Characterism In The Grass Is Singing By Doris Lessing
The most creative of contemporary British writers and the recipient of more than twenty literary prizes
and awards, Doris May Tayler was born in Kermanshah, Persia and grew up in Southern Rhodesia
until 1949. She came to England with the youngest of her three children and with the manuscript of
her first novel, The Grass Is Singing. The novel was published in 1950, and gained its author
immediate success. Since then she has never stopped writing, producing a huge number of novels,
short stories, personal narratives, plays, and poems investigating on extraordinary variety of themes.
The years spent in Africa influenced Lessing deeply as a writer.
Ruth Whittaker, one of the readers of Lessing s works, in his work Doris Lessing commented this
novel as, an extraordinary first novel in its assured treatment of its unusual subject matter... Doris
Lessing questions the entire values of Rhodesian white colonial society (88).
The Grass Is Singing narrates the life events of Mary Turner shaped by colonial experience, in the
Rhodesian veld and South Africa, and questions the entire values of the Rhodesian white colonial
society. Lessing spins an intricate text, interweaving Mary s life and struggle in a colonial world. In
vibrant details, Lessing describes the effects of a society under colonization a culture polluted by the
rigid infrastructure of patriarchy giving rise to gender and race discriminations. The author traces
Mary s psychological growth during the numerous phases of

Meaning And Coping Of Stress
The meaning, effects, and coping of stress
Stress is a state of mental, emotional strain, or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding
circumstances. (Webster) Stress can be explained as when people are experiencing difficulties in
handling situations that they are lacking abilities or knowledge on how to deal with. Stress is the body
s way of responding to a demand or threat. These situations that cause stress are called stressors. Some
stressors can be a death of a loved one, divorce, and other physically and mentally demanding
situations. When we are feeling stressed the heart beats faster, pupils dilate, muscles tense up, and the
body releases adrenaline. Stress can be good or bad. Stress can be a positive reinforcement causing
people to be aware of surroundings and circumstances. Stress can also be helpful, in certain situations
it can give someone a little push by giving energy or alertness. There are two main different types of
stress that have different causes and effects, which are called eustress and distress.
Eustress is the good kind of stress. Without eustress, we would not be prepared to deal with
excitement and/or challenge in our lives. Eustress encourages our success and achievements. A person
can feel eustress when excited and there is no threat or fear. People will also feel eustress when they
are being motivated to complete a task. An example of eustress is studying for final exams, practicing
before a basketball game, and doing your best

Reflection Of The Observation Of Students In The...
The opportunity to observe students in the elementary school I once attended was very eye opening.
The elementary school teaches children who attend this school are kindergarten to fifth grade. The
classroom I am observed are students between nine and ten years old and are currently in the fourth
grade. When I arrived on campus there were many things that have changed and the relationship
between teachers and students is a lot closer now than from what I can remember from the late 1990s
and early 2000 years. The school now displays murals and colorful art projects designed by students
and displayed throughout the hallways.
When I arrived on campus, I was greeted by a group of volunteer parents and one security guard. They
were very friendly and directed me to the main office so I could check in. I then met with the principal
who was already aware of my observation and was delighted to walk me to the classroom of my
observation. The current principle Rita Exposito began in 2010 and has been with the school ever
since. She explained to me some of the changes around the school he believed I was not aware of and
gave me a brief background on how the mission of the elementary changed since becoming Andrew
Jackson Stem Dual Language Academy.
Jackson Elementary School began its transition to fostering a better learning environment fall 2012
within a kindergarten class. From the first class, they then received a higher budget from the Pasadena

My Personal Experience
MY personal experience was visiting Busch Gardens for the first time in Tampa Florida. The scenery
was extremely beautiful and a very playful place to enjoy during the holidays. As I walked in the smell
of different food grabbed my attention. The food court was very clean, but I couldn t eat yet due to the
fact that I wanted to hop on the roller coaster. The roller coasters were so huge it was nothing
compared to the fun spot in Orlando Florida. My skin started to shiver because they were going too
fast, people were screaming and I wasn t sure if it was due to happiness or being scared. However, I
eat for an hour contemplating if I wanted to go on the roller coasters. My siblings were getting
aggravated because I was scared. I finally got over my anxiety and tried with my siblings. As I
buckled my belt, I was as scared as a cat shivering like I was a baby. I was screaming so loud that my
head started to hurt. A very unusual feeling was in my stomach, I waited to throw up so bad but I had
to keep it in until I got off the ride. Even though I threw up the ride was actually not that bad.
Surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Firstly, I discovered the thrilling launch coaster. It is a family spin new
coaster. I was bold enough to try it first. The ride was so fun I kept on going on back until I got tired
of it. Surprisingly, I got extremely hungry. So I walked to the food court trying to find some good
food. Everything looked so delicious wish

Essay on The Bloody Chamber
The role of women in the gothic genre is as victims always subjected to male authority , compare and
contrast to which this interpretation is relevant to your three chosen texts. By Kristina Addis Within
My Last Duchess, The Bloody Chamber and Dracula, there is evidence to suggest that women within
the gothic genre as portrayed as victims of male authority, as well as evidence to disprove this
argument, instead suggesting that it is the women within the Gothic genre which makes themselves
victims. Angela Carter is particularly interested in the portrayal of women as victims of male
aggression as a limiting factor in the feminist perspective of the time [i] Carter, with her modern twist
on traditional fairytales places a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this point she simply finds no other way but to accept the stereotypical view of a young innocent
girl in a relationship with an experienced man, another example of women being victims of male
authority. The key to the bloody chamber is the key to her selfhood and subjugation that will
ultimately kill her. The protagonist s husband clearly considers her an object of exchange and plans to
inscribe upon her his continuing tale of punishment for wives disobedience [viii] again showing how
women make themselves victims of their own behaviour, Helen Simpson s interpretation is that I
really cant see what s wrong with finding out about what the great male fantasies about women are
[ix] The heroine fights against the victimisation, and indeed reverses role with the male in the story, as
it is Marquis who dies and it is the female who leaves this chamber and finds happiness. The Snow
Child, another short story within The Bloody Chamber, is ambiguous. In this small story there are two
victims, both of them women, in this case the bloody chamber could relate to the hole in the snow that
the countess and count ride past, or it could relate to the vagina and virginity of the girl. This
expresses how the role of the women within the gothic genre is ultimately as victims, sometimes
through their naivety and innocence and sometimes through male authority. The count sees both of the
bloody chambers present as objects for his pleasure, therefore

Descriptive Essay About Homeless People
Over 60 million tourists visit New York each year from all across the world. Last summer, my family
and I were lucky enough to be some of those tourists. The trip changed my view on a lot of different
things, ranging all the way from how people act on the Subways, to the diversity of the city itself. It
was such a unique learning experience for me, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to travel
somewhere that was so drastically different from what I am used to.
In 2017, there were 62,351 homeless people living in New York. I had seen homeless people down by
the Subway tracks in different movies, but seeing it in person made me realize how real of a problem
it was. When we got off at our Subway station, there were homeless people sitting on the stairs,
between Subway tracks, on benches, and anywhere else they could find a spot. Some were covered in
newspapers with ratted blankets around them, some looked like they hadn t showered in weeks, and
others looked like they had never owned a toothbrush in their life. Most of them were asking for
change and shaking some coins in a cup at us as we walked by. We hadn t been off the Subway for
more than 10 minutes, and I had already seen at least three homeless people. Little did I know, that
was just the beginning.
As we walked up the stairs and out onto the streets of New York City, I was amazed by how many
homeless people I saw. Outside, some of them had dogs with them that looked almost as beat up as
they did. Most of them had signs in their laps that read things like HOMELESS NEED FOOD AND
MONEY or WILL WORK FOR MONEY. Later on in the day, we went to Shake Shack (a burger and
shake place) for lunch. When we sat down to eat, we saw that there was a homeless man walking
around to different tables asking people if they could give him some money. One guy told the man to
go get a job and do something with his life. The homeless man wasn t very happy with this response
and began marching around their table cursing at them. I realize that there could have been something
mentally wrong with this man, however, it made me realize how poorly some people treat the
homeless. A simple no or no thank you would have been a fine response, especially when you don t

The Delivery Of Communication And Differentiated Instruction
Although using different teaching strategies is necessary in a differentiated music class, simply using
them is not necessarily differentiating instruction. I like to think of strategies as the delivery of
communication and differentiated instruction as the specific individual implementation of strategies.
For example in a music class, one of my strategies of keeping students engaged is to use simple
percussion instruments for developing rhythmic proficiency. The differentiated instruction is provided
by taking individual needs into consideration. For example, a student who is easily aurally overloaded,
I would hand that student a quieter instrument and/or suggest he/she use body percussion or ask them
to sit where they feel comfortable in class relative to the sound being produced. For younger children
who are sound sensitive, I would suggest using earplugs or head sets. It is important to remember that
using a variety of teaching strategies is not the same as differentiating the instruction. In this case
engagement was the overarching strategy and the differentiated instruction was specific to each
student while still keeping them engaged.
Differentiated Instruction is a student focused way of thinking of teaching and learning. It is important
to establish clear and concise guidelines for independent and group work, as well as movement within
a classroom. I will also discuss guidelines in general that I would setup for these areas. In

First Vatican Council Research Paper
Pope Pius IX called the First Vatican Council in 1868. It was the Roman Catholic Church s twentieth
ecumenical council. It was held in the Vatican City. The purpose of this council was to attend to issues
such as secularism, rationalism, and materialism. This council explored the principle of papal
infallibility as well.
The political environment surrounding The First Vatican Council was chaotic, due to the unification of
Italy and Franco Prussian War. Led by the kingdom of Prussia, the Franco Prussian War was a conflict,
between the Second French Empire and Prussia which had supremacy over much of Germany. French
troops abandoned their defence of the Papal States after suffering a heavy loss to the Prussians. Italian
patriots were then able to seize the Papal States and Rome and unify all of Italy. Pope Pius IX then lost
all his global authority, disband the council, and locked himself in the walls of the Vatican. ... Show

Farley Mowats The Role Of Wolves In The Wild
About a century ago, a man by the name of Farley Mowat was sent to the frozen wilderness of Canada
to examine the actions of wolves and how their survival affects the plummeting of the caribou herds.
While studying a pack of seven, he acquired a deep feeling of admiration for this certain pack of
wolves. Almost halfway through the novel, Mowat gives each of the three adults a name that goes
along with their role in the family. While living near a pack of seven wolves, Mowat soon realizes that
they are not at fault for the decline in caribou society, as a matter of fact, they are doing quite the
opposite. There is something far more powerful than wolves harming the population. Human kind
itself is destroying the community of our nature. I kept coming up with the fantastic figure of 112,000
animals killed by trappers in this area every year (Page 86). With all the hunters and trappers in
Keewatin, the population of most animals are immensely falling downward. Over the months, Mowat
observes the wolves during their play time, how they hunt along with feeding the growing pups, and
how they survive. After all, wolves are not what they are said to be. After realizing that wolves are not
the problem, Mowat notices that wolves are actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

wolves. Everyone has always assumed that wolves are dangerous and savage killers. But, Mowat s

Wolf is a novel that identifies the true behavior of wolves and how humans misunderstand their being.
At one point in the story, some trappers kill over twenty three caribou and deer just trying to frame the
wolves for the decrease in the caribou community. After all, wolves have always been thought of as
dangerous predators; this theory has been believed for hundreds of

of the most decorated Warriors in ESU s history, and they played like it in their last regular season
game at Koehler Fieldhouse. The aforementioned three game stretch saw the Warriors out worked on

Ancient People And Agriculture
Ancient people set a building block that we today still build upon. There are many ways ancient
people have done this, such as developing spoken language and inventing farming/agriculture. I think
that farming and agriculture had the biggest impact of all on society, from ancient to modern times,
because it helped people have a permanent home, develop more specialized jobs, and create new
technologies.
Before I start talking about farming and agriculture, I will explain a little about the history of it.
Farming and agriculture began during the Neolithic Era, or the New Stone Age, about 10,000 years
ago, first in Southwest Asia. The reason farming and agriculture was now possible was because the Ice
Ages ended. The Ice Ages were when there were long periods of freezing weather. During this time,
the whole ground would be covered in ice, and the sea levels were very low. The water was so low
that strips of land, called land bridges, let people cross rivers, seas, and maybe even oceans. Then, a

introduction of farming and agriculture gave the community enough food. Because of their new

one of the most important tools, the wheel. Farming and agriculture also gave people more freedom,
because now, since there is a reliable source of food, farms, there was much more free time that they
could spend on hobbies. The food surplus also freed people to specialize in jobs. People who are
talented at something, could choose that job, so they could be as productive to the community as
possible. They could also choose a job that they enjoyed to do. Also, permanent homes led to villages
developing, which then led to towns and

Active Learner
Upon taken the study skills quiz my first score first was active. I was a reflective learner, which prefer
to think about it quietly at first versus being an active learner. I am not an active learner. An active
learner tends to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it. If a student
was an active learner in my classroom I would use the phrase, Let s try it out, move around, and
visually do it to see how it works. It tells the student that I am willing to be active instead of sitting
down all the time. By being active it keeps the student moving and focused on the activity. (Scruggs,

Sensing learners like learning facts which I sometimes enjoy, because information is easier to

have patience while learning. An intuitive learner also can be kind of scatter brained, so when
presenting the intuitive student with a question, I would give them an empty piece of paper to
brainstorm on. (Felder, n.d.) By letting them brain storm it gives them a moment to organize their

learners also like to use the trial and error approach, which I would allow my student to do. If they had

Psychological Factors Of A Serial Killer Essay
Psychological Factors of a Serial Killer
Alyssa Phillips
Caledonia Mumford High School
Abstract
Neurologically, serial killers have common brain structure abnormalities that cause them to lack
emotions as well as to think irrationally. Their family history includes unhappy relationships with their
parents who usually have beaten them or mentally/sexually abused them. This may cause them to be
unable to form healthy relationships and lack empathy and remorse. Serial killers can be distinguished
by their deceitfulness and their need to control people. Depending on if they are organized or
disorganized killer, they have certain personality characteristics. Personality disorders such as
Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as schizophrenia, are common among serial
killers. Since serial killers are exposed to traumatic environments, their brains change their structure in
order to respond to their experiences.
Intro
A serial killer: a person who murders three or more people; taking place over more than a month with
significant breaks in between. How do you tell who these murderers are? How do you distinguish
them from a next door neighbor, a family member, or a friend? By their brain structure, personality
and family history. There is a commonality among serial killers; not just physically but mentally and
neurologically! How they think, how they act, their family history. Several studies into the social

severity of head trauma. In sports, there are concussive incidents: hits to the head causing the brain to
violently shake damaging brain cells to the point where they can no longer be used. In the game of
soccer this can occur when colliding with another player or direct contact to the head. Recovery for
athletes with concussions is generally quick, but in some scenarios symptoms ... Show more content

For instance, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a progressive degenerative disease commonly
found in the brains of athletes with a known past of recurring brain distress. The injury ignites a
buildup of the abnormal tau protein, causing a progressive worsening of the mental state. Previous
recorded cases have shown the location of damage was significant as well as remarkably distinct from
other damaged brains. Nonetheless, not all athletes with head injuries are diagnosed with CTE. The
symptoms of this disorder are very similar to those of dementia and Alzheimer s disease. The most
prevalent indicators include impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and impaired
judgement. These symptoms usually begin many years after a person s involvement in athletics.
Brain trauma is extremely dangerous and in some cases fatal. It is imperative for anyone participating
in sports to learn the signs and symptoms of a concussion as well as the long term effects. Educating
the youth of these consequences will teach them that it is key to abstain from high intensity, contact
sports until completely healed to ensure their best possible health. Thank you for your time and I hope

Explain The Panama Canal Modernization
Introduction:
In this assignment I will first explain the Panama Canal modernization and then I will discuss about
the industry experts/forecasters prediction about its impact on east and west coast of U.S. followed by
the detailed analysis to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction. Furthermore, based on the analysis, I
will present my opinion for rejecting or agreeing with the forecaster s prediction of the panama canal s
positive impact on intermodal traffic market share of east coast ports and west coast ports, western
railroad of U.S.
Overview:
The Panama Canal expansion is one of the biggest developments in maritime trade in last few

ports to gulf or east coast U.S. ports as a result of Panama Canal expansion.
Most businesses in the area numbered as 5, currently rely on West Coast ports to receive goods
namely Los Angeles Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle, and Vancouver. After the Panama Canal
expansion, shipping through the East Coast will be especially attractive to businesses that are more
price sensitive and less time sensitive.
Therefore, for companies in the 5th region, it will become cheaper to handle goods through East Coast
ports, although doing so will add a few weeks to the total transit time but a justification for this
potential switch will highly depend on a company s time preferences, price sensitivity, and costs of
working capital.
Thus, there is a prediction from forecasters that, that West Coast ports and western railroads would see
a significant drop in intermodal traffic market share. Eastern and Southern ports and railroads, on the
other hand, would see a corresponding increase.
Analysis to find out accuracy of the prediction:
So, after 18 months, is the prediction

How I Learned With Depression
Our designated driver is on the floor. With a mouthful of sharp beach sand in his mouth he stays down
and screams Darn! Disoriented and dehydrated I look to the top and I see my partners in crime yelling
at the top of their lungs from the roof of sun beaten lifeguard tower, Throw some beer in his mouth!
With smile football stadiums wide I look down at my bare skin. Covered only by boxers, soaked by
the oceans bitter cold waters, there I was; tears running down my cheeks freezing like a nude fool. I
had found what I was always looking for, and it turned out what I was looking for I had the entire
time. Growing up with depression can be hard. It can be especially hard when you don t know you
have it. I was informed of my depression after a series of test and numerous trips to the doctors. I didn
t enjoy many of things other people did when I was younger due to my depression, but as I got older,
dealing with my depression came to be harder and harder. I showed no interest in anything or anyone.
Things I ones use to love to do no longer called my name. My guitar gathered dust, my skateboards
corroded with the seasons, my hopes to ever feel normal again gone. Constantly getting different
medications was the worst part. I never knew if that day I would be happy, sad, mad, or my all time
favorite, suicidal. Eventually I learned how to deal with my depression, given the right cocktail of pills

Andrew Carnegie Dbq
Andrew Carnegie was an American businessman and Industrialist who led the expansion of the
American steel industry in the late 19th century. He became one of the wealthiest men during the
course of the 19th century due to his involvement in producing steel. By 1900, Carnegie mills were
producing about ⅓ of all steel in the U.S. which was a huge accomplishment in the steel making
business. There is no argument that he is an extraordinary businessman who was self made and was a
hard worker who so many Americans look up to as a model businessman which is why I ask myself,
was Andrew Carnegie a hero? I believe he was a hero because he has paved the road for so many
American businessmen and meets all my requirements for being a hero by having ... Show more

He also created so many jobs for the United States which really helped his community a lot. Evidence
to support my first heroic trait would be in Document G, it shows a map of properties that Carnegie
had in Pittsburg and in the document note it states that Carnegie was a pioneer of Vertical Integration.
This piece of information helps my argument because it tells me that Carnegie is a very good at what
he does if he is a pioneer of Vertical Integration than he is very smart and knows how to get what he
strives and works hard for which is a big accomplishment in the business world. Another piece of
evidence that supports my second heroic trait is when, in Document E, a note at the bottom of the
graph says, By 1900 Carnegie mills were producing about one third of all US steel. This shows me
that if he produces ⅓ of all US steel, then he is giving so many jobs to Americans for producing this
steel which is a great pro for the community.
Some people may say Andrew Carnegie was not a hero due to his favoritism to Scottish and people
from Pittsburgh by giving them gifts but Andrew Carnegie has given $350,000,000 to charities that
benefit his community around him. I believe that someone like Andrew Carnegie who has courage,
who is self made, and has concern for others, meet all the requirements, in my opinion, of being a true
hero. I believe that Andrew Carnegie has a positive legacy to

Competitive advantage is the delivering of superior value to customers and, in doing so, earning an

Abstract For this lab we will use Bradford assay and spectrophotometers in order to determine the
concentration of protein in commercially produced food products. The experiment concluded the three
given milk samples, breakfast milk has the most amount of protein. After calculating and recording
data, we founded that whole milk had the least amount of protein, and breakfast milk ended up having
the most protein. Leaving Muscle Milk with less protein than the breakfast milk and more protein than

First we began setting the spectrophotometer to 595 nm. We than label each cuvette with numbers
corresponding to the concentrations. To each cuvette we added 1 ml of coomassie blue dye and on the
blank cuvette we added 20 ul of PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline). We then added 20 ul of each
standard to the respective cuvettes using a new clean tip for each use. Each cuvette was covered with
parafilm and inverted to mix allowing it to sit for a total of 5 minutes. We first inserted the blank
cuvette into the spectrophotometer and pressed blank once right after we put in each of the cuvettes
with the protein concentrations. In between each cuvette we put in a blank before the next step. After
the absorbance were recorded, we created the standard curve. We then graphed the standard curve,
with solutions and their protein concentrations. We then labeled each cuvette along with a blank. We
repeated the process from finding the standard curve with the known solution. We then used the
equation from the standard curve in order to find the concentrations of proteins and compared. The

Essay on Fahrenheit 451 Sybolism of Fire
The Symbolism of Fire
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, is a novel filled with many symbols. The symbolism used in this
novel varies from different animals to things in nature. One of the biggest symbols throughout the
novel is fire. Fire has multiple meanings in Fahrenheit 451, and is usually symbolized as something to
be feared. Throughout the novel, fire is something that people do not want, even though it can be so
much more than a bad thing. Fire can represent knowledge and awareness, rebirth and construction, as
well as destruction. Fire is depicted, throughout history, as a symbol of knowledge and awareness. Fire

It is said in ancient Greek and Roman mythology that burning the body helps the soul to be purified
and pass on to the afterlife. Though fire can represent knowledge and rebirth, it is mainly depicted as a
destructive force. In the novel fire is used to burn books which are knowledge. By burning this
knowledge the society was kept in a confined situation where the amount of knowledge in everyone is
evenly distributed. It was a pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed.
(Bradbury 3) This quotation shows Montag s feelings towards burning in the beginning of the novel.
Fire destroyed the books. Fire destroyed homes. Fire destroyed the light in everyone. The fire was not
only used to destroy things but it kept the people of society in line. The fire may have been
represented as a disciplinary tool. By having a constant source of the fire, people had fear distilled in
them from the start. This made them subconsciously obedient even though they seemed to be
insubordinate. The overall theme of fire in Fahrenheit 451 is a feeling of destruction. With the right
surroundings and intentions it was used for so much more than that. It was used as a way to exhibit
knowledge. Above all, though the depiction of destruction is very influential, and the representation of
knowledge is somewhat there, the most important symbolism of fire in the novel

Essay On American Persona
The American Persona
To be considered an American, individuals do not have to be white, blond hair, blue eyes, and tall. Nor
do green cards or legal statues make a true American. The persistence of an individual is what truly
makes up the American Persona. As history has been repeated, Americans do whatever possible to

foreigners who had traveled to the Americas.
To be a member of the American society an individual must be an active participant in the system.
One must go out and vote for what they believe is better for themselves and the economy. In the case
of Armed Forces, members must be willing to put their own lives at risk for the better of the
Americans. These beliefs and active roles have shaped America into one of the best global leading
economies. Each American plays a major role in the American system some of them form part of the
labor force and some others form the elite. However, in some instances individuals are not effective

Coal Mining Essay
Coal Mining Coal, a mineral I have discussed previously, is necessary to our everyday lives. Coal is
an incredible source of energy; it heats our houses and buildings, and also fuels stoves. You may often
wonder where this extremely useful mineral comes from. Coal does not just appear; it needs to be
mined through a process which results in our being able to utilize it. Coal mining is fairly inexpensive,
is carried out on a large scale and can be mined in either underground or surface mines. Surface
mining is the coal mining process that accounts for around 60% of the United States coal. It tends to
be very efficient, with a single worker recovering up to 30 to 40 tons of coal in a day. To begin surface

After the coal has been removed form the earth, it is still not ready for use; it must first be refined.
Coal must first be separated form foreign materials, for example other minerals, to be considered
useful to us. One way of doing this is called coal washing. The coal is first crushed into smaller
pieces, and then a liquid is used to separate the coal based on density. Coal that is higher in density
harbors more ash, so is left behind, whereas low density coal has contains little ash and is more
desirable. Another process to separate coal from foreign materials is call dry shaling, which works
without the use of liquid. After being separated, coal can be processed into coke, and eventually steel.
When coal is transported, it can be by means of truck, train, or ship, and can go nearly anywhere.
Truck and train transportation are the cheapest forms, particularly train if you are shipping a great
amount, and ships are used for overseas transport. Underground mining accounted for 96% of the coal
produced each year when it was done manually, and this was fifty years ago. Most underground mines
are located to the east of the Mississippi River; however there are some in Utah and Colorado. More
than two thirds of the coal mined underground is done so using continuous mining machines in the
room pillar method. The continuous miner breaks the coal with tungsten bits on a revolving cylinder,
and then conveys it to waiting shuttles which then take the coal to the

Huckleberry Finn Should Be Banned Essay
A country that denies its own history is destined to fall. Toshio Tamogami This excerpt extracted from
an essay written by Toshio Tamogami, a former head of Japanese air force, expresses the importance
of embracing the corrupt phenomenons of the past. While these occurrences tend to be unsettling to
most, does not mean that they shall be neglected and ignored. Even in this day and age, Japanese
textbooks continue to utilize euphemism in portraying their own country s obscenity in war. Allowing
for these textbooks to be censored leaves the possibility for these past occurrences to reoccur because
the younger population will never learn the true horror of these atrocities. The censorship of these
textbooks in Japan closely relates to the banning of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark
Twain in specific schools across the United States of America. The quote from Toshio Tamogami
perfectly encapsulates why it is important for works like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which
although unsettling to some, should be celebrated and remembered. There are arguments made by

Exile And Pain In Three Elegiac Poems Essay
There is a great similarity between the three elegiac poems, The Wanderer, The Wife of Lament, and

majority of the world s literature from the past contains the theme of exile. The Wife of Lament is
another perfect example of literature with exile, and was written by an unknown author.

through and how terrible it must be for him to live without all the things many others take for granted
everyday of their lives. The author of this poem, who has obviously been exiled, does an exquisite job
of showing, maybe even teaching, to the reader how important the things are that you lose in life when
exiled, no matter how rich or poor you are. You take the greatest loss of all when you are exiled, you
take the loss of losing everything that makes it seem purposeful for you to live out the day you just
began. This is obviously the idea the author is trying to get across in this poem. Throughout the poem
The Seafarer, also composed by an unknown author, it is obvious that the man is not exiled directly in
the ways people have been exiled in the other poems, however being stuck on a ship is in many ways
quite similar to being exiled from your homeland. Numerous passages in this poem show this mans
painful life at sea. The one that stands out most greatly to me is this passage;

Baroque, The Era Of Baroque Art And The Baroque Period
Baroque is a style in art. It is an era of artistic style that used sensational motion and obvious, easily
interpreted features to produce drama, tension, and magnificence in architecture, sculptures, paintings,
literature, theatre, dance and music. Baroque art is usually very frisky and has several ornaments.
It was between the styles of Renaissance and Neoclassicism. This means it began at the begging of the
16th century (around 1600), at that time, there were absolutist monarchs in Europe. The movement
started in Italy. It then spread to the Catholic countries in Europe. Eventually it also spread to the
Protestant ones.
The success and popularity of the Baroque style was backed up by the Catholic Church. The Catholic
Church expressed that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Late Baroque, c. 1660 1725 or later
The development of Baroque
The Baroque arose around 1600, a few decades after the Council of Trent, by which the Roman
Catholic Church was agreed that the representational arts, by that paintings and sculptures in church
contexts was healthy because it speaks to the illiterate rather than to the well informed. Many art
experts see this turn toward a popular concept of the function of churchly art as motivating the
innovations of the brothers Annibale and Agostino Carracci and of Caravaggio, all of whom were
working in Rome and rival for commissions.
The word Baroque comes from the Portuguese word barocco which means something like unusual . In
Portuguese, it was first used for irregularly shaped pearls, but then it was first used in France to mean
works of art that did not follow the current trend.
Sculptures
Some representatives assumed new importance in Baroque sculptures and there was actually a positive
movement and energy of human forms. For the first time, Baroque sculpture usually had many ideal
viewing angles so, that from wherever you stand you would see amazing scenery. The features
Baroque sculpture added additional sculptural components, for example, water fountains or concealed

Age Of Reason Dbq
Between the 17th and 18th century, Enlightenment ideas that originated from France spread to other
parts of Europe. Prior to the Enlightenment, absolute monarchs ruled most of Europe. Over time,
citizens began to question the monarch s power with ideas from philosophes such as Voltaire and John
Locke. The philosophers concluded that society s problems could be solved using a method of logic
and reason. Also known as the Age of Reason, the Enlightenment inspired societal change and
evolution. Through the use of logic and reason, enlightened despots of the 18th century were
influenced by the social, political, and economic aspects of the Enlightenment.
The Enlightenment impacted the social development of Europe by introducing the importance ...

Catherine II believed that serfs and peasants must submit to the orders of their landlords, and those
who interfere with this servitude would be punished for public disturbance. (Doc. 6) As an enlightened
despot, Catherine II opposed the unjust treatment towards the peasants, but failed to abolish serfdom
due to the fears of losing support from wealthy nobles and landlords, even though serfs made up the
majority of the economy. Her unfair distribution of power combined with the ideas of Enlightenment
philosophes would result in peasant revolts against the monarchy and increase the desires for
economic change. Also, Voltaire, a French philosopher who was exiled from France and lived in
England during its monarchy, experienced the unfair taxation aimed at the working class. He believed
that no one should be exempt from taxation due to their social titles and that tax orders should not be
altered to benefit the wealthy upper class. (Doc. 7) Fair and equal taxes would reduce the economic
dependency on the income taxes of the working class, which is approximately half of their salary;
Voltaire s ideas quickly gained the support of the working class as it provided them hope for a better
life. Adam Smith, another supporter of economic change, believed that the government should not
interfere with the economy even when

Internet Addiction Disorder The technology is growing strong every day. More and more people start
to use smartphone, computer, etc. In addition, the main purpose of using smartphone, computer or any
technology devices is to gain access to the Internet. Consequently, people started to be addictive to the
Internet. Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) is the term to describe the massive using of Internet. IAD
is similar with other addiction disorders such as gambling, sex, gaming, or shopping. People who
develop problems with their Internet use may start off using the Internet on a casual basis and then
progress to using the technology in dysfunctional ways. Many people believe that spending large
amounts of time on the Internet is a core feature of the disorder (Minddisorder.com). In fact, the way
that Internet is being used in daily routines is the most important factor. Internet Addition Disorder or
IAD was first noticed by Kimberly Young, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at the University
of Pittsburgh, Bradford. According to the article Trap in the Web , in 1994, Young did a survey on 500
Internet users about their on line habits. Young separated participants into two groups: dependent and
non dependent. She gave seven questions about using the Internet. If a participant answered yes to
three or more questions, he or she will be classified as a dependent. According to the survey,

The Regime Of The Cuban Revolution
Cuba is a nation that has been conquered by many people over the years and because of
decolonization it is hard for the Cuban people to get rid of the rulers who wanted to influence their
history. Fidel Castro gave the Cuban people independence. He was a forceful and cunning dictator
who controlled the country and negatively effected the economy. The United States did not support the
arrogant dictator s establishment of communism which led to an economic downfall. Due to Castro s
insistence on practicing communism, the Cuban economy suffered as the government nationalized
businesses while the United States implemented a trade embargo. In 1940 a dictator named Fulgencio
Batista came to power in Cuba and was the President there until 1944. He then returned in 1952 and
ruled until 1959 (Levinson). Batista was a dictator and an ally of the United States. The United States
supported Batista and his dictatorship because they felt like they could control and overpower him, not
making him any sort of threat. Between 1940 1944 Batista sponsored a large program of public works,
expanded the educational system, and fostered the growth of the economy. When Batista returned to
power in 1952 he was a brutal dictator and increasingly participated in corrupt actions (Levinson).
Batista took control of the university, press and congress so he could maintain a strong hold on the
people and the country. Batista also took lots of money that was meant for the government and held

The years spent in Africa influenced Lessing deeply as a writer. Ruth Whittaker, one of the readers of Lessing s works, in his work Doris Lessing commented this novel as, an extraordinary first novel in its assured treatment of its unusual subject matter... Doris Lessing questions the entire values of Rhodesian white colonial society (88). The Grass Is Singing narrates the life events of Mary Turner shaped by colonial experience, in the Rhodesian veld and South Africa, and questions the entire values of the Rhodesian white colonial society. Lessing spins an intricate text, interweaving Mary s life and struggle in a colonial world. In vibrant details, Lessing describes the effects of a society under colonization a culture polluted by the rigid infrastructure of patriarchy giving rise to gender and race discriminations. The elementary school teaches children who attend this school are kindergarten to fifth grade. The classroom I am observed are students between nine and ten years old and are currently in the fourth grade. When I arrived on campus there were many things that have changed and the relationship between teachers and students is a lot closer now than from what I can remember from the late 1990s and early 2000 years. The school now displays murals and colorful art projects designed by students and displayed throughout the hallways. When I arrived on campus, I was greeted by a group of volunteer parents and one security guard. They were very friendly and directed me to the main office so I could check in. I then met with the principal who was already aware of my observation and was delighted to walk me to the classroom of my observation. The current principle Rita Exposito began in 2010 and has been with the school ever since. The protagonist s husband clearly considers her an object of exchange and plans to inscribe upon her his continuing tale of punishment for wives disobedience [viii] again showing how women make themselves victims of their own behaviour, Helen Simpson s interpretation is that I really cant see what s wrong with finding out about what the great male fantasies about women are [ix] The heroine fights against the victimisation, and indeed reverses role with the male in the story, as it is Marquis who dies and it is the female who leaves this chamber and finds happiness. The Snow Child, another short story within The Bloody Chamber, is ambiguous. In this small story there are two victims, both of them women, in this case the bloody chamber could relate to the hole in the snow that the countess and count ride past, or it could relate to the vagina and virginity of the girl. • 11. Descriptive Essay About Homeless People Over 60 million tourists visit New York each year from all across the world. Last summer, my family and I were lucky enough to be some of those tourists. The trip changed my view on a lot of different things, ranging all the way from how people act on the Subways, to the diversity of the city itself. It was such a unique learning experience for me, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to travel somewhere that was so drastically different from what I am used to. In 2017, there were 62,351 homeless people living in New York. I had seen homeless people down by the Subway tracks in different movies, but seeing it in person made me realize how real of a problem it was. When we got off at our Subway station, there were homeless people sitting on the stairs, between Subway tracks, on benches, and anywhere else they could find a spot. Some were covered in newspapers with ratted blankets around them, some looked like they hadn t showered in weeks, and others looked like they had never owned a toothbrush in their life. Most of them were asking for change and shaking some coins in a cup at us as we walked by. We hadn t been off the Subway for more than 10 minutes, and I had already seen at least three homeless people. Little did I know, that was just the beginning. As we walked up the stairs and out onto the streets of New York City, I was amazed by how many homeless people I saw. Outside, some of them had dogs with them that looked almost as beat up as they did. Most of them had signs in their laps that read things like HOMELESS NEED FOOD AND MONEY or WILL WORK FOR MONEY. Later on in the day, we went to Shake Shack (a burger and shake place) for lunch. When we sat down to eat, we saw that there was a homeless man walking around to different tables asking people if they could give him some money. One guy told the man to go get a job and do something with his life. The homeless man wasn t very happy with this response and began marching around their table cursing at them. I realize that there could have been something mentally wrong with this man, however, it made me realize how poorly some people treat the homeless. • 12. The Delivery Of Communication And Differentiated Instruction Although using different teaching strategies is necessary in a differentiated music class, simply using them is not necessarily differentiating instruction. I like to think of strategies as the delivery of communication and differentiated instruction as the specific individual implementation of strategies. For example in a music class, one of my strategies of keeping students engaged is to use simple percussion instruments for developing rhythmic proficiency. The differentiated instruction is provided by taking individual needs into consideration. For example, a student who is easily aurally overloaded, I would hand that student a quieter instrument and/or suggest he/she use body percussion or ask them to sit where they feel comfortable in class relative to the sound being produced. For younger children who are sound sensitive, I would suggest using earplugs or head sets. It is important to remember that using a variety of teaching strategies is not the same as differentiating the instruction. In this case engagement was the overarching strategy and the differentiated instruction was specific to each student while still keeping them engaged. Differentiated Instruction is a student focused way of thinking of teaching and learning. It is important to establish clear and concise guidelines for independent and group work, as well as movement within a classroom. I will also discuss guidelines in general that I would setup for these areas. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before I start talking about farming and agriculture, I will explain a little about the history of it. Farming and agriculture began during the Neolithic Era, or the New Stone Age, about 10,000 years ago, first in Southwest Asia. The reason farming and agriculture was now possible was because the Ice Ages ended. The Ice Ages were when there were long periods of freezing weather. Most businesses in the area numbered as 5, currently rely on West Coast ports to receive goods namely Los Angeles Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle, and Vancouver. After the Panama Canal expansion, shipping through the East Coast will be especially attractive to businesses that are more price sensitive and less time sensitive. Therefore, for companies in the 5th region, it will become cheaper to handle goods through East Coast ports, although doing so will add a few weeks to the total transit time but a justification for this potential switch will highly depend on a company s time preferences, price sensitivity, and costs of working capital. Thus, there is a prediction from forecasters that, that West Coast ports and western railroads would see a significant drop in intermodal traffic market share. Eastern and Southern ports and railroads, on the other hand, would see a corresponding increase. Analysis to find out accuracy of the prediction: So, after 18 months, is the prediction ... I had found what I was always looking for, and it turned out what I was looking for I had the entire time. Growing up with depression can be hard. It can be especially hard when you don t know you have it. I was informed of my depression after a series of test and numerous trips to the doctors. I didn t enjoy many of things other people did when I was younger due to my depression, but as I got older, dealing with my depression came to be harder and harder. I showed no interest in anything or anyone. Things I ones use to love to do no longer called my name. My guitar gathered dust, my skateboards corroded with the seasons, my hopes to ever feel normal again gone. Constantly getting different medications was the worst part. He became one of the wealthiest men during the course of the 19th century due to his involvement in producing steel. By 1900, Carnegie mills were producing about ⅓ of all steel in the U.S. which was a huge accomplishment in the steel making business. There is no argument that he is an extraordinary businessman who was self made and was a hard worker who so many Americans look up to as a model businessman which is why I ask myself, was Andrew Carnegie a hero? This piece of information helps my argument because it tells me that Carnegie is a very good at what he does if he is a pioneer of Vertical Integration than he is very smart and knows how to get what he strives and works hard for which is a big accomplishment in the business world. Another piece of evidence that supports my second heroic trait is when, in Document E, a note at the bottom of the graph says, By 1900 Carnegie mills were producing about one third of all US steel. This shows me that if he produces ⅓ of all US steel, then he is giving so many jobs to Americans for producing this steel which is a great pro for the community. It is said in ancient Greek and Roman mythology that burning the body helps the soul to be purified and pass on to the afterlife. Though fire can represent knowledge and rebirth, it is mainly depicted as a destructive force. In the novel fire is used to burn books which are knowledge. By burning this knowledge the society was kept in a confined situation where the amount of knowledge in everyone is evenly distributed. It was a pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. (Bradbury 3) This quotation shows Montag s feelings towards burning in the beginning of the novel. Fire destroyed the books. Fire destroyed homes. Fire destroyed the light in everyone. The fire was not only used to destroy things but it kept the people of society in line. The fire may have been represented as a disciplinary tool. By having a constant source of the fire, people had fear distilled in them from the start. This made them subconsciously obedient even though they seemed to be insubordinate. The overall theme of fire in Fahrenheit 451 is a feeling of destruction. With the right surroundings and intentions it was used for so much more than that. It was used as a way to exhibit knowledge. Coal that is higher in density harbors more ash, so is left behind, whereas low density coal has contains little ash and is more desirable. For the most part, the poem is sad and depressing and the reader easily sees what this man is going through and how terrible it must be for him to live without all the things many others take for granted everyday of their lives.
