What is psychology ??
• Psyche and science = Psychology
• Psychology is a broad field that encompasses the study of human
thought
• Science of mental and behavior process
• An academic discipline which involves the scientific study of mental
faculties, functions and behaviours
What is Humanistic Perspective
• The humanistic perspective is an approach to psychology that
emphasizes empathy and stresses the good in human behavior
• Humanistic psychologists look at human behavior not only through
the eyes of the observer, but through the eyes of the person doing
the behaving
• In counseling and therapy, this approach allows an psychologist to
focus on ways to help improve an individual's self-image or self-
actualization
History of Humanistic Perspective
• Humanistic psychology emerged during the middle half of the
twentieth century in direct response to psychoanalysis and
behaviorism
• Developed by Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers and Viktor Frankl
• The major contribution of human perspective to psychology is the
development of variety of psychotherapeutic techniques
(Barton,1992)
