In this new race, economic competition among nations will be less on physical assets and more on knowledge assets. Pakistan must take urgent and substantive steps to build its ecosystem and knowledge culture to leapfrog ahead. What needs to be done? In my course on Marketing Strategies for Emerging Economies, Summer 2019 students of the Institute of Business Management, Karachi, Pakistan were asked to come up with recommendations. This is an example of some of the best work submitted.

• Pakistan is an Emerging Economy.
• Now-a-days technology adaption is growing
rapidly.
• In a recent report Pakistan is the 4th fastest
growing country in freelancing.
• Our manpower quality is admired allover the
world.
• But we are lacking behind in providing
resources to our next generation.

3. KNOWLEDGE BASED ECONOMY

• Enabling citizens to adapt modern
technologies to compete with the living
standard globally.
• Providing facilities and support to those who
want to solve local societal problems like
water, power, health, education, crime etc.
• Citizens of the state solve the major
challenges of the state rather than spending
huge amount of money for importing any
solution.

• Pakistan has some R&D centers across the
country and also supporting different
institutes to do R&D.
• But we are lacking in world class resources,
due to which we are unable to complete most
of the researches.
• Political situation in worst, if any idea comes
up for the resolution of society/state’s
problem then it has to be put on hold until
someone gets profit.

PAKISTAN

• There are some international brands who are
collaborating in Pakistan with local companies
and institutes for R&D.
• For Example: Google, Microsoft, IBM are doing
a good job in enabling people with the latest
technologies to solve the problems.
• Nest I/O, National Incubation Center, Microsoft
Innovation Centers are some examples of R&D
center in Karachi.

• Pakistanis are trying really hard to be a part of
some R&D, centers around the globe.
• CERN a technology center in Geneva, has
around 20+ Pakistani Scientists working in
Large Hadron Collider.
• There are many other associations and societies
which are leading by Pakistani Scientists.

7. GLOBAL BEST PRACTICES

• Globally there are many R&D centers in different
countries.
• Their government supports them both in terms of
resources and financially.
• They have been provided with world class technology
and resources.
• They strive to find problems in society and work for
their solutions.
• No restriction, no political/religious or any kind of
pressure or hurdles.
• They are bridging the gap between industries and
educational institutes and creating more jobs for local
talent.

• TNO: Institute ofTechnology andApplied Research Netherlands.
• It is formed by the government of Netherlands.
• To work on different sectors like military safety, health, environment, green power,
industrial challenges, education, medical research, societal issues.
• They work on commercial projects to generate revenue as well as government projects.

• They work in different ways, they generate
revenue by their own, as well as government
assign them a specific budget.
• They work on different companies ideas and all
the expense is borne by the company.
• They work on government projects specially
military related on the assigned budget from the
government.
• They also do research on their own related to
other challenges and offer commercial companies
to collaborate with them to execute their research
as a commercial project.
• They sell their projects which to any commercial
company who wants to adapt it.

which can be supplied to the nearby location.

• Pakistan should start supporting these kind of
initiatives.
• They should allocate a specific budget to it.
• Regardless of political/religious influence.
• Accessible to anyone who wants to be a part of
it.

• Integrating all educational & technical
institutes together with these R&D centers to
help each other in finding the solution in
better way.
• Providing international standard resources
and technology.
• Enabling them to work on internal issues,
which will bring prosperity to Pakistan.
• In this way Pakistan can create more jobs and
making people to earn independently.

• Pakistan can create an institute or R&D
center where all are invited to present any
idea which can helpful for the betterment of
society.
• Create a panel of judges from the top
institutes or professionals from commercial
market, who can analyze and judge.
• If any idea gets selected then government
should assign a supervisor from state and
allocate them budget, support and resources
to execute the plan.
• In this way we can solve internal state issues
by ourselves.

• More jobs, less poverty.
• Solution for society issues which can be
done in a better way by their own
people.
• Increase in literacy rate.
• Decrease in crime, because one of the
major cause of crime and corruption is
poverty and unemployment.

• International community got attracted for
investment.
• More jobs will enable people to pay tax.
• Do not need to spend huge amount on
international solution.
• This will increase the pace of growth for
Pakistan.

• At the end I would like to say that enabling our own people to get knowledge is better
than hefty loans from IMF.
• Pakistan needs to start transition towards knowledge based economy.
• Knowledge is the key to success.
