In this new race, economic competition among nations will be less on physical assets and more on knowledge assets. Pakistan must take urgent and substantive steps to build its ecosystem and knowledge culture to leapfrog ahead. What needs to be done? In my course on Marketing Strategies for Emerging Economies, Summer 2019 students of the Institute of Business Management, Karachi, Pakistan were asked to come up with recommendations. This is an example of some of the best work submitted.

How to transition Pakistan towards a knowledge based economy.
1. PAKISTAN’S ECONOMY
AND INNOVATION
ANALYSIS OF PAKISTAN’S MARKETVS GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE
BASED ECONOMIES

3. INTRODUCTION
■ Technology InnovationCentres (TIC’s) are
becoming an up-beat viral trend all over the world
in order to create innovative solutions to the
prevailing hard-core problems
■ TIC’s are based on applied and scientific research
based on the following industrial dimensions:
1. Health & Sciences
2. Automation & Engineering
3. Marketability of products and services
4. Education
5. Artificial Intelligence
4. EXAMPLES OFTIC’s
■ ThisTIC is based in Switzerland and consists of 6 different parks that are all dedicated
to the different research aspects that are studied
■ Each Innovation Park is solely focused on what it knows best (Park Zurich for e.g. Life
Sciences & Quality of Life , Engineering & Environment , DigitalTechnologies &
Communication)
■ Has become Switzerland’s source of pride
■ Is affiliated withThe Swiss Institute ofTechnology
1.The Switzerland (Swiss) Innovation Park – Connecting Great Minds
5. EXAMPLES OFTIC’s
■ Is a German basedTIC
■ Is affiliated with a number of Institutes and research agencies located in Germany
■ Students and faculty fromThe Fraunhofer Institute take out time and tend to
volunteer too, in creating innovative solutions
■ Is becoming the backbone of the German economy
2.The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft
6. COMMERCIALIZATION
Several projects that have been conducted
by the above mentionedTIC’s are
commercialized i.e. made available for the
general public to use and benefit from
One of the projects that was done by The Swiss
Innovation Park was “the aeroplane that was
powered by solar panels” so that it would cut
down on fuel costs and other related costs
Second project was “the stair-climbing wheelchair "which
was created to enable people with disabilities and leg
impairments to be able to move up and down stairs,
without any issues and moving in ease. The wheelchair was
engineered by the scientists and researchers at the Swiss
Institute ofTechnology (ETH Zurich)
7. COMMERCIALIZATION
Third project conducted by the Swiss Innovation Park was “the
cancer-drug (IP-001) ”, that was created for ablated tumours. It was
to be administered via intravenous during a life threatening surgery.
This injection tends to shrink the size of the tumour and is known to
have a long-lasting response. It is being tested in clinical trials at the
moment conducted by with the Swiss Institute ofTechnology. Have
also partnered the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK)
for clinical trial development.
Fourth project conducted was the introduction of a
“self-driving electric bus”, which was fuel efficient
and had been tested by 19 recipients, and had a 100%
success rate. It travels faster than a car/ average bus
speed. Operates on a single battery, charges at night
in 3-4 hours.
Fifth project was “artificial intelligence being used to
help the disabled”, able to communicate their
thoughts to others.
8. COMMERCIALIZATION
Some of the projects that were done by The
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft are as follows:
1. ‘The mechanical arm' developed to aid humans in
their work settings in the factories. These robots have
algorithms fed, that enable them to do jobs that might
be life-threatening for humans.
2. ‘The technologies lab’-The ‘ProTable’ is a table
which is digitized so can project 2D/3D effects while
presenting your ideas. The light ceilings have been
made in such a way that it has the effect of a cloudy
sky in the room.Which improves the attitude of the
employees working.
9. COMMERCIALIZATION
3. ‘Isi-Speech’-This enables people who
are suffering from speech deficiency due
to certain diseases like Parkinson’s
disease, a severe stroke, etc.This
enables them to improve their speech or
able to converse without any problems.
4. ‘Pro-India’-This GermanTIC has
partnered with a company in India
to create the effect of heating
water with the help of solar panels.
11. PAKISTAN’S MARKET
OPPORTUNITY
■ Pakistan has a huge and ever-growing population (approximately
1.6 billion)
■ Growing Middle Class Segment
■ Various problems exist in which innovative solutions are needed
like:
1. Pollution from factories
2. Improper hospital and industrial waste disposal (as recently it was
discovered that at Seaview , Karachi , some hospitals had dumped their
extremely hazardous waste on the beach side, which posed as a
significant threat to the general public as well as to the marine life)
3. Use of plastic bags
4. Medical costs are sky-rocketing thus innovative drug solutions can be
catered too
5. Out-break of various life-threatening disease.
12. SOURCES OF FUNDING
■ Can get in touch with University of Karachi (KU)
as they have various research departments that
would readily help
■ Pitching ideas to successful companies for a bit of
goodwill (networking)
■ Personal funding
■ Crowd-funding
13. ADDRESSINGA
SPECIFIC PROBLEM
■ In Pakistan there’s an outbreak of Chikungunya (a disease
spread by a certain type of mosquito) due to the dirty
conditions on the streets.
■ There’s no specific cure for it, as the disease is in its infancy
stage i.e. it’s a relatively newly discovered disease and
doctors and researchers still haven’t come up with a cure and
anti-dote for it.
■ The symptoms are: severe leg pain and high fever resulting in
a numbing sensation in the patient’s leg.The patient may be
unable to walk for days or even 2-3 months, depending on
the severity of this illness.
■ The number of cases have been steadily increasing.
14. SOLUTION
■ The Karachi University (KU) along with help from some
donors, the UNAID and with the help of the well-established
hospitals (like Aga Khan, South City, OMI and Ziauddin) should
join hands and conduct research
■ Via the research, an innovative drug can be produced that will
help in reducing the severity of this disease
■ The drug should then be located all over the country and be
available at cost-effective prices, even catering to the lower
segment of society.
15. CONNECTING
PEOPLE
TOGETHER
■ Educate people on the security of the situation by making
doctors/nurses talk to their patients/families
■ Advertising about the drug and the disease symptoms
■ Go to schools and colleges and educate the children on the
importance of cleaning up their streets and maintain its
cleanliness
■ Impose fines for littering the place
■ Conduct seminars to push doctors to start acting on this issue.
16. You may have the clocks,
but we have the time!
So let’s start acting soon!
