SUSTAINABLE ECONOMICS
Kenya has abundant opportunities in nearly all its sectors. Being a growing economy, it has all
the necessary conditions to foster investments but inadequate capability to indulge in all of them
due to limited resourcing, lack of enough bold entrepreneurs, lack of sufficient political and
economic good will. These gaps widen the ability of Kenyans develop themselves, especially the
middle class.
In an ideal setting, the participation of the middle class in the whole economy drives collectively
the welfare appraisal of the citizenry. This does not only apply to the economic well-being, but
also in the politics and social arenas. As well stipulated in the vision 2030, these three pillars are
instrumental to good leadership, equitable and fair distribution of resources, good social
organization, better moral judgment, and ultimately a sound and sustainable economic growth
and development.
Such attributes are only achieved if we censor active participation amongst the middle class.
Although all the pillars of progression are virtually important, economic empowerment is a key
component to unlocking potentials in all the other sectors. It is an eye opener to the benefits
accrued to other sectors hence good planning is a vital element in guarding this vision.
As observed in majority of the capitalistic and social approaches of economic awakening, the
group to be empowered is the youth and young adults as they form most of the middle class.
They have the strength, education, brains, ability and zeal to venture into different fields.
Another point to note is the fact that there is a gap in transition from a developing to newly
industrialized, what is associated with the “Dutch Disease” whereas people venture into more
fashionable and more appealing businesses, they forget the basic business that deal with the
social amenities like food, clothes and shelter. Subsistence production by the lower class cannot
sustain the economic needs of the whole economy. Although this is a general observation,
statistically, it can prove a huge economic impediment towards sustainable economic growth and
development.
The Way Forward
The key word in this remedy is the youth. They hold, not only the ability and expertise, but also
the mandate to share and pass on to the generations to come. The following are amongst few of
the areas to consider in acting sustainably. They are not exhaustive but offer the leeway to
greater plans and eventual success.
Education is the biggest tool to bridge the inequality equation. It is the eye opener to most social
and economic shortcomings. As I have explained in my previous blogs, customization of our
learning procedures can help out offer the understanding we need. Despite the massive allocation
of funds to this sector, without adequate planning, we will never see the fruits of our taxes. From
the recent revelations in Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu, Marsabit and Baringo counties, one
thing that stands out; illiteracy. There are few or no schools in these areas.
The county and national government should create a working formula to ensure that the youth
carry pens around, not guns. Through vocational training, the county authority can design
favorable learning procedures and environment and leave science to dictate livelihoods, not
muscle. On its part, the national government should categorize these hardships and consider
students from such areas in allocation of tertiary education. Their fees should be subsidized so as
to measure up the pressure from more advanced areas in towns and cities. Moreover, artisan
courses and best practice methods should be developed in village polytechnics to suit the
economic activity of the area. This policy can be used in all areas, but mostly upcountry.
Employment is also another way of developing sustainability. However you view it, any
engagement in productive work can develop a sense of responsibility amongst the youth. A case
study is the reorganization of the NYS to include artisan and technical education in their
curriculum. The President has also launched a volunteer leadership and entrepreneurial targeting
recent graduates. This is the right steps in creating hopes and resilience in our youth.
Besides these great strides from the government, the available threshold in loan facilitation is not
going down well with the youth. The terms, mode of disbursement, requirement, civic education
and political goodwill are far-fetched. As I will always say, customization will go a long way in
helping out. Also there should be a supervision team from the allocating authority who will not
only monitor progress, but also offer financial and managerial advice to the youth driven
projects.
The ultimate wish of using employment as a way to create sustainability is by appointing and
electing as many youth as possible in parastatals and other positions. This will foster inclusivity
and experience for transition purposes. The appointing and electing authority should desist from
recycling old guards to this crucial positions, not because they serve at the wish of the appointing
authority, but because modern times call for modern measures. I believe the same books these
old guards read are not different from the ones we read, if not better.
There should also be data banks for qualified personnel from the government, just like some
corporates. This can reduce the hustle in looking for a perfect replacement. This can also reduce
the budget and time allocated for recruitment, which can be actively used for other pressing
matters. Last but not least, DESIST FROM CORRUPTION AND NEPOTISM. This model can
be effective in most urban centres and government appointments.
Collaboration from all angles of leadership can prove important. This may lay some strong base
for self-realization. Some of our problems are internally generated hence the need for self-check.
Elected leaders, both at the county and the national government need to build a working rapport
amongst themselves and the corporate leaders. They should teach and show good governance,
understand priorities right, encourage communal solutions to communal problems and share
knowledge amongst themselves. This will not only show inclusivity, but tackle problems like
insecurity, communal feuds, sabotage and power struggles. This line of thinking can be effective
in West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Turkana and many more
facing such problems.
That is my ideal Socio-Economic Dispensation.

Sustainable Economics

  • 1. SUSTAINABLE ECONOMICS Kenya has abundant opportunities in nearly all its sectors. Being a growing economy, it has all the necessary conditions to foster investments but inadequate capability to indulge in all of them due to limited resourcing, lack of enough bold entrepreneurs, lack of sufficient political and economic good will. These gaps widen the ability of Kenyans develop themselves, especially the middle class. In an ideal setting, the participation of the middle class in the whole economy drives collectively the welfare appraisal of the citizenry. This does not only apply to the economic well-being, but also in the politics and social arenas. As well stipulated in the vision 2030, these three pillars are instrumental to good leadership, equitable and fair distribution of resources, good social organization, better moral judgment, and ultimately a sound and sustainable economic growth and development. Such attributes are only achieved if we censor active participation amongst the middle class. Although all the pillars of progression are virtually important, economic empowerment is a key component to unlocking potentials in all the other sectors. It is an eye opener to the benefits accrued to other sectors hence good planning is a vital element in guarding this vision. As observed in majority of the capitalistic and social approaches of economic awakening, the group to be empowered is the youth and young adults as they form most of the middle class. They have the strength, education, brains, ability and zeal to venture into different fields. Another point to note is the fact that there is a gap in transition from a developing to newly industrialized, what is associated with the “Dutch Disease” whereas people venture into more fashionable and more appealing businesses, they forget the basic business that deal with the social amenities like food, clothes and shelter. Subsistence production by the lower class cannot sustain the economic needs of the whole economy. Although this is a general observation, statistically, it can prove a huge economic impediment towards sustainable economic growth and development. The Way Forward The key word in this remedy is the youth. They hold, not only the ability and expertise, but also the mandate to share and pass on to the generations to come. The following are amongst few of the areas to consider in acting sustainably. They are not exhaustive but offer the leeway to greater plans and eventual success. Education is the biggest tool to bridge the inequality equation. It is the eye opener to most social and economic shortcomings. As I have explained in my previous blogs, customization of our learning procedures can help out offer the understanding we need. Despite the massive allocation of funds to this sector, without adequate planning, we will never see the fruits of our taxes. From the recent revelations in Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu, Marsabit and Baringo counties, one thing that stands out; illiteracy. There are few or no schools in these areas.
  • 2. The county and national government should create a working formula to ensure that the youth carry pens around, not guns. Through vocational training, the county authority can design favorable learning procedures and environment and leave science to dictate livelihoods, not muscle. On its part, the national government should categorize these hardships and consider students from such areas in allocation of tertiary education. Their fees should be subsidized so as to measure up the pressure from more advanced areas in towns and cities. Moreover, artisan courses and best practice methods should be developed in village polytechnics to suit the economic activity of the area. This policy can be used in all areas, but mostly upcountry. Employment is also another way of developing sustainability. However you view it, any engagement in productive work can develop a sense of responsibility amongst the youth. A case study is the reorganization of the NYS to include artisan and technical education in their curriculum. The President has also launched a volunteer leadership and entrepreneurial targeting recent graduates. This is the right steps in creating hopes and resilience in our youth. Besides these great strides from the government, the available threshold in loan facilitation is not going down well with the youth. The terms, mode of disbursement, requirement, civic education and political goodwill are far-fetched. As I will always say, customization will go a long way in helping out. Also there should be a supervision team from the allocating authority who will not only monitor progress, but also offer financial and managerial advice to the youth driven projects. The ultimate wish of using employment as a way to create sustainability is by appointing and electing as many youth as possible in parastatals and other positions. This will foster inclusivity and experience for transition purposes. The appointing and electing authority should desist from recycling old guards to this crucial positions, not because they serve at the wish of the appointing authority, but because modern times call for modern measures. I believe the same books these old guards read are not different from the ones we read, if not better. There should also be data banks for qualified personnel from the government, just like some corporates. This can reduce the hustle in looking for a perfect replacement. This can also reduce the budget and time allocated for recruitment, which can be actively used for other pressing matters. Last but not least, DESIST FROM CORRUPTION AND NEPOTISM. This model can be effective in most urban centres and government appointments. Collaboration from all angles of leadership can prove important. This may lay some strong base for self-realization. Some of our problems are internally generated hence the need for self-check. Elected leaders, both at the county and the national government need to build a working rapport amongst themselves and the corporate leaders. They should teach and show good governance, understand priorities right, encourage communal solutions to communal problems and share knowledge amongst themselves. This will not only show inclusivity, but tackle problems like insecurity, communal feuds, sabotage and power struggles. This line of thinking can be effective in West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Turkana and many more facing such problems. That is my ideal Socio-Economic Dispensation.
