The European Union is the second largest market for fishery products in the world. It imports nearly 70% of the fish it consumes. This presents an opportunity to export shrimp, fish fillets, canned foods, and processed seafood products to the EU. In 2011, China was the main supplier to the EU, exporting $5.8 billion, while Colombia exported $17 million, accounting for 13% of its total fisheries exports. Exports to the EU must meet sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, including originating from an approved establishment and complying with food safety and labeling regulations. Required documents for export include health certificates, certificates of origin, and invoices.
