Hypothyroidism is a clinical syndrome resulting from a deficiency of thyroid hormones, which causes a generalized slowing of metabolic processes. It can occur in newborns (cretinism), adolescents (short stature and mental retardation), and adults (largely reversible symptoms after therapy). Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a common cause of hypothyroidism due to chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. Treatment involves lifelong levothyroxine replacement therapy to replace T4, with dosages tailored based on serum TSH and T4 levels.
