The loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, is a threatened species with a highly migratory behavior
and shifting habitat requirements depending on maturity (NMFS and USFWS 1998). The
loggerhead nesting grounds are typically in warm temperate regions (NMFS and USFWS 1998).
In the original listing from USFWS (1978), the loggerhead sea turtle was listed as threatened

Nesting habitat degradation is an anthropogenic threat to the loggerhead sea turtles. These threats
include coastal development, erosion control barriers or beach armoring, artificial lighting,
pollution, removal of native vegetation, and vehicle and pedestrian traffic (NMFS and USFWS
2007). Some solutions include protecting and managing turtles on nesting beaches, monitor coastal
construction, implement lighting regulations, screen artificial lighting with vegetation, and impose
regulations on beach armoring (NMFS and USFWS 1998). Predation is an important threat to
consider in nesting areas for the loggerhead. Many places have depredation to protect the eggs and
hatchlings against predators such as feral dogs, raccoons, and foxes (NMFS and USFWS 2007).
The future outlook for the loggerhead turtle has been studied using two analyses, one looked at
counts of nesting females and the other analysis was a stage based population model done to look
at the anthropogenic mortalities with respect to the vital rates of the species (Conant et al. 2009).
Using these analyses, it was determined that for the North Atlantic Ocean DPS there was a greater
likelihood of quasi extinction for the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Dream Deferral And Closure In The Women Of Brewster Place
Unfulfilled Dreams and Deferring Closure
In her critical essay, Dream, Deferral and Closure in The Women of Brewster Place Jill Matus
writes about the theme of unfulfilled dreams as it is portrayed in Gloria Naylor s The Women of
Brewster Place. Matus s main argument about this theme can be summarized as her belief that
Naylor uses the dream described at the end of the novel as an out an end that allows her to not
commit to one conclusion or other; a deferral of closure, if you will. A reader might ask what the
purpose of such a noncommittal ending is as it relates to the novel as a whole. Matus offers some
answers to this question by claiming that the text and, more symbolically, the lives of the
characters and setting of the novel are prolonged by the deferred ending because of the
presentation of dream and in turn the dream affirms and perpetuates the life of the street and
characters. In other words, Matus argument could be interpreted as the belief that the dream as it
is presented in the end of the novel leaves a sense of hope for an otherwise decaying setting and
lives.
Personally, I agree with Matus s conclusions about how the ending works for the novel even
though it is not really an ending at all. I was convinced of this argument based on how she uses
Langston Hughes s poem Harlem about deferred dreams to illustrate how the end of the novel is
Naylor s way of reimagining the same message of the poem. In the poem, Hughes writes about
the fate of dreams that are deferred or unfulfilled. He writes that these dreams dry up like raisins
in the sun, fester like sores, stink like rotten meat, crust over like a syrupy sweet. Matus writes that
she is interested in looking at the way in which Naylor rethinks the poem in her novel s attention to
dreams and desires and deferral, and then to consider the implications of her vision in terms of the
novel s sensitivity to history and social context (50). The unfulfillment of dreams and desires are
two major recurring themes in the novel and what makes the ending of the novel so interesting is
that it is a narrative illustration of these themes. The unassuming reader is actually left unfulfilled
because the seeming conclusion to the novel is taken away

Juvenile justice has traditionally followed a punitive model when faced with young transgressors.
Most juvenile justice departments have then also followed this model, creating a system that is in
effect not only separate from the community, but also from the family unit. Many juvenile
offenders are then physically removed both from their communities and their families to be
incarcerated into punitive institutions. According to the Balanced and Restorative Justice model,
however, accountability is best encouraged with the direct involvement of both the community and
the family unit (U.S. Dept. of Justice). This is also the case with young John Black, whose offense
was possession of a fire arm, although this did not lead to any actual harm to others. He is therefore
an excellent candidate for family and community based programs, helping him to learn
accountability and find his place in society in an effective and productive way. Probation in juvenile
justice has a very specific role. The first important thing to keep in mind is the underlying reasons
for crimes committed by youth and the importance of distinguishing this from the reasons why
adults would engage in criminal activity (King County, 2012). As such, the Juvenile Probation
Office regards accountability as important when young people like John commit crimes, but it is

City of Thieves starts off with Lev Beniov sitting atop his roof, on a firefighting detail, under the
German siege of Leningrad in Kirov, Russia. As he sits on top of his building s roof with his
friends Vera Osiponva, and the Antokolsky twins they listen to anti aircraft fire, and they see a
paratrooper falling to the ground. The group hops the Kirov gate, and runs towards the
paratrooper s landing sight, realizing he is drifting to the ground dead. They began looting his
body, and as Lev got a German knife from the man, the GAZ turned on Voinova Street, and they
had to run. While running back to Kirov, Vera slipped, and Lev had to go and get her. As he
helped her over the fence, the GAZ grabbed him. Since it was after curfew, he believed execution
was inevitable. He was taken to Piter s prison called the Crosses with no light or sound. Soon, a
Russian officer named Kolya was thrown in the cell with him. In the morning, the two prisoners
were taken to a mansion with NKVD officers in it. The Colonel had a mission for the prisoners.
He took their ration cards, and told Kolya and Lev they had until Thursday to get one dozen
eggs. On that Saturday morning, Kolya and Lev had left their lives on the line for a dozen eggs.
