B-17 Memphis Belle was NOT the first bomber to complete 25 missions in Europe in WWII! B-24 HOT STUFF was the first, but crashed in Iceland on the way back to the States. This newsletter documents the attempt to build a monument to the crew of HOT STUFF in Iceland.

He did an incredible job!

HOT STUFF/GEN. ANDREWS
Newsletter #13
February 2016
HOT STUFF LIVES!
Sculptor Terry Hinde created a spectacular stainless
steel model of Hot Stuff in amazing detail.
Hot Stuff lives because Terry incorporated a piece of
stainless steel from one of Hot Stuff’s turbo chargers,
recovered from the crash site in Iceland, and welded it
into the model. The part number identifying the piece
from Hot Stuff’s turbo is visible on the tail section of the
model.
2. Sculptor Terry Hinde the
Perfectionist
Terry Hinde, the sculptor of the
Hot Stuff model, is not only an
outstanding sculptor, he is a per-
fectionist. Jim told him it proba-
bly wouldn’t be necessary to put
propellers on Hot Stuff but Terry
would have none of that. It had to
be perfect! He also came up with
the idea of having the propellers
spring loaded so that, if someone
reached up and tried to pull down
on a blade a spring would allow
the propeller to turn.
It’s difficult to believe the model
was built entirely by hand. Terry
used a 1/48 scale plastic model of
a B-24D to work from and scaled
it up to a stainless steel B-24D
with an 8 foot wingspan.
Icelandair to transport the
Stainless Steel model of
Hot Stuff to Iceland!
The problem of getting the stain-
less steel model of Hot Stuff has
been solved.
Oli Marteinsson, a retired Icelan-
dair executive, has arranged for
Icelandair to transport the model
from Colorado to Iceland.
Icelandair has been a supporter
of the Hot Stuff/Gen. Andrews
Memorial Monument Project
from the beginning. The compa-
ny transported pieces of Hot Stuff
wreckage recovered by Oli, his
brother Doddi and Jim to Jim’s
home in Austin, Texas. Many of
the pieces are on display, or soon
will be, at the Veterans Muse-
um and Memorial Center in San
Diego, CA, the Strategic Air &
Space Museum near Omaha, NE,
93rd Bombardment Group
Association Award
Jim Lux was surprised and hon-
ored to receive an award from
the 93rd BG Assoc. last October
for his work on the Hot Stuff/
Gen. Andrews Memorial Monu-
ment Project. The award was an-
nounced by President Jim Root.
Jim was truly honored to receive
a beautiful crystal trophy handed
to him by Fernley Smith. Fern-
ley is an original member of the
93rd BG. He was the pilot of a
B-24 Liberator and flew combat
mission in Europe during World
War II at the age of 18!
and the National Museum of the
United States Air Force in Day-
ton, OH. Jim continues to work
on placing pieces for display in
other prominent airplane muse-
ums throughout the country.
Hot Stuff model to be
displayed at Keflavik
International Airport
Thanks to Fridthor Eydal of Isav-
ia Ltd., the Hot Stuff model will
be put on display in the lobby at
Keflavik International Airport.
It will be an obvious attraction
and hopefully encourage those
who see it to donate to the monu-
ment project.

More than 5 million people a year travel through KIA.
KIA was Meeks Field, an American base during World War II. Meeks Field was
one of the airfields where Hot Stuff tried to land but couldn’t because of poor
visibility.
