2. River Krka
 Krka is a river in Croatia that flows into the Adriatic Sea
near city of Šibenik.
 It is located in Dalmatia, in the Šibenik-Knin County.
 It is a National Park famous for its waterfalls .

3.  Next to the iconic Skradinski Buk
waterfall you can find Hydroelectric
Power Plant Krka - the first
alternating current power system in
Europe.
 It is the second oldest hydroelectric
power plant in the entire world,
having opened only two days after
the world's first one - Tesla's
hydroelectric power plant on
Niagara Falls in the USA. The Krka
was also constructed after Tesla's
design.

4. • Nikola Tesla was born on
July 10, 1856 in the small
village of Smiljan, Croatia
(then part of the Austrian-
Hungarian Empire).
• Tesla's patents and
theoretical work formed the
basis of modern alternating
current (AC) electric power
systems.
• A memorial center „Nikola
Tesla“ in Smiljan, near the
town of Gospic in the Lika
region, is about 100 km far
from the NP Krka.

5. WHEN WAS IT BUILT?
 The Hydroelectric power
plant Krka was built in1895.
Its power was not so great
but it was enough for the
needs of the time.
 The Krka was originally
designed to power the 340
street lights in the city of
Šibenik.
 Šibenik is now known as the
first city in the world whose
street lights were powered
by a polyphasic system of
alternating current, long
before many European
cities, including Vienna,
Budapest, Rome, London
and others.

6.  The transmission line from the power plant to the city
of Šibenik was on wooden towers, 11 km long.
 Soon after the current originating from Krka was used
to power mills, oil and pasta factories, theatres, cafés,
restaurants, and several private households.

7. Historical IMPORTANCE
• Due to the historical
significance, the
former Hydroelectric
plant Krka is now
protected as a
monument of
industrial
architecture.
• Restoration works are
currently in place,
aimed at conservation
and presentation of
the plant.
