The Negative Impact Of Technology In Education
During a time of great technological advancement, keeping a job has become difficult throughout
the United States. Robots, computers, and other machines are now able to perform human tasks,
taking over many jobs. As economic concerns rose throughout America, former President Barack
Obama spoke about issue in his farewell address, stating that economic dislocations will result from
the high rate of automation taking over middle class positions (Gillespie). This suggests that
advancement in automation is causing job loss, which will hurt the economy of America. Because
the growth of technologyis inevitable, it will undoubtedly affect future generations. Battling the
negative effects and spreading the benefits of automation starts with addressing the skills and
qualities needed in the workforce. To help future generations battle automation effectively, there
needs to be changes within the educational system, teaching future students skills and emphasizing
qualities that cannot be outdone or emulated by a machine.
Technology changed the way we learn, but it did not change what we learn. As technology
advanced, the economy changed, with some jobs and skills becoming obsolete. Ending automation
starts with changing what it is we are learning. Education provides a background for the future of
many students; however, the information students are learning is not putting them in the right
position to battle automation. In his article, Companies Need to Pay to Train Potential

How Does American Culture Affect France
Introduction:
France, one of the oldest countries in Europe, has been the home to many languages since the dawn
of its creation. As one of the most influential European nations, France has successfully spread its
culture and language throughout the world. While to most it seems France is a simple,
homogenous country filled with nothing more than French custom, its history tells another story.
Centuries prior to the French Revolution, France was a land mass occupied by many people of
different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. During the French Revolution of 1789, the French
state begin to develop into a population driven by the government s attempts to unify the citizens of
France. This process of unification was in no fashion a cordial ... Show more content on

The European immigrants are members of the Caucasian ethnicity and most commonly are
practicing Christians, a great deal of whom are catholic. Even other Christian minorities tend to
blend into the French lifestyle because all Christians tends to celebrate the same religious
holidays. Generally speaking, most European countries share similar traditions and perspectives in
comparison to that of France. The large number of similarities between Europeans allows for them
to quickly and comfortably assimilate to the standard French lifestyle. Even when it comes to
politics, European immigrants can simply become fluent in the language and would have little
trouble gaining support from the French people. Speaking of fluency in French, since a fairly
large amount of European countries already speak Romance languages such as Spanish or Italian,
it would be a lot easier adjusting languages as well. They might even already learned French in
school in their native country; French is a language associated with good social and economic
standing and thus is taught as a second or third language in many European

An Analysis Of Consider The Lobster By David Foster Wallace
In his article Consider the Lobster , David Foster Wallace uses the Maine Lobster Festival as a
medium for his argument regarding the ethics of eating lobster. Wallace frames his article as a
conversation just to get people thinking, but a deeper look at his rhetoric shows that he is arguing
against the inhumanities of eating lobster, while doing everything he can to avoid sounding like he
is taking a stance. Wallace starts his piece by describing the Maine Lobster Festival, he provides
some background details regarding the event, but mostly it is description of what he saw when he
was there. He even states that describing is what he is doing with your assigned correspondent saw
it all, accompanied by one girlfriend and both his own... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, then he goes into the history of the lobster. He shares fact after fact about how Maine s
earliest lobster industry was based around a dozen seaside canneries in the 1840 s (Wallace 55),
and that the name lobster comes from the Old English loppestre (Wallace 55). At first these facts
are interesting, but upon rereading the article one may wonder, what does this have to do with the
argument? The answer is, nothing. These facts are in no way essential to adding context to Wallace
s moral argument, but rhetorically they serve the purpose to distract and retain. If right after page
one Wallace started criticizing eating lobster, he runs the risk of ostracizing some of his carnivorous
audience, but by just narrating and sharing facts, he delays this argument and continues to capture
the interest of readers as they wonder where he is going with this.
Once Wallace finally does reach his argument, he continues to present himself like he doesn t want
to offend any reader by tip toeing around making a claim. He starts his argument off with so then
here is a question (Wallace 57), both continuing his conversational tone and trying to frame this as
a discussion not a statement on morality. Then at the end of the article he talks directly to the
audience saying, I m not trying to give you a PETA like screed here just trying, rather, to work out
and articulate some of the troubling questions

Rhy Lofgren Research Papers
A Survivor Private George Washington Elmer Lofgren served as an infantryman in Company E,
117th Regiment, 30th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. He went into action on
September 20, 1918 on the Somme Front in the Battle of the Hindenburg Line.9 As significant
reinforcements from the United States reached Europe; they joined the Allies 1918 offensive. By
the time Elmer arrived on the battlefield, the Allies had already pushed the Germans back to their
last stronghold, the Siegfried Stellung, which the Allies called the Hindenburg Line.10 The fresh
troops from America joined the attack on these fortifications and sustained extremely high
casualty rates as they crossed no man s land through devastating machine gun and small arms
fire. Elmer, however, survived the slaughter. Elmer s son and daughter in law, Lyle and Elizabeth
Liz Lofgren, have an extensive website where I found a section in which Elmer relates an
account of his experiences on the battlefield. A brief excerpt follows. The reported 7.1 percent
casualty rate of the United States military forces mobilized for the Great War pales by comparison
to the death and suffering witnessed by Elmer.12 Almost 89 percent of the men with whom Elmer
served, either lost their lives or sustained wounds that left them incapable of walking off the field of
battle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sports Are So Personal, Athletes
Normal people from all over the world can challenge themselves to become stronger, faster, and
push to work harder, sports are a means to get oneself there.. One of the nice things about sports
is that each [person] can express [themselves] at [their] own level (2) and in their own way.
Because action sports are so personal, athletes love what they do. At the end of the day extreme
athletes, and those that are physically active, feel more accomplished and they desire to get
back out there again and again because they love to explore and express themselves in their life
style choices. If people never had a desire to become more, imagine how boring the world would
be; nevertheless, because of action athletically minded people great changes are made daily.
Athletes generally do have thrill seeking personalities, says Frank Farley, a professor of
psychology at Philadelphia s Temple University, who coined the term Type T to describe such
people. But many Type Ts are the opposite of reckless, Farley says. Those who live prepare for
their sports, he says. They don t want to die. They want the challenges, the creativity, and the
risky experiences. So they prepare. Type Ts do push the envelope, not just in sports but in
science and the arts, Farley says. And while some Type Ts push it in negative ways, such as by
taking drugs or committing crimes, many others are society s creators and innovators. If we didn t
have these people, we d be back in the cave, Farley

Effect Of Aa Content On The Swelling Ratio Of Hydrogel
Effect of AA content on the swelling ratio of hydrogel
Fig. 3b shows the effect of AA on the Q value of hydrogel. With increasing concentration of AA,
the Q values of hydrogels increased and then decreased. When AA amount was more than 7 g, the
Q values of hydrogels decreased because when the concentration of AA was high, the collision
probability between monomers would increase, thus increasing the graft length of sulfonated
cellulose, favoring the formation of a polymeric network at higher Q values of hydrogels. HIGh AA
concentrations would lead to self polymerization and lower swelling ratio. The best ratio between
sulfonated cellulose and monomer was determined as 1:7.
3.5 The effect of KPS on the swelling ratio of hydrogel
Fig. 3c shows the effect of KPS on the Q value of hydrogel. The Q values of the hydrogels
increased, followed by a decrease with increasing amount of KPS. The maximum Q value was
observed at 2% KPS, because polymerization was initiated by the free radicals generated from KPS
under heat. More initiators would produce more free radicals that can enhance grafting efficiency.
Therefore, the hydrogel formation was enhanced and Q increased. However, too much initiator
would produce too many free radicals, thus increasing the collision probability between free
radicals, eventually terminating the reaction. The generated short graft chains would be difficult to
form a 3D network, decreasing the Q value.

Analysis Of The Movie Sea World Of Hurt
Sea World of Hurt
When I was little, I used to always want to go out and visit Marineland. At the tender age of 5 I
was mesmerized Free Willy, the kid s film about an orca who is freed into the wild by a little
boy. I was amazed by the creature on the screen every time I watched the film, it never got old.
Of course at my age I did not quite understand why Willy had to be freed from the seemingly nice
pool he was allowed to be living in. It was what made me want to visit Marineland to see one of
these guys up close. I visited for the first time when I was about 10, and I do not remember
everything but what I do remember is that I was more enticed with the rides and the gift shop
than I was with their orcas. I used to question why, but now I get it. The orca we saw was
underwhelming, because of the sheer sadness it emanated from the other side of the glass where it
swam around in its small living area. It was not Willy, the fun orca from my childhood. It was the
stark reality of a combination of solitude and mistreatment. I learned recently that the orca in Free
Willy was released from captivity 9 years after the film came out in 1993, and it died in the wild
after only a year because it was too dependant on us. We are the ones that created this mess. This
mess of literal killer whales, of poor living conditions of these animals, the way we have ripped
them from their natural habitat and put them up for show. SeaWorldplays a big role in this business.

Alka Seltzer Tablets
Percent by Mass of NaHCO3 in Alka Seltzer Tablets Introduction Determining the percent by
mass of sodium bicarbonate in baking soda is important because it demonstrates the relationship
between reactants and products. In this specific experiment, it demonstrates the reaction
between a base and an acid. It also reveals the effect that a limiting reactant can have on the
product that is produced in a reaction. Alka Seltzer tablets aim to neutralize stomach acid and
thereby reduce stomach pain, as well as other painful symptoms. Alka Seltzer Original tablets
contain three active ingredients: citric acid, aspirin, and sodium bicarbonate. When added to
stomach acid, the citric acid and the sodium bicarbonate react to form carbonic acid, water and
carbon dioxide in the form of a gas. The gaseous carbon dioxide produces the fizz that is
characteristic of Alka Seltzer.1 However, not all of the sodium bicarbonate reacts with the citric
acid, as there is excess NaHCO3. The excess NaHCO3 is what works to neutralize stomach acid.
When Alka Seltzer reacts with acetic acid (vinegar) and water as opposed to stomach acid,
carbon dioxide, water, and sodium acetate are produced. The excess NaHCO3 reacts with the
acetic acid just as it does with hydrochloric acid. Experimental First, a 100 mL graduated cylinder
was obtained and filled with 35 mL of water. A pipet was used to attain a more accurate amount of
liquid. The water was then poured into a beaker, which was weighed on an analytical balance. Next,
an Alka Seltzer tablet was obtained and the weight measured using the same balance the weight of
the beaker was measured on. When both masses were recorded, the tablet was dropped into the
water. The liquid was swirled to allow for the tablet to dissolve completely. After the fizzing had
stopped, the beaker was once again weighed and the mass was recorded. Each step was repeated
seven more times for a total of eight trials. However, with each trial the liquids added to the beaker
changed. In each new trial, an additional 5 mL of vinegar was added and 5 mL of water was taken
away. Thus, beaker one had 0 mL of vinegar and 35 mL of water; beaker 2 had 5 mL of vinegar
and 30 mL of water; beaker 3 had 10 mL of vinegar and 25 mL

Optimal Dh And Temperature Conditions Lab Report
Optimal pH and Temperature Conditions Comparative studies show that the optimum pH of
LDH from rabbit muscle ranges from pH 6.2 to 7.8 [6]. A pH rate profile graph in a study by
Fritz [6] reflects the results obtained in Figure 1, where the optimum pH was found to be 7.5 for
LDH extracted from rabbit muscle. This is further supported by the optimal pH of rabbit muscle
LDH obtained by another study [7], in which the pH is determined to be 7.5. Thus the results
obtained in Figure 1 fall consistent with literature values. In a study by Buhl et al., the optimal
temperature of LDH from skeletal muscle of aa human was 37oC[4], suggesting that denaturation
characteristics of the enzyme would be observed beyond this temperature condition [1].... Show

The low Vmax could be due to an incomplete reaction. However, despite the large difference in
Vmax between experimental and literature values, Figure 3 reflects similar data obtained in
similar studies [9]. Michaelis Menten graphs depicted by Figure 4 and Figure 5 show that all
concentrations of oxalic acid (0M, 0.01M and 0.03M) and oxamic acid (0M, 0.0200M and
0.0600M) ) seemingly saturate at the highest lactate concentration which was 95mM. In both
figures, LDH saturates the fastest in the absence of inhibitors, followed by 0.01M oxalic acid
and 0.0200M oxamic acid, and 0.03M oxalic acid and 0.0600M oxamic acid having the slowest
reaction rate respectively shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5. These results reflect the Michaelis
Menten graphs reproduced by experiments under similar conditions as explained by Powers et
al [9]. As predicted, Km and Vmax values obtained from the Michaelis Menten graphs in Figure
4 and Figure 5 do not correspond with Km and Vmax values obtained in the Lineweaver Burk
plot of LDH in Figure 3. The Vmax obtained in Figure 4 and Figure 5 were both 10.6ВµM/min in
the absence of inhibitor whereas the Vmax in the absence of inhibitor was 0.34 ВµM/min in
Figure 3. Lineweaver Burk plots allow for an accurate derivation of an enzyme s Km and Vmax
through an extrapolation of reciprocal values as opposed to the Michaelis Menten graph which
indicates a direct correlation of an enzyme s substrate

Pros And Cons Of An Enrolled Agent (EA)
An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a tax professional authorized by the U.S. Government to represent
taxpayers in matters concerning the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). EAs must pass an
examination demonstrating ability or have sufficient experience as an IRS employee, as well as
passing a background check, before receiving the designation. Enrolled agents first appeared in
1884 because of issues arising with Civil War loss claims.
EAs are not required to get a college degree. An individual with five years of taxation experience
with the IRS may apply to become an enrolled agent without taking the exam. In addition, they must
complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years. Certified public accountants
and attorneys may serve as enrolled agents without taking the exam. ... Show more content on

Why Do I Like Jack The Ripper Essay
Why do I like jack the ripper? That is a very hard question. It s so many reasons. Jack was a
mystery. I find it so fascinating how he killed five women, but didn t get caught. London police
used all the resources they had, and he didn t get caught. That s fascinating. Since the first murder
found place in 1888, many authors have made stories about Jack. And it has been made stories in
many different styles. From biography s, to essays, to crime novels. Therefore I find it difficult to
write about just one authors writing style. So I have decided to write about the characteristic from
the authors who have made stories about Jack.

Because it s rather fun to see people going insane trying to figure it out. I don t want to give too
much information. But I am against the political views on refuges. And one way to protest, it s to
kill the people that are let into our country. I am not mistaken, when I am saying that maybe half

needed to go against the refuges. And I don t regret. I would have done the same over again. And
I am not a psychopath. I am just a Norwegian. A Norwegian that have turned the bright
Konnerud, into a dark city. A Norwegians that have showed you, what the politicians can expect
when they accept refuges. It s going to be fights. Between example Odin s soldiers, and Allah s
soldiers. It is going to be a war. It is going to be a nightmare. It is going to be hell. So do something

heard the sound of every surrounding; for instance, in minute 1:04 when she was on the metro,
you can only heard people talking and the sound of the train. The sound effect used in minute

Large Trailer Analysis
Unfortunately, collisions involving large trucks and passenger vehicles are all too common on the
roads throughout North Carolina. In fact, the state s Department of Transportation reported that
there were more than 3,400 accidents involving semitrailers in 2013 alone. Due to the size
differences between the vehicles, such collisions often result in serious injuries, or death, for the
occupants of passenger vehicles. While not all trucking crashes can be avoided, there are steps
that drivers can take to reduce their odds of being involved in these types of accidents. Use
caution when passing It is obvious to most motorists that tractor trailers are much larger and longer
than the average passenger vehicle. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety points out
that it can take drivers a half mile to safely pass these large trucks. Therefore, it is... Show more

As a result, truckers may have to merge into the lanes to their left in order to make some right

vehicles and the curb or other automobiles. This may help avoid serious semitrailer accidents.
Avoid suddenly slowing or stopping According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, fully
loaded tractor trailers can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Due to their size and weight, these
vehicles require significantly more stopping distance than passenger cars, trucks and SUVs. In
ideal conditions, large trucks traveling at 55 mph need about 430 feet to stop. Consequently,
truckers may not be able to adjust and stop in time to avoid a collision if drivers suddenly slow or
stop in front of them. Thus, it is recommended that people be attentive to the road conditions and
take precautions to avoid unexpectedly stopping when driving in front of a semitrailer. Stay out of

The Conch Shell In Lord Of The Flies
According to the merriam webster dictionary, the definition of symbolism; artistic imitation or
invention that is a method of revealing or suggesting immaterial, ideal, or otherwise intangible
truth or states. In the book the Lord of the flies, various things are used as symbols to show a
truth or some type of relationship. One of the biggest symbolic things in the book was the conch
shell. The conch shell was originally founded on a waves upwash during the very first stages of
the book. Just like items had a certain meaning, color had symbolic meanings as well. The color of
the shell was creamy white which symbolizes; purity, innocence, fairness, and honor. The conch
shell in Lord of the Flies begins as a symbolfor authority, later on it becomes disconnected
between the boys, and concludes as being ignored and basically destroyed. As the boys are
stranded on the deserted island, in order to survive they copy civilization just like back in
England. Authority such as rules and a head chief was much needed. In their quest of the
finding such similarities, they come across the conch shell creamy white by the ocean. The
group of boys take it as a symbol of authority inside the group. Ralph, the main character and the
boy who originally found the conch blew it to assemble the group of boys. Minutes go by and
Ralph is picked due to the fact that the conch is in his possession. The group of boys used
meetings as a way to talk about problems. In fact, the process of this to

Free Market Economy
The United States is known to operate in a free market economy. In other words, the economy is
based solely on supply and demand with little to no government control. In reality, however, the
United States has various government regulations on our country s market. The amount of
regulation that is necessary is a continuing debate among politicians and economists to this day.
Some would say that the key to a successful market economy is to remove government
restrictions in order to force businesses to provide superior products and services at affordable
prices. Yet, others assert that government regulations are essential in protecting consumers,
stemming from the assumption that corporations are not always looking out for the public s
interest. Of course, there are various advantages and disadvantages associated with each level of
regulation, however it is safe to assume that there must be a balance between an unregulated free
market and a regulated economy in order to protect people and the environment and allow the
economy to flourish. Advantages of a Free Market Economy A free market is driven by individual
innovation and the concept that hard work and initiative will be rewarded with success. Because of
the ingenuity factor, there is plenty of competition in the market place. Therefore, the rivalry
between companies provides the best possible product to the customer at the best price. In addition,
this gives consumers the ability to let their voices be heard, since

Pinpoint Accuracy
Technical Perfection can be achieved during workout if the services of a certified personal trainer
is acquired by an individual. Often we think that we are providing our best inputs during our
workout sessions but the expected results are not met. This can be because of the prevalence of
technical glitches which we cannot voluntarily figure out. For instance, how much or how little the
knee should be bent and what weights to exactly bear at what time is not something that we can
accurately estimate with our restricted knowledge. A certified personal trainer will guide an
individual in such a situation by ensuring technical perfection, and as a result, satisfactory results
can be achieved in double quick time.

Moralism In The Cask Of Amontillado
Looking at The Cask of Amontillado one can usually see the issue and theme of Montresor s

morality of his actions. His uneasy inner voice has turned into a sort of retaliation for his

My Experience At School And Outside Of School
To you, I, Dora Su, may not seem like a very special person just because I am not perfect, but I
am definitely limited edition. For sure, I am not your typical teenager; in fact, I am the person to
learn high level mathematics and science in my free time rather than the person who would play
video games such as League of Legends or text and socialize in their free time. Time to me is very
valuable and I enjoy spending this time learningand spending it wisely while having bits of fun. As

For instance, I tend to try out for every sports team at school despite not even being decent at the
sport and not making it, I am not afraid to take on the challenge and making a fool of myself. At
school, I have joined the cross country team every single year with improvements each year; in
grade 4, I received 93rd place and this year I have been training hard, not missing a single
practice so the hard work paid off with my 1st place at areas and 22nd at regionals despite a fall.
Running at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon 5k event is also something I want to do next year.
Additionally, I participate and place in track and field each year, making it to areas and

planning to start a Math and Science Club at school with my friends. Badminton is the sport I
enjoy outside of school as I play in a competitive team outside of school around 5 times a week;
this develops my competitive personality, but also builds my sportsmanship. I have also

Goffman s Theory Of Social Stigma Essay
3.Theoretical Framework Erving Goffman s theory of social stigma (1963) will be used as a
guideline for the thesis and will act as a basis for further research on personal and perceived
depression stigma. Stigma is a deeply discrediting attribute which has a strong relationship to
stereotype (Goffman, 1963) Goffman defines stigma as a gap between virtual social identity and
actual social identity and states that stigmata are bodily signs which deviate from the norm
(Goffman, 1963). According to him, three different types of stigma exist: (1) physical deformities,
(2) blemishes of individual character and (3) tribal stigma. (1)Physical deformities: abominations of
the body (2)Blemished of individual character: weak will, domineering or unnatural passions,
treacherous and rigid beliefs, dishonesty, mental disorder, imprisonment, addiction, alcoholism,
homosexuality, unemployment, suicidal attempts, radical political behavior (3)Tribal stigma: race,
nation, religion Furthermore, Goffman introduces the reader to two main groups of characters in
his logic: the normal and the stigmatized and classifies the stigmatized again into the discredited
and the discreditable. The discredited show an obvious discrepancy between their actual and their
virtual social identity, while the discreditable do not immediately show their differentness.
Additionally, the reader gets introduced to the terms (1) social information, (2) symbols, (3) status
symbols and (4) stigma symbols

Theme Of Love In The Raven
What does a stereotypical raven symbolize? In The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe creates a dreary
mood through the usage of subject matter, rhyme and meter, symbolism and word choice. His
long lost Lenore who died at a young age turned his bright life into a dark gloomy life. Edgar
Allan Poe creates a long lost love subject matter in The Raven. Lenore, the main characters young
beautiful wife in the prime of her life died. The man was very sad and dreary that he lost his
young Lenore. He said For the rare and radiant maiden for whom the angels named Lenore
Nameless here for evermore.(2) The main character lost his love and a young age. The theme or
subject matter is long lost love just for this reason. One day a raven showed up at the man s
house. The man is asking the raven many questions about his wife who passed. The man is not
getting the news he is looking for, he says, Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost
Lenore!(4) Edgar is so curious about his long lost love and really wants to her again. He has
been curious about his Lenore since she died and has also done nothing since she died. The man
was so fixated on Lenore that when he was not hearing what he wanted to he got very sad and
disgusted about his love. He is not hearing the things he wants about his long lost love lenore.
Edgar Allan Poe uses rhyme and meter to emphasize the darkness and gloominess of the poem. He
is a very fearful and curious man at this point he is wondering what will ever

The Use Of Identity Experimentation By Robert Graves
1. Homosexuality is illegal in over seventy five countries all over the world. I personally grew up
thinking I was a mistake for being attracted to girls, and as a direct result of institutionalized
homophobia, I suffer through countless micro aggressions every day. When Robert Graves was
my age, he survived similar emotional trials due to being attracted to boys in the brutal British
boarding school environment, which is difficult if not impossible to recover from. Today,
however, he is known instead for his war service and prolific writings, and in his memoir, the
soldiery is the main showcase. His portrayal of identity experimentation can be interpreted as an
example for how homosexualitywas and is treated. Graves autobiography is actually a testament to
the subtler forms of bigotry. Within the Charterhouse community, Graves provides examples of his
reactions to homophobia, as well as the later culmination of that internalized bigotry. As a queer
person, he struggles with the harmful power dynamic of predatory teachers and older boys, and as
an intellectual, he expresses the similar struggle of a desire to be accepted which are often the
same assertions still on the lips of modern queer activists.
2. Graves description of early, potentially traumatizing, experiences with women are essentially his
preamble to, and justification of, his later male love, seemingly subscribing to the idea of a
situational sexuality. At ten years old, he went with his sisters to their

Corporate Restructure
Corporate Restructuring Motives and Methods
Corporate restructuring is one of the most complex and fundamental phenomena that management
confronts. Each company has two opposite strategies from which to choose: to diversify or to
refocus on its core business. While diversifying represents the expansion of corporate activities,
refocus characterizes a concentration on its core business. From this perspective, corporate
restructuring is reduction in diversification. This involves a significant change in one or more of
the following * Pattern of ownership and control * Composition of liability * Asset mix of the firm.
It is a comprehensive process by which a company can consolidate its business operations and

campaign to reposition the company with consumers.
Corporate Restructuring entails a range of activities including financial restructuring and
organization restructuring.
Financial Restructuring
Financial restructuring is the reorganization of the financial assets and liabilities of a corporation in
order to create the most beneficial financial environment for the company. Just about every
business goes through a phase of financial restructuring at one time or another. In some cases, the
process of restructuring takes place as a means of allocating resources for a new marketing
campaign or the launch of a new product line. When this happens, the restructure is often viewed as
a sign that the company is financially stable and has set goals for future growth and expansion.
Need For Financial Restructuring
Process of financial restructuring may be undertaken as a means of eliminating waste from the
operations of the company. The restructuring effort may find that two divisions or departments of
the company perform related functions and in some cases duplicate efforts. In some cases, financial
restructuring is a strategy that

This essay is aimed to critically appraise the article about comparing the effect of glucosamine and
glucosamine with alendronate in symptomatic relieve of degenerative knee joint disease (Hamid
Reza Arti Mohammad Ebrahim Azemi, 2012, p. 87 92). The study talked about the Degenerative
Joint Disease (DJD) or osteoarthritis, which is the most common destructive jointdisease and causes
of chronic disability in human beings. Osteoarthritis is often caused by aging, frequent use of knee
joints or obesity. People with osteoarthritis are normally treated by glucosamine. On the other hand,
alendronate is used to treat osteoporosis. People with osteoporosis will have brittle or fragile bones
due to deficiency in calcium or vitamin D. As both osteoarthritis and osteoporosis have higher
chances of being found in elderly patients, it might not be an unusual thing for them to exist
together in the patient at the same time. Combining glucosamine and alendronate together in the
treatment may bring out unexpected therapeutic benefits. The objective of the study is to find out
the differences between the effects of glucosamine alone and combination between glucosamine
and alendronate administration in relieving knee degeneration. The study hypothesised that
combination of glucosamine and alendronate will be more effective in treating knee degeneration.
To test the efficacy of glucosamine, a double blind randomised controlled trial (RCT) was set up. A

Plato
Society is currently arguing over how to address the issue of violence against homosexuals. Many
educators and activists suggest that the educational systems nationwide address the issues of sexual
orientation in classrooms to combat stereotypes and myths that lead to violence against

It is hard to define exactly which issues are most important to focus on and discuss in curricula.
Lesbian and gay studies means many things to people, at different times, in different countries. In
fact, it often seems easier to define what it is not rather than what it is, (Weeks, 2000, pp. 2).
Overall the issues that should be included in curricula, in some form at all grade levels, is the lives
of GLBITTQ people, including their identities, their experiences of oppression, and their struggles
for recognition. In addition, curriculum should include ways to live with these differences.
Furthermore, the rights for GLBITTQ community should be discussed, especially the right for all
people to be treated equally and fairly. Curriculum should lead students to question the heterosexual
norm that is presented in this culture and how that makes other people feel who are different.
All teachers should be educated about queer issues before incorporating them into their classes. As
any other subject in schools, students should be taught the most basic foundations of queer theory
and then provided with more information as the years progress. In elementary education, the
fundamental queer issue that should be taught is that our society is filled with diverse cultures and
families and it is important to include and treat

A Late Summer Night For An Alaskan Vacation
It s a late summer night in Florida, but Kate, age twenty seven, needs resort wear for an Alaskan
vacation. Six years ago, in 2010, she would have waited for tomorrow afternoon and headed
straight for the local mall. However, today she starts shopping from her bedroom by launching an
online chat with her personal stylist Haley, from Trunk Club. The stylist recommends several
items, superimposing photos of them onto Kate s avatar. Kate rejects a few of the items that her
stylist suggests, but quickly switches to another browser tab to research the customer reviews and
prices elsewhere. After a minute or two, Kate finds better deals on a couple of the items at another
retailer, and orders them. She buys one item from Trunk Club online and then schedules a time for
tomorrow to drive to the Trunk Club lounge nearest her, for the in stock items she wants to try on.
This scenario is fictional, but it s neither as fanciful nor as futuristic as some may think. All the
technology Kate used is already accessible to the public and within a matter of years, much of it
will be ubiquitous. With an abundance of quick information, near perfect price transparency, and the
convenience of twenty four hour availability, online shoppingseems to be a dream for many
consumers. However, it s feeling more like a nightmare for many conventional retailers, those
worried about security, and some tree huggers .For centuries, people have marked in their minds

Analysis Of Marija Gimbutas s The Living Goddess
Archeology like any other science is prone to uncertainty and a couple mistakes. However, when
an idea is presented as a fact, it is outrageous, nothing is completely definite and everything is
basically a theory. Marija Gimbutas was very passionate about the Goddess, in The Living
Goddess, she says, The role of the father in prehistoric antiquity was either not fully understood or
not as highly valued as that of the mother, (112). Nevertheless, the way that she presented her
argument was not convincing. Gimbutas acted as though she knew the history of a civilization
just by looking at the artifacts she found, she used her own research as her evidence to support
her claims, and lastly she is guilty of letting her own ideas cloud her judgment. Throughout her
work, Gimbutas appears to be omniscient claiming to know that there was a civilization in Old
Europe that was matrifocal, peaceful and offered its citizens a higher quality of life. She paves the
road for her peaceful utopia by defining the word civilization through the eyes of an archeologist,
Historians have assumed that civilization implies a hierarchical political and religious organization,
warfare, a class stratification, and a complex division of labor, (Gimbutas, The Civilization viii).
Once she introduced the barbaric society that revolved around males she contrasts this by saying
that gynocentric cultures did not revolve around petty superficial things that mattered in a
patriarchal society (Gimbutas, The

insulting painting of Lenin, whom they put on a pedestal. After being expelled from the group,
Dali continued showing works with the Surrealists, as Brenton and Thirion, two major leaders of
the group expressed they needed him for the survival of their movement because his new
methods had transformed the Surrealists and their art. However he was also continually
transforming and moved into his classic period, and becoming more famous everyday. His
appearance and the publicity he gained in America all landed him in an abundance of wealth, and
he lived accordingly, many times referring to himself as a snob, however Dali had inadvertently
pulled himself from a middle class standing in Spanish society to the upper class in America of

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three of the most distinct and well known religions in the
world. They have persisted for generation upon generation and have by far the largest number of
followers of all religions in the world. They also share some interesting similarities in their
foundational stories. Where did these faiths originate, and why do they share many aspects while

Here, over the course of two chapters, Bhakos discusses two reservations put into one: we should
not identify Ishmael and Isaac or Sarah and Hagar as separate lineages, with some being worse
than others. What Bakhos is trying to explain is that over time, Judaism and Christianity have
placed distinctions between Isaac/Ishmael and Sarah/Hagar, effectively forming a way of
thinking that places some people over others, while in Islam both sets of people are treated more
or less as equals. That is not the case in Islam, however, where both sons, along with their
mothers live in the abode of Abraham, (Bakhos 153). In Judaism and Christianity, Isaac is the
sole important figure while Ishmael becomes somewhat irrelevant after Hagar is cast out by
Abraham on the orders of Sarah. Both of these religions also portray Hagar as, at first, an
insolent woman who looks down on Sarah because she is the one giving birth to the first son of
Abraham, but they both later come back and give her a much more docile role after being
spoken to by the angel in the wilderness. Other texts from these same religions, however, disagree
with this and even go so far as to say Sarah was never even mad at Hagar, rather, Ishmael was the
one that caused her to throw them out. Regardless, however, these two religions place very clear
distinctions between the four people and effectively make two distinct branches, intimating that
some people in the family line are better than others. I do not agree at all with this belief and I
agree with Bakhos in that it should not be something people put their faith into. While it is true
that all four people have different roles and have varying levels of importance to Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam, I believe that the view of Islam that all these individuals should be regarded

The female reproductive system is composed of the breasts and a number of systems in the lower
torso. The ovaries are where a number of crucial things happen. The ovaries are two identical
glands that are almond shaped, about one inch in length and located in the pelvic cavity. The
ovaries produce the primary female hormones, estrogen and progesterone. As well, the ovaries
produce the female gamete or egg. All the rest if the organs related too reproduction are all centred

Outwardly the menstrual cycle is demonstrated by bleeding which lasts three to seven days. Two
different hormones (luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone), which are produced in
the pituitary gland are what then stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. The
menstrual cycle can be broken down into three main phases.
After puberty every month one egg in one of the two ovaries matures and is then sent out to the
fallopian tubes. There are two fallopian tubes, one connected to each ovary. The fallopian tubes
meet in the middle in a structure called the uterus. Each month when the egg is released from the
ovaries, which is called ovulation, hair like projections in the fallopian tubes help push the egg
along the tube to its destination. The fallopian tubes are not directly connected to the ovaries so
when an egg is released it is caught by a fimbria, which facilitates getting the egg from the ovaries
to the fallopian tubes. The egg is also pushed along the fallopian tubes by contractions in conduction
with the cilia (3).
The uterus cavity varies on size depending on whether the female has given birth before or not,
but the size of a uterus for a woman who has never given birth is about the size of a pear. The
uterus is located behind the bladder and in front of the bowel, the uterus is situated at an angle that

LAN is mainly used in private organisations such as college or university. More or less everyone
uses wireless router at home these days and the user is able to connect between 5 10 devices
wirelessly. The user can share the broadband or the connection with ADSL by using Ethernet

size of the organisation. Smaller LANs are easier to manage. The users need to be careful when
using larger LANs and need to make sure that the network within it is transmitted efficiently. The
user can increase the number of computers connected by using routers and switches. This ensures
that the network administrator has higher level of control over the network. IEEE 802.3 is the

powerful than the Shah himself. Mosaddeq vowed to nationalize Iranian oil and free Iran from
foreign control by the West. When Mosaddeq tried to do so, the British claimed that he was

The Political Motivations For English Imperialism
1. The political motivations for English imperialism were made on country that is craving to
succeed in power, to increase their land, to have an armed force, to achieve respect by
captivating colonies, and increase pride and security countrywide. The Pilgrims left England to
North America because they were seeking freedom from religious oppression from King James
I. Even though most of them died during the cross over, the few that made it settle very quickly
with the help of the Native Americans. These groups of people were very religious and wanted
to keep their faith alive. Their leaders in England did not tolerate it so they decide to leave
England to a place where can freely express their religion. (U.S History, 2008 2016) 2. The social
pressures that contributed to English colonization of North America are the fact that the population
in England doubled. There were to many mouths to feed and very little food, clothing and other
goods that led to inflation. Since there were so many people looking for job the wages fell
drastically which led the laborers in poverty. Landowners raised their rents, apprehended the lands
where the peasants occupied commonly which resulted on them being homeless and landless. So
they had no choice but to live in the streets. The officials finally realize that them leaving to North
America would alleviate the surplus of population in England. So that is why they migrated to
North America to improve their circumstances. (Norton, 2015)

Latin Americ The United States Essay
). Another myth is that Latin America is behind the U.S. However, government power and
initiatives have also disproved this. While the U.S. has never had a female president or even vice
president, four Latin American countries have female leaders: Brazil s Dilma Roussef, Costa Rica s
Laura Chinchilla, Argentina s Cristina FernГЎndez de Kirchner and Chile s Michelle Bachelet.
(Weiss, L., 2014). Another stereotype is that immigrants are taking money away from the United
States. Despite the speculation about the financial cost of immigrants, Norris Tirrell (2002)
reported that immigrants cost Florida a mere $25 a year more than the average resident and that
undocumented residents brought in more than $200 a year per person to Texas.
INTERSECTION OF RACE, RACISM AND WHITE PRIVELAGE AMONG LATIN AMERICAN
IMMIGRANTS
Latinos have often been described as; brown skinned people from Latin America. No matter where
in Latin America one originates, all agree that if one is perceived as white they are seen as
benefitting most. On the other hand, those who are seen as white are often discriminated against
often because they are not believed to be Latino which can be very painful as it looks to erase
their Latin roots. Many Latin communities believe the Eurocentric Beauty Standards which
indicate those with straight hair, pale skin, slim noses, and light colored eyes are praised for the
ways that they look above everyone else. Benefitting from these standards is seen as white privilege

Compare And Contrast Synoptic Gospels
Mark is the best storyteller of the synoptic gospels. The synoptic gospels, Mark, Matthew, and
Luke in the new testament of the Bible are similar stories, sequence, and wording. The book of
Matthew and Luke displays a viewpoint of the stories as told in the book of Mark. The three
synoptic gospels stand in contrast to the book of John whose content is distinct. The role of
miracles plays a critical role in the New Testament of the Bible in religious traditions in Christianity.
The synoptic gospelsreflects unique differences regarding miracles of healing as told in Mark in
contrast to Matthew and Luke. I plan to demonstrate the differences in two synoptic gospels by
comparing and contrasting them to two miracles of healing in the book of Mark.
The two miracles I will explore will include healing a woman of hemorrhages and a man with
leprosy. The first miracle I will explore will be healing in the gospel of Mark. In Mark, Chapter 5,
verses 25 34, he quotes, Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for
twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and
she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in
the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well
Immediately her hemorrhages stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in

How do they work together?
It is not always virtual reality vs. augmented reality they do not always operate independently of one
another, and in fact are often blended together to generate an even more immersing experience. For
example, haptic feedback which is the vibration and sensation added to interaction with graphics is
considered an augmentation. However, it is commonly used within a virtual reality setting in order
to make the experience more lifelike through touch.
Virtual reality and augmented reality are great examples of experiences and interactions fueled by
the desire to become immersed in a simulated land for entertainment and play, or to add a new

Hall of Fame Steroids Paper

ENG 102
5 December, 2012
Hall of Famer? Major League Baseball (MLB) has always been one of the worst offenders of
players engaging in questionable behavior. With the MLB featuring as a key example in the
steroid debate, how can the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) electors decide
which players are eligible to be inducted into the Hall of Fame? Located in Cooperstown, New
York, the National Baseball Hall of Fame is in anticipation for new members. An election is held
each year, no later than January 15th, for players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The
electors from BBWAA consist of retired baseball players, which have been active writers for the
BBWAA for at least ten years. These... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These candidates should not get the benefit of the doubt for playing during a time where
steroids were commonly used. Taking steroids is a choice; any player willing to take steroids is
giving up the honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame (Shipigel B17). A prime example of
steroid controversy on the Hall of Fame ballot is Mark McGwire. McGwire (pictured left) hit 583
home runs, including what was once a record of 70 in the 1998 season for the St. Louis Cardinals.
McGwire s career was tainted when he was caught with Androstenedione in his locker during the
1998 season. Androstenedione better known as Andro, is a steroid precursor which is banned
from baseball. When McGwire was questioned about steroid use at a Congressional hearing on
March 17, 2005, he repeatedly said, I m not here to discuss the past (qtd. in McGwire Unlikely).
This damaged McGwire s candidacy for the Hall of Fame ballot by raising the suspicion of drug
use, influencing BBWAA writers not to vote for him. McGwire has received close to a 25
percent vote on the ballot the three years running up to 2012. Not nearly the 75 percent needed
for induction. Several BBWAA writers discussed their stance on McGwire s silence at the
Congressional hearing; that it was a tacit admission that he used steroids while playing. McGwire
needs to clarify his past and explain whether or not he used steroids, in order to maintain his
integrity and character. When evaluating McGwire s 16 year

Steroid Use in Pro Sports is Unethical Essay
When you were a kid, didn t you want to play a professional sport? What would you give to be
one of the best athletes in the world? Would you risk your reputation? Your health? Would you
be willing to die? Although many studies have come out saying that steroids diminish one s
health, people still take them hoping to be the best. Imagine if you were a 28 year old who left
college early because a pro team guaranteed you that you would play in the big leagues. Yet you
just got stuck in the minors, and the only way you could get to the big s was to take a pill that
made you super strong and super fast. It would make sense to just take it. But what if that pill

Athletics play such an important role in our society, but, unfortunately, some in professional sports
are not setting much of an example. The use of performance enhancing drugs like steroids in
baseball, football, and other sports is dangerous, and it sends the wrong message that there are
shortcuts to accomplishment, and that performance is more important than character. So tonight I
call on team owners, union representatives, coaches, and players to take the lead, to send the right
signal, to get tough, and to get rid of steroids now.
Steroids are laboratory made versions of the human hormone testosterone, which aids growth of
muscles, bones and skin. Testosterone is primarily a male hormone, though females produce trace
amounts. Doctors, for medical uses, may legally prescribe steroids. Steroids for muscle building
are obtained illegally; they are produced overseas or in clandestine laboratories in the U.S. For all
the health risks, research shows steroids do work when it comes to building muscle and power.
These things, in my judgment, work better than most scientists believe, says Gary Wadler of the
New York University School of Medicine, the athletes figured out how well these work long before
scientists. (pg. 13)
Steroids work as follows. When receptor sites don t have much testosterone, then get flooded with
it, they get activated.

time. Your maximum deposit amount is the maximum amount of money that you will allow
Betterment to transfer from your checking account at any given time (for example, you can set a
limit so Betterment never transfers more than $200 at any given time). Once you set the limits,
Betterment monitors your account at least once every week and transfers money that exceeds the
difference between your automatic Betterment deposits and your balance (always staying within

Analysis Of The Rapid-Eye Movement Sleep
Neil Stanley once said, Sleep is a selfish thing to do. Sleep is defined as a natural state of rest for
the body and mind. A person spends at least 1/3 of his or her lifetime asleep. When one sleeps,
the brain goes through a process that is necessary in learning, memory, and creativity in ways
that scientists do not fully understand. Sleep also protects the body and restores energy. REM
Sleep The sleep cycle has many stages. One of these stages is called REM (Rapid Eye
Movement) Sleep. During REM sleep (an active stage of sleep characterized by eye movement)
the brain works to create images and stories that form dreams. In the early 1950 s, William
Dement and some researchers were conducting one of the first systematic studies of REM sleep.
During a particular study, the researchers thought a machine started malfunctioning and was
creating the illusion that a subject s eyes were rapidly moving while he slept. They quickly ran
over to the individual and found that his eyes were in fact moving around, just as they should
when a person is awake. Dreams were often remembered if the subject was woken during REM
sleep. Dement s paper on the discovery was rejected five times before it was finally published.
Once published, his theory was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also determined that sleep helps with memory. The brain registers and stores an infinite
amount of information every day. This information flows through the hippocampus (the structure in
the limbic system that has a special role in the storage of memories). When a person sleeps, the
hippocampus keeps the important information and throws out the information not needed. The
brain creates vivid dreams which are just exaggerated versions of the information that was not
stored. With the brain free of useless information, associations can be made that were not seen

A Brief Note On Impressionism And Post Impressionism
IWT1 Task 1
Impressionism and Post Impressionism
By WGU student
In early 19th century, the French government controlled the Academies des Beaux Arts and Salon
de Paris of paintings. The Academies were considered the ruling authority and held annual art
exhibits called salons. The salons featured works of art that conformed to their standards. In the
second half of the 19th century, Impressionism began which was a result of French artists rejecting
traditional government and their standards. In 1874, the first independent art exhibition was held.
A few of the famous artists who participated and organizing this exhibition was Claude Monet,
Berthe Morisot and Pierre Auguste Renior along with several other artists. This group of artists ...

In addition, the French government was experiencing other vast changes. For example, they
changed from absolute monarchy to an Expansionist Empire. Religious entities did not understand
the new age advancement in neither science nor the knowledge it brought to society. Besides, this
innovative scientific knowledge was not aligned with the ancient scriptures. The ultimate change
that had a profound influence on the artists of this time was the invention of photography.
Photography essentially freed painters to become more abstract with their subject matter and
enhance their artistic freedom.
On the other hand, the Post Impressionism period began around 1880 and ended approximately
1910. The first person to coin the term post impressionism was British artist and art critic, Roger
Fry. Fry played a big role in putting on the exhibition called Manet and the Post Impressionists at
Gragron Gallery in London, which lasted from November 8, 1910 to January 15, 1911 (Voorhies,
2000). Some well known artists from this period were Vincent Van Gogh
, George Seurat, and Paul
Cezanne. The post impressionist artists focused on a different style of painting to express their
emotions. Instead of just mastering optical impressions they also used symbolism while alluding to
their deeper theme.
Symbolic and highly personal meanings were particularly important to Post Impressionists such as
Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. Rejecting interest in

believe in a supreme being who is the guider of the human beings and oversee the adherence of
concepts like dharma, karma, and truth. They also believe in the authority of the Vedas which is the

The other use of the caste structure is that it defines the social rank of a person. This is because
it does not recognize the wealth, power and poverty level of an individual. This guides him to
pursue his obligations as it set all the people to be equal at birth. This makes an individual to
take all the other human being to be equal as they do not involve their social power and wealth
to judge others. The other use of the caste arrangement is that can provide mental safety to an
individual. Through it, an individual has to know what public life he can follow as he has the
information of the place he to marries. This defies the kind of social life that person has to live
so that he can meet the expectations. Caste can also help an individual to make a selection of his
occupation. This is because the person is offered with the right occupation he should follow
from birth. He is then guided to see that he achieves what is required in that occupation. With the
use of the caste, an individual can be in a position to select a life partner. This is because it has
set the guidelines of endogamy thus the individual has to join in matrimony within his personal
class or the sub caste. This is because the selection of the mates is based on the caste rules. The
caste system as well determines the actions of an individual. This is because it operates on a set of
codes ad guidelines which guide each individual. The use of the status structure governs the way

Angela Merkel The Glass Ceiling
The term glass ceiling is an acknowledged barrier that women and members of minorities face
when they try to climb the ladder of success. They physically can see the next achievement, but
ultimately cannot reach it because of their gender or race. Angela Merkel is a product of East
Germany during the cold war, not only did she have the obstacle of being brought up by a
communist regime to overcome, but she had to prove that being a womanwould indeed make her a
good leader of the people of Germany. Sometimes accused of being an anti feminist, Merkel over

  • 2. The Negative Impact Of Technology In Education During a time of great technological advancement, keeping a job has become difficult throughout the United States. Robots, computers, and other machines are now able to perform human tasks, taking over many jobs. As economic concerns rose throughout America, former President Barack Obama spoke about issue in his farewell address, stating that economic dislocations will result from the high rate of automation taking over middle class positions (Gillespie). This suggests that advancement in automation is causing job loss, which will hurt the economy of America. Because the growth of technologyis inevitable, it will undoubtedly affect future generations. Battling the negative effects and spreading the benefits of automation starts with addressing the skills and qualities needed in the workforce. To help future generations battle automation effectively, there needs to be changes within the educational system, teaching future students skills and emphasizing qualities that cannot be outdone or emulated by a machine. Technology changed the way we learn, but it did not change what we learn. As technology advanced, the economy changed, with some jobs and skills becoming obsolete. Ending automation starts with changing what it is we are learning. Education provides a background for the future of many students; however, the information students are learning is not putting them in the right position to battle automation. In his article, Companies Need to Pay to Train Potential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Does American Culture Affect France Introduction: France, one of the oldest countries in Europe, has been the home to many languages since the dawn of its creation. As one of the most influential European nations, France has successfully spread its culture and language throughout the world. While to most it seems France is a simple, homogenous country filled with nothing more than French custom, its history tells another story. Centuries prior to the French Revolution, France was a land mass occupied by many people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. During the French Revolution of 1789, the French state begin to develop into a population driven by the government s attempts to unify the citizens of France. This process of unification was in no fashion a cordial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The European immigrants are members of the Caucasian ethnicity and most commonly are practicing Christians, a great deal of whom are catholic. Even other Christian minorities tend to blend into the French lifestyle because all Christians tends to celebrate the same religious holidays. Generally speaking, most European countries share similar traditions and perspectives in comparison to that of France. The large number of similarities between Europeans allows for them to quickly and comfortably assimilate to the standard French lifestyle. Even when it comes to politics, European immigrants can simply become fluent in the language and would have little trouble gaining support from the French people. Speaking of fluency in French, since a fairly large amount of European countries already speak Romance languages such as Spanish or Italian, it would be a lot easier adjusting languages as well. They might even already learned French in school in their native country; French is a language associated with good social and economic standing and thus is taught as a second or third language in many European ... • 4. An Analysis Of Consider The Lobster By David Foster Wallace In his article Consider the Lobster , David Foster Wallace uses the Maine Lobster Festival as a medium for his argument regarding the ethics of eating lobster. Wallace frames his article as a conversation just to get people thinking, but a deeper look at his rhetoric shows that he is arguing against the inhumanities of eating lobster, while doing everything he can to avoid sounding like he is taking a stance. Wallace starts his piece by describing the Maine Lobster Festival, he provides some background details regarding the event, but mostly it is description of what he saw when he was there. He even states that describing is what he is doing with your assigned correspondent saw it all, accompanied by one girlfriend and both his own... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, then he goes into the history of the lobster. He shares fact after fact about how Maine s earliest lobster industry was based around a dozen seaside canneries in the 1840 s (Wallace 55), and that the name lobster comes from the Old English loppestre (Wallace 55). At first these facts are interesting, but upon rereading the article one may wonder, what does this have to do with the argument? The answer is, nothing. These facts are in no way essential to adding context to Wallace s moral argument, but rhetorically they serve the purpose to distract and retain. If right after page one Wallace started criticizing eating lobster, he runs the risk of ostracizing some of his carnivorous audience, but by just narrating and sharing facts, he delays this argument and continues to capture the interest of readers as they wonder where he is going with this. Once Wallace finally does reach his argument, he continues to present himself like he doesn t want to offend any reader by tip toeing around making a claim. He starts his argument off with so then here is a question (Wallace 57), both continuing his conversational tone and trying to frame this as a discussion not a statement on morality. Then at the end of the article he talks directly to the audience saying, I m not trying to give you a PETA like screed here just trying, rather, to work out and articulate some of the troubling questions ... • 5. Rhy Lofgren Research Papers A Survivor Private George Washington Elmer Lofgren served as an infantryman in Company E, 117th Regiment, 30th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. He went into action on September 20, 1918 on the Somme Front in the Battle of the Hindenburg Line.9 As significant reinforcements from the United States reached Europe; they joined the Allies 1918 offensive. By the time Elmer arrived on the battlefield, the Allies had already pushed the Germans back to their last stronghold, the Siegfried Stellung, which the Allies called the Hindenburg Line.10 The fresh troops from America joined the attack on these fortifications and sustained extremely high casualty rates as they crossed no man s land through devastating machine gun and small arms fire. Elmer, however, survived the slaughter. Elmer s son and daughter in law, Lyle and Elizabeth Liz Lofgren, have an extensive website where I found a section in which Elmer relates an account of his experiences on the battlefield. A brief excerpt follows. The reported 7.1 percent casualty rate of the United States military forces mobilized for the Great War pales by comparison to the death and suffering witnessed by Elmer.12 Almost 89 percent of the men with whom Elmer served, either lost their lives or sustained wounds that left them incapable of walking off the field of battle.... • 6. Sports Are So Personal, Athletes Normal people from all over the world can challenge themselves to become stronger, faster, and push to work harder, sports are a means to get oneself there.. One of the nice things about sports is that each [person] can express [themselves] at [their] own level (2) and in their own way. Because action sports are so personal, athletes love what they do. At the end of the day extreme athletes, and those that are physically active, feel more accomplished and they desire to get back out there again and again because they love to explore and express themselves in their life style choices. If people never had a desire to become more, imagine how boring the world would be; nevertheless, because of action athletically minded people great changes are made daily. Athletes generally do have thrill seeking personalities, says Frank Farley, a professor of psychology at Philadelphia s Temple University, who coined the term Type T to describe such people. But many Type Ts are the opposite of reckless, Farley says. Those who live prepare for their sports, he says. They don t want to die. They want the challenges, the creativity, and the risky experiences. So they prepare. Type Ts do push the envelope, not just in sports but in science and the arts, Farley says. And while some Type Ts push it in negative ways, such as by taking drugs or committing crimes, many others are society s creators and innovators. If we didn t have these people, we d be back in the cave, Farley ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Effect Of Aa Content On The Swelling Ratio Of Hydrogel Effect of AA content on the swelling ratio of hydrogel Fig. 3b shows the effect of AA on the Q value of hydrogel. With increasing concentration of AA, the Q values of hydrogels increased and then decreased. When AA amount was more than 7 g, the Q values of hydrogels decreased because when the concentration of AA was high, the collision probability between monomers would increase, thus increasing the graft length of sulfonated cellulose, favoring the formation of a polymeric network at higher Q values of hydrogels. HIGh AA concentrations would lead to self polymerization and lower swelling ratio. The best ratio between sulfonated cellulose and monomer was determined as 1:7. 3.5 The effect of KPS on the swelling ratio of hydrogel Fig. 3c shows the effect of KPS on the Q value of hydrogel. The Q values of the hydrogels increased, followed by a decrease with increasing amount of KPS. The maximum Q value was observed at 2% KPS, because polymerization was initiated by the free radicals generated from KPS under heat. More initiators would produce more free radicals that can enhance grafting efficiency. Therefore, the hydrogel formation was enhanced and Q increased. However, too much initiator would produce too many free radicals, thus increasing the collision probability between free radicals, eventually terminating the reaction. The generated short graft chains would be difficult to form a 3D network, decreasing the Q value. 3.6 The effect of neutralization degree of AA on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Analysis Of The Movie Sea World Of Hurt Sea World of Hurt When I was little, I used to always want to go out and visit Marineland. At the tender age of 5 I was mesmerized Free Willy, the kid s film about an orca who is freed into the wild by a little boy. I was amazed by the creature on the screen every time I watched the film, it never got old. Of course at my age I did not quite understand why Willy had to be freed from the seemingly nice pool he was allowed to be living in. It was what made me want to visit Marineland to see one of these guys up close. I visited for the first time when I was about 10, and I do not remember everything but what I do remember is that I was more enticed with the rides and the gift shop than I was with their orcas. I used to question why, but now I get it. The orca we saw was underwhelming, because of the sheer sadness it emanated from the other side of the glass where it swam around in its small living area. It was not Willy, the fun orca from my childhood. It was the stark reality of a combination of solitude and mistreatment. I learned recently that the orca in Free Willy was released from captivity 9 years after the film came out in 1993, and it died in the wild after only a year because it was too dependant on us. We are the ones that created this mess. This mess of literal killer whales, of poor living conditions of these animals, the way we have ripped them from their natural habitat and put them up for show. SeaWorldplays a big role in this business. And SeaWorld, like all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Alka Seltzer Tablets Percent by Mass of NaHCO3 in Alka Seltzer Tablets Introduction Determining the percent by mass of sodium bicarbonate in baking soda is important because it demonstrates the relationship between reactants and products. In this specific experiment, it demonstrates the reaction between a base and an acid. It also reveals the effect that a limiting reactant can have on the product that is produced in a reaction. Alka Seltzer tablets aim to neutralize stomach acid and thereby reduce stomach pain, as well as other painful symptoms. Alka Seltzer Original tablets contain three active ingredients: citric acid, aspirin, and sodium bicarbonate. When added to stomach acid, the citric acid and the sodium bicarbonate react to form carbonic acid, water and carbon dioxide in the form of a gas. The gaseous carbon dioxide produces the fizz that is characteristic of Alka Seltzer.1 However, not all of the sodium bicarbonate reacts with the citric acid, as there is excess NaHCO3. The excess NaHCO3 is what works to neutralize stomach acid. When Alka Seltzer reacts with acetic acid (vinegar) and water as opposed to stomach acid, carbon dioxide, water, and sodium acetate are produced. The excess NaHCO3 reacts with the acetic acid just as it does with hydrochloric acid. Experimental First, a 100 mL graduated cylinder was obtained and filled with 35 mL of water. A pipet was used to attain a more accurate amount of liquid. The water was then poured into a beaker, which was weighed on an analytical balance. Next, an Alka Seltzer tablet was obtained and the weight measured using the same balance the weight of the beaker was measured on. When both masses were recorded, the tablet was dropped into the water. The liquid was swirled to allow for the tablet to dissolve completely. After the fizzing had stopped, the beaker was once again weighed and the mass was recorded. Each step was repeated seven more times for a total of eight trials. However, with each trial the liquids added to the beaker changed. In each new trial, an additional 5 mL of vinegar was added and 5 mL of water was taken away. Thus, beaker one had 0 mL of vinegar and 35 mL of water; beaker 2 had 5 mL of vinegar and 30 mL of water; beaker 3 had 10 mL of vinegar and 25 mL ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Optimal Dh And Temperature Conditions Lab Report Optimal pH and Temperature Conditions Comparative studies show that the optimum pH of LDH from rabbit muscle ranges from pH 6.2 to 7.8 [6]. A pH rate profile graph in a study by Fritz [6] reflects the results obtained in Figure 1, where the optimum pH was found to be 7.5 for LDH extracted from rabbit muscle. This is further supported by the optimal pH of rabbit muscle LDH obtained by another study [7], in which the pH is determined to be 7.5. Thus the results obtained in Figure 1 fall consistent with literature values. However, despite the large difference in Vmax between experimental and literature values, Figure 3 reflects similar data obtained in similar studies [9]. Michaelis Menten graphs depicted by Figure 4 and Figure 5 show that all concentrations of oxalic acid (0M, 0.01M and 0.03M) and oxamic acid (0M, 0.0200M and 0.0600M) ) seemingly saturate at the highest lactate concentration which was 95mM. In both figures, LDH saturates the fastest in the absence of inhibitors, followed by 0.01M oxalic acid and 0.0200M oxamic acid, and 0.03M oxalic acid and 0.0600M oxamic acid having the slowest reaction rate respectively shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5. These results reflect the Michaelis Menten graphs reproduced by experiments under similar conditions as explained by Powers et al [9]. As predicted, Km and Vmax values obtained from the Michaelis Menten graphs in Figure 4 and Figure 5 do not correspond with Km and Vmax values obtained in the Lineweaver Burk plot of LDH in Figure 3. The Vmax obtained in Figure 4 and Figure 5 were both 10.6ВµM/min in the absence of inhibitor whereas the Vmax in the absence of inhibitor was 0.34 ВµM/min in Figure 3. Goffman s Theory Of Social Stigma Essay 3.Theoretical Framework Erving Goffman s theory of social stigma (1963) will be used as a guideline for the thesis and will act as a basis for further research on personal and perceived depression stigma. Stigma is a deeply discrediting attribute which has a strong relationship to stereotype (Goffman, 1963) Goffman defines stigma as a gap between virtual social identity and actual social identity and states that stigmata are bodily signs which deviate from the norm (Goffman, 1963). According to him, three different types of stigma exist: (1) physical deformities, (2) blemishes of individual character and (3) tribal stigma. (1)Physical deformities: abominations of the body (2)Blemished of individual character: weak will, domineering or unnatural passions, treacherous and rigid beliefs, dishonesty, mental disorder, imprisonment, addiction, alcoholism, homosexuality, unemployment, suicidal attempts, radical political behavior (3)Tribal stigma: race, nation, religion Furthermore, Goffman introduces the reader to two main groups of characters in his logic: the normal and the stigmatized and classifies the stigmatized again into the discredited and the discreditable. The discredited show an obvious discrepancy between their actual and their virtual social identity, while the discreditable do not immediately show their differentness. I personally grew up thinking I was a mistake for being attracted to girls, and as a direct result of institutionalized homophobia, I suffer through countless micro aggressions every day. When Robert Graves was my age, he survived similar emotional trials due to being attracted to boys in the brutal British boarding school environment, which is difficult if not impossible to recover from. Today, however, he is known instead for his war service and prolific writings, and in his memoir, the soldiery is the main showcase. His portrayal of identity experimentation can be interpreted as an example for how homosexualitywas and is treated. Graves autobiography is actually a testament to the subtler forms of bigotry. Within the Charterhouse community, Graves provides examples of his reactions to homophobia, as well as the later culmination of that internalized bigotry. As a queer person, he struggles with the harmful power dynamic of predatory teachers and older boys, and as an intellectual, he expresses the similar struggle of a desire to be accepted which are often the same assertions still on the lips of modern queer activists. 2. The study talked about the Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) or osteoarthritis, which is the most common destructive jointdisease and causes of chronic disability in human beings. Osteoarthritis is often caused by aging, frequent use of knee joints or obesity. People with osteoarthritis are normally treated by glucosamine. However, when an idea is presented as a fact, it is outrageous, nothing is completely definite and everything is basically a theory. Marija Gimbutas was very passionate about the Goddess, in The Living Goddess, she says, The role of the father in prehistoric antiquity was either not fully understood or not as highly valued as that of the mother, (112). Nevertheless, the way that she presented her argument was not convincing. Gimbutas acted as though she knew the history of a civilization just by looking at the artifacts she found, she used her own research as her evidence to support her claims, and lastly she is guilty of letting her own ideas cloud her judgment. Throughout her work, Gimbutas appears to be omniscient claiming to know that there was a civilization in Old Europe that was matrifocal, peaceful and offered its citizens a higher quality of life. She paves the road for her peaceful utopia by defining the word civilization through the eyes of an archeologist, Historians have assumed that civilization implies a hierarchical political and religious organization, warfare, a class stratification, and a complex division of labor, (Gimbutas, The Civilization viii). Carol Bhakos Abraham Of Many Faiths Analysis Liam McConnell Dr. Hall Western Religious Traditions 18 September 2016 Abraham of Many Faiths Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three of the most distinct and well known religions in the world. They have persisted for generation upon generation and have by far the largest number of followers of all religions in the world. They also share some interesting similarities in their foundational stories. Where did these faiths originate, and why do they share many aspects while differing on still more? Abraham is recognized globally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, over the course of two chapters, Bhakos discusses two reservations put into one: we should not identify Ishmael and Isaac or Sarah and Hagar as separate lineages, with some being worse than others. What Bakhos is trying to explain is that over time, Judaism and Christianity have placed distinctions between Isaac/Ishmael and Sarah/Hagar, effectively forming a way of thinking that places some people over others, while in Islam both sets of people are treated more or less as equals. That is not the case in Islam, however, where both sons, along with their mothers live in the abode of Abraham, (Bakhos 153). In Judaism and Christianity, Isaac is the sole important figure while Ishmael becomes somewhat irrelevant after Hagar is cast out by Abraham on the orders of Sarah. Both of these religions also portray Hagar as, at first, an insolent woman who looks down on Sarah because she is the one giving birth to the first son of Abraham, but they both later come back and give her a much more docile role after being spoken to by the angel in the wilderness. Other texts from these same religions, however, disagree with this and even go so far as to say Sarah was never even mad at Hagar, rather, Ishmael was the one that caused her to throw them out. Regardless, however, these two religions place very clear distinctions between the four people and effectively make two distinct branches, intimating that some people in the family line are better than others. I do not agree at all with this belief and I agree with Bakhos in that it should not be something people put their faith into. While it is true that all four people have different roles and have varying levels of importance to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, I believe that the view of Islam that all these individuals should be regarded ... Two different hormones (luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone), which are produced in the pituitary gland are what then stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. The menstrual cycle can be broken down into three main phases. After puberty every month one egg in one of the two ovaries matures and is then sent out to the fallopian tubes. There are two fallopian tubes, one connected to each ovary. The fallopian tubes meet in the middle in a structure called the uterus. Each month when the egg is released from the ovaries, which is called ovulation, hair like projections in the fallopian tubes help push the egg along the tube to its destination. The fallopian tubes are not directly connected to the ovaries so when an egg is released it is caught by a fimbria, which facilitates getting the egg from the ovaries to the fallopian tubes. The egg is also pushed along the fallopian tubes by contractions in conduction with the cilia (3). These groups of people were very religious and wanted to keep their faith alive. Their leaders in England did not tolerate it so they decide to leave England to a place where can freely express their religion. (U.S History, 2008 2016) 2. The social pressures that contributed to English colonization of North America are the fact that the population in England doubled. There were to many mouths to feed and very little food, clothing and other goods that led to inflation. Since there were so many people looking for job the wages fell drastically which led the laborers in poverty. Landowners raised their rents, apprehended the lands where the peasants occupied commonly which resulted on them being homeless and landless. So they had no choice but to live in the streets. The officials finally realize that them leaving to North America would alleviate the surplus of population in England. So that is why they migrated to North America to improve their circumstances. A prime example of steroid controversy on the Hall of Fame ballot is Mark McGwire. McGwire (pictured left) hit 583 home runs, including what was once a record of 70 in the 1998 season for the St. Louis Cardinals. McGwire s career was tainted when he was caught with Androstenedione in his locker during the 1998 season. Androstenedione better known as Andro, is a steroid precursor which is banned from baseball. A person spends at least 1/3 of his or her lifetime asleep. When one sleeps, the brain goes through a process that is necessary in learning, memory, and creativity in ways that scientists do not fully understand. Sleep also protects the body and restores energy. REM Sleep The sleep cycle has many stages. One of these stages is called REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep. During REM sleep (an active stage of sleep characterized by eye movement) the brain works to create images and stories that form dreams. In the early 1950 s, William Dement and some researchers were conducting one of the first systematic studies of REM sleep. During a particular study, the researchers thought a machine started malfunctioning and was creating the illusion that a subject s eyes were rapidly moving while he slept. They quickly ran over to the individual and found that his eyes were in fact moving around, just as they should when a person is awake.
