Environmental Impacts Of Marine Biodiversity Essay
The state of Florida is known for its beautiful waters and diverse marine ecosystems. Millions of
people visit the state each year to vacation and enjoy Florida s many tourist attractions. One of Florida
largest attractions is its fishing. People come from all over the world to experience Florida s exciting
and productive fisheries. Florida is even called the fishing capital of the world. The state not only has
the largest number of recreational fisherman in the country it also has the second largest commercial
fishing industry. Commercial fishing in Florida has deep historical roots dating all the way back to the
1800s. In some parts of Florida whole towns and economies are centered around the commercial
fishing industry. This has led to depleted populations of several fish species in many of these areas.
The commercial extraction of large numbers of individuals from targeted marine populations and the
inadvertent by catch and habitat damage that results from that extraction have been identified as
among the most critical factors currently affecting marine biodiversity ( Brailovskaya 1236) Due to its
environmental impacts, there should be more regulation on commercial fishing including stricter size
limits, and bag limits on fish. Implementation of bycatch reduction technologies should be required of
all commercial fisherman and no fishing zones should be established.
State regulations and limits of different species have become very controversial and many people

Marijuana In Medicine
Good health is an important source of human life. Diseases and body disorders are the things that
interfered with the immune system. Doctors play an important role as the backbone of human health
and life. Many top doctors, especially the surgeon, anesthesiologist and other physicians are the
people who carry the life of the patient on their shoulders. When something goes wrong, no matter
what the cause is being, the families and the loved one blame the doctors. The most patients who need
more attention are those having brain disorders such as those use drugs.
Marijuana is an example of a drug that has sprouted up in America. It s a plant come from the
cannabis plant. It s leaves, flowers, seeds and stem has to be shredded before using it.

Dominant Theory Of Public Administration Essay
In the following paragraphs, I will explain the dominant theory in public administration practice and
elaborate on the major theoretical assumptions of the Old Public Administration. As stated in the
question, the world has transformed through globalization, information technology, and devolution of
authority since the latter part of the last century. The dominant theory in public administration has
been replaced from the traditional rule based, authority driven processes of the Old Public
Administration with market based, competition driven tactics in the New Public Management,
beginning in the 1980s (Kettl, 2000, p. 3). This was an effort to privatize government and streamline
public administration to maximize efficiency and productivity. Heavily relying on market mechanisms
to guide public programs, public administrators in the New Public Management are encouraged to
steer, not row, meaning they should not bear the burden of delivering services, but instead define
programs that others will carry out, through contracting or other means (Denhardt Denhardt, 2011, p.
13). Core values of the New Public Management include using private sector and business approaches
to the public sector, squeezing as many services as possible from smaller revenues, market style
incentives, providing customers more choices, and focusing on outputs and outcomes instead of
mainly processes.
The New Public Management in the United States was introduced and popularized by David Osborne
and Ted

Childhood And Sexual Identity Under Slavery Essay
Childhood and Sexual Identity under Slavery With so much going on back in 1850 s, especially the
biggest issue was slavery. We tend to only think that adults were only slaves but forgot that children
who were African American were also slaves too that were being put to work just like their parents.
Anthony S. Parent, Jr. and Susan Brown Wallace both teamed up to collaborate studying the issue of
children and slavery which is the untold story of the children during the times on slavery and their
knowledge of sex. After reading the studies of their work, it was very shocking and surprising that
little attention was brought up among the children during the slavery time. It was devastating to hear
such treatment happening to poor innocent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having various former slaves narrating their lives and what they went through as kids showed that the
research of this article had real factual evidence to prove the how bad it was for children. With real
former slaves telling the story it clearly showed that there was more to slavery than was taught to us in
the classroom. I personally like the article and that it showed me another point of slavery that made it
wrong. Children who were being used as house pets or as house props were just wrong so they only
grew up knowing how to be basically an obedient dog. Despite the fact that they were usually being
taken cared of inside and fed, they were still being treated no better than a dog in today s times. The
recommended audience for this all ages. The reason being is that everyone should know how harsh
times were like for slaves and how we as a whole nation should never go back to doing these things to
mistreat any human being like that. This comes to show us that how we as humans treated each other
were no better than farmers treating animals. Never should this ever happen again not just to African
Americans but to anyone including children and adults, every human should be free and have the
freedom to have their own mind and be in charge of

Sacrifice In Julia Alvarez s In The Time Of The Butterflies
A Call to Sacrifice
Julia Alvarez s In the Time of the Butterflies, fictionalizes the real life story of the four Mirabal sisters:
Patria, Maria Teresa, Minerva, and Dedé. Dominican dictator, Trujillo, has Patria, Minerva, and Maria
Teresa killed for their participation in the revolution. Though not all of the sisters gave their life, each
of them sacrificed a great deal. Throughout the novel, all four sisters heard the call to motherhood.
This call to motherhood is not the only call heard by the Mirabal sisters, however, along with this call
to motherhood, each sister is also called to sacrifice. For each sister, this call to sacrifice is answered
in a different way.
Early in her life, Dedé s father predicts that she will be a survivor: She ll bury us all, her father adds,
laughing, in silk and pearls (Alvarez, 8). In jest, Dedé s father foreshadows the ultimate result of Dedé
s firm and practical nature. Dedé is not a pushover, she can stand her ground. This practical nature is
what keeps her from joining the revolution, and what ultimately saves her life. That is not to say that it

Stereotypes Of Gamers
When most people think of gamers they think of guys whose life consist of video games and an
unhealthy lifestyle (not just physically, but mentally, socially, intellectually, and etc.). I m here to kill
that stereotype like I kill every noob in Call of Duty. I am the complete opposite of what many people
think gamers are, I m a female, my major is in Biology, and I love doing my makeup. I have always
been in love with video games, but the moment I knew I would be a true gamer was when my dad first
allowed me to play Call of Duty when I was 11 years old. Something about the game almost helped
me relax more than I ever could and that s when I opened up to more games like GTA and fighting
games. When thinking about how many articles and news stations tend to connect the violence in

my achievements is the same thing I do for completing my assignments. I focus on one thing at a time

The Positive And Negative Aspects Of The Holocaust
The word holocaust means sacrifice by fire(ushmm.org), but was later recognized as the time when
many Jews and other people that the Nazis did not like got killed. Some people also got pulled away
from their family and suffered harsh conditions. (History.com)The Holocaust was a time of war and
poverty for many Jews, Gypsies, Poles, Russians, and others that the Nazis led by Hitler tortured in
constitution camps. The Holocaust started World War II.(ushmm.org) The war was a very disgusting
and was a bloody war. Hitler, the leader of all of the Nazis, hated Jews and wanted to kill all of them.
Hitler was a Catholic, but later grew up and didn t believe in what Catholicism stated. He became Anti
Semitic, but still hated the Jews. He also blamed the loss of World War I on the Jews. This is how he
built his idea of the Nazis attacking Poland and all his Jewish enemies. Hitler and the Nazis wanted to

The Buddhist Temple That Has Created Disagreement Among...
Borobudur located on the island of Java is a Buddhist temple that has created disagreement among the
academic community. There are two schools of thought in which scholars such as art historians and
archeologist debate about what the real significance and purpose of Borobudur is about. For example,
a group of scholars argues that Borobudur is stupa. This contrasts the other scholars who contends that
Borobudur is a mandala. Although both groups of scholars adequately analyze Borobudur and provide
evidence to support their arguments, the argument that the Buddhist temple is both a mandala and
stupa is rational. In this paper, I will present evidence from both sides of the argument, in which
Borobudur has ignited copious amounts of controversy for in the scholarly communities. However, at
the end, I will argue that I disagree with both schools of thought because Borobudur is actually both a
stupa and a mandala.
A stupa is a mound like circular structure that contains the relics of a Buddha. Buddhist frequently
participate in pilgrimages to stupas because of worship opportunities. Although Buddhist architects
built Borobudur in the 9th century, but academics do not know what the original purposes of what the
structure was constructed for. However, though visual and architectural evidence many academics
believe that Borobudur is a stupa. While traditionally, a structure, like a stupa consists of one focalized
and central grand stupa: Borobudur does not; the temple is composed

Sainsbury s and Waitrose Uk Supermarkets Porter s 5 Forces...
INTRODUCTION
The UK supermarket industry is a very competitive and profitable industry. It is made up of four main
players with significant share of the market, and then various smaller companies who focus on smaller
niches in the market such as the bottom of the market discounters and the top of the line speciality
stores. It is an interesting market and this report evaluates the attractiveness of the industry using
Porter s five forces model with an insight into how market nicher Waitrose sustains a competitive
advantage. Next this report looks at how major player Sainsbury s successfully competes against its
rivals using differentiation strategies, and analyses current consumer trends and problems can effect
this industry.
UK ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Waitrose occupies a niche market, barriers for entry are still reasonably high as it has a very
well established brand image of high quality products and is the market leader for organic produce.
Threats of Substitutes
The threat of substitutes in the food retail industry can be high among the Big Four as switching costs
are relatively low and products can be similar. However, most have their own private labels and also
target slightly different markets, such as Sainsbury s having more upmarket positioning and Tesco s
cost leadership. Waitrose offers unique and differentiated products, which are, in the eyes of the
consumer, significantly superior. No other supermarket offers such premium quality products with
great service and such a large range of organic products as Waitrose, so this makes them extremely
difficult to substitute. (Euromonitor, 2008).
Bargaining Power of Buyers
Market players generally have a wide variety of potential customers, which considerably weakens
buyer power. Although consumers in this industry may be loyal to particular brands or chains, loyalty
to retailer brands is arguably less important than competitive pricing. Many supermarkets run rewards
programs for frequent shoppers, such as Tesco s Clubcard , and these schemes can help companies
retain customers and reduce buyer power.

Should Animals Be Used In A Circus
Animals should not be used in a circus. First,Animals in zoos are hurt and abused just to do a little old
trick. They are locked and cages and beaten and starved.Next, They are all cramped in a cage together
and chained up.Also, they are whipped ad smacked around to do something they do not want to do.
Animals are locked up and abused. RaeLeann Smith stats in the article that In the United States, no

witnessing what they described as routine animal abuse in the circus, including a 30 minute beating of
an elephant in Tulsa, Okla., that left the animal screaming and bleeding profusely from her wounds.
According to RaeLeann Smith Hundley and Tom reported that elephants are chained whenever they
are out of public view and are forced to perform while sick or injured. And,Animals are also stabbed

I Believe In Making Bed Research
I Believe in Making My Bed Every Morning I believe in making my bed every single morning. There
is nothing like pulling my heavy, warm comforter neatly over my wrinkled sheets. Making my bed
starts my day, leaving a renewed and wholesome feeling when I haphazardly sprint out the door in the
morning to catch my bus. I can t seem to get anything done unless I make my bed. This odd ritual
came about when I was spending the summer at my grandparents. Our house had just flooded, and we
were left in distress until we received a text from my grandma offering us a place in their home.
Needless to say, we abused that offer.. We remained in her home for three months and everyday she

In making my bed, it meant that no matter what accomplishment, big or small, was worth being proud
of. What better way to proudly display an accomplishment than a bed. Afterall a bed is the center of
attention in a room. It is the epitome of perfection in a room, the cherry on top if you will. After all it
is called the BEDroom, the only room in the house that requires a bed. The first thing someone notices
when they walk into a bedroom room is the bed, its size, color, placement. The way someone makes
their bed says a lot about their personality. Tucked corners, or folded comforter, to fluffed pillows and
satin sheets. The way someone makes their bed gives them control of something in their life. Had a
bad day at work? No worries, you made your bed. Fail a test? Well atleast you accomplished one
thing. Making your bed means your day, no matter how bad, weird, or depressing, was not a complete
failure. I remember one day I was having an awful day. I was late, failed a test, got in trouble, and was
grounded. My mom, after yelling at me through clenched teeth and giving me an excruciatingly long
lecture, asked me what she was going to do with me. I couldn t help but smile and respond

Feminist Perspectives In Criminology
This essay presents an insightful discourse on the contributions Feminist theories and perspectives
have made within the field of Criminology. It will illustrate development of these perspectives as well
as their enhancement of our understanding of women as both perpetrators and victims of crime.
Moreover, this paper will examine how the criminal justice system has historically responded to male
and female offenders and victims on a national and global scale.
Historically, researchers of females within crime have habitually been male (Crowther Dowey,
Silvestri, 2008). Feminist perspectives in Criminology have had an exceptional influence on the way
women are understood, both as perpetrators and victims of crime. One of the fundamental themes
within Feminist criminology is its strong focus on gender (primarily female) at the core of its
discourse and analysis of crime (Chesney lind, Morash 2013). Most Criminological theory and
research has been conducted by male Criminologists, focused on male offenders, and criminal justice
system responses to male offenders, overlooking women in crime, subsequently leading to accusations
of mainstream Criminology s gender ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Feminists support the idea that women experience victimisation and an intrinsically different way to
men. For example, from the Feminist perspective, there is thought to be a stronger possibility that
women will be victimised by a close friend or family member than any other person (Natarajan
Ciobanu 2010). Radical Feminists attribute this to the social institutions and norms facilitating the
victimisation of women. Feminist Criminological research has also facilitated in reshaping
Criminology s understanding of domestic violence. Considerable amounts of research surrounding
domestic violence stems from work that used the Conflict Tactics Scale (Straus and Gelles

Substance And Substance Abuse Among Inmates
Substance Abuse among Inmates
Substance abuse can be a big problem in our criminal justice system when dealing with the number of
inmates who go back to their illegal activity after being released from custody. In specific, inmates
who are drug users/ abusers are to be expected to go back to drugs once they get out. Without
treatment they do not have the tools, knowledge, or resources to stay clean on the outside when
released. The biggest hazard for an ex inmate in the community is getting back to their old life, old
friends, old contacts, and old drugs. To understand why these substance abusers are the way they are,
there must be a clear emphasis on how these substances first evolved and where they originally came
from. Focusing on substance abuse among inmates at the federal and state prison can be extremely
different when in custody and the programs and treatment that is provided in these prisons can really
have a great effect on these offenders when being released back into the community. Substance abuse
can range from a small marijuana problem to a severe heroin addiction. Substance abuse is defined as
overindulgence in or dependence on an addictive substance, especially alcohol or drugs. This is a huge
issue in our society today and has been since dated back to the earliest age of 1794 otherwise known
as the 17th century. Alcohol was the first substance that was allowed to be of consumption. Alcohol
was the first substance that was represented in American

Poverty On Children Essay
Poverty
Poverty is a chronic issue not just within the United States but throughout the whole world, but one
thing that people tend to overlook is the effect that poverty has on childhood. Many children grow up
in poverty and the effects can last for a life time. For many of these kids who grow up in these
conditions the effects include poor health, a high risk for teen pregnancy, and the lack of an education.
Poor health is a direct of effect of poverty, children with families with no money or that live in a
country that cannot provide the right kind of services do not have access to adequate medical
treatment, Psychological research has demonstrated that living in poverty has a wide range of negative
effects on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our nation s children. Poverty impacts
children within their various contexts at home, in school, and in their neighborhoods and communities
. If a child does not have the money it is impossible to get the necessary care that it needs, I witnessed
this first hand: back when I lived in Africa I wasn t much older than 3 or 4, I used to have a younger
brother who got sick and it wasn t even something very serious it was just a minor cold that could
have been easily treated but thanks to lack of hospitals and the lack of money in our household the

Recurring Scaffold In The Scarlet Letter
The Recurring Scaffold Through day and night, the scaffold is a place of punishment, awaiting its next
victim. People pass by wondering who the next victim is going to be. This public punishment causes
many to change and work to preserve their reputation. Despite this, the scaffold turns into a constant
place of punishment, in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hester s love for Dimmesdale and
Dimmesdale s cowardice hold significant meanings in the novel, which lead up to Dimmesdale
gaining a more mature mindset. Specifically, Hester s punishment portrays her love for Dimmesdale in
the first scaffold scene. Hester refuses to reveal the name of the father in spite of everyone asking her.
Dimmesdale tells Hester to reveal the name by saying, Be not silent from any mistaken pity and
tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to step down from a high place, and stand
there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than to hide a guilty heart through
life, (63) to explain that it is better for Hester to reveal the name of the father than to keep it to herself.

Freshman Year Research Paper
Freshman year can be described as the worst year of high school. The effects of puberty have sunk in,
for better or worse. Young fourteen or fifteen year old is still trying to figure out who he or she is , and
who they want to be. Middle school is over and the transition into a world of independence has begun.
A whole new world is emerging and surviving jurassic change is hard to do. Three ways to survive the

Analysis Of Lies My Teacher Told Me
For when textbook authors leave out the warts, the problems, the unfortunate character traits, and the
mistaken ideas, they reduce heroes from dramatic men and women to melodramatic stick figures.
Their inner struggles disappear and they become goody goody, not just merely good. (Loewen, pg.
29). Lies My Teacher Told Me is a non fiction book written by author, American sociologist, and
historian, James W. Loewen. The popular belief is that schools buy the textbook that best fits the
curriculum, and by following these textbooks, students are learning to the best of their ability.
However, Loewen challenges this belief by providing evidence from eighteen different American
history textbooks. He believes that people in history should not be depicted as heroes when they
simply are not. To continue, Loewen states that students find history to be so boring since they can not
relate to it or the people in it. On page 354, he even concludes his book by stating, Students will start
finding history interesting when their teachers and textbook stop lying to them. There are three great
taboos in textbook publishing... sex, religion, and social class. (Loewen, pg. 27). This quote from the
book demonstrates that textbooks only touch upon what their authors believe students should be
learning about, or in other words, the less interesting, same timeworn stories they all mostly have
already learned about. History textbooks lie to students by leaving out important details about key
events and significant people. Loewen s purpose in writing this book was to prove exactly that to
students, and to provide them with the truth. Throughout the entire book, he decides to write about
people that students are taught to consider heroes, such as; Hellen Keller, Woodrow Wilson,
Christopher Columbus, and numerous more. Loewen succeeded in exposing people American s think
of as heroes for whom they actually are, and also prospered in exposing textbooks by providing the
truth behind the stories students are all taught. Eleven chapters have shown that textbooks supply
irrelevant and even erroneous details, while omitting pivotal questions and facts in their treatments of
issues... (Loewen, pg. 301). Throughout this book, Loewen

My Journey
The journey of life is not meant to be feared and planned; it s meant to be traveled and enjoyed.
Waking up every morning, I still can t believe it s been almost two years since I moved to America. I
mean it s crazy, one year ago all the street signs are in Chinese and the next thing you know I wake up
in a world of English. I can still remember the day I step off the airplane, it was a day that changed my
life. Some of my friends were amazed by how quickly I adapted to America, but that s not true. I had a
transition year when I was 13. I have to say; I m feeling very different from two years ago when I first
walk into a world where everyone speaks English. What most of my friends don t know is that I didn t
go to Jericho straightway; I was in Syosset for 8th grade. I remember walking into the building for the
first time. My heart was pounding; I was sweating. I reported to the administrator, and I was taken to
the classroom by the social study teacher (kind of a leading teacher of the class). I walked through the
classroom door, and I sort of had a panic attack when everybody looked at me. God, I really wish I
was dead or something at that moment. I have to say how I landed in that school was a mystery to
solve. In the entire school building including staff members, I m probably the only atheist there. Every
Wednesday the whole class spends about 3 periods on Mass. On my first Wednesday there, which is
surprising also my first day there, I felt

Portrayals Of Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is an illness that affects an estimated 3.2 million people in America alone (Nemade).
Often, people have scattered reactions when they hear the word schizophrenia. Some may associate
this word with uncontrollable actions that could potentially cause harm to those around them. People
may think of serial killers, rapists, or any form of negative archetype seen in the media. According to
the DSM 5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), schizophrenia is diagnosed if the
patient experiences delusions, hallucinations, and/or disorganized speech for more than a month.
Delusions include, but are not limited to, the belief you are going to be harassed or harmed, belief

It is consumed by the masses at exponential rates, so it is only natural for the consumers to accept
most of what they see as truth. Many times there are reports of serial killers or rapists pasted all over
the media. Often, news channels will assume the perpetrator has some form of mental illness, such as
schizophrenia. Consequently, many people associate schizophrenia with a negative stereotype
associated with violence because of what they view in the media. In the scientific study, Portrayals of
Schizophrenia by Entertainment Media: A Content Analysis of Contemporary Movies, the author
reviewed 41 different films made between 1990 and 2010 with at least one main character that had
schizophrenia. The study found most characters engaged in dangerous or violent behaviors toward
themselves or others, and nearly a third engaged in homicidal behavior (Owen). Accordingly, the
negative portrayals of those with schizophrenia in movies influence the stigma among the general
public that schizophrenia is dangerous. Instinctually, people want to keep themselves safe and alive in
their day to day lives, so having this negative reaction to schizophrenia will make them feel safer by
avoiding those with the illness.
The overall view of schizophrenia from society creates a negative public stigma. People diagnosed
with a mental health problem were most likely to be seen as unpredictable, hard to talk to, and
unlikely to recover (Wood and Birtel). According to Public Perceptions of Stigma Towards People
With Schizophrenia, Depression and Anxiety, many in society view schizophrenia

Keith Jones In Philadelphia Sport
Philadelphia is notorious for being an extremely tough sports town. One day, the fan base can think
you are the best player in your league, then the next they re calling for your head and sending you on a
bus right out of town. In order to succeed in Philly, you need to be a great athlete and you have to be
consistent. Nobody succeeds in Philly by just being average . However, No one in the history of
Philadelphia sports has made a successful career off of being an average player better than... . Who
comes to mind? Jason Avant? Carlos Ruiz? Samuel Dalembert? Well the answer is no, no, and no. The
answer is Keith Jonesy Jones.
Now, some of you might be asking yourself, who the heck is Keith Jones? Keith Jones was a forward
for the Philadelphia flyers from 1998 2001. Starting from the beginning, Keith Jones was born on
November 8th, 1968 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Keith Jones, like any boy growing up in Canada,
learned to play hockey at a very young age. He started skating when he was 2 years old, and then

The city of Philadelphia is a hard working town that likes athletes that put their noses to the grindstone
and play hard. Keith Jones played the role of the grinder which meant Jonesy would do all the hard
work in the corners and get the puck to the stars so they could score the goals. Jonesy also had to do
the fighting, and through this he showed his grit by never backing down. Also, Philly is considered the
city of brotherly love so for example, Philadelphians are nice to their neighbors (however there is the
occasional argument or feud between neighbors) and Philadelphians like to think they are better than
the rich snobs from new york, or the classless citizens of Boston. Jonesy embodied this by playing the

The Islamic World
After the death of Ali in 661, the Muslim world was on unstable ground. As a cousin of Muhammad
and a link in the direct progeny of The Prophet, his death and succession would cause much strife ad
bloodshed in generations to come. Seizing power as caliph in 661 was Mu awiya b. Abu Sufyan, the
first of the Umayyad family to hold this position where an Umayyad would maintain the throne for the
next nearly 90 years. Throughout the time of the Umayyad rule from 661 to 750, these caliphs had a
tremendous impact on not only the Arabian Peninsula, but most of the nations through North Africa,
Southwestern Europe, and east into Central Asia. It s hard to measure the effects of this troubled
dynasty without speculation, but it s fair to say they had both highs and many lows. The Umayyads
consolidated power and eventually improved the governance of their growing empire, expanded their
own economic capabilities, and also advanced Arab and Muslim culture throughout the region.
However, rapid imperial expansion, tribal feuds, intra family conflict over successions, and the
misconduct of some caliphs leaves some wondering if more harm or good was done during the
Umayyad reign. When Mu awiya became caliph, some of the first actions he took were to begin the
initial consolidations and centralizations of power (not to the extent of later Umayyad caliphs), begin
more military expansions, and used his skills as a politician and statesman to hold the Muslim world

Social Attitudes In The Great Gatsby
I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most
poignant moments of night and life (Fitzgerald, p.xx). This is the feeling one might feel in their lives
no matter how much money they have. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby to portray the
different social attitudes within the upper class. F. Scott Fitzgerald was born Francis Scott Key
Fitzgerald on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was 29 years old when The Great Gatsby
was published on April 10, 1925. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald sheds light on the different
personalities between the aged rich families and the modern rich families. An example of the
sophistication of Gatsby are the elaborate parties he throws for the people he invites, while on the
other hand, Tom and Daisy have a simple dinner with only a few people over. The emptiness one
might feel at any time in their life cannot be fulfilled with money but only with other friends
surrounding one. Gatsby is characterized as a very elaborate man sophisticated in his ways. He is
always seen throwing extravagant parties with only the best of the best belongings in his home. One
week ends his Rolls Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in
the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to
meet all trains. ( Melville, p.39). Nick explains the bizarre lifestyle that Gatsby had with all his parties.
Although, throughout Gatsby s life, the reader is able to see the emptiness he feels without Daisy. I,m
just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her about that unpleasantness this afternoon. She s
locked herself into her room, and if he tries any brutality she s going to turn the light out and on again.
(Melville, p.144). Here, the reader recognizes the love Gatsby has for daisy. He is willing to wait all
night in order to be sure of her protection. Gatsby has called off all of his parties and fired all of his
servants just to spend time with daisy. In doing this, Gatsby shows great qualities that one should look
for in another person: love, loyalty, trust, and a kind heart. Unfortunately, these attributes led to
Gatsby s death,

Advantages Of Waterfall Methodology
Christine McKay
CMGT410
October 23, 2017
Week 5 Final The waterfall methodology is one of the most prominently recognized and most utilized
methods in project management. Whether you re using the waterfall methodology to manage a project
or in some other fashion, let s say for example, in software development, it works the same in
producing a product in a sequential manner and design, and in a series of stages that follow each other
one after another. This means, once a person completes one step they move onto the next step and not
before. As this process is sequential, once a step has been completed, the person cannot go back to a
previous step not without scratching the whole project and starting from the beginning. There s no
room for change or error, so a project outcome and an extensive plan must be set in the beginning and
then followed carefully. The Agile project management approach, also referenced by the Agile ...

The disadvantages of the waterfall methodology we re, in essence, resolved by implementing an
incremental approach, with the introduction of the Agile methodology approach. The Agile approach
introduced a much more simplistic design that included modules broken down into prioritized sprints .
These sprints were recognized as a benefit to many project management teams as they allowed project
managers the ability to perform enhanced evaluations on a much more frequent basis. This also
provides increased opportunities for the discovery of bugs and customer feedback as completed phases
are rolled out. One of the biggest disadvantages to the utilizing the Agile methodology is not having a
clear and concise project deadline, the projects end result and budgetary confinements can vary greatly
and the end result can be grossly different than what the original scoping plan had planned intended it

Forrest Gump Sociology
Forrest Gump sits on a park bench in Savannah, Georgia while waiting for a bus to arrive. A single
frizzled white feather, floats through the sky carried by the breeze as the movie s title sequence

Forrest s decides to pick up the feather and place it into his briefcase that sits beside him. What is the
significance of such a scene at the beginning of a movie? Why a feather and why does Forrest put in
into his suitcase?
The feather must have a meaning considering the movie Forrest Gump was released in 1994 when

Gump, life is merely coincidental events and how one responds to those events. Her famous quote,
Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you re gonna get, emcompasses chance because
just like you do not know what type of chocolate you are going to pick from a box of chocolates, you
do not know what events are going to happen in life. Upon first examination, it would seem as if the
actions and events relating to Forrest Gump convey a coincidental outlook on life. Forrest has no real
plans or desires (besides Jenny) for the future and simply drifts through life with a go with the flow
type attitude. For example, after graduating from college an Army recruiter handed Forrest a pamphlet
and asked if he had given any thought towards his future. Forrest simply replies, Thought? and in the
next scene he had joined the Army. Perhaps this scene encompasses Forest s perchance philosophy on
life or it simply highlights his slow wits but either way throughout the movie there are countless
examples of Forrest s seemingly dumb luck. While staying in a hotel in Washington D.C., Forrest
innocently called the hotel maintenance after it appeared the lights were off in one of the neighboring

This conflict has caused Winston to become vulnerable to the manipulative actions of Big Brother.
However, Winston said enough was enough. This conflict is resolved by Winston rebelling against the

government had on it s citizens. For example, the government used this act of injustice for the good of
themselves and to gain the support of the population. Little did the people know that their privacy was
being violated and that the government was abusing its power. This goes to show how manipulative
the government is and how they use propaganda to gain the votes of a vulnerable nation. Themes: One

A Leg Stand On By Oliver Sacks
A Leg to Stand On, by Oliver Sacks, is a book about Sacks himself. Sacks depicts the story of his self
induced disability, and the mental/physical barriers he faced within recovery, and acceptance. Sacks
broke down this process into seven steps: the mountain, becoming a patient, limbo, quickening,
Solvitur Ambulando, convalescence, and understanding. Along with the physical and mental barriers
he faced, there were many macro/micro contextual level issues throughout the book. These issues
included problems with his doctors, with his self identification, and body ego. Sacks grew up as an
athletic individual, his health being a main priority throughout his life. He talks about how he grew up
valuing his physical health more than anything, appreciating what hid body could do and using it to its
fullest advantage. Within his physical training, he trained to climb a mountain called Hardanger Fjord.
While climbing this mountain he expressed how his body was an instrument in which he played and
used to create the music of his physical endurance. When he was reaching the peak of the mountain,
he encountered a sign warning him of dangerous bulls on the mountain. Him thinking he was a
superior being and superior to this warning, he continued his hike despite the warning. Suddenly he
was faced with the danger this deadly bull, frozen in place from his own fear. At first he saw the
beauty within the bull, but when he realizes the danger he is in, the bull became ugly and terrifying.

The Characters Of Genenys In A Separate Peace By John Knowles
The word naive is an adjective used to describe someone deficient in worldly wisdom or informed
judgment. The word daring is an adjective used to describe someone that is venturesomely bold in
action or thought. What is the connection between these two characteristics? They both describe the
character Phineas, the central character of A Separate Peace. In A Separate Peace, John Knowles
employs dialogue and actions to characterize Phineas as a naive and daring static character.
John Knowles implies Phineas is naive through the implementation of dialogue. Phineas confesses to
Gene that [he] hope[s] [Gene is] having a pretty good time here... you can t come by yourself, and at
this teenage period in life the proper person is your best pal. (48). The boys live in a masculine society
where they are expected to be strong. To expose one s feelings to someone else is often considered
social suicide. Gene takes advantage of Phineas naivetivé by not responding to his declaration of
friendship. Phineas also asserted that when you really love something, then it loves you back, in
whatever way it has to love (111). Phineas philosophy is centered around a world of youth of peace;
he always tries to find the best in everyone. This naive attitude contrasts with the cruel nature of the
world, where wars and competitions are common occurrences. At Gene s trial for Phineas fall, Phineas

The meat, berries, fruits, and nuts were crushed. Then they poured melted buffalo fat over the mixture.

According to CDC and EMA statistic the annual death toll due to multi drug resistant bacterial
infections is estimated at 23,000 in the US and 25,000 in Europe (Aminor). Western medicine depends
on antibiotics for everyday illnesses but, antibiotics are becoming a serious issue for future healthcare.
The United States is being propelled into an era of medicine where the effectiveness of antibiotics is
rapidly declining. In the United States, methicillin resistant S.aureus (MRSA) infections alone account
for more deaths than HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis combined (Abedon). Investing in alternate
approaches to medical treatment is necessary and because of that bacteriophage therapy is starting to

Common names that are associated with the first investigation into the phenomenon of phages are
Frederick Twort, a medically trained bacteriologist from England, and Felix d Herelle, a French
Canadian microbiologist. The history of phage discovery and research is so complicated that the
scientific world has simply accepted referring to the discovery as the Twort d Herelle phenomenon.
Twort was the first to notice and describe the characteristics of lysis associated with phage infection in
1915. However, Abedon states that it was d Herelle who identified the source of this phenomenon and
coined the term bacteriophage . D Herelle was also the first to use phages therapeutically and
successfully (2). Due to the limitations of the time, and the poor delivery of phages where intended,
most of d Herelle s work was scrutinized throughout the scientific community.
Treatments throughout the world had mixed success from the very beginning. In one trial of phage
therapy in India, 1931, d Herelle observed a 90% reduction in mortality with 74 lethal outcomes in the
control group and only 5 in the experimental group. However, because of the lack of reliability and
other limitations that were present during the time period, phage therapy was widely dismissed by
most of western medicine, especially after the introduction of pharmaceutical antibiotics in the 1940 s

person has made are gone in an instant because he can no longer endure the pain. People face
challenges and sometimes hardships, but all of this is a part of life. One nags and bitches about how

Without suffering and pain, life would not mean anything. One would live in a perfect world with a
perfect family and in perfect harmony. Life would be meaningless if the world were a utopia. There
would not be balance between good and bad and it would not be worth to live since there would be no
challenges or fears.de Botton gives us a quote explaining what one would face if they chose the easy
way out of tough times and what they would face in the end. He says:
What if pleasure and displeasure were so tied together that whoever wanted to have as much as
possible of one must also have as much as possible of the other... you have the choice: either as little
pleasure as possible, painless in brief...or as much displeasure as possible as the price for the growth
of an abundance of subtle pleasures and joys that have rarely been released yet? If you decide for the
former and desire to diminish and lower the level of human pain, you also have to diminish and lower
the level of their capacity for joy (215).
Pleasure and difficulties are tied together and they work like a scale. On one side, we have pleasure
and on the other difficulties. If one cheats in life and has too many pleasures, one will suffer
hardships. However if one faces the hardships and goes through difficulties in order to be successful,
one will be happy in the end. People end their joys if they choose to cheat and take the short cuts. It is
important for people to understand why

The Inherent Ethical Dilemma Of A Company
The inherent ethical dilemma that presents itself in this case is whether or not it is ethical to cut
corners to make a profit. The management is aware of the issue, yet continues to allow the defective
drives to be sold in order to attempt to appease the company s new CEO. Is it ethical for a company to
sell a defective product in order to avoid loss?
The obvious IT component that lends itself to the circumstances of this case takes the form of the
defective Hard Drives. However, there are many other possible IT components playing a role in the
background. Such components would include an inventory management system and a defect
management system, alongside App and Database servers respectively to allow these systems to
function properly. Other IT components at work may include a CRM system for ensuring customer
satisfaction, a POS system, possibly including hardware such as scanners for sales and returns.
Desktops and laptops may also be in use by employees of the company, as well as an Intranet and
Extranet to share and access information on those machines.
One critical stakeholder in the case is the CEO of PrimeDrive, Mr. Stokes. An important right for him

Spectrum does about $1bn from Wal Mart each year, so having a partnership with an American

For any British company that wants to be successful in the US, it is mission critical to have a credible

Americans like the spunk and gutsiness of Brits in business and how we do things but America is

First, there s the UK Azor 5 launch to contend with and the competition is upping the ante. Schick is

The Impact of Multinational Enterprise (Mne) on the...
Over the years, Multinational enterprise have matured and developed into large companies that they
are now part of our everyday lives. Form the use of mobile phones to the cars, personal computers and
their software and even the beverage we drink, most of these products are supplied by Multinational
companies. Their existence has great impact on our lives. In the world today, Multinational enterprises
are powerful companies and they own resources in excess that most host countries possess. These
companies are so powerful that they turn out to be power centers that can manipulate the host
countries and even international organizations and at times the affairs in its home country. The setup

funds, land, labour, equipment and technology (Shenkar Luo, 2008). This mode of entry is one of the
most common and complex strategy. One of the forms of FDI includes ownership of operations. It
could be either partial ownership or wholly ownership. Partially owned operations include Greenfield
investment and wholly owned operations include partial acquisition and joint venture. FDI creates a
long term relationship between both investing company and host country. One advantage of foreign
direct investment is it allows the company to maintain the daily management of production creating
more opportunities in the foreign market. Nestle Nigerian Plc enjoyed the privilege of been one of the
first company to invest in the beverage sector in Nigeria giving them a firm ground in the local
market. It should be noted that FDI is a common entry mode for most MNE with vast experience in
international business. Other entry modes are exporting, joint venture, franchising and licensing.
Analyze competitiveness. Competitiveness is the force needed to win when in competition with other
competitors in the same business. Country competitiveness can be defined as the amount of riches a
country is able to generate more than its competitors. It can also be said to be the major determinant of
the standard of living for a country and also the main its source of income. Productivity is also

empiricism Essay
Empiricism
Empiricism by nature is the belief that there is no knowledge without experience. How can one know
what something tastes like if they have never tasted it? For example, would someone know that an
apple is red if they have never actually have seen one. Someone can tell you an apple is red, but, if
you never have seen one, can you really be sure?
Empiricists use three anchor points in which they derive their opinions from. The first of these points
is; the only source of genuine knowledge is sense experience. An easier way to understand this is to
compare the mind to a clean sponge. As the sponge touches things, it takes with it, a piece of
everything it touches. Without this, the sponge would remain clean and be void of anything ... Show

Another of the classic empiricists is George Berkeley (1685 1753), who believes that knowledge is
possible. He believed that it was only through experience and not reason that we have knowledge of
reality (p.99). The best way to describe what Berkeley was trying to say would be found in what we
call today idealism. Idealism by definition is a position that maintains that ultimate reality is mental or
spiritual in nature. He believed that reality is made up in many individual minds rather than one
cosmic mind. Hence, when Berkeley says that we have an idea of something he is not necessarily
referring to a particular concept but to the experience of our memory of the combined ideas.
The third empiricist is David Hume (1711 1776) and he does not answer this question as easily as the
first two have. He believes that knowledge is possible but is limited by what we cannot know about
the world outside of our own experience. Since we can only know the contents of our individual
minds, knowledge would and can be different for each person. Hume believes that sensory data is key
for any individual in order to know something is real. For example, if two people were sitting together,
one possessing the ability to see and hear and the other does not, could the one the latter really know
that a car drove by and that fact that it was red? Examples like this one are why Hume

Preparing Teachers for Certification Essay
Preparing Teachers for Certification
Each state has its own specific standards that are constantly under revision. The state of Maryland
issues teacher certificates for early child hood, elementary education, special education, and then
several areas of secondary education. Many of these areas are the traditional, core subjects but
certificates can also be obtained in areas like outdoor education, agriculture, data processing, or as a
work based learning coordinator. (Certification Educator Information System, n.d.) To gain
certification in each area, a prospective teacher must complete an approved program that leads to that
particular certification. The traditional method of certification is through college and university
programs and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Maryland State Department of Education website contains a user friendly application process for
teachers, providing a method to apply for, renew, or reinstate a teaching certificate. It also supplies the
current listing of the approved programs in Maryland to receive certification as well as newer
requirements.
Maintaining Certification
Even after a teacher receives his/her initial certification, there is a good deal more that goes in to the
process. There are many things required of them in order to maintain certification and they are always
changing as new programs are put in effect and other rules invoked. For example, in July 1998, the
State Board of Education increased the number of reading credits for teachers at all educational levels.
(Certification educator information system, n.d.) There are different reading requirements now for
each certified teacher depending on the grade level they teach. Some states are also starting to require
teachers to go for their master s degree and others are offering monetary incentive to do so. Twenty
states require either a master s or graduate course work for teachers by the end of their first few years
on the job, up from only a few states a decade ago. Nearly all school districts give a salary bump for
the master s credential. (Golden, 2003)
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is a non profit organization that has
developed a program for an advanced teacher

Essay on Red Lobster s Ethical Dilemma
Red Lobster s Ethical Dilemma Term Paper
Gerry Mullen, CEO of Red Lobster restaurants, has been faced with a dilemma. He recently received
an email from Terry Modotti, Vice President for Public Relations concerning the lobster retrieval in La
Mosquitia, also known as the Mosquito Coast. The article states that many of the young working men
are being killed and maimed to make lobsters available at cheap process to consumers in the United
States. The men, known as buzos, must dive up to 130 feet for lobster, and face dangerous
decompression sickness which begins with paralysis and ends in a slow death. This is due to the fact
that there are no medical or decompression facilities on the boats, and there is also no equipment to
aid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another disadvantage of implementing this option would be that net earnings would decrease due to a
decrease in consumers, and shareholders will be angered by the decreasing figures of the company.
With all of the negativity being placed upon the company as a result of this option, a bad light would
be shown on the CEO and the company, especially since Gerry is relatively new. Since there are
clearly more disadvantages than advantages for Gerry and Red Lobster by exercising this option, I
would advise Gerry to further pursue other options. Another option with which Gerry could
investigate would be for Red Lobster to offer to pay a higher price for lobster to boat companies in the
Mosquito Coast in order for the divers to receive a higher salary cut. A possible advantage to this is
that it would provide a better living environment for the divers. It is stated in the article that after the
sacabuzos (middlemen), boat captains, and fish processors take their share of the money, what remains
for the buzos is a mere $2 per pound of lobster fetched. Within a two week time period, this rate will
amount to about $300. If the divers are trying to support families, $300 for two weeks is quite meager.
By increasing the price that Red Lobster is willing to pay for wholesale lobster, the divers will benefit
considerably due to a higher salary. Another advantage to a higher salary would mean that more
individuals would be inclined to become divers,

The Conflict Between Religion And Science
Is there a conflict between religion and science, or are both items compatible? This question is
addressed in the debate that is written about in the book Science and Religion, Are they Compatible,
by Daniel C. Dennett and Alvin Plantinga. Alvin Plantinga thoroughly debates the topic by covering
the compatibility of Christianity and science. He continues his argument by stating the issue of
naturalist and science harbor the conflict not the theism. Plantinga goes into detail how some scientific
theories without the help of theism has conflict and should be considered falsifiable because of the
contradictions they possess. While Alvin Plantinga does make a prominent effort to illustrate how
religion and science are compatible, there are also some flaws in his well developed debate between
Daniel Dennett.
Alvin Plantinga begins his side of the debate by using Christianity to demonstrate the how science and
religion do not possess a problem together. The items that are used to illustrate the point that is being
made is the different doctrines used in the different types of Christianity, such as the Apostles Creed.
There is not a conflict between the scientific fields of chemistry, physics, or the religion Christianity.
He choose to use the theory of evolution to compare religion against because the theory of evolution
does not state whether it is a guided or unguided process of creation. Plantinga creatively debates the
comparison between the two by using different religious

Tupac Meaning
Interpretation of Life Goes On Tupac Shakur, in some people s opinion, was one of the greatest
rappers that s ever lived. Over a decade ago Tupac wrote an inspirational song named, Life goes on.
Life goes on, seems to be about the streets taking people s lives, and how even though you lose
someone, you can t waste time mourning because that not what the victim would want you to do; the
victim would want you to live your life because they are not coming back. The three stanzas in the
song gives the audience the feeling that Tupac has lost friend through death, jail, and soon his time to
die will come but he would not want any sad faces and tears, just happiness, because life goes on. In
verse one, the speaker seems to be describing walking through the hallways of prison for bail. Breath
Stinking/ in my jaws, implies that the artist had just awaken, was rushed, and didn t have any time to
brush his teeth because it was time for him to leave. After leaving the prison it seems as if he was
surrounded by loud people he knows that s filled with excitement because of his release from prison.
Then, ring, ring, ring, /quiet yawl/ incoming call, gives the audience ... Show more content on

These symptoms are: Delusions which are strange beliefs that are not based in reality. Another
positive symptom are hallucinations which makes people hear voices, feel touched when they are not

beliefs about being persecuted or being punished by someone. Their thinking, speech, and emotions

Digital Story Project Analysis
At the start of the project, I was a bit nervous and hesitant about how I would go about with the
project, considering I had no video editing/creating experience. I knew that the digital story project
was important and a great opportunity to reach out to others in the community. It was great be a part of
something that can make a difference. When Sara and I first met with Monica for the first time prior to
the real interview, it was a really nice conversation between all three of us. I felt that Monica was
meant to be our interviewee and that it was our mission to share her story. That first interaction with
Monica reminded me of both of my mother here in the U.S. and in Vietnam. It reminded me of how
hard they have to work everyday to enable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, I would make sure that the tape recorder worked properly and that I knew what all the buttons
were. Since it was my first time using a tape recorder, I know I shouldn t blame myself. Secondly, I
would make sure to create a list of questions that was more organized and similar to create a story.
Thirdly, I would make sure that Monica had all the knowledge and resources to communicate with us
and the ability to use her phone/email. This is because we learned that Monica didn t have a lot of
experience with technology and she didn t know how to exactly worked her email. Throughout the
project, we would learn that she had a friend that helped her send emails and so on. If I was given a do
over, I would figure out what was the most easiest way for Monica to re record and learn what her
strength and weakness were. I realized that it would ve been easier if the tape recorder worked the first
time we did the interview. Either way, the digital story project was an amazing experience for me and
it truly pushed me out of my comfort zone. I learned that everything is a learning process, and that I
should not be too hard on myself. Now that I have learned the basic of video editing, I am excited to
do more! (Thank you Professor Nguyen for making the learning process so exciting). In the end, I am
looking forward to work on future projects with Amy and to further help them with their goals in
changing how the world view

  • 2. Environmental Impacts Of Marine Biodiversity Essay The state of Florida is known for its beautiful waters and diverse marine ecosystems. Millions of people visit the state each year to vacation and enjoy Florida s many tourist attractions. One of Florida largest attractions is its fishing. People come from all over the world to experience Florida s exciting and productive fisheries. Florida is even called the fishing capital of the world. The state not only has the largest number of recreational fisherman in the country it also has the second largest commercial fishing industry. Commercial fishing in Florida has deep historical roots dating all the way back to the 1800s. In some parts of Florida whole towns and economies are centered around the commercial fishing industry. This has led to depleted populations of several fish species in many of these areas. The commercial extraction of large numbers of individuals from targeted marine populations and the inadvertent by catch and habitat damage that results from that extraction have been identified as among the most critical factors currently affecting marine biodiversity ( Brailovskaya 1236) Due to its environmental impacts, there should be more regulation on commercial fishing including stricter size limits, and bag limits on fish. Implementation of bycatch reduction technologies should be required of all commercial fisherman and no fishing zones should be established. State regulations and limits of different species have become very controversial and many people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Dominant Theory Of Public Administration Essay In the following paragraphs, I will explain the dominant theory in public administration practice and elaborate on the major theoretical assumptions of the Old Public Administration. As stated in the question, the world has transformed through globalization, information technology, and devolution of authority since the latter part of the last century. The dominant theory in public administration has been replaced from the traditional rule based, authority driven processes of the Old Public Administration with market based, competition driven tactics in the New Public Management, beginning in the 1980s (Kettl, 2000, p. 3). This was an effort to privatize government and streamline public administration to maximize efficiency and productivity. Heavily relying on market mechanisms to guide public programs, public administrators in the New Public Management are encouraged to steer, not row, meaning they should not bear the burden of delivering services, but instead define programs that others will carry out, through contracting or other means (Denhardt Denhardt, 2011, p. 13). Core values of the New Public Management include using private sector and business approaches to the public sector, squeezing as many services as possible from smaller revenues, market style incentives, providing customers more choices, and focusing on outputs and outcomes instead of mainly processes. The New Public Management in the United States was introduced and popularized by David Osborne and Ted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Childhood And Sexual Identity Under Slavery Essay Childhood and Sexual Identity under Slavery With so much going on back in 1850 s, especially the biggest issue was slavery. We tend to only think that adults were only slaves but forgot that children who were African American were also slaves too that were being put to work just like their parents. Anthony S. Parent, Jr. and Susan Brown Wallace both teamed up to collaborate studying the issue of children and slavery which is the untold story of the children during the times on slavery and their knowledge of sex. After reading the studies of their work, it was very shocking and surprising that little attention was brought up among the children during the slavery time. It was devastating to hear such treatment happening to poor innocent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having various former slaves narrating their lives and what they went through as kids showed that the research of this article had real factual evidence to prove the how bad it was for children. With real former slaves telling the story it clearly showed that there was more to slavery than was taught to us in the classroom. I personally like the article and that it showed me another point of slavery that made it wrong. Children who were being used as house pets or as house props were just wrong so they only grew up knowing how to be basically an obedient dog. Despite the fact that they were usually being taken cared of inside and fed, they were still being treated no better than a dog in today s times. The recommended audience for this all ages. The reason being is that everyone should know how harsh times were like for slaves and how we as a whole nation should never go back to doing these things to mistreat any human being like that. This comes to show us that how we as humans treated each other were no better than farmers treating animals. Never should this ever happen again not just to African Americans but to anyone including children and adults, every human should be free and have the freedom to have their own mind and be in charge of ... Sacrifice In Julia Alvarez s In The Time Of The Butterflies A Call to Sacrifice Julia Alvarez s In the Time of the Butterflies, fictionalizes the real life story of the four Mirabal sisters: Patria, Maria Teresa, Minerva, and Dedé. Dominican dictator, Trujillo, has Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa killed for their participation in the revolution. Though not all of the sisters gave their life, each of them sacrificed a great deal. Throughout the novel, all four sisters heard the call to motherhood. This call to motherhood is not the only call heard by the Mirabal sisters, however, along with this call to motherhood, each sister is also called to sacrifice. For each sister, this call to sacrifice is answered in a different way. Early in her life, Dedé s father predicts that she will be a survivor: She ll bury us all, her father adds, laughing, in silk and pearls (Alvarez, 8). In jest, Dedé s father foreshadows the ultimate result of Dedé s firm and practical nature. Dedé is not a pushover, she can stand her ground. • 11. The Buddhist Temple That Has Created Disagreement Among... Borobudur located on the island of Java is a Buddhist temple that has created disagreement among the academic community. There are two schools of thought in which scholars such as art historians and archeologist debate about what the real significance and purpose of Borobudur is about. For example, a group of scholars argues that Borobudur is stupa. This contrasts the other scholars who contends that Borobudur is a mandala. Although both groups of scholars adequately analyze Borobudur and provide evidence to support their arguments, the argument that the Buddhist temple is both a mandala and stupa is rational. In this paper, I will present evidence from both sides of the argument, in which Borobudur has ignited copious amounts of controversy for in the scholarly communities. However, at the end, I will argue that I disagree with both schools of thought because Borobudur is actually both a stupa and a mandala. A stupa is a mound like circular structure that contains the relics of a Buddha. Buddhist frequently participate in pilgrimages to stupas because of worship opportunities. Although Buddhist architects built Borobudur in the 9th century, but academics do not know what the original purposes of what the structure was constructed for. However, though visual and architectural evidence many academics believe that Borobudur is a stupa. It is an interesting market and this report evaluates the attractiveness of the industry using Porter s five forces model with an insight into how market nicher Waitrose sustains a competitive advantage. Next this report looks at how major player Sainsbury s successfully competes against its rivals using differentiation strategies, and analyses current consumer trends and problems can effect this industry. UK ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Waitrose occupies a niche market, barriers for entry are still reasonably high as it has a very well established brand image of high quality products and is the market leader for organic produce. Threats of Substitutes The threat of substitutes in the food retail industry can be high among the Big Four as switching costs are relatively low and products can be similar. However, most have their own private labels and also target slightly different markets, such as Sainsbury s having more upmarket positioning and Tesco s cost leadership. Waitrose offers unique and differentiated products, which are, in the eyes of the consumer, significantly superior. No other supermarket offers such premium quality products with great service and such a large range of organic products as Waitrose, so this makes them extremely difficult to substitute. (Euromonitor, 2008). Bargaining Power of Buyers Market players generally have a wide variety of potential customers, which considerably weakens buyer power. Although consumers in this industry may be loyal to particular brands or chains, loyalty to retailer brands is arguably less important than competitive pricing. Many supermarkets run rewards programs for frequent shoppers, such as Tesco s Clubcard , and these schemes can help companies retain customers and reduce buyer power. ... There is nothing like pulling my heavy, warm comforter neatly over my wrinkled sheets. Making my bed starts my day, leaving a renewed and wholesome feeling when I haphazardly sprint out the door in the morning to catch my bus. I can t seem to get anything done unless I make my bed. This odd ritual came about when I was spending the summer at my grandparents. Our house had just flooded, and we were left in distress until we received a text from my grandma offering us a place in their home. Needless to say, we abused that offer.. In making my bed, it meant that no matter what accomplishment, big or small, was worth being proud of. What better way to proudly display an accomplishment than a bed. Afterall a bed is the center of attention in a room. It is the epitome of perfection in a room, the cherry on top if you will. After all it is called the BEDroom, the only room in the house that requires a bed. The first thing someone notices when they walk into a bedroom room is the bed, its size, color, placement. The way someone makes their bed says a lot about their personality. Tucked corners, or folded comforter, to fluffed pillows and satin sheets. The way someone makes their bed gives them control of something in their life. Had a bad day at work? No worries, you made your bed. Fail a test? Well atleast you accomplished one thing. Making your bed means your day, no matter how bad, weird, or depressing, was not a complete failure. I remember one day I was having an awful day. • 15. Feminist Perspectives In Criminology This essay presents an insightful discourse on the contributions Feminist theories and perspectives have made within the field of Criminology. It will illustrate development of these perspectives as well as their enhancement of our understanding of women as both perpetrators and victims of crime. Moreover, this paper will examine how the criminal justice system has historically responded to male and female offenders and victims on a national and global scale. Historically, researchers of females within crime have habitually been male (Crowther Dowey, Silvestri, 2008). Feminist perspectives in Criminology have had an exceptional influence on the way women are understood, both as perpetrators and victims of crime. One of the fundamental themes within Feminist criminology is its strong focus on gender (primarily female) at the core of its discourse and analysis of crime (Chesney lind, Morash 2013). Most Criminological theory and research has been conducted by male Criminologists, focused on male offenders, and criminal justice system responses to male offenders, overlooking women in crime, subsequently leading to accusations of mainstream Criminology s gender ... Radical Feminists attribute this to the social institutions and norms facilitating the victimisation of women. • 16. Substance And Substance Abuse Among Inmates Substance Abuse among Inmates Substance abuse can be a big problem in our criminal justice system when dealing with the number of inmates who go back to their illegal activity after being released from custody. In specific, inmates who are drug users/ abusers are to be expected to go back to drugs once they get out. Without treatment they do not have the tools, knowledge, or resources to stay clean on the outside when released. The biggest hazard for an ex inmate in the community is getting back to their old life, old friends, old contacts, and old drugs. To understand why these substance abusers are the way they are, there must be a clear emphasis on how these substances first evolved and where they originally came from. Focusing on substance abuse among inmates at the federal and state prison can be extremely different when in custody and the programs and treatment that is provided in these prisons can really have a great effect on these offenders when being released back into the community. Substance abuse can range from a small marijuana problem to a severe heroin addiction. Substance abuse is defined as overindulgence in or dependence on an addictive substance, especially alcohol or drugs. This is a huge issue in our society today and has been since dated back to the earliest age of 1794 otherwise known as the 17th century. Poverty On Children Essay Poverty Poverty is a chronic issue not just within the United States but throughout the whole world, but one thing that people tend to overlook is the effect that poverty has on childhood. Many children grow up in poverty and the effects can last for a life time. For many of these kids who grow up in these conditions the effects include poor health, a high risk for teen pregnancy, and the lack of an education. Poor health is a direct of effect of poverty, children with families with no money or that live in a country that cannot provide the right kind of services do not have access to adequate medical treatment, Psychological research has demonstrated that living in poverty has a wide range of negative effects on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our nation s children. Poverty impacts children within their various contexts at home, in school, and in their neighborhoods and communities . If a child does not have the money it is impossible to get the necessary care that it needs, I witnessed this first hand: back when I lived in Africa I wasn t much older than 3 or 4, I used to have a younger brother who got sick and it wasn t even something very serious it was just a minor cold that could have been easily treated but thanks to lack of hospitals and the lack of money in our household the minor cold become very serious and I watched as my younger brother slowly died in my mother s arms. • 18. Recurring Scaffold In The Scarlet Letter The Recurring Scaffold Through day and night, the scaffold is a place of punishment, awaiting its next victim. People pass by wondering who the next victim is going to be. This public punishment causes many to change and work to preserve their reputation. Despite this, the scaffold turns into a constant place of punishment, in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hester s love for Dimmesdale and Dimmesdale s cowardice hold significant meanings in the novel, which lead up to Dimmesdale gaining a more mature mindset. Specifically, Hester s punishment portrays her love for Dimmesdale in the first scaffold scene. Hester refuses to reveal the name of the father in spite of everyone asking her. Dimmesdale tells Hester to reveal the name by saying, Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to step down from a high place, and stand there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than to hide a guilty heart through life, (63) to explain that it is better for Hester to reveal the name of the father than to keep it to herself. By telling her not to remain silent due to any pity and tenderness for him , and telling her to allow him to step down from a high place and stand there beside her, it shows that Dimmesdale wants her to ... Krysanova at least begins with a higher leg, for example, in the doubles (I thought they were doubles) with which she began her sequence in Don Q, only decidedly lowering the leg when she switched to singles and, simultaneously, picked up more and more speed. Analysis Of Lies My Teacher Told Me For when textbook authors leave out the warts, the problems, the unfortunate character traits, and the mistaken ideas, they reduce heroes from dramatic men and women to melodramatic stick figures. Their inner struggles disappear and they become goody goody, not just merely good. (Loewen, pg. 29). Lies My Teacher Told Me is a non fiction book written by author, American sociologist, and historian, James W. Loewen. The popular belief is that schools buy the textbook that best fits the curriculum, and by following these textbooks, students are learning to the best of their ability. However, Loewen challenges this belief by providing evidence from eighteen different American history textbooks. He believes that people in history should not be depicted as heroes when they simply are not. To continue, Loewen states that students find history to be so boring since they can not relate to it or the people in it. On page 354, he even concludes his book by stating, Students will start finding history interesting when their teachers and textbook stop lying to them. There are three great taboos in textbook publishing... sex, religion, and social class. (Loewen, pg. 27). This quote from the book demonstrates that textbooks only touch upon what their authors believe students should be learning about, or in other words, the less interesting, same timeworn stories they all mostly have already learned about. History textbooks lie to students by leaving out important details about key events and significant people. Loewen s purpose in writing this book was to prove exactly that to students, and to provide them with the truth. Throughout the entire book, he decides to write about people that students are taught to consider heroes, such as; Hellen Keller, Woodrow Wilson, Christopher Columbus, and numerous more. Loewen succeeded in exposing people American s think of as heroes for whom they actually are, and also prospered in exposing textbooks by providing the truth behind the stories students are all taught. Eleven chapters have shown that textbooks supply irrelevant and even erroneous details, while omitting pivotal questions and facts in their treatments of issues... (Loewen, pg. 301). Many times there are reports of serial killers or rapists pasted all over the media. Often, news channels will assume the perpetrator has some form of mental illness, such as schizophrenia. Consequently, many people associate schizophrenia with a negative stereotype associated with violence because of what they view in the media. In the scientific study, Portrayals of Schizophrenia by Entertainment Media: A Content Analysis of Contemporary Movies, the author reviewed 41 different films made between 1990 and 2010 with at least one main character that had schizophrenia. The study found most characters engaged in dangerous or violent behaviors toward themselves or others, and nearly a third engaged in homicidal behavior (Owen). Accordingly, the negative portrayals of those with schizophrenia in movies influence the stigma among the general public that schizophrenia is dangerous. Instinctually, people want to keep themselves safe and alive in their day to day lives, so having this negative reaction to schizophrenia will make them feel safer by avoiding those with the illness. The overall view of schizophrenia from society creates a negative public stigma. As a cousin of Muhammad and a link in the direct progeny of The Prophet, his death and succession would cause much strife ad bloodshed in generations to come. Seizing power as caliph in 661 was Mu awiya b. Abu Sufyan, the first of the Umayyad family to hold this position where an Umayyad would maintain the throne for the next nearly 90 years. Throughout the time of the Umayyad rule from 661 to 750, these caliphs had a tremendous impact on not only the Arabian Peninsula, but most of the nations through North Africa, Southwestern Europe, and east into Central Asia. It s hard to measure the effects of this troubled dynasty without speculation, but it s fair to say they had both highs and many lows. The Umayyads consolidated power and eventually improved the governance of their growing empire, expanded their own economic capabilities, and also advanced Arab and Muslim culture throughout the region. However, rapid imperial expansion, tribal feuds, intra family conflict over successions, and the misconduct of some caliphs leaves some wondering if more harm or good was done during the Umayyad reign. When Mu awiya became caliph, some of the first actions he took were to begin the initial consolidations and centralizations of power (not to the extent of later Umayyad caliphs), begin more military expansions, and used his skills as a politician and statesman to hold the Muslim world together ... Social Attitudes In The Great Gatsby I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life (Fitzgerald, p.xx). This is the feeling one might feel in their lives no matter how much money they have. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby to portray the different social attitudes within the upper class. F. Scott Fitzgerald was born Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was 29 years old when The Great Gatsby was published on April 10, 1925. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald sheds light on the different personalities between the aged rich families and the modern rich families. An example of the sophistication of Gatsby are the elaborate parties he throws for the people he invites, while on the other hand, Tom and Daisy have a simple dinner with only a few people over. The emptiness one might feel at any time in their life cannot be fulfilled with money but only with other friends surrounding one. Gatsby is characterized as a very elaborate man sophisticated in his ways. He is always seen throwing extravagant parties with only the best of the best belongings in his home. One week ends his Rolls Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. ( Melville, p.39). Nick explains the bizarre lifestyle that Gatsby had with all his parties. Although, throughout Gatsby s life, the reader is able to see the emptiness he feels without Daisy. I,m just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her about that unpleasantness this afternoon. She s locked herself into her room, and if he tries any brutality she s going to turn the light out and on again. (Melville, p.144). Here, the reader recognizes the love Gatsby has for daisy. He is willing to wait all night in order to be sure of her protection. Gatsby has called off all of his parties and fired all of his servants just to spend time with daisy. As this process is sequential, once a step has been completed, the person cannot go back to a previous step not without scratching the whole project and starting from the beginning. Sacks depicts the story of his self induced disability, and the mental/physical barriers he faced within recovery, and acceptance. Sacks broke down this process into seven steps: the mountain, becoming a patient, limbo, quickening, Solvitur Ambulando, convalescence, and understanding. Along with the physical and mental barriers he faced, there were many macro/micro contextual level issues throughout the book. These issues included problems with his doctors, with his self identification, and body ego. Sacks grew up as an athletic individual, his health being a main priority throughout his life. He talks about how he grew up valuing his physical health more than anything, appreciating what hid body could do and using it to its fullest advantage. Within his physical training, he trained to climb a mountain called Hardanger Fjord. While climbing this mountain he expressed how his body was an instrument in which he played and used to create the music of his physical endurance. When he was reaching the peak of the mountain, he encountered a sign warning him of dangerous bulls on the mountain. Him thinking he was a superior being and superior to this warning, he continued his hike despite the warning. Common names that are associated with the first investigation into the phenomenon of phages are Frederick Twort, a medically trained bacteriologist from England, and Felix d Herelle, a French Canadian microbiologist. The history of phage discovery and research is so complicated that the scientific world has simply accepted referring to the discovery as the Twort d Herelle phenomenon. Twort was the first to notice and describe the characteristics of lysis associated with phage infection in 1915. However, Abedon states that it was d Herelle who identified the source of this phenomenon and coined the term bacteriophage . D Herelle was also the first to use phages therapeutically and successfully (2). Due to the limitations of the time, and the poor delivery of phages where intended, most of d Herelle s work was scrutinized throughout the scientific community. Treatments throughout the world had mixed success from the very beginning. In one trial of phage therapy in India, 1931, d Herelle observed a 90% reduction in mortality with 74 lethal outcomes in the control group and only 5 in the experimental group. However, because of the lack of reliability and other limitations that were present during the time period, phage therapy was widely dismissed by most of western medicine, especially after the introduction of pharmaceutical antibiotics in the 1940 s (Lin, Koskella and Lin). People tend to give up on dreams as soon as someone closes the door on them which leaves them with no hope. What one has done over the years, all the work and sweat, the sacrifices that person has made are gone in an instant because he can no longer endure the pain. People face challenges and sometimes hardships, but all of this is a part of life. One would live in a perfect world with a perfect family and in perfect harmony. Life would be meaningless if the world were a utopia. There would not be balance between good and bad and it would not be worth to live since there would be no challenges or fears.de Botton gives us a quote explaining what one would face if they chose the easy way out of tough times and what they would face in the end. He says: What if pleasure and displeasure were so tied together that whoever wanted to have as much as possible of one must also have as much as possible of the other... you have the choice: either as little pleasure as possible, painless in brief...or as much displeasure as possible as the price for the growth of an abundance of subtle pleasures and joys that have rarely been released yet? If you decide for the former and desire to diminish and lower the level of human pain, you also have to diminish and lower the level of their capacity for joy (215). Pleasure and difficulties are tied together and they work like a scale. On one side, we have pleasure and on the other difficulties. If one cheats in life and has too many pleasures, one will suffer hardships. However if one faces the hardships and goes through difficulties in order to be successful, one will be happy in the end. • 39. The Inherent Ethical Dilemma Of A Company The inherent ethical dilemma that presents itself in this case is whether or not it is ethical to cut corners to make a profit. The management is aware of the issue, yet continues to allow the defective drives to be sold in order to attempt to appease the company s new CEO. Is it ethical for a company to sell a defective product in order to avoid loss? The obvious IT component that lends itself to the circumstances of this case takes the form of the defective Hard Drives. However, there are many other possible IT components playing a role in the background. Such components would include an inventory management system and a defect management system, alongside App and Database servers respectively to allow these systems to function properly. Other IT components at work may include a CRM system for ensuring customer satisfaction, a POS system, possibly including hardware such as scanners for sales and returns. Desktops and laptops may also be in use by employees of the company, as well as an Intranet and Extranet to share and access information on those machines. One critical stakeholder in the case is the CEO of PrimeDrive, Mr. Stokes. • 42. empiricism Essay Empiricism Empiricism by nature is the belief that there is no knowledge without experience. How can one know what something tastes like if they have never tasted it? For example, would someone know that an apple is red if they have never actually have seen one. Someone can tell you an apple is red, but, if you never have seen one, can you really be sure? Empiricists use three anchor points in which they derive their opinions from. The first of these points is; the only source of genuine knowledge is sense experience. An easier way to understand this is to compare the mind to a clean sponge. As the sponge touches things, it takes with it, a piece of everything it touches. Without this, the sponge would remain clean and be void of anything ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another of the classic empiricists is George Berkeley (1685 1753), who believes that knowledge is possible. He believed that it was only through experience and not reason that we have knowledge of reality (p.99). The best way to describe what Berkeley was trying to say would be found in what we call today idealism. Idealism by definition is a position that maintains that ultimate reality is mental or spiritual in nature. He believed that reality is made up in many individual minds rather than one cosmic mind. Hence, when Berkeley says that we have an idea of something he is not necessarily referring to a particular concept but to the experience of our memory of the combined ideas. The third empiricist is David Hume (1711 1776) and he does not answer this question as easily as the first two have. He believes that knowledge is possible but is limited by what we cannot know about the world outside of our own experience. Since we can only know the contents of our individual minds, knowledge would and can be different for each person. Hume believes that sensory data is key for any individual in order to know something is real. For example, if two people were sitting together, one possessing the ability to see and hear and the other does not, could the one the latter really know that a car drove by and that fact that it was red? Examples like this one are why Hume ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many of these areas are the traditional, core subjects but certificates can also be obtained in areas like outdoor education, agriculture, data processing, or as a work based learning coordinator. Maintaining Certification Even after a teacher receives his/her initial certification, there is a good deal more that goes in to the process. There are many things required of them in order to maintain certification and they are always changing as new programs are put in effect and other rules invoked. For example, in July 1998, the State Board of Education increased the number of reading credits for teachers at all educational levels. (Certification educator information system, n.d.) There are different reading requirements now for each certified teacher depending on the grade level they teach. Some states are also starting to require teachers to go for their master s degree and others are offering monetary incentive to do so. Twenty states require either a master s or graduate course work for teachers by the end of their first few years on the job, up from only a few states a decade ago. He recently received an email from Terry Modotti, Vice President for Public Relations concerning the lobster retrieval in La Mosquitia, also known as the Mosquito Coast. The article states that many of the young working men are being killed and maimed to make lobsters available at cheap process to consumers in the United States. The men, known as buzos, must dive up to 130 feet for lobster, and face dangerous decompression sickness which begins with paralysis and ends in a slow death. With all of the negativity being placed upon the company as a result of this option, a bad light would be shown on the CEO and the company, especially since Gerry is relatively new. Since there are clearly more disadvantages than advantages for Gerry and Red Lobster by exercising this option, I would advise Gerry to further pursue other options. Another option with which Gerry could investigate would be for Red Lobster to offer to pay a higher price for lobster to boat companies in the Mosquito Coast in order for the divers to receive a higher salary cut. A possible advantage to this is that it would provide a better living environment for the divers. It is stated in the article that after the sacabuzos (middlemen), boat captains, and fish processors take their share of the money, what remains for the buzos is a mere $2 per pound of lobster fetched. Within a two week time period, this rate will amount to about $300. If the divers are trying to support families, $300 for two weeks is quite meager. By increasing the price that Red Lobster is willing to pay for wholesale lobster, the divers will benefit considerably due to a higher salary. Another advantage to a higher salary would mean that more individuals would be inclined to become divers, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This question is addressed in the debate that is written about in the book Science and Religion, Are they Compatible, by Daniel C. Dennett and Alvin Plantinga. Alvin Plantinga thoroughly debates the topic by covering the compatibility of Christianity and science. He continues his argument by stating the issue of naturalist and science harbor the conflict not the theism. Plantinga goes into detail how some scientific theories without the help of theism has conflict and should be considered falsifiable because of the contradictions they possess. While Alvin Plantinga does make a prominent effort to illustrate how religion and science are compatible, there are also some flaws in his well developed debate between Daniel Dennett. Alvin Plantinga begins his side of the debate by using Christianity to demonstrate the how science and religion do not possess a problem together. The items that are used to illustrate the point that is being made is the different doctrines used in the different types of Christianity, such as the Apostles Creed. There is not a conflict between the scientific fields of chemistry, physics, or the religion Christianity. He choose to use the theory of evolution to compare religion against because the theory of evolution does not state whether it is a guided or unguided process of creation.
