3. History of Cenrtal Park
▪ the first landscaped public park in the United States.

needed a comparable facility to establish its international reputation.

• Bethesda Terrace
-heart of Central Park.
-envisioned a sweeping Promenade
(the Mall) that led to a grand terrace
overlooking the Lake.
-The magnificent carvings represent the
four seasons and, on the side facing the
Mall, the times of day.
Today, Central Park Conservancy employs a sculptor to care for the
sandstone carvings and sculpture and a zone gardener and their
crew to take care of the landscapes. In the summer, aquatic
plantings such as water lilies and lotus are placed in the fountain,

-most photographed and filmed locations in
Central Park.
-built of cast iron instead of stone, which was
used for almost all of the other archways in
the park.
The Carousel
-most popular attraction with the pre-teen set is the
historic Carousel.

6. Belvedere Castle

Lawn, once one of the Park’s original
reservoirs and, directly below, Turtle
Pond.
7. Wollman Rink
-built in 1949 and has been a success from the
day it opened
-easily one of the most picturesque activities to
be enjoyed on a winter’ s night.
-In the spring and summer the rink becomes
home to the Victorian Gardens amusement park
-a beautiful evocation of a quaint country
carnival with rides and attractions for the whole
family.
8. Conservatory Water
-delight for participants and observers; whether adults, children or, in one case,
a rather notable rodent.
-to the fun are the nearby statues of Alice in Wonderland and Hans Christian
Andersen, two of the most popular pieces of sculpture in the park.
-patina created by the many tiny hands that have run across the surfaces of both
figures.
9. Conservatory Garden
-filled with a myriad of plant life, from
carefully cultivated heirloom roses to the
most common of indigenous flowers,
while portions of the grounds are
delineated by hedges of English yew,
barberry, Korean holly and the
serendipitously named “Manhattan.”

13. Central Park Reservoir
-most valuable waterfront real estate on
the planet, the Central Park Reservoir is
located between 86th and 96th Sts.

disconnected as an active component
since the new water tunnel was opened in
1991.
-a very public debate as several different
plans are considered for its future
- include fishing piers, a marina, ball
fields, restaurants and beaches
14. Alice in Wonderland (Margaret Delacorte Memorial) - New
York, New York
created by the Spanish-born American
sculptor José de Creeft.
15. 107th Infantry Memorial
many people speculated that the lead soldier was modeled after boxer Gene
Tunney, but "officers of the regiment denied this, saying the sculptor merely
had striven to emphasize the characteristic expression of the typical soldier in
action“ and the sculptor said the figure was based on advertising executive
Paul Cornell.
17. Descriptions of activities / recreational activities
• Throughout the year you can take a guided tour of
the park in a horse-drawn carriage, pedicab tour or
on a bike tour, or if you're feeling independent you
can rent a bike and tour around on your own.
• For families, there are plenty of
things to do with kids and over
20 children's playgrounds.
18. There are also a myriad of sports such as baseball, tennis and running that can be
played in Central Park anytime.
19. SPRING & SUMMER
• During the warmer months there are concerts presented by
SummerStage, Good Morning America, The New York Philharmonic
and others featuring a wide variety of genres for all music-lovers.
20. • Seasonal plays and events like Shakespeare in the Park and the Central Park
Film Festival are much-anticipated annual activities.
21. • Take a relaxing yoga class on the grass or have a have a picnic with some
friends.
22. FALL & WINTER
• During the colder months, many people like to go ice skating at Wollman or
Lasker Rink.

Walking Tours.
Visitors can observe the various unique
species of trees in the park in their full glory,
such as the Red Maple, Bald Cypress,
Gingko, American Elm, European Beeches,
London Plane and many more.
• Sledding
When the snowflakes start to fall there's
no better place to enjoy a fun-filled day
of sledding and other winter festivities
in the city than Central Park.
24. Swedish Cottage Marionette
Theater
-Marionette puppet shows are a unique
year-round offering in Central Park and
a great indoor activity for kids and
families.
- actually imported from Sweden in
1877, 2 years after it was built. It has
served as the headquarters for the Civil
Defense during World War II, and it
was also formerly a tool house, a
library, and Central Park's
entomological laboratory.
