Introduction of facilitator: Lynda D. Brown 
Ms. Brown is a bestselling author, and producer & host of The Author Chat Show on blogtalkradio.com and Google Hangouts on Air. After successfully publishing her own book, Ms. Brown realized that many authors were struggling to promote their books. Ms. Brown decided to use her experience in marketing and promotion to create an online radio show or podcast to interview new and established authors looking to promote their books to a wider audience. 
In October 2010, she created the Author Chat Show on blogtalkradio.com. The show has seen a significant increase of listeners over the years and now authors are eagerly seeking her out to help them promote their books. 
In July 2014, Ms. Brown decided to expand her show by interviewing authors overseas, and she created The Author Chat Show on Google Hangout on Air to achieve this.
Part One: What is a Podcast? 
According to Wikipedia, here’s the definition of a podcast: 
A podcast is a digital medium consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device. The word is a neologism and portmanteau derived from "broadcast" and "pod" from the success of the iPod, as audio podcasts are often listened to on portable media players. 
Merriam Webster defines Podcast: a program (as of music or talk) made available in digital format for automatic download over the Internet. 
A list of all the audio or video files associated with a given series is maintained centrally on the distributor's server as a web feed, and the listener or viewer employs special client application software, known as a pod catcher, that can access this web feed, check it for updates, and download any new files in the series. This process can be automated so that new files are downloaded automatically, which may seem to the user as if the content is being broadcast or "pushed" to them. Files are stored locally on the user's computer or other device ready for offline use, giving simple and convenient access to the content. Podcasting contrasts with webcasting (Internet streaming), which generally isn't designed for offline listening to user-selected content. 
As discussed by Richard Berry, podcasting is both a converged medium bringing together audio, the web and portable media player, and a disruptive technology that has caused some in the radio business to reconsider some of the established practices and preconceptions about audiences, consumption, production and distribution. This idea of disruptiveness is largely because no one person owns the technology; it is free to listen and create content, which departs from the traditional model of 'gate-kept' media and
production tools. It is very much a horizontal media form: producers are consumers and consumers become producers and engage in conversations with each other.
What is blogtalkradio.com? 
BlogTalkRadio is a web-based platform that allows podcasters and talk show hosts to create live and on-demand talk format content for distribution on the web and podcast distribution channels. Its claim to fame is a web based 'studio' that allows its content creators to host multi-participant broadcasts using a computer and a phone. 
Howard Kurtz, in his "Media Notes" column in The Washington Post, wrote about BlogTalkRadio that "The process is nearly idiot-proof. The host logs on to a Web page with a password, types in when he wants the show to air, and then, using a garden-variety phone, calls a special number. The computer screen lists the phone numbers of guests or listeners calling in, and the host can put as many as six on the air at once by clicking a mouse. Listeners can download a podcast version later, a populist force in cyberspace." 
Condé Nast Portfolio referred to BlogTalkRadio as a site that "has become the dominant player in the latest media trend, one that allows anyone with a Web connection to host a talk show on any topic at any time of day. It is the newest form of new media; the audio version of the internet blog.
Okay, let’s get started. In Part One, we will spend the first hour 
creating an account and learning how to create a user profile. Then I’ll 
show you how to create a show page, schedule guest and how to use 
the virtual studio. 
In the second hour, I will show you how to actually host a show! I’ve 
set up a 30 minute Live interview to air on my Author Chat Show.
How to create a BlogTalkRadio account: 
Filling out your profile makes your show easy to find. A complete profile includes a detailed description, catchy title, unique cover artwork, and connections to your social media pages. 
A good description has the keywords people are searching for on Google, Bing and Yahoo. For example if your show is about gardening be sure to use terms like "organic fertilizer, homegrown, vegetables, plants, seedling, nursery, and soil" and more. Writing a description will also help you plan topics for your show. We also find that adding social links to your Facebook and Google+ profiles helps boost your traffic from search engines.

  • 3. Introduction of facilitator: Lynda D. Brown Ms. Brown is a bestselling author, and producer & host of The Author Chat Show on blogtalkradio.com and Google Hangouts on Air. After successfully publishing her own book, Ms. Brown realized that many authors were struggling to promote their books. Ms. Brown decided to use her experience in marketing and promotion to create an online radio show or podcast to interview new and established authors looking to promote their books to a wider audience. In October 2010, she created the Author Chat Show on blogtalkradio.com. The show has seen a significant increase of listeners over the years and now authors are eagerly seeking her out to help them promote their books. In July 2014, Ms. Brown decided to expand her show by interviewing authors overseas, and she created The Author Chat Show on Google Hangout on Air to achieve this.
  • 4. Part One: What is a Podcast? According to Wikipedia, here’s the definition of a podcast: A podcast is a digital medium consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device. The word is a neologism and portmanteau derived from "broadcast" and "pod" from the success of the iPod, as audio podcasts are often listened to on portable media players. Merriam Webster defines Podcast: a program (as of music or talk) made available in digital format for automatic download over the Internet. A list of all the audio or video files associated with a given series is maintained centrally on the distributor's server as a web feed, and the listener or viewer employs special client application software, known as a pod catcher, that can access this web feed, check it for updates, and download any new files in the series. This process can be automated so that new files are downloaded automatically, which may seem to the user as if the content is being broadcast or "pushed" to them. Files are stored locally on the user's computer or other device ready for offline use, giving simple and convenient access to the content. Podcasting contrasts with webcasting (Internet streaming), which generally isn't designed for offline listening to user-selected content. As discussed by Richard Berry, podcasting is both a converged medium bringing together audio, the web and portable media player, and a disruptive technology that has caused some in the radio business to reconsider some of the established practices and preconceptions about audiences, consumption, production and distribution. This idea of disruptiveness is largely because no one person owns the technology; it is free to listen and create content, which departs from the traditional model of 'gate-kept' media and
  • 5. production tools. It is very much a horizontal media form: producers are consumers and consumers become producers and engage in conversations with each other.
  • 6. What is blogtalkradio.com? BlogTalkRadio is a web-based platform that allows podcasters and talk show hosts to create live and on-demand talk format content for distribution on the web and podcast distribution channels. Its claim to fame is a web based 'studio' that allows its content creators to host multi-participant broadcasts using a computer and a phone. Howard Kurtz, in his "Media Notes" column in The Washington Post, wrote about BlogTalkRadio that "The process is nearly idiot-proof. The host logs on to a Web page with a password, types in when he wants the show to air, and then, using a garden-variety phone, calls a special number. The computer screen lists the phone numbers of guests or listeners calling in, and the host can put as many as six on the air at once by clicking a mouse. Listeners can download a podcast version later, a populist force in cyberspace." Condé Nast Portfolio referred to BlogTalkRadio as a site that "has become the dominant player in the latest media trend, one that allows anyone with a Web connection to host a talk show on any topic at any time of day. It is the newest form of new media; the audio version of the internet blog.
  • 7. Okay, let’s get started. In Part One, we will spend the first hour creating an account and learning how to create a user profile. Then I’ll show you how to create a show page, schedule guest and how to use the virtual studio. In the second hour, I will show you how to actually host a show! I’ve set up a 30 minute Live interview to air on my Author Chat Show.
  • 8. How to create a BlogTalkRadio account: Filling out your profile makes your show easy to find. A complete profile includes a detailed description, catchy title, unique cover artwork, and connections to your social media pages. A good description has the keywords people are searching for on Google, Bing and Yahoo. For example if your show is about gardening be sure to use terms like "organic fertilizer, homegrown, vegetables, plants, seedling, nursery, and soil" and more. Writing a description will also help you plan topics for your show. We also find that adding social links to your Facebook and Google+ profiles helps boost your traffic from search engines.   • 13. Part Two Now let’s record a show. This will be all hands on… The St. Louis Public Library offers a great FREE blogging and podcasting class for library patrons. I took the class and learned so much, especially about editing!
