Netnography in online dating services
The study explored the experiences of female users of online dating sites through netnography. Designing information architectures involves making and imposing value choices, which positions the work and study of information architecture in the realm of ethics.
The information architecture community has considered ethics at the micro level, for instance by finding ways to do good in specific interactions. But to what extent have we thought about ethics in the context of our overall profession? When we design IAs do we, as practitioners, surrender our moral authority to someone else? Or do we follow a code?
Case Study
Over 45% of employers use social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to screen potential job candidates. Things that turn employers away include inappropriate photos, information about drugs/alcohol, badmouthing previous employers and poor communication skills. Employers like profiles that show true personality and qualifications. However, requiring access to applicants' social media passwords could violate privacy rights and freedom of speech. There is an ongoing debate around whether individuals should challenge these practices or risk missed job opportunities to stand up for their rights.

The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

- People have always fallen in love… First step of course is a date. In today’s world, online dating is the new means to an end. But do people actually date online or simply “meet”?
- Are online dating websites nothing more than online introduction services?
- Human need to feel connected… how this extends to romantic relationships?
- This ties in with attachment theory in two ways: Similarity: people seek people they are more similar to Proximity: even though people who meet online may not be close geographically, the internet helps bring them closer in a virtual world
- Moreover, according to CMC theory, online dating is a typical hyper-personal communication which is helpful for promoting romantic relationships:
- *90% of information is accurate with a few embellishments.
- Culture deception: people who have a more conservative background resort to deception in order to attract matches from same background (e.g. claim to not drink, claim to be more particular about clothes)
- Users: different age, personalities, professors, educations, religious etc.
- 1. Quantitative methods is from Social Science aspect: Post-positive. Objective, value-free. Large numbers of surveys can be distributed through different Dating websites to fullfill cultural and sampling research gaps. 2. Qualitative methods is from Cultural Study aspect: Interpretative, subjective, local-understanding. It consists of ethnography and content analysis. 3.Participant Observation can be conducted to observe 1) the process of creating the first profile 2) emotional responds to other people’s messages 3) behavior in reality dating and daily life.
- 1. Mention matrimonial guy – his aim was to bring people together of a similar religious and cultural backgrounds and made it into a commercial venture. 2. Talk about 2 nd interviewee who felt the machine-matches and not a good fit
- Mention GPS data, comparing text, time of usage, usage patterns, tie in with Facebook/Twitter
- Mention some current online chat sites that require credit card validation such as MSN
- In conclusion, current online dating is version 1.0 of what could be a very dynamic convergence of SP and CS, akin to web 2.0
