SDSU offers high performance computing resources through its University Networking and Research Computing Group, including a 70+ node Linux cluster called "BigJack". The cluster provides computing power for research applications in areas like bioinformatics. Storage solutions and data transfer services are also available. Support staff can help researchers with tasks like application installation, algorithm optimization, and developing data management plans required for funding applications.

ABOUT SDSU RESEARCH COMPUTING
SD State University offers support for research computing
through the University Networking and Research Computing
Group, part of the Division of Technology and Security. A key
central resource managed by this group is a 70+ node Linux
compute cluster, as well as several individual shared-use Linux
servers, located in the SDSU Data Center on the first floor of the
Morrill Admin Building. UNRC provides purchase configuration
consultation and co-hosting services in the data center.
Research data storage solutions and consulting are available,
as well as consultation and/or collaboration on grant proposals
with significant computational need.
HPC SERVICES
SDSU'S LINUX CLUSTER "BIGJACK"
UNRC maintains an IBM iDataPlex Linux cluster with 70+
nodes for general research computing use for SDSU
researchers. Open-source computational applications and
frameworks such as R, Python, C/C++ code with MPI, etc., as
well as several bioinformatics applications have been
deployed on the cluster. SDSU also holds a campus site
license for MATLAB. UNRC support staff including domain
specialists who can assist in training faculty or students in use
of the cluster, and to install new applications or optimize
existing programs or workflows.
DATA STORAGE SERVICES
Storage solutions are available to enable researchers to
securely store and share data in a collaborative environment.
Faculty can purchase multiple terabytes of space, as needed,
and can utilize Globus Online, a fast and powerful file transfer
service, for moving large files to and from the HPC systems.

Value-added services include identifying and helping
assemble the full scope of research-computing service
requirements, algorithm optimization, grant writing, and
data-management administration. Individualized
assistance also is available.
Many funding agencies require detailed data
management and sharing plans during the application
review process. Consultation on these services, as well as
on research system design, visualization and graphics
processing, is available for researchers preparing for the
funding application process.
SUPPORT STAFF:
Data visualization is transforming how research findings
are analyzed and communicated, and provides a powerful
new way to gain a better understanding of the complexity
of ideas and data through simulations, models, maps and
infographics. The Research Computing team offers
consultation on visualization and graphics processing.
