruption regulations . For the last few decades, some countries have been
continuously occupying the end of the list together. By the end of last year, the top three most
corrupted countries were Afghanistan, Somalia and North Korea. Almost all of Afghanistan s
widespread corruption is connected to misuse of aid money that was provided to the country by
international entities. The Afghan government in 2012 promised to put efforts to diminish the
problem, however because of the fact that public officials are the largest beneficiaries from corruption,
there is not much of significant improvements has been made towards corruption reduction . Somalia
has experienced similar issues as well. One of the World Bank reports showed that within the matter
of 2 years, the aid money that Somalia received which is around $130 million . Furthermore, Somalia
s private companies have been reportedly paying certain fees to the government officials in exchange

  • 2. Napoleon Bonaparte As A French Revolution Started from a mere soldier, Napoleon Bonaparte was able to ascend the throne of an Emperor. Frequently at war, he schemed and maneuvered his way through politics to be at the top of France. This brings up the question of what made him want to be the Emperor of France. Napoleon Bonaparte was a man that genuinely understood his own motives and ambitions. He was able to foster the motive of saving France from the bloody French Revolution and ambition of gaining power by utilizing revolutionary ideas combined with his own to accumulate power and stability of imperial rule. This occurred due to being a product of the enlightenment, power hungry personality, ego, and use of manipulation. Firstly, Napoleon was a product of the enlightenment era. He combined French Revolutionary ideals with his own to further his objective in order to stabilize his rule and gain the favour of the French population. According to Patterns of World History , life, liberty, equality, social contract, property, representation, nation, popular sovereignty, and constitution are the product of French ideals.[1] Napoleon only used liberty and equality which were the most popular with the citizens.[2] He described that once Italy had tasted the benefits of a wise and liberal administration, it would be simply impossible for them to return back to their old way of life.[3] With the concept of liberty and equality incorporated into the constitution, it was possible that Napoleon wanted the conquered ... Silverman argues that O Rourke constructed a limited view of the New Guinea tribes. Silverman attributes the eroding authenticity to the tourists pursuit for entertainment in exchange for money. For instance, O Rourke s interviews mostly covered reactions from tourists and how they gawked over the natives, arrogantly depicting their primitive lives. Waimea Beach Research Paper It was a bright and sunny friday, school had just got out not 2 hours prior, and me and my family decided to head to the beach to start the weekend off before heading back to school that following monday. On our way there I realized they were heading to Waimea Beach which is a good 30 minutes from my house. I love Waimea beach, and has to be one of my favorite I ve ever been to. We had just pulled up and parked and I was making my way to a spot right by the water when I saw a big crowd. That s when I realised what day it was, it was high tide day, which meant the water was high enough, with crashing on us, so that people could jump. Waimea is known for many things there on the island, the amazing shrimp and food trucks, the enormous waves, very very ideal and perfect place to surf, and importantly that day, the cliff jump. • 10. Seligman s Theory Of Optimism Notwithstanding the numerous advantages of pessimism, proven by studies, society continues to condemn it. This is particularly due to the fact that optimism is viewed as more superior, compared to pessimism. Author, Jon Gordon, reports, Whether we feed ourselves each day with negative fuel or positive fuel ... our optimism has a big impact on our day (Gordon). Gordon conveys the fact that, ultimately, optimism determines success, not pessimism. Additionally, Adam Sinicki, a psychology graduate, comments that remaining optimistic during strenuous times will help alleviate the situation because an individual is believing that matters will only mend (Sinicki). However, what happens when there is too much hope, or cheerfulness is enforced among individuals? Believe it or not, a forced and inordinate amount of optimism can be cataclysmic. As aforementioned, Seligman s theory of learned optimism, the belief that optimism can be inculcated through the avoidance of pessimistic reflections, optimism has afflicted the military in a negative manner. Psychiatrist, Keith Ablow states that the armed services psychological stance is now influenced by ... learned optimism wherein soldiers are actually taught to deny stress and trauma, and false bravado is actually encouraged... (Ablow). In a The New Yorker article, Maria Konnikova writes, learned helplessness [learned optimism] can indeed be a severe form of torture. The inability to control one s environment has repeatedly been shown to create not only anger and frustration but, eventually, deep and often insurmountable depression (Konnikova). United States Sergeant Robert Bales story is one of many of how a forced and abundant amount of optimism has negatively affected the military. Bales had been deployed to Iraq multiple times, one of which he had suffered a traumatic head injury. While on a deployment, Bales killed 16 civilians in Afghanistan. Reports show that Bales was showing psychiatric symptoms, prior to the massacre, but Ablow quarrels that the philosophical belief, learned optimism, should be the one to blame (Ablow). When society pressurizes optimism upon people during stressful times, it merely induces for more disputes and obstacles. Similar to Konnikova s statement, if a person is already experiencing arduous sensations, obliging optimism only creates false impressions, and that is the allure of pessimism. • 11. Analysis Of Sergei Prokofiev s Symphony Andrew Burden 4/24/16 Allison Smith (TA) Music 101 Sergei Prokofiev s Symphony No.1, Classical Symphony, a favorite to many, is a major piece of the orchestral repertoire. The piece was composed from 1916 to 1917 and was in a new genre; neo classism. This new genre was due the reaction to the expressionism and the perceived formlessness of the late romantic music during the time period (Whittall). In fact, the Classical Symphony is one of the earliest works of music using the aesthetic of the neo classical movement, and it is possibly the earliest symphony to do so (Green). Despite being written in the early 20th century during the midst of the Russian revolution, Prokfiev stayed true to the important aspects of pre romantic instrumentation and structural, harmonic, and melodic styles. As previously stated, the Classical Symphony was written in the midst of the Russian Revolutions in 1917. These revolutions were the cause of major turning points in Russian history and Prokofiev was stuck at the heart of it in Petrograd, the current day Saint Petersburg. Trouble during this period would begin with protests of thousands , escalating with food fights and fires until tsar Nicholas was abdicated (Nice, 130). During this chain of events, Prokofiev would find himself taking refuge from time to time behind projecting walls when the shooting became too intense (Nice, 130). • 12. The Debate Of Economics Between Bentham And Aristotle A Debate of Economics Between Bentham and Aristotle With all the many issues facing our country today it is difficult to pin down exactly what the biggest issue is, so instead of picking the biggest issue I decided to pick the issue that has affected people the most in this country as well as other countries which would be economics. When it comes to economics the biggest issue facing our country is that we no longer produce what we need to keep up with our economic system, so what if the philosophers that created the ideas and basic principles so long ago were around now, and furthermore, what if they were running for the two thousand sixteen presidential election? In the following I will present a debate between the famous philosophers Bentham and Aristotle in regards to the current economic system. Moderator: First question of the debate: How would you, as US president restore the production of goods to improve our economic system? Aristotle s Response As someone who believes in economic equality I believe that economic scarcity is an inevitable aspect of human nature that being said, the action we must take as a country to improve is looking at economic actions as a opportunity to use goods only as an essential for life. To conclude my answer to this question I believe that as long as goods and services are used to have helpful uses to people it is essential to our economy because if we are putting money into goods that are useless it s a waste of money, and ... (6 7) Clay is timid in the dialogue, and he is somewhat taken aback or even embarrassed in the fourth line, when he pauses. As one might expect, he is awkward and timid when approached by an individual with a higher social status. Part of this is due to exterior appearances the fact that Lula is white intimidates him. He doesn t totally deny staring at Lula, which could mean either that he was not staring at her or simply that he did not want to admit it, fearful of the consequences. Like invisible man s grandfather would want in Ellison s book, Clay is rarely confrontational with Lula. In this instance, and in many others, he takes a more passive approach. I believe he has had a positive effect on the election because I don t think he s just doing it for the money and that he speaks the truth about what the changes the United Sates needs. • 18. Islamic World View Beyond Islamic Development Strategy Essay Islamic World View Beyond Islamic Development Strategy, Is It There? Introduction Allan Bullock and S.Trombley (1999) refer worldview to a general conception of the nature of the world, particularly as containing or implying a system of value principles. What constructs such a system of value principles may vary depending on each fundamental belief. It becomes essential to know the various type of worldview as it helps us to comprehensively understand our own worldview and gain insight from others. Just as a mirror allows us to see our own face, so an alternative coherent worldview illuminates and clarifies our own worldview (Zaman, 2008). Differences in worldview are the essential foundation of differences in any system, including economic system. As Chapra (1992) said that worldview performs the same function for an economic system as the foundation does for a building: even though the supporting foundation is invariably invisible and unmentioned, it continues to play a determining role. In general, there are three major economic systems which based on completely distinct worldviews: capitalism, socialism, and Islamic economic system. Capitalism and socialism as the prevailing systems have been proven to be unsuccessful in solving economic problems comprehensively. One of the failure evidence, global financial crisis in 2008, which demonstrated reckless financing instrument and moral deficiency, provides a wider opportunity for Islamic moral economy to be perceived ... Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we have guardians at the gate, said Allen West,a retired Army lieutenant colonel and a former member of the House of Representatives. He explained America s need for a strong military perfectly in this quote. The United States depends on their military to protect them from all different kinds of threats like cyber warfare or terrorist attacks. In order to see why an increase in military spending is needed, one must look at the damaged equipment, the need for new and improved equipment and then look at what it would take to defeat ISIS. After the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the amount of damaged equipment was immense. The Army and the Marine Corps lost about 40 percent of their ground equipment from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Benefits of Human Genetic Engineering Essay Pre implantation genetic diagnosis is a revolutionary procedure that utilizes in vitro fertilization to implant a healthy egg cell into the mother s uterus after it is screened for mutations or other abnormalities. • 27. The Theme Of Time In Michael Cunningham s The Hours Time: A Gift and a Curse Time is the one thing that is constant in life. For some, this provides a remedy for anxiety. The idea that time will go on, no matter the events it beholds can provide comfort. However, other people see this clock that never ceases as a trap, containing its prisoners in a life of misery. This concept is ever so daunting in Michael Cunningham s novel, The Hours. His three main characters, Clarissa Vaughan, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf, live in three different time periods. Through the span of twenty four hours their stories intertwine, defying the rules of time which the characters themselves were left to contemplate. In his novel, The Hours, Michael Cunningham s characters, Clarissa, Laura, and Virginia demonstrate both the negative and positive connotations associated with a progression of time through their narratives. Virginia and Laura, provide the negative connotations of time. Virginia is restrained by the toll that time has taken on her mental health. Laura is tortured by the plainness of her life and the idea of time prolonging agony. Lastly, Clarissa provides the positive connotations of time. She emphasizes the importance of appreciating life. Through these opposing viewpoints, Michael Cunningham introduces the bittersweet concepts of time. And what is even more shocking is, in Chicago alone there are 16,000 to 20,000 female gang members (Eghigian). These girls start out as ?groupies?, become members, and sometimes even leaders of all girl gangs because of troubles in the home, a need for money, for the social scene, or just because it is all they know. This story is not only the story of Jonelle, there are many other girls like her who have no choice but to become gang members. Many of these girls, as Abner tells, come from homes where they parents were original gangsters (founding members), or O.G.?s. They look for people to spend time with, to skip school, gossip, listen to music, get high, and flirt with the male gang members (Abner). However, in my opinion someone like Angela Locke is the one that shouldn t question her worth. She is the one who rose up against the odds and made something of herself and wasn t handed everything in life. Class relations isn t only about having a monetary value. • 32. Pros And Cons Of Global Corruption Global Corruption Corruption can be defined as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It can be classified as grand, petty and political, depending on the amounts of money lost and the sector where it occurs. Bribery, extortion and embezzlement are the three principle versions of corruption. For instance, an employee of a firm who is in charge of purchasing functions takes some amount of money from a supplier (bribery), in which that same employee ensures the payment for the products to be above the usual price. Then the residuary amount between the actual price and the turgid price after bribery would get siphoned off by the employee and the supplier (embezzlement). If it s the case of political corruption, an exemplifying scenario can be, some government officials use their positions to extort payments from some government regulated firms. Expectably, economic corruption impairs development and political corruption depraves prospering governance. Unfortunately, both of these types of corruption continuously persist all around the world . Every year, Transparency International publishes a Global Corruption Index analyzing each country s projected corruption predicated on the scope of bribery, illegitimate government expenditures and absence of anti corruption regulations . For the last few decades, some countries have been continuously occupying the end of the list together. By the end of last year, the top three most corrupted countries were Afghanistan, Somalia and North Korea. Almost all of Afghanistan s widespread corruption is connected to misuse of aid money that was provided to the country by international entities. The Afghan government in 2012 promised to put efforts to diminish the problem, however because of the fact that public officials are the largest beneficiaries from corruption, there is not much of significant improvements has been made towards corruption reduction .
