Choosing The Right Question Types
• When administrators use an online exam maker to construct a test, one of
the challenges they face is deciding which type of questions to include.
• Different items are better suited to different assessment topics.
– For example, a personality test will often use the one to five scale to
rate the test taker’s relationship to different statements.
• True/false questions are proven to be particularly effective for tests that
focus on specialized knowledge.
• Administrators must be aware of the pros and cons of true/false testing,
and how to most effectively construct these items for reliable results.

What Are You Testing?
• True/false questions are efficient for testing misconceptions and any
specialized knowledge which could be obviously categorized as
correct or incorrect.
• True/false tests, which can be created using exam software, are
beneficial for all ages, as questions are often easy to understand.
– This makes these items especially popular for school children, and their
simple scoring scheme beneficial for teachers.
• True/false sections may also be included as a portion of a longer
exam in any industry, as a time-efficient way to test knowledge
retention.

How To Construct an Effective True/False
Questions
• There exist certain traps pertaining to true/false questions which a
test writer should be aware of, so as to not invalidate results.
– Items should test specialized knowledge rather than broad general
topics in order to effectively rate the test taker’s level of understanding
or expertise.
– It’s important to ensure that the true/false item contains only one
idea, so test takers are not confused as to how they should respond.
– If administrators create a test with a question claiming to be a true
statement, they must be absolutely certain that it is indeed true, to
avoid discrediting their assessment.
– Any ambiguous words like “could” or “may” should not be used in a
true/false question, as they muddy the reliability of results.

Limitations of True/False Testing
• Although true/false tests have the potential to yield objective results,
the simplicity of the test structure does raise some concerns.
– True/false questions are highly subject to guessing. Test takers have a
50/50 chance of passing the test, without ever knowing the correct
answers.
• The best way to enhance reliability is to use online exam
software that allows administrators to incorporate a broad range of
item types into each test.
• By mixing true/false questions with others like fill-in-the-blanks,
scorers will obtain an effectively nuanced picture of their test takers’
knowledge.
