This document provides installation instructions for heatshrink outdoor armour earthing kits for 3 core PILC or XLPE armoured cables between 7.2-33kV. The instructions include 10 steps: 1) prepare the cable, 2) position clamps before bending back armours, 3) open armours and add support ring, 4) continue main termination, 5) bend back armours, 6) secure with clamps, 7) add mastic tape, 8) cover sharp edges with tape, 9) abrade and clean cable, 10) apply and shrink heatshrink tube. Notes provide additional details for lead sheathed or tape armoured cables.

1. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION

PILC OR XLPE ARMOURED CABLES 7.2 TO 33kV
4. Continue to install the termination in
accordance to the main termination
instruction.
Note:- If the cable has a lead sheath, the
earth braid should be connected to the lead
sheath using a constant force spring, prior
to fitting the 3 leg boot (Fig 2).

1.Prepare the cable to the required length
whilst referring to the main termination
instruction sheet.
2. Ensure the outer shrink tube and worm
drive clamps are in position, prior to bending
back the armours
3. Open up the armours as shown in Fig 2. and
position the armour support ring.
Note:- If the cable is tape armoured the
support ring is not required.

2. 9. Abrade approx 50mm of cable sheath. Using
the cleaning tissues provided, de-grease the
area.
10. Position the shrink tube so that it overlaps
both the cable sheath and 3 leg boot. With a
suitable heat source and starting from the top of
the tube, shrink in place. Keep the flame moving
around the sleeve to ensure an even smooth
recovery.
Once fully shrunk sealant will be visible at the
ends.
Note: if this kit is used for indoor terminations,
the earth gland may already have bonded the
armours and the kit can just be used to earth the
lead sheath. Only the roll spring is used to bond
the earth braid/s to the lead sheath.
5. Bend the armours back over the
support ring body.
6. Using the worm drive clamps, secure
the armours, screen braids and the main
earth braid/s as shown in Fig 3. Ensure the
clamps are tight.
7. Apply a band of black mastic tape under
and over the main earth braid/s, as
shown.
8. Cover any sharp edges and the clamp
buckles with PVC tape.
Note: If earth braids are supplied,
position the solder blocks upon the black
mastic tape and apply a further turn over
this point as shown in Fig 3.
