2. A Short Note On Disaster And The Aftermath Of Water...
M2 DBQ2
Question 2: Choose an event from the past that caused a significant amount of water pollution
(tsunami, oil spill, etc.). Write a thorough description of the event/disaster and the aftermath to
water resources. What can/did us as humans learn from this? What can you as an individual do to
help limit water pollution? Cite your sources...including the textbook
***Event/Disaster
Hurricane Katrina hit the City of New Orleans which is 15 thousand square miles underwater, killed
1, 245 people with the hurricane and subsequent floods, with an estimated of One hundred and eight
billion dollar deficit. Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest hurricane in the United States since 1928.
The floodwaters erupted at the Industrial street canal, 17 street canals (the waters of Lake
Pontchartrain tore the wall 450ft long) and the London street canal. (Telegraph 2015)
****AFTERMATH Water Pollution
Several chemical plants, petroleum refining facilities, and contaminated sites, including Superfund
sites, were covered by floodwaters. Hundreds of commercial establishments, such as service
stations, pest control businesses, and dry cleaners, released potentially hazardous chemicals into the
floodwaters.
In the confusion immediately after the flooding, the amount of contamination was not known. Oil
slicks near some service stations and flooded automobiles and wastes floating or suspended in
floodwaters provided clear evidence of some environmental releases.

3. Ralph Waldo Emerson Self Reliance
In Ralph Waldo Emerson s essay Self Reliance, Emerson discusses the perception of self reliance.
Self reliance to Emerson is a concept of trusting personal thoughts and knowledge opposed to
agreeing and submitting to the preconceived notions already forced upon individuals within a
society. Even though personal beliefs and thoughts can be swayed and influenced by outside forces
if one choses to listen to superficial thoughts, I agree with Emerson that the concept of believing in
personal truths is necessary to maintain the truth and to become more self aware. As individuals
rely more on their own personal beliefs and truths, their understanding of knowledge and happiness
can be furthered, by decreasing their dependence on what other s claim... Show more content on

but I shall obey God rather than you, and while I have life and strength I shall never cease from
the practice and teaching of philosophy... (Plato 12). Socrates s point is that the he will continue to
stay firm in believing his own personal convictions and dogmas which derived from his own mind,
rather than succeeding to the government s will and listening to the single voice of the majority.
Socrates explains further that knowledge is the truth and he will continue to pursue the truth so as
not to allow the truth to become stagnant and overused as it would be if he did not question his life
further. Socrates exemplifies the model of self reliance through his decision to not only disregard
the notions of society but also in his decision to believe his own ideas and conceptions of what the
truth is. Socrates relies purely on his own personal thoughts. This concept is important because so
often humankind ignores that feeling or conviction deep within themselves. Emerson and Socrates
both strongly argue that in order to fully comprehend what truth and knowledge are, you absolutely
must fully commit yourself to the beliefs within you. Self reliance not only allows for a deeper
connection with the truth and knowledge, but also allows humankind to increase critical
examinations of current positions in

Haimabati s persona in the narrative reveals two contradictory aspects of her position and
situation in the social and medical history for women in 19th century Bengal. In a sense she was
radical, taking decisions for herself, rejecting Brahminical Hinduism, remarrying a Brahmo, and
pursuing at great risk her ambition to get educated and become self sufficient. During her
wanderings in search for education and a better life, after she left Benares, she met a woman
ruined and deserted by the man she hoped to marry. Haimabati immediately becomes sympathetic
and calls her sister , showing true female solidarity. From her own experience of being a child

Later in the narrative, he shows the true colours of his male ego, abusing Haimabati for nothing,
beating her at times, and jeopardising her professional life. At one point he got involved in a
brawl with Haimabati s superior at her workplace, and it was she who saved him from a legal
action, by apologising for his conduct. He knew that he would never be able to earn himself, yet
it was no longer bearable to his male ego to live on his wife s income. Haimabati does not use
any harsh word to describe these feats of her husband, but her sense of irritation is not always
hidden, though she tried to wear a stoical calm and accept everything as God s will. Her willing
compromise with her husband s abuses shows how internalised patriarchy could be: being
otherwise so self sufficient she kept herself subservient to the man who, she believed, showed the
generosity of remarrying her and providing her with a respectable status in society. These
contradictions and complexities in Haimabati s life, which Indrani Sen has also noticed (60) point
towards an intriguing paradox in feminist history. Her struggle for identity, extraordinary despite all
these contradictions, shaped her personality in two ways: by resisting patriarchy and by
compromising with it.

difficulties and hard times he is going to go through trying to actually build and foolproof the

6. The Hidden History Of The Jfk Assassination
The Hidden History of the JFK Assassination For nearly five decades, historians have debated
over whether or not the John F. Kennedy assassination was from a lone gunman or as part of a
bigger conspiracy cover up. On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he
paraded through Dallas, Texas. That same afternoon, Dallas police had arrested their suspect, Lee
Harvey Oswald. Oswald, an itinerant ex U.S. marine and self described Marxist Leninist,
previously lived in the Soviet Union prior to his move back to the United States. However,
within days of his arrest, Oswald was dead. Oswald was murdered by Jack Ruby on national
television in the basement of a Dallas police station. Historians, through the years, have stated that
Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and for himself, while others have maintained that Kennedy was
killed as part of a wider cover up. The Warren CommissionReport was established by Lyndon
Johnson, Kennedy s successor, to further investigate Kennedy s assassination. After nearly a
yearlong investigation, the commission, led by Chief Justice Earl Warren concluded that alleged
gunman Lee Harvey Oswald had acted alone in assassinating America s 35th President, and that
there was no conspiracy, either domestic or international, involved. Despite its seemingly firm
conclusions, the report proved controversial and failed to silence conspiracy theories surrounding
the event. Historians have held dramatically different views about the

PAHs can be formed by incomplete combustion of carbon containing fuels such as wood, coal,
diesel, fat, tobacco, and incense(Zhang, Chen, Lv, 2016).This study is seeking to determine the
chemical constitution for major PAHs, observe and identify the different seasonal variance in which
there is the most pollution, and identify the source of the PAH pollution in Beijing, Shijiazhuang,
and Tianjin that are believed to cause cancer, mutations and birth defects. In order to answer the
questions of this study multiple resources were deployed and experiments carried out. First air
samples were collected from the following cities, Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, and the reference
city, Datong. Air samples were also taken from four cities, Nanling, Shennongjia, Pangquangou, and
Changbaishan, that were all background sites. The sample sizes are listed in the table below.
These samples were collected at varies times of the year including, spring, summer, fall, and
winter over twenty three hours for five to seven days for the three megacities and the reference
city. Samples for the background sites were collected over thirty to thirty six hours on two
occasions. A particulate sampler was used for PM2.5 and PM10 sampling (Zhang et al., 2016).

people in the middle quintile pay 25%. [And] the poorest fifth pays 13% (Barro). And yet some
politicians, like Donald Trump, think the solution to resolving our country s debt is by taxing the
top percent more. In reality, the United Statesshould have a flat taxrate due to the fact that it is the
fairest plan and the hard work pertained by the top percent should be valued. The way flat tax

fact of the matter is that its all for the public. Why should you make high income citizens pay for

these projects, since after all there for everyones use. Why would you penalize people that

11. Impact Of Global Trade On Developing Countries
Global (international) trade is one of the most common norms happening all around the world
today. This is one of the core factors that have, over the years, lead the world to becoming more
and more globalized. Globalization is what our society has come to there is always
interdependence with one another. A nation on its own cannot possibly provide for, and meet all
their citizen s desires, especially now with a greater number of immigrants, hence a growing
multicultural population. Take for instance this example: you enter into a supermarket anywhere in
the world today, and what you will find are products and goods from just about every part of the
globe; whether it be Greece, China, Italy, India you name it. However, that said, what... Show more

They each specialize in something or the other. For instance, Canada is a resource rich economy; it
exports many of their natural resources to other countries whose economy doesn t have a strong
sector in natural resources, and likewise imports other goods/services from them. Therefore, Global
trade, to some extent, is very crucial for all countries regardless of developmental status. It makes
greater sense to always trade with other nations. International trade allows each nation to specialize
in a good or service that they produce best. Two economic concepts are needed to understand the
issue fully: Comparative advantage and absolute advantage (Frank, Bernanke Osberg, 2012, P.
31). Comparative advantage is when each country concentrates on the activities for which their
opportunity cost is lowest, and their overall output is maximized (more productive than the other
nation in that particular good/service) (Frank et al, 2012, P. 32). These depend on a country s
accumulated physical and human capital, difference in cultures social institutions, as well as
many other factors (Frank et al, 2012, P. 34). This concept encourages countries to specialize in
the production of goods and services in which they have a comparative (also called as
competitive) advantage in. On the other hand, Absolute advantage is when one country as a whole
can produce more of a certain good/service faster than the other (takes relatively less time to
produce) (Frank et al, 2012, P.

12. Reputation And Social Status In Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
The Importance of Reputation and Social Status in the Victorian Era
In this essay, I am going to stereotype the ideals of the Victorian era and use this knowledge to
examine Robert Stevenson s, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Oscar Wilde s, The Importance of
Being Earnest. I will argue that Jack in The Importance of Being Earnest and Dr. Jekyll in Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were both highly influenced by their own reputation, along with their
families, and social status. I will discuss Victorian values and how they affected Dr. Jekyll s and
Jack s reputation. The paper will continue to argue how and why Jack and Dr. Jekyll were
influenced by their ideals to improve their reputation and their social status. The Victorian era

In her article Is Female to Male as Nature is to Culture, anthropologist, Sherry Ortner claims that
woman is being identified with [. . .] something that every culture devalues [. . .] and that is nature

motherhood with nature, thus devaluing Yubaba s role as a working motherin Japanese society. We
can see this devaluation from the very beginning when Chihiro and her familydrive into the forest

In the film, we see Yubaba adores Bo through her immediate change in tone of voice from
rasping to cheerful when she speaks to him. Furthermore, she rushes immediately to comfort
him when he cries and when she realizes he has gone missing, Yubaba s torment is depicted
through her breathing fire out of her mouth. Yubaba s fire breathing depiction emphasizes
Yubaba s overprotectiveness of Bo, showing her strong valuing of his presence. However, this
strong valuing of Bo s presence shows Bo is being used (Hatcher, 122). Because society strongly
associates the female identity with being caring and nurturing (Ueno, 15), Yubaba loses part of
her identity when Bo is taken from her she loses the person who depends on her the most and
who gives her life purpose. Thus, we can see why she cares about him so much and goes through
great extents to protect him, like covering Bo s room with an immense amount of pillows and
padding. Yubaba also prevents Bo from going out, which we find out when Bo accuses Chihiro
of trying to make him sick: You came in here to make me sick [. . .] you ll get sick if you go outside

14. Mind and Soul
In the reading by Richard Swinburne, he evaluates the mortality of the soul and its interaction with
the human body. His position is best described as attributing the soul to a light bulb, and the brain
to a functioning socket:
If the socket (brain) is damaged or the current turned off, the light (soul) will not shine. So, too, the
soul will function if it is plugged into a functioning brain. Destroy the brain [...] and the soul will
cease to function, remaining inert.
Given his position, Swinburne s idea on the role of the mind and the soul, as well as the mortality
of the soul are what I will be exploring. For Swinburne, the soul is essentially what our mind is. It
is the part of us that analyzes information, thinks on it, and ... Show more content on

Now there is the mortality of the soul, given that Swinburne s definition of the soul is similar to
my definition of the mind I will focus on that. I believe the human mind passes form body to soul
upon death. But what happens after that I do not know. I feel that our minds on this new plane of
existence cannot be understood as they are on this plane. Therefore I cannot comment on the
possibility that they are mortal or immortal. There might be some inherent change in how our
minds work once this transition takes place that may alter its functionality so much that it is
nothing like it used to be, and thereby the original mind may be considered deceased. Or it may
be that we go on transitioning from state to state forever.Relating the mind to Swinburne s views,
he discusses the soul in terms of the laws of nature. In my opinion, I do not believe the above
mentioned relationship follows the rules of nature as we understand them. We cannot say with
certainty what the rules of nature are when discussing the soul, simply because the concept of it is
such a complex one. Our minds are such complex things that we do not fully understand. Overall I
tend to disagree with Swinburne on his ideas of the mortality of the soul and the relationship of the
soul and body. In my belief, that we cannot definitively say the mind is mortal or immortal because
it exists differently than the rest of our body. We can examine our hand, cut

15. Family Therapy And The Family
Family therapy is essential to working with clients because it helps social workers connect the
patterns within each family. According to Nichols, family therapy considers how problems may be
a product of the relationships surrounding them (p. 50). It can help health professionals understand
why there is problematic behavior in familymembers through the context of the family dynamics
and relationships. Family therapy is how we aid our clients in understanding these relationships,
and how we help them solve and work through the family problems. This paper will discuss, assess,
and provide treatment goals for the Taylor family using the Structural Family Therapy perspective.
Family Intervention Model Structural Family Therapy and Bowen Family Therapy are two useful
intervention models that help families with their problems. However, each model addresses these
problems in a different way. The Structural Family Therapy model looks at the problem through the
relationships within each of the family members and the subsets of the family (Fredricks, 2014).
Structural Family Therapy recognizes that the family may operate according to generic or
distinctive house rules. The point of Structural Family Therapy is to remodel the family system into
a healthier one. Bowen Family Therapy looks at how the family dynamics, values, morals, and
relationships are passed down through each generation, and how it affects the overall family unit
(Brown, 1999). It looks at the multigenerational

credibility. I will also utilize my personal experiences from when I entered Bowdoin as a first

site infrastructure impacts the landscape and terrain, under intense public scrutiny however, is the
impact of disposed wastewater from stimulation operations.
2.0POTENTIAL RISKS TO ENVIRONMENTAL MEDIA
In order to better understand the consequence and impact of stimulation on the environment and
ultimately public health, it is essential to consider pathways and risks to sensitive environmental
receptors groundwater, surface water and air.
2.1Potential Risks to Groundwater
In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the purpose of hydraulic fracturing is to create secondary fractures in addition to naturally
occurring within the subsurface, there is a general concern that this process might extend
fractures to link aquifers. The chances of this occurring are likely remote, since the vertical
distance separating the Marcellus Shale from most aquifers is usually much greater than the
length of the fractures induced during hydraulic fracturing. In addition, several thousands of feet
of rock layers typically overlie the Marcellus Shale and form a cap to restrict flow. It should be
noted, however that if the shallow portions of the Marcellus Shale are developed, then the
thickness of the overlying rocks would be less and the distance from the Marcellus to drinking
water aquifers would be shorter, posing more of a risk to groundwater (DOE, 2009).
Economically, operators of the gas field have an incentive to maintain fractures in the gas producing
shale. Extending the fractures into a surrounding formation might allow saline fluids or brines to
enter the induced fracture and flow into the gas producing portion of the shale, which could
significantly hamper gas production. Even if hydraulically induced fractures extend into overlying
formations, the possibility for fluids to leak upward into an aquifer is remote, unless those fractures
are also connected to some other pathway,

Functions of the Federal Response Plan The Federal Response Plan (FRP) delivers Federal
assistance to disaster areas or when an emergency is declared by state or local authorities. The
Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief act establishes the structure and process for the FRP to deliver
federal assistance. The FRP establishes the policies, concepts, and planning for federal response to
emergencies. The plan also provides recovery protocols and resources to aid in ensuring public

Planning also takes into consideration the level of state and local demand for outside help. The
most devastating disasters may require the full range of Federal response and recovery assistance.
Less damaging disasters may require only partial Federal response and recovery assistance, and
some disasters may require only Federal recovery assistance (p.10).
Concepts
State and local responders formulate the concepts within the FRP around disasters and
emergencies that can be handled the Federal Government is called on to provide supplemental
assistance when the consequences of a disaster exceed State and local capabilities (p.11). If
assistance is required by State, and local agencies, the Federal Government has the ability to
deploy a wide range of assets to aid state and local efforts during the disaster. The Federal
Government has a large contingency of support personnel, teams, operating facilities, specialized
equipment, and assistance programs that allow for disaster operations. The FRP describes the

The native Indians surrounding New England were very closely related in culture but lacked
political unity. Most of the tribes were subdivided into many bands. Each of these bands would
wage wars against each other although causing few casualties the defeated were humiliated and had
to pay tribute to the winner. These Indians were much less demanding from nature as they moved
between locations as seasons passed. As the New England colonists saw this they appointed
themselves to judge how much land they needed as they took the rest. The Indians did not
understand how this working expecting it to be an agreement to share the land although shocked

had been gravely devastated by colonial assault. Even though these Indians were supposedly part of
the colonial society the were very untrusted. Plymouth later provoking another confrontation with

23. The Montgomery Bus Boycott Of 1955-56
The Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 56 was triggered when Rosa Parks refused to give up her
bus seat to a white man in the city of Montgomery, Alabama, on December 1st, 1955. The event
saw that around 95% of Montgomery s black citizens refused to ride the bus, lasting 381 days.
This was an extremely important event as this is identified as the beginning of the American
Black Civil Rights movement. I will be discussing the causes of this event the Jim Crow laws,
Rosas refusal to move, and the support of the NAACP as well as the consequences; the suffering
of Rosa and Raymond and their supporters, Negro economic power and Martin Luther King Jr.

Another key cause of the Montgomery Bus Boycott was Rosa Park s refusal to move from her
bus seat, after being told to move for a white person. On December 1st, 1985, after coming home
from work, Rosa sat in the black section of the bus, and was ushered to leave her seat when a
white man boarded. This was a result of there being no white seats available at the time. Rosa
had already skipped the first bus that had passed her, as she saw it was full, and she had no
energy in her to stand. When she was told to move, Rosa argued that she was too tired after her
full day of work, and refused to get up. Later, Rosa stated that her real reasoning for not moving
was because she was tired of the lack of equality in Montgomery. The police were called after
Rosa repeatedly told the bus driver she would not move, and Rosa was arrested that night, and
thrown into jail. She was fined $10, as well as $4 for court fees. Ed Nixon, who was the head of the
Montgomery NAACP, bailed her out, and they then drew attention to her case. Her arrest sparked
an uproar in the black community of Montgomery, and this was incentive for the decision that they
needed a solution to end this discrimination, and got involved with the boycott they had planned.

April 2 (Bloomberg) KPMG International, which oversees the fourth largest U.S. accounting firm,

failed in its role as gatekeeper.
Negligent audits and reviews by KPMG LLP, the U.S. member firm of KPMG International, led
to New Century s collapse, according to lawsuits filed yesterday in state court in Los Angeles and
federal court in New York. The suits, filed against both KPMG International and KPMG LLP, seek

KPMG advised New Century to alter the way it calculated reserves for repurchasing mortgage loans
that didn t meet certain conditions, according to the Los Angeles complaint. New Century s
calculations for required reserves were wrong and violated generally accepted accounting principles,
the complaint said.
Mistakes in calculation grew to more than $300 million and repurchase requests soared to $8
billion once New Century s true financial condition was known, the complaint said. The company
could no longer borrow money to finance its lending business and collapsed owing billions.
Professional Standards
Any claim that we acquiesced to client demands is unsupportable, Ginsburg said. KPMG acted in
accordance with professional standards in New Century, and we will vigorously defend our audit

Last year, a report by bankruptcy court examiner Michael J. Missal concluded KPMG could be
accused of professional and negligent misrepresentation although the firm had possible legal

Warren Buffett, entrepreneur and investor once said, It s only when the tide goes out that you

about when he said this line, you would have either had to be there or one day have the
opportunity to ask him yourself. However, in the context of comparing this quote to economics, or
perhaps banking, one could say that what he meant was that the choices that are made today might
not be judged until later down the road. For example, a recessionis not something that just happens
over night. In the event leading up to a recession, there are many factors and every recession is
unique in their own way. As for the great recession in 2008, the causes included subprime lending,
and greed amongst lenders and borrowers. Before jumping straight into the causes of the 2008
recession, first you must be informed of the history in previous recessions America has had to face.
Since the Great Depressionended in mid 1930 s, America has had to overcome around eleven
recessions. Now some might argue that not all recorded recessions were worthy of getting the tittle
as an official recession. Many will simply say it was slight hiccup in the economy because of the
short six to eight month duration of the smaller recessions. When divided over the years It seems
that the United Stateshas one to two recessions every decade. However, everyone of the short

since the early 1980 s it is still a problem. Juvenile homicide has lowered in the recent years, but
the fact that it still happens is chilling to most Americans. Most Americans believe that juveniles

In the recent years many criminologists have used three different demographics used to describe
juvenile homicide offenders. Those are: juvenile gang members, between 15 17 years in age, and
mostly males (Directorate, 2002).
They are often gang members; when gangs recruit members to join their gang they will often
target the young, because they can mold them to believe that the gang is the main thing in their
life. If they get in the gang they are more likely to begin to carry guns, and deal drugs compared
to juveniles who are not gang members. In data gathered from interviews of arrested juveniles in
the Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) study, The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention states that juvenile gang members are reasonably more likely to carry a gun on a day
to day basis compared to the juveniles which are not involved in gangs (31% percent compared to
20%) (James C. Howell, 1999). With saying that, James C. Howell, and Scott R. Decker found that
the juvenile homicide problem in St. Louis was mainly largely a gun homicide problem (James C.
Howell, 1999).
The average age of a juvenile homicide offender is in their upper teens. According to The Office of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention from 2006 and 2008, 90% of the juvenile homicide
offenders were 15 17 years old, compared to only 10% were 6 14 years old. High School

27. Characteristics Of Martin Luther King Jr. And Adolf Hitler
Before this semester I always knew there were many characteristics and deferent types of
leaders. Typically when I thought of a leader, I would think of a team leader. A leader that
involves the creation of a vivid picture of its goals, where it is heading and what it will stand for.
The vision inspires and provides a strong sense of purpose and direction. In the easy sense when I
thought of a leader I would think of a quarterback for a football team, commander in the army, and
or a bossof a company. I also knew there was a visionary leader because that s what type of leader I
am. When I think of whose a good leader I think of two people, Martin Luther King Jr. and Adolf
Hitler. These two people were two totally different leaders but they were both great leaders.
Martin Luther Kind JR. led the Civil Rights movements in the United States. He used
nonviolent, or peaceful, protest to try to get equal rights for African Americans. He aroused
white and black alike to protest racial discrimination, poverty, and war. He would give amazing
speeches such as I have a dream in front of 250,000 people. Hitler was a good leader but
obviously was a terrible person. Hitler turned hundred of thousands of people into Nazis. Some key
areas that Hitler was good at was his vision, change management, compassion, charisma, and

The Palace of Versailles is one of the most infamous works of European architecture known to
man throughout history. Brought to life by King Louis XIV, otherwise known as the Sun King,
his reign of absolutism directly affected the architecture and design of the Palace, turning it into a
lasting symbol for absolutism. Louis XIV had the longest reign in European history, ruling from
1643 to 1715 for a total of 72 years. He was born on September 5th, 1638, succeeding his father on
the throne at the age of four. Because he was too young to rule Francehimself, his mother, Anne of
Austria, became regent and ruled in his place. During his mother s rule, the noble and judges of the

A direct quote from Louis XIV himself illustrates the induction of the new political institution: Up
to this moment I have been pleased to entrust the government of my affairs to the late Cardinal. It
is now time that I govern them myself. ( Louis XIV: Absolutism, Steingrad) He began his rule in
1661 at the age of 23. Many feared that Louis XIV was a bit too immature to assume the throne,
including his mother, but he took his role as an absolute monarch quite seriously, bordering on
excessively. Rather than rely on high nobility and princes, Louis called on ministers from nobles of
newer aristocratic families. If any one were to step out of line, Louis had them arrested and
imprisoned. For example, when his minister of finances, Nicholas Fouquet, began to boast about his
authority and wealth, Fouquet was immediately incarcerated. ( Louis XIV: Absolutism, Steingrad)
Religion was another source of tension. Louis XIV did not want Protestants practicing their faith in
Catholic France. His motto in regards to religion was one king, one law, one faith, encapsulating the
ideals of absolutism. He believed that the existence of the Protestants undermined his authority, and
began attempting to entice them to conversion by offering rewards. Eventually, he moved to
forced conversions. Louis XIV was a proponent of Gallicanism, which is the belief that the
monarchy held certain rights over the Catholic Church, regardless of the papal powers. Pope
Innocent XI denounced King Louis XIV and in response, Louis ordered the French clergy to
establish the Declaration of Gallican Liberties. The document maintained that the pope s authority
was limited to spiritual matters and that even in spiritual matters, the pope was subject to the
decisions of a general council. ( Louis XIV: Absolutism, Steingrad) This caused a large amount of
tension between the king and church, to the point where a split was possible. However,

Jackson Pollock s life began in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. His father, Leroy was a farmer and later
in life became a surveyor for the government. Because of his father s job as a government
surveyor, Pollock was able to travel to many places with his father, even experiencing some
Native American culture with which he attributes some of his art pieces to. When Pollock got
older he enrolled himself at the Students League in New York in 1929. He studied here under the
hands of regionalist painter, Thomas Benton. During this time, Pollock created mostly realist
modern American art with influences coming from Mexican muralist painters and surrealist. It
was not until 1939, while visiting The Museum of Modern Art in New York City that Pollock
changed his art style. Within this museum was an exhibit called, Picasso: 40 Years of His Art that
had over 300 works of art in addition to his anti war morals. This led Pollock to the realization and
admiration of the power of European modernism. This realization created his new style of semi

The purpose of this memo is to give you a better understanding on what revisions were made to the
original technical writing guide and why I redesigned it in the way that I did.
Summary
This document as whole, was missing a lot of crucial information that I felt needed to be included
in a technical writing guide. As a whole, I believe that my redesign of the document will prove to
be more useful and more navigable than the original that was presented. In the discussion, I will be
analyzing each part of the guide that I felt needed to be revised.
Discussion
One of the first things that will stick out from the guide is the color scheme chosen for both the
text and background, blue and green text on a beige background respectively. Since this is
supposed to be an academic resource for engineering students, I felt it was most appropriate to
have a white background with black text, thus helping to bolster the professionalism of the
document. When I first opened the document, I felt as if it was very distracting and possibly may
have been written for those in high school, but upon further inspection, I discovered that this was
written for students at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Unless this is a cultural
difference of some kind, I feel as if the author merely wanted to attract readers to use the guide.
Even after fixing the color scheme, it was still very hard to navigate the document.

Thematic analysis
After a process of individual analysis of the selected studies, the articles were grouped together
according to recurrent themes that emerged from the findings. In this literature review, three major
themes were identified which include; window displays, music and shop crowding.
Finding
Window displays
In relation to window display, three studies reported that there is a positive relationship between
consumers buying behavior and window display (Ali Hasnu 2013, Karbasivar Yarahmadi 2011 and
Tendai Crispen 2009). According to Ali Hasnu (2013, p.7) consumers buying decision is influenced
by the physical attractiveness of store displays. Consumers develop their first impressions by the
store displays which emotionally attract them to the product and buy that product (Ali Hasnu 2013,
p.7). Similarly, Tendai Crispen (2009, p. 107) reported that attractive window displays increases
sales as consumers purchase unplanned products. Moreover, the finding of Karbasivar Yarahmadi
(2011) study indicated that window display has strong effect on encouraging consumers to buying
more and enjoying their shopping time. In order to trigger shopping among consumers, store
managers must ensure attractive store displays (Ali Hasnu 2013, p. 7).

Abstract: In Toni Morrison s Song of Solomon, names have great implication. Language is
extremely personal and deeply rooted in culture. Names are an integral part of language, and they

The concept of naming in Song of Solomon was first introduced through a local road known as
Not Doctor Street. The street s title was commonplace after years of colloquial reference from
locals, but never truly official:
Town maps registered the street as Mains Avenue, but the only colored doctor in the city had
lived and died on that street, and when he moved there in 1866 his patients took to calling the
street, which none of them lived on or near, Doctor Street. Later, when other Negroes moved
there, and when the postal service became a popular means of transferring messages among
them, envelopes from Louisiana, Virginia, Alabama and Georgia began to arrive addressed to
people on Doctor Street. The post office workers returned these envelopes or passed them on to
the Dead Letter Office. Then in 1918, when colored men were being drafted, a few gave their
address at the recruitment office as Doctor Street. In that way, the name acquired a quasi official
status. (4)
However, the status did not last long because city legislators disapproved and posted numerous
bulletins in local establishments stating that the road, had always and would always be known as
Mains Avenue and not Doctor Street (4). Locals were then able to both obey the local ordindances
and satisfy their interests by referring to the road as Not Doctor Street. The residents were able to

horrible places that existed. The conditions in these institutions were barely livable. The workers
were also mean to the patients and did many awful things to them. There were too many patients
and not enough nurses and doctors. This made the nurses work harder and put a lot more stress on
them ( Pennhurst State ). In the 1950s, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was occupied by over

39. Speech About Flamingo
Flamingos are a type of wading bird that live in areas of large shallow lakes, lagoons, mangrove
swamps, tidal flats, and sandy islands.
Flamingos are famous for their bright pink feathers, stilt like legs, and S shaped neck.
Flamingos tend to live a long life in the wild though with an average of 20 to 30 years. In captivity
some of them have lived up to 40 years.
There are six species of flamingo: greater flamingo, lesser flamingo, Chilean flamingo, Andean
flamingo,
James (or puna) flamingo and American (or Caribbean) flamingo.

Flight speed of a flock of flamingos can reach 50 to 60 kilometer per hour (31 to 37 miles per
hour). Flamingos have been known to fly 500 to 600 kilometers (311 373 miiles) each night
between habitats.
The majority of lakes where flamingos live have extremely high salt concentrations. The only
source of fresh water for some of these birds comes from boiling geysers. Flamingos are capable of
drinking water at temperatures that approach the boiling point.
They excrete salt through salt glands in the nostrils. Flamingos eat larva, small insects, blue green
and red algae, mollusks, crustaceans and small fish.
A flamingo s pink or reddish feather, leg, and facial coloration come from a diet high in alpha and
beta carotenoid pigments, including canthaxanthin. The richest sources of carotenoids are found in
the algae and various invertebrates that make up the bulk of a flamingo s diet.
Scientists aren t sure why do flamingos stand on one leg. There is less heat lost through the leg if it
is tucked next to the bird s body; however, this behavior is also seen in hot climates. Another
explanation is more mundane: it s probably a comfortable position for

Petrovich attempts to find his place within his generation and to distinguish himself from the old

novel, Arkady follows his friend, Yevgeny Bazarov, and the ideology of nihilism
. Nihilism is a
philosophy that rejects all social practices, principles, and rules. As a nihilist, Arkady believes that

Arkady always seems to say that nihilists believe certain things and that Bazarov states particular
facts, yet Arkady gives the impression that he struggles to embrace these same convictions deep
inside of himself. Arkady accepts nihilism to fit in with his generation and to gain the respect and
friendship of Bazarov. Arkady never proclaims his own conviction in nihilism as undeniably as
Bazarov. As the noveldevelops and Arkady and Bazarov travel together, Arkady matures to
become his own individual. Arkady eventually decides to reject Bazarov and the falseness of his
principles. This is evident when Arkady shows his appreciation for music and when he defends
his father and his uncle to Bazarov when Bazarov criticizes their aristocratic ways and
romanticism. Ultimately, Arkady s complete growth into his own individual self is seen when he
decides to renounce a life without emotion and tradition that Bazarov preached. Arkady breaks
free of Bazarov s spell and shows that he holds the same values as his father when he falls in love

43. The Silance Of Music In Alfred Hitchcock s Vrtigo
Vertigo is a 1958 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and
Barbara Bel Geddes. The film follows the acrophobic, retired San Francisco detective, John
Scottie Ferguson (Stewart) who is hired to trail his friend s wife, Madeleine (Novak), but falls
in love with her in the process. When Madeleine dies in what is deemed a suicide, John becomes
depressed and begins to obsess over Judy (Novak), who looks exactly like the Madeleine he
knew. After changing Judy s appearance to be a doppelganger of Madeleine, John comes to find
out that he had actually fallen in love with Judy pretending to be Madeleine, because she was
part of a plot to murder the real Madeleine. One aspect of the film that is interesting is the way
the balance of music and dialogue add to the suspense of the story. As stated in James Berardinelli
s review of Vertigo, There are numerous, lengthy passages that pass without dialogue (most of
these occur while John is trailing Madeleine), and Herrmann s music sustains Hitchcock s
carefully crafted tone. As well as to create these interesting scenes that rely almost entirely on
visuals to tell the story, the music has an important role of building the feeling of suspense,
complete with the typical thriller crescendos used to foreshadow a big event. This film has many
technical aspects that help it stand apart from others and the musical choices made are a clear
example of this. Another aspect of this film that is fantastic is the

44. Geisha Ideology
The concept of geisha originated in Japan in the 1600s. The initial geisha culture was constructed as
female entertainers, who act as hostesses to serve, entertain and perform for male clients, usually by
traditional Japanese dance and instruments. According to Barkers (2006), our first class readings on
Questions of Cultureand Ideology, the everyday lived character of culture is a whole way of life .
This is apparent in the Japanese culture, and the Japanese s ideologies of geishas are refined, well
mannered and respected professions (Akita, 2009). As Akita mentions in her study, Japanese girls

46. An Investigation On American Civil Union
According to police, officers nobody has the right to record. Whether it is publicly, or an
investigation being done outside on the street. Now a days we do not have the right to do
anything outside in the public. My question is why? If we all have the right to do whatever we
want. Many city journalists even people have been arrested for not even committing a crime but
simply filming. You would ask me is this right? Well I would say no it is not right. According to
the law which truly states ( Know Your Rights: Photographers. American Civil Union. ACLU,
July 2014. Web. 3 Sep 2014). That we all have the right to photograph, and film while being in
public being anywhere and at any time. The video I selected talks about how a civilian is having a
discussion with a policeofficer and how the police officersays he is not allowed to film. Watching
the video made me see how police officers don t respect at all. They tend to lie a lot and change
everything around when another police officer comes to help them out. They harass and detain
people with unnecessary reasons.
Although police officers tend to know about the law seems like they really need to get a recap
about what the law states. I believe police officers are there to protect and watch over the public.
But to react in a way that is erroneous and so unfair is just not accurate for me. The video I watch
is about a civilian who was filming traffic stop. The officer approaches him and tells the civilian to

Given this situation I would most definitely use a shop floor scheduling rule that caters to the
major issues facing this situation. The fact we can see the bombs but they are of different
variety plays a major factor. We are also faced with a timeline to work with which will determine
what scheduling rule is selected. EDD would be select for several reasons; this would prioritize
what bombs need to be defused first. From there, workers can be assigned to getting that work
done. Completion time is relatively low with high

The fan in the play Lady Windermere s Fan is a symbol of Lady Windermere s trust. It was first
given to her by her husband, who she trusted very much at the time. When the Duchess of
Berwick lead her to believe that her husband was cheating on her and sending a woman by the
name Mrs. Margret Erlynne money, she confronted her husband. When confronting him he asks
her to invite her to the birthday ball she was throwing that evening. The fan is brought into the
scene as Lady Windermere threatens to hit Mrs. Erlynne with her lovely new fan if she dared to
step foot into the ball. Yes, you gave me this fan to day; it was your birthday present. If that
woman crosses my threshold, I shall strike her across the face with it. (Wilde, 20) This represents

Tactical Leadership VS Organizational Leadership
There are certain things that you need to know as a leader, I will explain some of the differences

As an effective leader one has to be especially close to their subordinates in order to provide them
with the necessary purpose, direction and motivation to complete their assigned task. The tactical
level is usually found at the company or platoon level, this leader is always looking to accomplish
the short term goals in support of the long term mission. Tactical leaders must know how to solve
problems quickly and without hesitation, they have more direct influence over soldiers because
they are in the trenches with them. At this stage the leader has to council, correct and led their
soldiers through the direct approach of leadership.
Organization leadership This leadership style is where the leader actually has to plan and
synchronize training in order that the small units are able to produce the tactical into the
operational action. At the organization level a leader is not in a traditional leadership position
when they are directly in charge of soldiers. Leaders in this style are the one whom establish

50. Compare And Contrast Confucianism And Legalism
Philosophies Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism were the three main philosophies in ancient
China for a form of government. I state that Daoism is the most effective form of government
because it is based around balance: balance in nature and opposites of the universe. Daoism has
the highest number of followers at around 20 million people among the three philosophies.
Daoism is concerned with helping people live in harmony with their self. Legalism was very
different from both Confucianism and Daoism because Legalism was the belief that people
needed to be controlled because they were evil. Legalism is found in China and was founded by
Han Feize. While it is unknown when Legalism was established, it is known that Han Feize was
born in 280 B.C. so that gives a general time when legalism started. Legalism didn t deal with
much religious concerns but was more of a political philosophy instead. Citizens were seen to be
responsible for actions of one another. A person who is considered guilty, their relatives and
neighbors should be punished as well. This was a way to make sure that the laws are followed.
The laws are strict with harsh punishments. People who spy on others and report anything that they
do wrong to the authorities are thought to be doing right of the law. Both Legalism and
Confucianism are belief systems within a group of people, not religions, and both are intended to
lead to an orderly way of life, how they approach their teachings are complete opposed.
