The usage of sending text messages is greater than it used to be years ago, when it
first became available. We as humans enjoy to create new ways to communicate,
even at the cost of losing some information. Text messaging brought out the, work
smarter, not harder community by creating abbreviations and short hand versions of
words to make talking to others easier. There are even downloadable applications
(apps) that could connect two people online to see each other face to face. There are
two groups of people that are either for or against the way text messagingand apps
have influenced students formal writingand way of communication. One group of
people believe that texting and applications have a negative effect on formal writing...
This is one example of the apps that help keep couples in touch.
Michaela Cullington was studying at Marywood University when she wrote this
essay which appeared in Young Scholars in Writing. She also received a master s
degree in speech and language pathology in 2014 from the same university.
Smartphones are not only useful for helping two people meeting or love birds stay
in communication, they are also useful for regular communication between two
people or even for business interactions. She celebrate the fact that, A person is able
to say what is needed, and the other person will receive the information and respond
when it s convenient to do so (Cullington 361). This allows people to respond to
messages the next time they are available to and quickly give a response.
Abbreviations were created to take place of words, making texting and
communication easier and quicker. Although some believe that these abbreviations
are being involved in formal writing. Cullington states, [Jacquie Ream] blames the
use of acronyms and shorthand in text messages for students inability to spell and
ultimately to write well (Cullington 362). Michaela Cullington did some research of
her own to figure out whether this is true or not.
She questioned seven students, and two high school teachers, on their opinions about
the impact of texting on writing as well as analyzing student writing samples.
