• Three Laws of Robotics

• Founder
Robots:
• A robot is a machine designed to execute one or more
tasks automatically with speed and precision. There are
as many different types of robots as there are tasks for
them to perform.
• A robot is just a computer that can perform a series of
complex tasks automatically.
• Robots use a central computer to process information, as
well as input and output devices to react and to carry out
tasks.
• You may have robots in your home right now.
Robotics:
• Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch
of engineering and science that includes mechanical
engineering, electrical engineering, computer science,
and others. Robotics deals with the design, construction,
operation, and use of robots, as well as computer
systems for their control, sensory feedback,
and information processing.
First use of the word”Robotics”
• The word robot was introduced to the public by Czech
writer Karel Capek(1890-1938) in his play R.U.R.
(Rossum's Universal Robots), published in 1920. The
play begins in a factory that makes artificial people called
robots . Capek was reportedly several times a candidate
for the Nobel prize for his works .
• The word "robotics", used to describe this field of study,
was coined accidentally by the Russian –born, American
scientist and science fiction writer, Isaac Asimov(1920-
1992) in 1940s.
Isaac Asimov's "Three Laws of
Robotics"
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through
inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings
except where such orders would conflict with the
First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as
such protection does not conflict with the First or
Second Law.
Types of Robots:
• Stationary Robots
• Wheeled Robots
• Nano Robots
• Micro Robots
• Modular Robots
• Humanoid Robots
• A humanoid robot is a robot with its overall appearance
based on that of the human body.
• In general humanoid robots have a torso with a head, two
arms and two legs, although some forms of humanoid
robots may model only part of the body, for example,
from the waist up.
• Some humanoid robots may also have a 'face', with 'eyes'
and 'mouth'.
• Androids are humanoid robots built to resemble a male
human, and Gynoids are humanoid robots built to
resemble a human female.
Humanoid Robots:
Types of Robot Sensors:
• Light sensors. A Light sensor is used to detect light and create a
voltage difference. ...
• Sound Sensor. ...
• Temperature Sensor. ...
• Contact Sensor. ...
• Proximity Sensor.(Infrared (IR) Transceivers, Ultrasonic Sensor,
Photoresistor)
• Distance Sensor. ...
• Pressure Sensors. ...
• Tilt Sensors
Types of Robot Sensors:
• Navigation / Positioning Sensors(GPS (Global Positioning
System), Digital Magnetic Compass, Localization)
• Acceleration Sensor(Static Force, Dynamic force)
• Gyroscope
• Voltage Sensors
• Current Sensors
• Tactile Sensors(Touch Sensor, and Force Sensor)
Zigbee Protocols:
• It is a device which transmits and receives
digital signals
• It is comprised of a transmitter module and receiver
module
• It acts as a transmission media between human and robot
• Main advantage is that it is a wireless communication
Gesture Identification:
• The robot understands digital voltage signals only
• There should be a compiler between human movements
and robot’s movements
• There comes the Accelerometer
Accelerometer:
• Produces signals according to the movements
• The signals are produced based on the variations
on x-y-z variations
• Types-digital and analog
• Sampling/resolutions is adjustable so that we can
adjust our robot sensitivity by adjusting sampling
rate
• A small module so that we can fix it anywhere in
the body
Founder
• Hanson Robotics is led by Dr. David Hanson, Founder and CEO,
with the support of a world-class team of roboticists, AI experts,
scientists, technologists, hardware/software engineers, and
cognitive specialists.
• “I quest to realize Genius Machines—machines with greater than
human intelligence, creativity, wisdom, and compassion. To this
end, I conduct research in robotics, artificial intelligence, the arts,
cognitive science, product design and deployment, and integrate
these efforts in the pursuit of novel human robot relations…”
• – Dr. David Hanson, Founder and CEO
Hanson Robotics was founded in 2005, and its first robot
was Albert Einstein HUBO. It was the famous physicist's
head attached to a fully-upright HUBO robot body
• In November 2005, Hanson Robotics founder David Hanson
unveiled his creation at the APEC Summit in Seoul, Korea. The
project was a collaboration between Hanson's company and
the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
• "The robot is the world's first android head mounted on a life-size
walking robotic frame,"
At the 2006 Wired Nextfest, Hanson Robotics
unveiled its next humanoid, Jules
• "Jules is an amazingly life like robot, something of a 'complete
package' with a combination of interesting features, "Even more
than 10 years ago, the robot featured machine learning capabilities
that enabled it to chat with humans with relative fluency. The robot
also uses face tracking and facial recognition to generate emotions
that are in line with conversational clues.
• A computer in the robot's head tracks people's eyes so that the head
moves as humans move around the room.
In 2007, the company's founder, David Hanson,
produced a 17-inch-tall robot called Zeno, named
after Hanson's son.
• According to the company website, the 4.5-pound humanoid was
unveiled at the 2007 Wired Nextfest, where it "was described as an
intelligent 'conversational robot' that will ultimately be part of
Hanson's 'Roboting' line of personal, interactive bots."
• In the 10 years since, Hanson, a former Disney Imaginer, has
released more sophisticated robots with human proportions.
Meet the first-ever robot citizen — a
humanoid named Sophia
• Sophia the robot might not have a heart or brain, but it does
have Saudi Arabian citizenship.
• As of October 25, Sophia is the first robot in history to be a full
citizen of a country.
• Sophia was developed by Hanson Robotics, led by AI developer
David Hanson. It spoke at this year's Future Investment Initiative,
held in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.
