This document discusses web scale discovery services and information literacy. It begins by providing context about the social, economic, technological, and political factors driving changes in libraries. It then describes perceptions of libraries and information literacy skills students need. Next, it outlines features of next generation discovery services and their potential pros and cons. Specifically, it notes discovery services make access easier but may diminish search skills. The document concludes by questioning if discovery services compete with or support information literacy goals of teaching students to find, evaluate, and use information effectively.
Presents the structure and strategy for a research project focused on information literacy instruction in public libraries. Important topics include data collection methods and tools, data analysis procedures, and the scope and significance of the proposed research.
The document discusses the Information Technology for Rural Librarians (ITRL) grant program which provided 16 scholarships for paraprofessionals working in rural libraries to earn a Master's in Information Science through a part-time distance education program. The program included a needs assessment of rural library services, curriculum focused on technology, management, and grant writing skills, and mentoring for librarians. It aimed to help rural librarians act as change agents by integrating technology competencies and developing outreach materials like a SWOT analysis and "fast facts" about their unique library services.

This document discusses trends and issues facing libraries in the digital future. It notes that users and expectations will continue to diversify, content will be dominated by non-text formats, and devices will focus on collaboration and creation. Libraries will need to focus on strategic alignment and reduced roles in organizing knowledge. Key shifts include e-learning moving to the cloud, increased content fragmentation across formats and licenses, and the rise of non-text content like video and 3D objects. Technologies and user environments will also continue fragmenting across different devices, platforms and demographics. The future of libraries lies in focusing on niche users, experimenting with new models like mobile cohorts, and designing services that are frictionless across all devices and user experiences.
Visualising activity in learning networks using open data and educational ...Michael Paskevicius
Delivered October13, 2011 in Cape Town South Africa at the 2011 Southern African Association for Institutional Research forum
Abstract
As more student academic activities involve both institutional and social networks, educational analysts are needing to investigate ways in which this data can be collected and interpreted to enhance learning experiences. Data recorded as students explore personal learning environments is most often not accessible or incomplete. Here we explore some of the approaches that exist to use these social networking platforms along with information from the learning management system and academic records. Combining and analysing this data has allowed us to create a number of interesting visualizations exposing patterns which would have been impossible to glean from looking at the data alone. In an age of data abundance we reflect on using some of these new measures in relation to improving learning design, increasing academic responsiveness and enhanced student experiences.
This document provides step-by-step instructions for conducting academic library research. It outlines choosing a topic and keywords, constructing a search strategy, choosing appropriate research tools like books, articles, primary sources, and datasets, running searches and evaluating results. Key tips include using synonyms, limiting or expanding search terms, combining terms with "and" or "or", trying different databases and subject headings, and getting full text or requesting items through interlibrary loan when not available locally.

Welcome. I am excited to share with you some information about this project and how to use this valuable, free resource. The Montana Memory Project.
“What is it?”
It is a digital repository sponsored by the Montana State Library and the Montana Historical Society for items from Montana's special collection. Which, basically, means we scan all types of materials and make them available on the internet. These items are then searchable and are used for education, research, life-long learning, and enjoyment. There are excellent primary resources on a wide variety of topics.
The collections are made up of a wide array of content. Some of this content includes photographs, documents, newspapers, yearbooks, maps, books, ephemera. The list goes on… There are over 70 collections and over 30,000 items. To make the content easier to manage, The web page has been organized into some broad categories which make up the tabs on the home page. This design was created with teachers and students in mind.
Here is a screenshot of the home page. You can see under the title several tabs. We will take a look at each of these tabs in the next few slides.
As you scroll down the home page you will see some important links, including links to the sponsors of the pages and the partners with this project. Additionally there is a link to information on how to contribute content to the MMP. Schools are welcome to participate in submitting collections.
The first tab on the homepage is the artwork tab. You will see artwork or art related collections listed here. This category is relatively new and one that the MMP expects to grow in the coming years. Highlighting the many talented Montana artists and their contributions.
Another new category is the Audio collections. This content includes oral histories and radio interviews currently. In the future we might find musical recordings as well. Creating community oral histories might be a great school project.
There are thousands of photographs for viewing on the MMP. Because of the large number of collections they have been organized by themes in hopes of making it easier for the user to find what they would like to see. There are photos related to agriculture and homesteading, city histories, county histories, mining, military, Native Americans, and science and technology. You can also look at the photo collections on one screen by clicking on All Photograph Collectons.
You can also access the themes from the tab menu. When you hover your mouse over the photographs tab the themes menu will drop down, you can jump to a theme by clicking on it in the list. Clicking on the tab will take you to a page with a list of the themes that you saw in the last slide.
The print materials tab contains the most content. This category is divided into five sections: books, documents, maps, newspapers, & yearbooks. The books and documents sections are very large and are therefore, further organized by themes like the photographs
Hovering the mouse over the printed materials tab produces a drop down menu of the five sections and then hovering the mouse over the books or documents section produces a second drop down menu with the themes. You can click on a theme in this list to jump to that page. We will walk through how this works in a little bit.
The contributors page lists each contributing institution and a linked list of the collections they have contributed. We are continually looking for more content and encourage people to talk to their local library about possible collections. The Montana Memory Project currently works with Libraries, Archives, Museums, and schools to add content. Local organizations and individuals are asked to work with their local library to create collections.
This section is a work in progress and one I hope you will consider helping to develop. It currently organizes collection links by learning themes.
Teachers are encouraged to submit lesson plans and ideas for how to use MMP content in the classroom. These lessons plans will be published on this page. I know it makes sense for teachers to find the natural fit for these resources within your curriculum, rather than me trying to write lesson plans for you. You are the experts and I hope this provides a method for sharing your expertise related to this content.
The Montana Historical Society has created great lessons and links to specific collections within the MMP.
The maps tab is home to an interactive map that shows the locations represented in collections. There items on the site from all over the state, but again, the MMP is continually seeking new collections as well.
This map is interactive, zooming in will show detailed locations. Clicking on just below a flag will give you of an overview for that particular collection.
This is a screenshot of the photographs page. This page has an image for each theme and clicking the image will take you to the collections for that theme. If I click on City History
I am take to this, screenshot of the city history photographs theme. Each of the images on this page represent a collection that is focused on a city’s history.
Hovering the mouse over the collection icon will “pop-up” a full collection description. Clicking on the collection image will take you to the collection browsing page.
This page is called the browse the collection page. It shows how many items are in the collection in the right hand corner and below it is a list of pages to navigate through in the collection. This screenshot shows that this collection is made up of 6159 photos. In the browse view 100 items are displayed on each page, so there are 62 pages of collection items. In this screen shot you are seeing the first 3 items in the list of 100.
The list view shows a thumbnail image of the item, the title, the date original, subjects, and an item description.
The search box is now a search within this collection. You can add or remove collections to browse or search in the left hand panel. You can also narrow your search by selecting items in the facet list on the lower left.
When you open an Item, as I have done here you will see the item title and the item in the viewing box.
This page is easiest to understand if we break in into rows of content
The tabs with the addition of favorites and help are listed beneath the banner.
The next row shows the Search box and the Viewing results 4 of 6159 images. You can page through the items with the arrows
The third row of information shows the Breadcrumbs of the site Home>collection title>item title
The fourth row pointed out by the arrow on the slide is made up of several interactive buttons that we will discuss in detail
Reference URL

Save to favorites
The first button in this row is the Reference URL
The reference URL button gives a link to this particular item
And gives an embed code to embed the item on a website
If you are using these codes you must make sure you follow the copyright restrictions for the item
Hovering over the share tab gives a drop down menu of common ways to share items with friends. Clicking on the tab will open the a box of options. There are nearly 300 different social media platforms represented in the list. We will look at two ways to share today.
Clicking on email will open an email form. You can select a webmail service at the bottom of the screen or use this email form. Add the addresses in the to and from fields. Type a message if you want and send the email. The URL link is sent with the message.
Select where you want to share the item from the drop down menu. Choose the image you want displayed with the link. Then say something and post.
Clicking on the comment tab opens a small window. Click on post comment. Type your comment and your name and then click post comment. The comment shows up in the metadata on the page for everyone to see. We manage the comments and will remove any that are not appropriate.
You can give any item a star rating by clicking on the stars in the tabs. You can also save any item to your favorites folder. At the end of your session you can review all your favorites and you have the option to export them to a PowerPoint file or to a zip file.
Scrolling down the page, you will notice that the whole image is not visible. The blue box on the thumbnail in the left-hand corner reveals how much of the image is currently visible. Resize the viewing box by clicking and dragging on the arrows at the bottom of the image.

Scrolling down, I cannot see the whole image. The blue box on the thumbnail in the left-hand corner reveals how much of the image is currently visible. Resize the viewing box by clicking and dragging on the arrows at the bottom of the image.
The blue overlay now shows that the whole image is visible. This Image was a small image as an original. Here we can see it is zoomed all the way.
This row of information above the image includes the zoom slider and several other important tools - Zoom in and out of the image

This is the default setting and what will be viewed when you open any item in the MMP
Scrolling down the page even further will reveal the descriptive metadata. This is all of the pertinent information a about the item. When you conduct a search on an item, it is this information that you are searching. If the photograph information is not recorded in the metadata, it is not searchable.
Print materials have a slightly different look when opened. Print materials are usually more than one page. The pages appear in the content menu on the right side of the screen.
You will notice that some items have a tiny + sign next to them. Clicking the + sign will open an extended menu of content
The plus sign changes to a minus sign and now I can click on any page number and to see that page. There is an inside scroll bar to navigate the pages list. The navigation button “next” at the top of the page will allow me to turn pages too. This navigation tool shows there are 35 pages in this document and we are seeing 13 in the content window.
The tabs at the top of the content view may give the option to view thumbnails of each page instead of just titles.
By typing in a search word in the general search box on the home page you will search the entire MMP. The terms entered are searched for in the metadata and the results will be all matches to that term in all collections.
Clicking on Advance search opens a window where you can specify which fields to search and within which collections. The drop down menus let you choose which words to search. The default is set to “exact phrase” and you can use the operator “and” or “or.”
The drop down arrow next to all fields allows you to choose which fields to search for your term. If you know the title of an item and want to get to that particular item quickly, you can narrow your search to only the title field of the metadata.
You have the option to select specific collections to search with in. Place check marks next to the collection you want to search. Here they are all selected. Clicking the check mark next to select all collection will “de-select” all and we can then click just on the collections we want to search.
The information in these metadata fields must be entered when the content is added to the MMP. The item is uploaded to a software program, that allows for this information to be created. The more complete this information the better search results will be.
OCR requires a specific license to run. The MMP has a limited number of OCR licenses to share with all contributors. Photographs are not OCR’d even if they are captioned. We require that the caption be typed into the description field.
Search results using OCR appear within the document or within the text view of the item . The term is in the search box and the number of times the term was found in the document are listed at the top of the page. The number found on each page is listed in the content sidebar. The term is highlighted on the page.
If the term is not highlighted click on the text tab to change the view.
Clicking on the Text view will show just the OCR’d text
The View image and text tab will show the two side by side.
Text image view example, see the text to the left and the original document to the right
Another tab you have to select from on this page is the page flip view.
Clicking the page flip view gives a nice overview of the content pages. You can see the page layout, but the print is not large enough to read. The zoom tools do not work particularly well in this view.
You also have the option to download the item or print the item.
In 2013 Montana Memory Project became a partner with the Mountain West Digital Library. This portal displays content from several partners including Montana and it gives our content a wider audience.
Clicking on the partners tab at the top of the page, and scrolling down to Montana will show you a list of all our contributors. Clicking on these names takes you to a page where their collections are linked.
