The Korean War began in 1950 when North Korea, backed by the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea. The United Nations authorized troops led by General Douglas MacArthur to defend South Korea. MacArthur's forces were initially pushed back but then launched a successful counterattack that drove North Korean forces almost to the Chinese border. However, China then entered the war by sending troops to aid North Korea, pushing UN forces back to near their starting point. The war then stalemated along the original border between North and South Korea, with both sides unable to gain further territory. General MacArthur was replaced by General Matthew Ridgway after calling for expanding the war into China.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence.
