Earth Hour is an annual event where individuals, communities, and businesses show their commitment to the environment by turning off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour. The event began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia and has grown globally to involve over 800 cities across 78 countries. In 2009, Earth Hour aims to have 1 billion participants express support for urgent action on climate change ahead of a key international climate conference. Malaysians are encouraged to participate on March 28th by turning off lights from 8:30-9:30pm in cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang and at landmarks including KL Tower. Individuals are urged to reduce their environmental footprint through small actions both during Earth Hour and in daily life.
