This document contains a form for students to complete before meeting with their instructor for a BACC appointment. It requests information about the student's academic status, majors/minors, GPA, expected graduation date, courses taken, research/teaching experience, graduate school interests, and GRE scores. Tips are provided on raising GPAs, useful minors, taking graduate courses before applying to grad school, becoming a teaching/research assistant, practicum opportunities, the honors college, and tips for applying to graduate school.

For most graduate schools in psychology, you will need a minimum GPA of 3.0, with at least a preferred GPA of at least 3.5. If
you think you need help raising your GPA, check out our Self-Management course (PSY 3621). This one credit course helps

Minors: We recommend taking useful minors for graduate school such as practical writing, math, or biology, for example. If you
are looking to pursue behavior analysis in graduate school, some minors that may not be useful include sociology, social
psychology, or criminal justice.

Permission to Take Graduate Courses – Taking graduate classes after graduating from undergrad without being admitted to a
graduate program yet. Could be taken during a semester or year off while waiting to apply (or reapply) to graduate school. Apply
for “Non-degree status”. See form in the BACC Pack. You can apply to BATS or other programs even if you are not going to
graduate until the end of the summer.

PSY 3550 is the Teaching Assistant course. To be considered, contact professors you might be interested in working with early
and fill out any necessary applications. Once you have been accepted, stop by the Undergraduate Advising office to fill out an
enrollment form. This course can count towards practicum credits. See “Becoming a TA or Research Assistant” in the BACC
Pack.
PSY 4990 is the Research Assistant course, or you may be able to volunteer in a lab. Again, try to contact professors you would
be interested in working with early. There may also be postings on bulletin boards around Wood Hall. Applications for PSY
4990 with Dr. Malott are done through our Behavioral Research/Supervisory System (BRSS).
BRSS Options include: Thesis (2 semesters, 6 credits) or Non-thesis (1 semester, 3 credits) See “Becoming a TA or Research

There are also many other excellent behavioral programs that can be found by going to the ABAI and BACB websites, or by
looking through “ABA and BACB Accredited Programs” in the BACC Pack. WMU’s Psychology Department is behaviorally
based, but if you are interested in another area of psychology, “Areas of Interest in Psychology” in the BACC Pack lists the
many different fields. To find out where to start in your search for graduate schools, ask your professors, look up the professors
whose research you are interested in, and/or visit gradschools.com. Please note that the graduate program in counseling at
WMU is in the College of Education and Human Development.
Note: If Behavioral is your second choice after Clinical, you should still apply because clinical programs only accept a
few students a year. BATS typically accepts about 15 masters students and 1 PhD every year

The Lee Honors College will allow you to be enrolled in smaller classes, build relationships with professors, and write an honors
thesis. At the end of each Fall and Spring semester, the Lee Honors College invites current WMU students to join. These are
students who have maintained a GPA of at least 3.5 or better for two consecutive semesters and will be enrolled for at least three
