I go to church on Saturday and while I am not out with my age group every week, I m with a people

Abstract
This purpose of this is to describe Kohlberg s theory of morality in detail; I will describe each level
that pertains to this theory and how they have affected me personally. Lawrence Kohlberg theory of
moral development is divided into three different levels; the first level is the preconventional level
followed by the conventional level, and then the postconventonal level. Within each of these levels,
each level contains two different stages, resulting in six stages in all. Kohlberg s was influenced by
Jean Piaget s theory, his theory focused on cognitive development, but he was motivated Piaget s
theory that described how a child develops moral understanding. It encouraged Kohlberg to research
deeper and develop his theory of moral development more in depth. For Kohlberg s research, he
decided to use the interviewing technique using moral dilemmas. Kohlberg used several different
techniques for his research strategies, but he had one famous dilemma, known as the Heinz dilemma ,
also defined as, pits the value of obeying the law (not stealing) against the value of human life (saving
a dying person) (Berk, 2014 pg. 323).

The Youth And Their Risks
If you take no risks, you will suffer no defeats. But if you take no risks, you win no victories. (Richard
M. Nixon). In his investigative biography, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer, expresses that even though
young people can be ignorant and take treacherous risks, these can be used as knowledge enhancers
and can be life changers. Krakauer gives us insight by giving examples of what risk really are, how
people take them, and how it actually affects those people. Throughout the whole book, there are
instances where Krakauer uses real life examples of things that have happened where people have
taken risks and the outcomes of that. In general, one has to take risks in life to truly find oneself and
Krakauer says It can be argued that youthful derring do is in fact evolutionarily adaptive, a behavior
encoded in our genes (182). Krakauer explains that for teenagers the idea of doing outrageous things
comes easily to them because it s only natural for them. Krakauer explains that for teenagers, doing
crazy things is due to the fact that adventure lives in their blood and this has been going on for many
centuries. For a teenager death and injury seems like a joke, they don t even consider these, the
absence of fear of death makes them feel invincible and causing them to take so many risks. There are

Gogol as the Perfect Namesake In Jhumpa Lahiri s novel The Namesake, Indian parents bestow a
Russian name to their first born baby boy; the name is Gogol Ganguli which is after the famous
Russian writer, Nikolai V. Gogol. In Lahiri s novel, the main character fights an identity crisis because
of his highly unusual name. Gogol carries uncertainty about himself throughout the novel because of
his name, He hates his name . . . that is has nothing to do with who he is, that it is neither Indian nor
American but of all things Russian (Lahiri 76). He constantly thinks the name Gogol does not

In the short story, Akaky s mother names him after his father because to give him any other name was
out of the question, (Gogol178). Also, his father is the one who gives Akaky life. And in the novel,
Ashoke gives Gogol his namesake because the short story of The Overcoat allows him a chance to
live, become a father, and give life to his son; the similar concepts of having a difficult time naming
the child and giving the child the name that gives him life, ties the characters of Akaky and Gogol
closely together; and re iterates that Gogol is the perfect namesake for Lahiri s character based upon
Nikolai Gogol s character in The Overcoat. Another aspect of Akaky that further identifies Gogol as
an ideal name for Lahiri s protagonist derives from one simple fact: each of the main characters
changed their names or persona in order to escape their contradictory names. For instance, in the novel
The Namesake, Gogol s identity crisis consumes him to the point where he creates a new name for
himself, He wonders if this is how it feels for an obese person to become thin, for a prisoner to walk

However, the name change in The Namesake is not the significant point that brings Gogol and Akaky
together like identical twins; it is the attitude each character displays once they form a new identity.
