How To Produce an Attractive Sketch
The hands of an artist are valuable as they dance on plain, white
canvases, regenerating them into an extraordinary burst of colours that whisper
emotions into our eyes. These resplendent colours are able to tell tales of joy or
stories of despair; anything the artist wishes to express. It is the raw emotion in
Van Gogh’s paintings that captured the attention of the world for many
generations. But honestly, his hands were no different to yours or mine. They
were a gift from God, beautiful limbs that are destined to do great things – and so
are yours. Believe it or not, simpletons like us are able to construct exquisite
masterpieces with just a few simple steps. The easiest form of art to start from
would be sketching whereby it is a rapid freehand drawing not usually intended
as the finished work. Sketching is widely used by architects and art students as a
medium of communication in which their ideas come to life. If you an aspiring
artist, read on to find out how to produces an attractive sketch.
A surgeon needs retractors to open up the skin whereas an artist needs a
pencil to turn the images in his head into reality. Your local art shop will provide a
variety of stationaries of the highest quality; tools ranging from erasers to a set of
markers that cost a fortune. But for a sketch, tools like these shouldn’t be of your
concern, unless they are too tempting to leave behind on the store’s shelves. As
a beginner, all you would need is a pencil, an eraser and a piece of paper. These
three items are essential to any design student and must be carried around at all
times. A comfortable workspace is also ideal for an aspiring artist. Sketching in a
cramped area is similar to developing negatives in a bright environment;
pointless. Make sure the surface you work on is even in order to produce a
premier sketching. With all these checked off the list, you’re well on your way into
creating an amazing sketch.
As children, we could easily get lost on a boat that floats mid-air in the
vacuum of our imagination where the world was bright and colourful, and worries
were almost non-existent. That made-up world was filled with crazy ideas, most
of them making very little sense. But as an aspiring artist, without a doubt, among
these insane visions is one breakthrough idea. The key to finding the perfect
inspiration is by taking note of every idea that whizzes through the brain. These
random ideas are to be solidified by thorough research of online articles or books
from the local library. Spend as much time as you can analyzing these ideas,
turning something nonsensical into a logical concept that can be used. While you
are researching, more and more of these psychotic visions are dropped until you
are left with one that is sensible. This is the breakthrough idea that you have
been searching for, so hold on to it.
You’ve got your idea and tools in hand, now it’s finally time to actually start
sketching. Begin your sketch with lightly drawing outline of the object. Work your
way from the outside towards the inside, slowly creating your masterpiece. The
trick to a precise sketch is breaking down the object t simpler shapes; circles,
squares or triangles. Our brain is used to these straightforward shapes thus
allowing us to drawing more accurately. Once you are satisfied with the
“skeleton”, fill in the shades according to where the light will most likely fall and
produce shadows. Add textures to the sketch to replicate a more realistic
environment. As humans, we are prone to making mistakes as we work. It is best
to embrace these mistakes and adjust them. Sketching would require a lot of
altering, and it is absolutely normal to suddenly have a huge pile of eraser dust
all over the table. Keep modifying the sketch until you find perfection.
While sketching, one must live by the words of the late Friedrich
Nietzsche, ‘You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.’ The
chaos of the rough sketch can easily dishearten an artist from continuing his
masterpiece. Let the confidence boil in you as you succumb to the elegant
movement of your hands. Don’t forget to be proud of your hard work as it is one
of a kind.
