It is an old basket made of
wattle and we chose it as our
Cultural Heritage Kit because it
is hand made and it has a
history of its own.
3. Inside we put many
interesting, important
and historical objects
and we will tell you the
story about how and
why each one of them
was chosen for our
Cultral Heritage Kit.
4. St. James’ Cathedral in
Šibenik
One of the most famous
architecture achievement of the
15th and 16th century. The
cathedral is on UNESCO
Heritage List from November
2000. It is built entirely from
stone, with no binding material,
and using unique constructions
tehniques developed by
architects Georgius Dalmatinus
and Niccolo Fiorentino.
5. SCULPTED HEADS ON ST
JAMES’ CATHEDRAL
The outside of St
James’ Cathedral is
decorated with 72
sculpted heads.
The legends says that
the architect took
only anonymous
people as his models.
6. St.Michael's fortress
St.Michael's fortress was
built in 13th century as a
part of city's fortification
system to deffend the
town from Turkish
invasion. In 14th century
it was a barracks storage
and demolished
accidentaly,but it was
restored. Today it has
been renovated and used
as the most spectacular
open-air concert hall.
7. ŠIBENIK BUTTONS
The Šibenik button was originally a part of
the traditional costume worn by men in the
region. Today, it is a fashionable motive in
jewelry-making, used to make earrings,
necklaces, rings, bracelets, an so on.
In 2007, the Croatian National Tourist
Board declared the Šibenik button the
most original Croatian souvenir.
8. ‘’NATIKAČI’’
(decorative socks)
A part of traditional folk costume
in Ravni Kotari.
These detailed ornaments were
handmade by local women there.
9. PRIMOŠTEN’S LACE
Lacemaking in is a tradition dating
back to the Renaissance Throughout
the years, Croatian lace has become
notable for its unique patterns and
designs.
In 2009 UNESCO recognised it as an
Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity.
10. LICITAR HEARTS
Licitar hearts are an
interesting part of the
old Croatian heritage.
Traditionally, they were
used by young men to
express their feelings
towards some lucky girl
on a Valentine's day.
These little red hearts
would represent a
special sign of devotion
and attention. They are
colorfully decorated
biscuits made of sweet
honey dough.
11. A CRAVAT
Popular piece of men or women
clothing, worn as a decorative
ribbon around a neck.
It was first invented by Croats
who started wearing it in the
16th century as a part of their
military uniform.
12. BUNJA
The name for common
buildings on Dalmatian
islands.
In the past they were used
as shelter from the rain but
also as a place to keep
their tools. Bunje are
examples of dry wall
construction, which is one
of Croatian heritage
traditions
13. TRADITIONAL CORAL
JEWELERY
Coral diving is the most
recognizable cultural heritage
and a centuries-old
distinctiveness of the island of
Zlarin (an island in Šibenik’s
archipelago).
The history of the coral trade
in Croatia goes back to the
13th century.
Different jewelery items are
made from it.
14. AMPHORA
A type of container of a
characteristic shape and
size, descending from
the Neolithic Period and
was widely used in
Croatia as well. People
storaged various
products in them, both
liquid and dry, but
mostly wine and oil.
