Heat Fracture on Rocks
Background
Heat fracture is when an increase in volume is observed, due to an increase in temperature. Simply
meaning that while a material is being heated, the rise in temperature causes it to take up more space.
Heat fracture doesn t only deal with high temperatures, it also deals with the effects of cooling on a
material. If cooling occurs then the opposite of expansion occurs as well, the material will begin to
shrink or decrease in size. Continuous heating and cooling will eventually lead to stress and that
makes the material break or fracture. When the material going through this type of weathering is
considered being fractured, it means it s dealing with cracking or breaking of the ... Show more

It was believed that if the amount of time that the rock went through heating and cooling increased,
then the weight of the rock would decrease because while the rock goes through more heating and
cooling eventually it will fracture causing the weight to decrease. This is called heat fracture. The data
gathered did prove the hypothesis to be correct. For the longer trials with more minutes, the rock s
weight did decrease more rather than the shorter amount of trials. For example, the one minute trial
barely had a 0.6g difference proving our hypothesis correct, while the 15 minute trial had a significant
change in the rock s weight due to the longer time experiment. The graph seemed to gradually increase
according to the longer trials. The only outlier was the last trial because it had such a small change
compared to the other trials, although all trials did support the original

Decline Of Nuclear Families In The 20th Century
An interesting and complex modern departure from a societel norm is acting as the downfall of what is
referred to as the nuclear family. The nuclear family of a husband and wife with dependant children,
or a basic communal unit, acted as a catalyst of growth and societal stability in the United States for
quite some time. The late 20th century appeared to experience a decline in married couples. With
multifaceted forces at play, that nuclear family appears to have been destabilized by three important
societal factors: a unique shift in cultural values, difficult economical environments and conditions,
and ever changing statistics in population. The decline in the number of married couples and nuclear
families in the late 20th century ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

way that resulted in ... millions of baby boomers looking for husbands discovered that they were a few

men. (Cohen, 271) This delay in marriage for the future generation can simply and mathematically
explain the decline in marriage in the late 20th century. To make matters worse, the shift in industrial
jobs around large urban centers in the 1970s and 1980s resulted in a lowering of marriage rates among
lower income and african american women; where men without steady employment or income
potential found themselves shut out of the marriage market . (Cohen, 271). Obviously, these issues led
to lower marriage prospects for females of that

Comparing Gobi-28 And Thank You For Saying
Difficult poem according to Charles Berstein is something which is recently really
popular, it s hard to appreciate. This poem makes you feel stupid either you are the author or the
reader of it. At the same time, it catches your imagination and affects you somehow. First poem
that came to my mind was Gobi 28 by Lui Aragon. The main feature of this poem that
frightens future readers is that it was written by surrealistic author. According to the strange
composition of the poem and almost terrible and revolting images, it makes Gobi 28 not the
kind of best sellers. However, if you cope with the first shock and go further, you understand
that it has something in it. It s not about the words, but about something which is between the ... Show

It s mostly about your personal feelings that it appeals to. And then I decided to compare
my example of the difficult poem with the poem which is Bernstein himself considers to be
difficult.
I was quite surprised and felt like I didn t get something right. Thank You for Saying
Thank You by Charles Bernstein seemed to be not very difficult. It has comprehensive words
and composition, so it s easy to read. This poem knows everything about itself and shares it with
the reader. At some point, I stopped to think about Thank You for Saying Thanks You in a
serious way and looked at this poem as a pure irony. And I got it! It speaks about serious things
in poetry in a not serious manner. And as I had to spend time and think about this poem longer to
understand it, it is difficult.
I decided to look at the main features of the difficult poem one more time and find any
poem which is not difficult. And then I recognized that it was the basic description of every
poem in the World. Poetry itself is difficult and that what makes it poetry. Charles Bernstein was
made a joke of it. After all, if you find a poem to be difficult and refuse to read it, there

Crisis In Flint
In a contemporary light, the crisis in Flint is viewed as one of the most abhorrent violations of the
right to clean water. But in our initial reactions of shock and awe, we must ask one fundamental
question: Is this crisis the beginning of a national catastrophe? To answer this question, we don t have
to look far. Last week, the Ithaca City School District shut off their water supply after the detection of
high levels of lead. In Newark, New Jersey, 17,000 children are now being tested for lead poisoning.
In Long Island, New York, dilapidated cesspools leaking nitrogen have led to a mass die off of flora
and fauna within the Long Island Sound. These incidents represent a fraction of the growing disaster
that is our nation s water infrastructure. Experts on urban water infrastructure have characterized water
mains as ticking time bombs. Their characterizations are justified for the most part many aging water
mains have pipes made from wooden planks wrapped in metal coil. From 2004 to 2009, 316
contaminants were detected in water supplied to the public. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Altruism Over Incentives For Organ Donation Essay
Altruism Over Incentives for Organ Donation
Over the years, organ donation challenges and demands increased inversely in proportion to the organ
shortages. The primary mission of donor s organizations is to save as many terminally ill recipients at
the end stages of their lives as possible with an end goal of giving these recipients a normal a life span.
The significance of organ donation is to restore an ailing person s quality of life. The ongoing issue of
organ shortages may be a symptom of the current program that present an idealistic portrait of how
these issues may be resolved. As a result, the mission and ultimate goal of organizations such as
UNOS and Donate Life America, among others, is to obtain viable organs for their patients and to
promote; education, empower altruism and establish quality ethics, and act as a resource for existing
and potential donors.
Organ donations can be controversial in the minds of potential organ donors due to inhumane activity,
dehumanizing processes, or even the circulation of illegal revenue. Conceptual changes need to be
made consistent with altruism in order to produce the desired outcome of increasing the availability of
desperately needed organs and tissues. Groups such as the mentioned above can act as a resource and
clearinghouse mainly focusing on patient s needs. Organdonor.gov is ran by the Federal Health
Resources Services Administration and can act as ballast providing information geared toward donors

years ago, Dennis was a victim to his malicious allergies. Exposure to outdoor activities were difficult
for him as he constantly had extreme reactions. At that time, we decided that Dennis would have to
combat his allergies rather than temporarily subside them through medicine. Then, we found a soccer
team. At first, Dennis seemed curious and ready to play, but the team he played for was unstable and
new with a constant losing streak. With his allergies only getting worse, he faced the decision of
quitting. However, friends and family prevented him from taking the easy way out. Now he has been

The Industrial Revolution of Great Britain
The Industrial Revolution of Great Britain
The Industrial Revolution was a period from the 18th to the 19th century where major changes in
agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transport, and technology had a tremendous effect on the social
economic and cultural conditions starting in the Great Britain, then subsequently spreading throughout
Europe, North America, and eventually the world. Reasons The Industrial Revolution, one of the most
vital periods of change in Great Britain, occurred because of the stable economic, social, and political
stance of the country, as well as brought lasting effects in Britain in each of these areas. With its fast

Process The First Industrial Revolution began in the textile industry and was marked by a series of
inventions. They were the Spinning Jenny, the water frame, the power loom and the steam engine.
These inventions completed the mechanization of the textile industry and prepared the way for a new
system of production: large scale industry. With these developments came a need for a cheap means of
transportation. To meet it, entrepreneurs invested in digging canals to ship goods to market. In 1814,
the steam locomotive was invented. The first railway was completed in 1825. By 1850, Great Britain
had established a railroad system encompassing over 10,000 kilometers of track. Meanwhile, it had
also built a large merchant fleet, which carried British manufactured goods to all parts of the world.
By the middle of the 19th century, The Industrial Revolution was accomplished in Great Britain. The
First Industrial Revolution had forever changed Great Britain, and later the world. After 1871,
however, Europe was experiencing tremendous material growth produced by the Second Industrial
Revolution, also known as the Technological Revolution. The Second Industrial Revolution gave rise
to new inventions and products, markets and larger factories, and a new leader in the competitive
industry. In this period, Great Britain

How Is Lucy Presented In To Kill A Mockingbird
A response to Guilt
John Maxwell Coetzee s novel showed that Lucy s rape was not a gendered crime, instead, was
considered a race and/or class crime. David Lurie and Lucie Lurie represent South Africa s white
minority, that being so, what happened to her represents the punishment to South Africa s white
community (this can be well corroborate in the text), and Lucie s decision to not report the rape and
remain on the farm represents one of the many novel s reposes to guilt.
The farm attack and the rape of Lucy is the most influential scene in the whole book. Everything was
marked up by one specific event. Wyk M. Smith, from Rhodes University, Institute for the Study of
English in Africa, points out that the central sequence of the novel, ... Show more content on

Clive Barnett, from University of Reading, Department of Geography, emphasizes that Coetzee s
fiction has been inserted into dominant moral representations of apartheid (300). Where, everything on
this novel can be related to apartheid South Africa. The white professor, and his daughter represents
the disgrace and shame of whites. What happened to them, the attack and Lucy s rape, represents the
punishment to the white community for the crimes they have committed against the black community.
Also, Lucy s reaction to the event was to not press charges against the rapists, This is my life. I am the
one who has to live here. What happened to me is my business, mine alone, not yours, and if there is
one right I have it is the right not to be put on trial (Disgrace 133), and stay in her house and face the
consequences. Moreover, Lucy thought that was the price to pay in order for her to stay there, and J.
M. Coetzee quoted in Disgrace:
[S]he broods a long while before she answers. But isn t there another way of looking at it, David?
What if... what if that is the price one has to pay for staying on? Perhaps that is how they look at it;
perhaps that is how I should look at it too. They see me as owning something. They see themselves as
debt collectors, tax collectors. Why should I be allowed to live here

Comparing Plutarch And Suetonius

A great way to look at the writing styles of two separate biographers is to see how they present the life
of the same person. In this case we are lucky enough to have two ancient biographers who both have
focused one of their works on the life of Julius Caesar. These two ancient men are Plutarch and
Suetonius. By having two story tellers tell the story of the life of the same character, it makes each
writer s writing aspects that much more obvious to the reader. Plutarch has a very different collection
of features to his writing, but also see the importance of the military in that time to write his biography
about. Overall his writing is a a very good balance between informative and dramatic with different
personas to discuss aspects in Caesar s life. Suetonius has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Suetonius has a very different structured style of biography for Julius Caesar. Suetonius main focuses
is on Caesars conniving way to by any means manipulate his way into higher positions of power. A lot
of Suetonius sections book goes in great detail of how Julius was looking into political positions of
power and manipulations in order to attain those positions. Something that caught my eye is that
Suetonius was a section dedicated to simply describing the physical and mental attributes of Caesar.
Moreover, Suetonius didn t put these describing attributes throughout the biography, but saved them
all for their own little section in the biography. I think the most prominent attribute to Caesar s
personality that Suetonius makes known in his work is Caesar s love for a lavish lifestyle. Plutarch is
another ancient biographer who decides to write about the life of Julius Caesar. Plutarch also has a
very dramatic and or tragic element to his writing. By combing through his life story, Plutarch s
writing styles are discovered. Plutarch focuses mainly on military matters in Caesars life, while
sometimes adding

The Young Lords Strategies And Tactics

change that they did was their transformation from a street gang to a grassroots organization. They
went from creating problems in the street for their community to aiding their community to make
changes to their neighborhood streets. The Young Lords achieved some of their goals, but not all.
Therefore, they were partially successful, they mobilized their community and form a strong bond
with it. The Young Lords started as a gang in the streets of Chicago that later learned how to organize
and take action. The Young Lords strategies and tactics focused on educational awareness, and direct
action for the change they wanted. The Young Lords wanted everyone in the community to be
involved, so they integrated youth into the movement. The youth involved wanted change, and they
would create a movement to make that change. The Young Lords strategies and tactics were successful
in their community. The Young Lords took on the tactics of direct action when they took over the
Hospital, and the church, collect the trash and set it on fire and taking the x ray truck. Later on they
took on an education tactic, where the group wanted to educate the community by having bilingual
classes, and having the community take control on teaching their culture, and arts (Democracy Now

The Pros And Cons Of Environmental Pollution
Environmental health is your wellbeing of your surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal,
or plant lives or operates. There things effect your air pollution like carbon monoxide you can get
things like asthma. Also there clean water there different type of water depend where you live. Finally
there is way to improve your environmental health and those around you.
Cars and trucks produce air pollution throughout their life, including pollution emitted during vehicle
operation, refueling, manufacturing, and disposal. Additional emissions are associated with the refini
ary and secondary pollution. Primary pollution is emitted directly into the atmosphere; secondary
pollution results from chemical reactions between pollutants in the atmosphere. The following are the
major pollutants from motor vehicles. These particles of soot and metals give smog its murky color.
Fine particles less than one tenth the diameter of a human hair pose the most serious threat to human
health, as they can penetrate deep into lungs. PM is a direct primary pollution and a secondary
pollution from hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides. Diesel exhaust is a major
contributor to PM pollution. This odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas is formed by the combustion
of fossil fuels such as gasoline and is emitted primarily from cars and trucks. When inhaled, CO
blocks oxygen from the brain, heart, and other vital organs. Fetuses, newborn children, and people
with chronic illnesses are especially susceptible to the effects of CO. Asthma is a chronic disease
involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of
the lungs. If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. They become even more swollen and
the muscles around the airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms. This makes it
difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing,
shortness of breath and/or chest tightness.
For many asthma sufferers, timing of these symptoms is closely related to

the sinful nature that crept in because of the Fall. Scripture harrowingly states, There is none
righteous, no, not one...There is none who does good, no, not one (Romans 3:10, 12, NKJV). This
profound statement is the heart of a counselor s humility, for no amount of degrees and training can
alter these words. As an earthly counselor, I ought to identify with the struggles of a sinful nature. It is
from this vantage point that I can serve God s children with integrity by not sitting in judgment of the
stains left by sin, but rather by offering empathy, compassion, and God given guidance to the hurting
and lost. It is through this mentality that help shape a professional s

Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal Essay
In The Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal: Sources of Sadism, Marianne Szegedy Maszak informs the reader
of the situation United States guards caused against Iraqi detainees. Under Bush s presidency, United
States soldiers brought physical abuse and humiliation upon the Abu Ghraib Prison. Szegedy Maszak
briefly analyzes the situation and compares the abuse to further scientific experiments in which test
obedience. One of the experiments was the topic of another article titled, The Stanford Prison
Experiment, written by Philip G. Zimbardo. In his work, Zimbardo discusses the experiment he held at
Stanford University. A group of male students from the university were paid to participate in an
experiment held in a mock prison. Half of the group ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his article The Social Contract and Human Rights, Grant effectively shares the importance of
human rights to society. He believes even meager obedience to inadequate authority is unethical by
stating, When obedience is either enforced through conquest or slavery, or is simply the result of blind
and unthinking compliance with the law, there is no free, intelligent, and conscious choice involved
(Grant 18). In situations like the Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal, Grant would confirm human rights given
to the guards were lacking, which allowed them to conform with the social pressures of law
enforcement. While testing obedience in his experiment, Zimbardo encountered a contrary thought.
For his specific experiment, the subjects were assigned consent paperwork and monetary reward for
participation. The right to discontinue one s experience was given; however, specific instructions to
perform the roles were not. After he distributed nearly zero guidelines to his experimental guards,
Zimbardo discovered, ...the guards became more aggressive, prisoners became more passive
(Zimbardo 106). The test required only one individual to commence the abuse for the other subjects to
follow along. The editors of ABC News Primetime would agree with this, as a shocking story from a

Similarly, all the trouble was due to one

The School s Positive Relations
In terms of resources in my past, current, and future classrooms, I find the school s positive relations
amongst the teachers and faculty is a key resource for the success and growth of the students. I know
that without my mentor and department during my first year as a teacher, I would have struggled with
assessing my students past the typical exit slip or summarized that is required by our district to be part
of the lesson. Fortunately, I was a long term substitute for a full year and then merged into a
permanent position. Therefore, my department assisted me throughout my first year to provide varying
forms of Formative Diagnostic Assessments as well as interim assessments. Additionally, the school
district is continuing a debate about District Determined Measures to assess the students growth
within a year, so as a department we come up with a summative assessment to assess whether the
goals of the year have been reached. In short, I am fortunate to work with a community of life long
learners, experienced educators, and passionate peers for they have provided me with priceless
amounts of advice. While reading the articles, one particular notion that stood out to me within the
resources was when Gavriel provides the following strategy for minimizing student silence with
discussions: Provide participants with an index card each and ask them to write down a thought about
the matter under discussion. Then ask participants to pass the cards around and respond to the

George Berkeley Essay
George Berkeley was an Irish philosopher. His philosophical beliefs were centered on one main belief,
the belief that perception is the basis for existence. In doing so, he rejected the notion of a material
world in favor of an immaterial world.
Berkeley felt that all we really know about an object we learn from our perception of that object. He
recognized that in the materialist s view the real object is independent of any perceiver s perception.
The pen on my desk would exist, whether or not I was in the room to see it or have a sensory
experience of it in some way. Berkeley rejected this idea. He realized that knowledge is limited to
perception. In this realization, he postulated that everything we know we learned through ... Show

What, then, happens to an object when no one can perceive it anymore? If no one sees the tree and no
one has a sensory experience of it, does it cease to exist? This idea suggests that objects pop in and out
of reality when not being perceived by any human perceiver. Berkeley argues from an immaterialist
standpoint and says that objects do not act in such a manner. He tries to save his theory by saying that
the tree does in fact exist because God is the continuous perceiver of all things and therefore God
always perceives the tree.
This is an illegitimate appeal to save his philosophy. By saving his theory in this manner he shoots
himself in the foot. ; If God cannot be perceived, and if to be is to be perceived, then God cannot
possibly exist. Although the existence of God can be inferred through the classical ontological
argument, doing so scuttles his immaterial world. If one can have knowledge through inference, then
one can infer the existence of a material world.
Berkeley s answer to the existence of the tree in the quad is not convincing because his argument is
circular. If something must be perceived in

Ida B. Wells is well known for her influence during the civil rights and women s rights movements.
She was born in 1862 in Holly Springs Mississippi. Her parents died of yellow fever when she was
only sixteen years old. She was to be split up from her other six siblings, but she dropped out of
school and managed to get a job as a teacher and was able to keep her family together. She soon
realized the discrimination in pay that there was as she was taking home thirty dollars compared to
someone else s eighty dollars a month. Then in 1884, she was confronted by a railroad conductor,

time of lynching, and indisputably proven after the victims death, that the relationship sustained
between the man and the woman was voluntary and clandestine, and that in no court of law could even
the charge of assault have been successfully maintained. However, she also writes, The Southern

man, and therefore, the act of an alliance is a proof of force. Even though they know that the acts had
been completely consensual, the white males continued this butchery of the blacks. Anything that
could be thought up, even if it lacked truth or evidence, was used as excuses for these continued forms
of slavery. Ida also writes about the young white women from the North that left their lives behind to
go to the south and educate the newly emancipated blacks. These women were treated just as the

Harvey Velocity Theory
Shortly after the Mets 4 2 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday afternoon, the Mets quietly
announced that RHP Matt Harvey was being sent to the 15 day disabled list for discomfort in his right
shoulder. This roster move followed weeks of struggles on the mound for Harvey, who has thus far
pitched to career worst marks in ERA and K/9 marks, en route to a 4 10 record on the season. While
he s still actually pitching respectably (by FIP, Harvey s been keeping pace with Zach Greinke, Jordan
Zimmerman, and David Price), this is not the season we ve come to expect from the Dark Knight. So
what has been tormenting the pride of Gotham?

But no pitcher will ever go up on the mound without any defense behind them (unless you re Satchel
Paige), because most pitchers won t be striking out everyone they face (and by most, I mean all).
Inevitably, some batter will make contact and put the ball in place, at which point, getting the batter
out becomes the responsibility of the defense. Typically, some balls will fall in for hits, but most won
t. The percentage of the balls put in play that become hits is measured using BABIP, or Batting
Average on Balls In Play (it s also pretty fun to say). BABIP can be used to measure how good the
defense is behind a pitcher, in addition to how unlucky or lucky they are. Comparing their current
season figure season to their career number can let you know if a pitcher is over or under performing.
For instance, Jon Lester of the Cubs has been pitching this season with a .265 BABIP, which is
significantly less than his career number of .299 this indicates that he s been the beneficiary of good
defense and good luck while on the mound.
So what does this have to do with Harvey? Everything. On the season, Harvey is pitching to the tune
of an incredible .353 BABIP more than 60 points worse than his career average. His .353 figure is the
second worst in the MLB only Robbie Ray is pitching with a worse BABIP, .364 (and Ray s career
BABIP is .339, so the difference between

Three Sociological Theories
There are three types of theories that are used in sociology to view issues. The three theories are
structural functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interactionism.
One of the theories in sociology is structural functionalism, or also known has the consensus theory.
The structural functionalism level of analysis is macro. Structural functionalism is defined as a
theoretical approach that sees society as a structure with interrelated parts designed to meet the
biological and social needs of individuals of those that make up a society. This theory is all about how
everything is related. The focus of structural functionalism is the way each part of society functions
together to contribute to the whole. In addition, this is all about the structure ... Show more content on

Symbolic interactionism focuses on the relationships among individuals within a society. In addition,
this theory focus is one to one interaction and communications. Communications meaning interacting
with language and symbols with others. This theory looks at the culture aspect of the two elements
chart of society. The culture side includes values, beliefs, norms, and symbols. Culture is defined as
groups shared beliefs, practices, and values. It is how someone expresses themselves. Values are a
culture s standards for discerning what is good and just in society. Beliefs are some we believe to be
true. Norms are the visible and invisible rules of conducted through which societies are structured.
There are formal and informal norms. Formal norms are the established, written rules and laws.
Informal norms are casual behaviors that are generally and widely conformed too. Lastly, symbols are
the gestures or objects that have meanings associated with them are recognized by people who share a
culture. Language, signs, and gestures are recognized as symbols. Key terms that are associated with
symbolic interactionism: social action and interaction, socialization (language), verbal and nonverbal,

Annotated Bibliography On Nuclear Weapons
United States[edit]
Main articles: Nuclear weapons and the United States and United States and weapons of mass
destruction
The United States developed the first atomic weapons, during World War II in cooperation with the
United Kingdom and Canada as part of the Manhattan Project, out of the fear that Nazi Germany
would develop them first. It tested the first nuclear weapon in 1945 ( Trinity ), and remains the only
country to have used nuclear weapons against an enemy state in warfare, devastating the Japanese
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the first nation to develop the hydrogen bomb, testing an
experimental prototype in 1952 ( Ivy Mike ) and a deployable weapon in 1954 ( Castle Bravo ).
Throughout the Cold War it continued to modernize and enlarge its nuclear arsenal, but from 1992 on
has been involved primarily in a program of Stockpile stewardship.[28][29][30] The U.S. nuclear

The weapon was developed as a deterrent against both the United States and the Soviet Union. Two
years later, China had a fission bomb capable of being put onto a nuclear missile. It tested its first

shortest fission to fusion development known in history).[40] The country is currently thought to have
had a stockpile of around 240 warheads, though because of the limited information available,
estimates range from 100 to 400.[41][42][43] China is the only NPT nuclear weapon state to give an

Prior to the expansion of mobile networks, agricultural producers were often unaware about prices and
had to rely on information from traders and agents, the report said.
Delays in obtaining this data or misinterpretation of second hand pricing information has serious
consequences for agricultural producers, who may end up underselling their products, delivering too
little or too much of the product, or having their products wither away, the World Bank said.
The study also mentioned Cebu City where taxi drivers use mobile phones with global positioning
systems to receive traffic data and dispatch information.
The report added that social media, along with messages, videos and pictures sent from mobile
phones, were useful tools for organizing protests and monitoring democracy and freedom.
Mobile communications offer major opportunities to advance human and economic development from
providing basic access to health information to making cash payments, spurring job creation, and
stimulating citizen involvement in democratic processes, said World Bank vice president for
sustainable development Rachel Kyte.
The challenge now is to enable people, businesses and governments in developing countries to
develop their own locally relevant mobile applications so they can take full advantage of these
opportunities, Kyte added.

Essay about A Knight s Tale
The Canterbury Tales begin with The Knight s Tale; which chronicles the tragic love triangle of
Palamon, Arcite and Emilye. The following tale, which is told by the Miller, is also a love triangle,
and is in many ways similar to the Knight s tale. However, the Miller s tale sharply contrasts the
Knight s, almost parodying it. The Knight s tale is a tragic of nobility, heritage and focuses heavily on
mythology and astrology, whereas The Miller s tale is a comedy, focusing on the common man and his
less civilized, and bawdy lifestyle. The two stories mirror one another in many ways, but are presented
from completely different sides of the spectrum. When the two tales are looked at closely, it doesn t
seem to be a coincidence that they occur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nicholas does not share Palamon or Arcite s passion for true love, and comes up with a simple hoax to
trick Alison s unintelligent husband John into leaving he and Alison alone for a night. The Miller s
story continues to stray from the Knight s as a third luster is presented for Alison s affection; Absalon,
a parish clerk. As opposed to an epic battle for courtship, the story devolves into slapstick humor, with
Absalon kissing Alison s rear, and burning Nicholas in attempted revenge. The balance of the love
triangle is also thrown awry in the Miller s tale. Not only if a fourth man present, Alison s wife John
(who is not even included in any form of romance throughout the tale) but Alison s affection seem to
only be for Nicholas. She is easily seduced by Nicholas and has little, to no romantic interest in
Absalon, fooling him into kissing her rear and then laughing about it with Nicholas. These elements
merely add to the Miller s tale of perversion, distancing and parodying itself from the Knight s tale of
honor and true love. Throughout the Knight s tale, there is an aura of divinity present, with destiny
being almost predetermined. The Greek gods intervene in the mortal realm, and the prayers of
Palamon, Arcite and Emelye are all answered by the respective gods prayed too. Fate is practically
inescapable, with the universe being in a perfect order from the beginning.

Re dressing Feminist identities: Tensions Between Essential and constructed selves in Virginia Woolf s
Orlando
In this article, Burns, examines the personal identity and contextualized identity shown through
Virginia Woolf s, Orlando. Burns explains that it s not the person that changes, it s the interior self that
changes, it s the exterior self that changes. Woolf shows this by linking this theory, created by John
Locke, to the Oak Tree; the tree can be amputated of its branches or likewise to Orlando Castrated, but
it will still not change the inner self. Burns continues to explain that no change in identity has occurred
in Orlando during her body change. Although, she had a new body, Burns claims that her gender
cannot be affected until the clothes come on because the clothes are the shape the person.
Orlando Introduction by Maria Dibattista In the Gynomorphosis article, Dibattista writes that Orlando
s sex was changed which altered her future, but her identity remained the same. In addition, this
Gynomorphosis is meant under Woolf as a self actualizing event. Dibattista claims that Woolf is trying
to make us readers understand what is going on inside Orlando s mind rather than observe the events
that are happening to her. An agent that effects our mind is clothes. According to Dibattista, we are
molded by our clothing, therefore affecting how we think, feel, and speak. Clothes can mold our

Anatomical And Structural Differences Between Arteries And...
Briefly identify and discuss the anatomical and structural differences between arteries and veins.
I found the differences between arteries and veins are their functions they provide to the heart as well
as their structure. Arteries transfers blood away from the heart into the periphery resulting in the
pressure of the blood in the arteries being high. Where as, the veins transfer blood towards the heart.
Arteries carry oxygenated blood distributing it in the periphery as the pulmonary artery moves
deoxygenated blood into the lungs for purification. The wall of an artery consists of three layers
machining it thicker than veins. The elasticity within the layers of the muscle allows arteries to handle
great pressures of blood within it. The thickest layer is known as tunica media as the other two are
recognized as tunica externa, and tunica interna. The vein obtains blood from the periphery and carries
it towards the heart. Veins are known to carry deoxygenated blood and transfers it the heart for
purification. The pulmonary vein is known to carry oxygenated blood. However, there are semilunar
valves found within the vein that does not allow retrograde flow of blood in preventing blood to flow
in the opposite direction. Veins are thinner when compared to arteries consisting of thin elastic muscle
layers with one thick layer being the tunica adventitia. Arteries consist of: carrying oxygenated blood

2. What is the maximum long term achievable throughput rate of Receiving Plant #1? What factors

The maximum long term achievable throughput rate is determined by the resource with the least
capacity. As different process routes are followed by dry and wet berries, there will be distinct and
separate maximum achievable throughput rates for these two products. The capacity of the dryers is
the bottleneck for the wet berries. Therefore, the maximum throughput for wet berries is 600 bbls/hr.
As for dry berries, the separation process is the bottleneck. The maximum throughput for dry berries

minutes as the wait time decreases from 3 hours to just 45 minutes. This should definitely prove to be

The Effects Of Coercion During Interrogations
The Effects of Coercion During Interrogations
Nicholas Cox
Troy University Abstract
The interrogation process that police use requires planning, preparation, and skill. In this paper, I will
break down each element that makes up the police interrogation process and describe how flawed
interrogation tactics can make the interrogation less than completely accurate. Coercion and duress are
similar in that they both create an environment of intimidation during the interrogation process.
Coercion is defined as the use or threat of use of illegal physical methods to induce a suspect to make
an admission or confession. Accordingly, duress is the imposition of restrictions on physical behavior
such as prolonged interrogation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of pressure from peers and family members who might be present on the scene, it is
important to remove the suspect from familiar surroundings, take him or her to a location with a more
sterile and less threatening atmosphere (Lyman, 1993). If an investigator selects an inappropriate area
to conduct the interrogation, the suspect may be pressured into responses or statements that are not
true. For example, if a suspect is questioned in an environment where family is present, they might be
inclined to give deceptive responses in order to hide the truth from their family. If a suspect is
questioned in an intimidating environment, they might get pressured into a false confession if they feel
that no matter what they say the investigators already have the evidence required for a conviction.
The CIA report on enhanced interrogation techniques has a perfect example on how the place of the
interrogation is used as a factor for achieving the desired results in an interrogation. The Senate
Intelligence Committee released a report on the alleged use of torture and enhanced interrogation
techniques used at various locations to interrogate suspected terrorists. Conditions at CIA detention
sites were poor, and were especially bleak early in the program. CIA detainees at the COBALT
detention facility were kept in complete darkness and constantly shackled in isolated cells with loud
noise or music

Culture And Drinking Culture
Going to bars, clubs, and drinking alcohol are parts of various cultures and societies, especially in
America. It is a common theme to go drinking on the weekends, such as on Fridays, Saturdays, and
Sundays. It may seem like going out to drinking, may be a waste of time and/or money to buy
expensive alcohol, party in dirty clubs and to listen to bad music. However, it is an important part of
the social lives for adults.
Going out to clubs and bars and drinking is a way to get together with groups of friends in your life
through communication, making memories, for stress relief, and sharing values and norms though a
common guide. These common values and social norms allow us to help through what is consider
appropriate behaviors in the subculture we are participating in. A subculture is known as a group
within a large culture, that has values, beliefs, and interests that vary apart from the larger culture. This
subculture can be known as the alcohol drinking culture.

A world city is a large city that has been outstripped its natural urban network and become part of an

of linkages and interconnections that sustain the contemporary world economy, and its social and

Hence, world cities influence the flow of both finance and investment throughout the world thus
resulting in economic authority.
World cities are markets for a vast range of goods and services as they are areas of massive
accumulations of wealth and have extraordinary purchasing power. The importance of these cities as
markets is shown by patterns of concentrated retailing in high order consumer goods, such as clothing,
jewellery, and art. Streets such as Fifth Avenue in New York are famous for their retailing of very
expensive goods.
Cultural Authority
World cities are centres for a range of cultural facilities and world entertainment. They have theatres,
opera houses, large entertainment. They host major cultural and sporting events ranging from art
exhibitions to tennis tournaments. The 2008 Beijing Olympics and Fifa s world cup in Munich both
were viewed by over a billion people worldwide. New York for example has a very strong cultural
authority with the New York Times reporting that in 2010 48.7 million people visited New York
spending $31 billion, which is almost 7% increase when compared to the 45 million in 2009. New
York is home to a range of museums such as the museum of modern art and the Guggenheim,

cultivate the joint venture from its inception and must now choose the best direction for his company.
Terralumen s main industry is agriculture, and this venture was a means of experimenting by taking
the business in a new direction. Increased, rapid restaurant expansion would move away from the key
business and is perceived as too risky for a high uncertainty avoidance culture like Spain s.
Terralumen is also family owned, so it does not have to deal with the pressures of short term gains that
a public company like Delta foods must. Alvarez needs to try to fix the relationship, but also plan a
separation strategy.
For Mikael Södergran, he was hired to apply Delta s strategy and expand the business. Delta s
philosophy has always been against joint ventures, and he was working on dissolving this venture by
any means necessary. Going forward, he must decide the best approach to ending this venture. He
must also be aware of how his actions impact future joint ventures in Spain or elsewhere. Actions such
as not paying their share on a loan in order to default the loan will not be viewed kindly by other
companies. He not only lacks

the baby. She also uses sarcastic tone, the American asks do you feel better? , the girl replies I feel
fine, there s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine. (page 5). Yet, the American often talks in a convincing
tone in the assertive style ... but I don t want anybody but you. I don t want anyone else. And I know it
s perfecly simple. (page 4). Whereas in My Son the Fanatic Parvez and Ali often use direct words. Ali
has the assertive style of communication. At the beginning of the story, Parvez asks Ali you don t play
your guitar anymore , Ali replies there are more important things to be done (page 1). Ali is also
indirectly aggressive towards his father and Bettina don t you know it s wrong to drink alcohol? , but
it is forbidden , and so is gambling, isn t it? (page 4). Ali asks Bettina who are you to ask me these
questions? (page 7), he is indirectly referring to Bettina in a negative way. Parvez mostly talks to Ali
with the aggressive style, but what I object to, is being told by my own son that I am going to Hell!
(page 6). After Parvez and Ali s discussion about their beliefs, Parvez says but while I am here on
earth I want to make the best of it. And I want you to, as well! .... but still life is for living! (page

Engineers are viewed as the backbone of modern society. The innovation and the creativity that drives
our society forward are inspired by the teachings of engineering, whether it is transporting on a bus or
making a phone call, the work of an engineer is experienced. Engineers satisfy both themselves and
humanity which is the reason for my passion for engineering.
The idea of seeing a project come to life is what provokes my desire to become an engineer. In the
past, engineers have created the greatest historic innovations such as health technology. My passion
for chemical engineering is seeing how the fundamental theories of Chemistry, Physics and Math can

I would like to add to my degree by completing an Engineering and Social Development certification
and a minor in French at UFT. Even more, the location of this campus is ideal for me because I may
easily commute and educate myself in the heart of Toronto.
Throughout my high school life, my extracurricular involvement has helped me develop a variety of
skills. Primarily, I have been a part of the Leadership and Peer Support group as a project manager of
a conference; I exercised my leadership and collaborative skills. As an engineer, there are times where
an individual with leadership and cooperative skills must rise and become the leader in different
projects. Interpersonal skills play a significant role in an engineer s life because they will always be
required to communicate with new people. Earlier this year, a peer and I decided to start a Student
Mentorship Program and as a co founder of this group, I learned how to problem solve, make
decisions, think laterally, and work as a team. As a student, my skills will allow me to accept
challenges with confidence and contribute to discussions during lectures with new ideas. Teamwork,
leadership, interpersonal and hands on skills are key abilities engineers must contain in order to be
successful.
Engineering is an exciting field that I believe will be enjoyable, challenging, and above all, intuiting to
undertake at university. I believe pursuing engineering means exceeding your expectations and

Narcissistic Behavior In The World Of The Kardashians
People around the world of all ages present narcissistic behavior. However, they don t come out of the
womb preparing for a self centered life. They re influenced by a plethora of good intentions . This
sense of entitlement roots from parenting, a desire for celebrity status, and even social networking.
Like other things that have led to narcissism, parents meant well when they bought that princess shirt
for their daughter. I agree with the authors in that, It says a lot about our culture that people think a six
month old wearing a supermodel bib is cute (Twenge and Campbell 73). Despite how true this is, there
s more to blame considering our daily lives are being bombarded with news of what s going on in the

Religion In The Elizabethan Era
The two most prevalent religions in the Elizabethan era were Protestantism and Catholicism. When
Queen Mary came into power in 1553, she relentlessly sought out and executed those of the Protestant
belief. She maintained a deep belief in Catholicism until the day she died and Queen Elizabeth began
ruling. Unlike her half sister, Queen Elizabeth ruled the country under the religion of Protestantism.
Rather than mass murdering those who followed the Catholic religion, the Queen chose to make the
religion illegal and use the punishment of fines. This played a major role in why such a large number
of people were conflicted with the choice between their religion and their Queen. Similar issues can be
seen in the works that emerged in this era, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shakespeare s Hamlet depicts how Catholicism influences characters in their daily lives. When
Hamlet speaks to the ghost of his dead father, his father asks his son to remember [him] (1, 5, 25).
Catholics believe in the existence of Purgatory and old Hamlet s request represents this idea. As long
as people remember somebody who is stuck in Purgatory, they will arrive in Heaven. Before he dies,
Hamlet asks Horatio to draw [his] breath in pain to tell [his] story so that citizens would also
remember him (5, 2, 120). The belief in the space between Heaven and Hell is mentioned often
because Catholics also believe that repentance plays a part in where people end up after death.
Claudius reasons with himself that repentance is significant by questioning what can it not [do] when
he reflects on his past actions (3, 3, 70). Shakespeare emphasizes the importance of repenting through
the actions of his characters. This is further explored by Hamlet when he finally decides to kill
Claudius, but cannot because if he attempts to now...he [will go] to heaven because of the Catholic
belief that those who repent before death will go to Heaven. Hamlet references this when he explains
that [Claudius] took [his] father grossly, full of bread, with all his crimes broad blown, as flush as
May, which is the reason why Hamlet s father is stuck in

  • 2. Temperature Break Lab TJ November 7, 2017 Period 3 Heat Fracture on Rocks Background Heat fracture is when an increase in volume is observed, due to an increase in temperature. Simply meaning that while a material is being heated, the rise in temperature causes it to take up more space. Heat fracture doesn t only deal with high temperatures, it also deals with the effects of cooling on a material. If cooling occurs then the opposite of expansion occurs as well, the material will begin to shrink or decrease in size. Continuous heating and cooling will eventually lead to stress and that makes the material break or fracture. When the material going through this type of weathering is considered being fractured, it means it s dealing with cracking or breaking of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was believed that if the amount of time that the rock went through heating and cooling increased, then the weight of the rock would decrease because while the rock goes through more heating and cooling eventually it will fracture causing the weight to decrease. This is called heat fracture. The data gathered did prove the hypothesis to be correct. For the longer trials with more minutes, the rock s weight did decrease more rather than the shorter amount of trials. For example, the one minute trial barely had a 0.6g difference proving our hypothesis correct, while the 15 minute trial had a significant change in the rock s weight due to the longer time experiment. The graph seemed to gradually increase according to the longer trials. The only outlier was the last trial because it had such a small change compared to the other trials, although all trials did support the original ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Decline Of Nuclear Families In The 20th Century An interesting and complex modern departure from a societel norm is acting as the downfall of what is referred to as the nuclear family. The nuclear family of a husband and wife with dependant children, or a basic communal unit, acted as a catalyst of growth and societal stability in the United States for quite some time. The late 20th century appeared to experience a decline in married couples. With multifaceted forces at play, that nuclear family appears to have been destabilized by three important societal factors: a unique shift in cultural values, difficult economical environments and conditions, and ever changing statistics in population. The decline in the number of married couples and nuclear families in the late 20th century ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Cohen, 271) This delay in marriage for the future generation can simply and mathematically explain the decline in marriage in the late 20th century. To make matters worse, the shift in industrial jobs around large urban centers in the 1970s and 1980s resulted in a lowering of marriage rates among lower income and african american women; where men without steady employment or income potential found themselves shut out of the marriage market . • 4. Comparing Gobi-28 And Thank You For Saying Difficult poem according to Charles Berstein is something which is recently really popular, it s hard to appreciate. This poem makes you feel stupid either you are the author or the reader of it. At the same time, it catches your imagination and affects you somehow. First poem that came to my mind was Gobi 28 by Lui Aragon. The main feature of this poem that frightens future readers is that it was written by surrealistic author. According to the strange composition of the poem and almost terrible and revolting images, it makes Gobi 28 not the kind of best sellers. However, if you cope with the first shock and go further, you understand that it has something in it. It s not about the words, but about something which is between the ... And then I decided to compare my example of the difficult poem with the poem which is Bernstein himself considers to be difficult. I was quite surprised and felt like I didn t get something right. Thank You for Saying Thank You by Charles Bernstein seemed to be not very difficult. It has comprehensive words and composition, so it s easy to read. This poem knows everything about itself and shares it with the reader. At some point, I stopped to think about Thank You for Saying Thanks You in a serious way and looked at this poem as a pure irony. And I got it! It speaks about serious things in poetry in a not serious manner. And as I had to spend time and think about this poem longer to understand it, it is difficult. I decided to look at the main features of the difficult poem one more time and find any poem which is not difficult. And then I recognized that it was the basic description of every

  • 6. Crisis In Flint In a contemporary light, the crisis in Flint is viewed as one of the most abhorrent violations of the right to clean water. But in our initial reactions of shock and awe, we must ask one fundamental question: Is this crisis the beginning of a national catastrophe? To answer this question, we don t have to look far. Last week, the Ithaca City School District shut off their water supply after the detection of high levels of lead. In Newark, New Jersey, 17,000 children are now being tested for lead poisoning. In Long Island, New York, dilapidated cesspools leaking nitrogen have led to a mass die off of flora and fauna within the Long Island Sound. These incidents represent a fraction of the growing disaster that is our nation s water infrastructure. Experts on urban water infrastructure have characterized water mains as ticking time bombs. Their characterizations are justified for the most part many aging water mains have pipes made from wooden planks wrapped in metal coil. • 7. Altruism Over Incentives For Organ Donation Essay Altruism Over Incentives for Organ Donation Over the years, organ donation challenges and demands increased inversely in proportion to the organ shortages. The primary mission of donor s organizations is to save as many terminally ill recipients at the end stages of their lives as possible with an end goal of giving these recipients a normal a life span. The significance of organ donation is to restore an ailing person s quality of life. The ongoing issue of organ shortages may be a symptom of the current program that present an idealistic portrait of how these issues may be resolved. As a result, the mission and ultimate goal of organizations such as UNOS and Donate Life America, among others, is to obtain viable organs for their patients and to promote; education, empower altruism and establish quality ethics, and act as a resource for existing and potential donors. Organ donations can be controversial in the minds of potential organ donors due to inhumane activity, dehumanizing processes, or even the circulation of illegal revenue. Conceptual changes need to be made consistent with altruism in order to produce the desired outcome of increasing the availability of desperately needed organs and tissues. Reasons The Industrial Revolution, one of the most vital periods of change in Great Britain, occurred because of the stable economic, social, and political stance of the country, as well as brought lasting effects in Britain in each of these areas. These inventions completed the mechanization of the textile industry and prepared the way for a new system of production: large scale industry. With these developments came a need for a cheap means of transportation. To meet it, entrepreneurs invested in digging canals to ship goods to market. In 1814, the steam locomotive was invented. The first railway was completed in 1825. By 1850, Great Britain had established a railroad system encompassing over 10,000 kilometers of track. Meanwhile, it had also built a large merchant fleet, which carried British manufactured goods to all parts of the world. • 11. How Is Lucy Presented In To Kill A Mockingbird A response to Guilt John Maxwell Coetzee s novel showed that Lucy s rape was not a gendered crime, instead, was considered a race and/or class crime. David Lurie and Lucie Lurie represent South Africa s white minority, that being so, what happened to her represents the punishment to South Africa s white community (this can be well corroborate in the text), and Lucie s decision to not report the rape and remain on the farm represents one of the many novel s reposes to guilt. What happened to them, the attack and Lucy s rape, represents the punishment to the white community for the crimes they have committed against the black community. • 12. Comparing Plutarch And Suetonius Julie deTar Alyson Roy History 414 2/19/18 A great way to look at the writing styles of two separate biographers is to see how they present the life of the same person. In this case we are lucky enough to have two ancient biographers who both have focused one of their works on the life of Julius Caesar. These two ancient men are Plutarch and Suetonius. By having two story tellers tell the story of the life of the same character, it makes each writer s writing aspects that much more obvious to the reader. Plutarch has a very different collection of features to his writing, but also see the importance of the military in that time to write his biography about. Overall his writing is a a very good balance between informative and dramatic with different personas to discuss aspects in Caesar s life. Suetonius has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Suetonius has a very different structured style of biography for Julius Caesar. Suetonius main focuses is on Caesars conniving way to by any means manipulate his way into higher positions of power. A lot of Suetonius sections book goes in great detail of how Julius was looking into political positions of power and manipulations in order to attain those positions. Something that caught my eye is that Suetonius was a section dedicated to simply describing the physical and mental attributes of Caesar. Moreover, Suetonius didn t put these describing attributes throughout the biography, but saved them all for their own little section in the biography. I think the most prominent attribute to Caesar s personality that Suetonius makes known in his work is Caesar s love for a lavish lifestyle. Plutarch is another ancient biographer who decides to write about the life of Julius Caesar. Plutarch also has a very dramatic and or tragic element to his writing. By combing through his life story, Plutarch s writing styles are discovered. Plutarch focuses mainly on military matters in Caesars life, while sometimes adding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, they were partially successful, they mobilized their community and form a strong bond with it. The Young Lords started as a gang in the streets of Chicago that later learned how to organize and take action. The Young Lords strategies and tactics focused on educational awareness, and direct action for the change they wanted. The Young Lords wanted everyone in the community to be involved, so they integrated youth into the movement. The youth involved wanted change, and they would create a movement to make that change. The Young Lords strategies and tactics were successful in their community. The Young Lords took on the tactics of direct action when they took over the Hospital, and the church, collect the trash and set it on fire and taking the x ray truck. Finally there is way to improve your environmental health and those around you. Cars and trucks produce air pollution throughout their life, including pollution emitted during vehicle operation, refueling, manufacturing, and disposal. Additional emissions are associated with the refini ary and secondary pollution. Primary pollution is emitted directly into the atmosphere; secondary pollution results from chemical reactions between pollutants in the atmosphere. The following are the major pollutants from motor vehicles. These particles of soot and metals give smog its murky color. Fine particles less than one tenth the diameter of a human hair pose the most serious threat to human health, as they can penetrate deep into lungs. PM is a direct primary pollution and a secondary pollution from hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides. Diesel exhaust is a major contributor to PM pollution. This odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas is formed by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and is emitted primarily from cars and trucks. He recognized that in the materialist s view the real object is independent of any perceiver s perception. What, then, happens to an object when no one can perceive it anymore? If no one sees the tree and no one has a sensory experience of it, does it cease to exist? This idea suggests that objects pop in and out of reality when not being perceived by any human perceiver. Berkeley argues from an immaterialist standpoint and says that objects do not act in such a manner. He tries to save his theory by saying that the tree does in fact exist because God is the continuous perceiver of all things and therefore God always perceives the tree. This is an illegitimate appeal to save his philosophy. By saving his theory in this manner he shoots himself in the foot. ; If God cannot be perceived, and if to be is to be perceived, then God cannot possibly exist. Although the existence of God can be inferred through the classical ontological argument, doing so scuttles his immaterial world. • 37. Spmproject File Essay 2. What is the maximum long term achievable throughput rate of Receiving Plant #1? What factors affect this throughput rate? The maximum long term achievable throughput rate is determined by the resource with the least capacity. As different process routes are followed by dry and wet berries, there will be distinct and separate maximum achievable throughput rates for these two products. The capacity of the dryers is the bottleneck for the wet berries. Therefore, the maximum throughput for wet berries is 600 bbls/hr. As for dry berries, the separation process is the bottleneck. The maximum throughput for dry berries will therefore be 1200 bbls/hr. The maximum achievable throughput rate would be affected by changes in the percentage of ... What benefits would you expect if processing time were moved up from 11:00a.m to 7:00a.m during the peak period? Should this be done for the entire season? The above mathematical analysis predicts what may happen if processing time was moved up from 11.00AM to 7.00AM. It is evident here that the average waiting time is reduced by 2 hours and 15 minutes as the wait time decreases from 3 hours to just 45 minutes. This should definitely prove to be beneficial to the company as it quickens the business process, reduces wait time, minimizes chances of a processing emergency and hopefully improves profitability. Therefore, under the light of the current information available, there is no reason why the processing time should not be moved up to 7.00 AM during at least the peak season. The Effects Of Coercion During Interrogations The Effects of Coercion During Interrogations Nicholas Cox Troy University Abstract The interrogation process that police use requires planning, preparation, and skill. In this paper, I will break down each element that makes up the police interrogation process and describe how flawed interrogation tactics can make the interrogation less than completely accurate. Coercion and duress are similar in that they both create an environment of intimidation during the interrogation process. Coercion is defined as the use or threat of use of illegal physical methods to induce a suspect to make an admission or confession. Accordingly, duress is the imposition of restrictions on physical behavior such as prolonged interrogation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of pressure from peers and family members who might be present on the scene, it is important to remove the suspect from familiar surroundings, take him or her to a location with a more sterile and less threatening atmosphere (Lyman, 1993). If an investigator selects an inappropriate area to conduct the interrogation, the suspect may be pressured into responses or statements that are not true. For example, if a suspect is questioned in an environment where family is present, they might be inclined to give deceptive responses in order to hide the truth from their family. If a suspect is questioned in an intimidating environment, they might get pressured into a false confession if they feel that no matter what they say the investigators already have the evidence required for a conviction. The CIA report on enhanced interrogation techniques has a perfect example on how the place of the interrogation is used as a factor for achieving the desired results in an interrogation. The Senate Intelligence Committee released a report on the alleged use of torture and enhanced interrogation techniques used at various locations to interrogate suspected terrorists. Conditions at CIA detention sites were poor, and were especially bleak early in the program.
