How the nature of work is changing and what your country/sector governments
can do to prepare and support their workforces?
Technological advancement has revolutionized the nature of work and it is changing at a
rapid pace. Karl Max identified that machine will create competition in the world and can
take the jobs that people do themselves. Innovation transforms the living standard of
people yet it poses a threat to their employment and decision-making capabilities. Today,
almost every organization uses technology to maximize its profit and improve its efficiency
by incorporating different business intelligence models and other technological
applications. In one way, it provides numerous benefits to the organizations but on the
other hand, it becomes a challenge for people to sustain their jobs. Process automation
such as automated processes in supply chain management or customer-relationship
management has led to the loss of many jobs around the world because people are no
longer required to perform their tasks as technology is taking over and is performing the
same tasks in less time. There are two primary reasons for the loss of jobs in the
organizations, one is to save their time and the other is to save and utilize the
organizational resources in an efficient manner. Due to these two reasons, the
organizations are now adopting technology and hence the jobs of people are being lost.
Mostly, the people working in the manufacturing industries are more at risk and are losing
their jobs because automation is taking over and machines are performing the tasks.
There are positive and negative aspects of the use of technology in the work; if people
are losing their jobs, technology is creating and opening new sectors of work as well. In
my opinion, the people with less tech skills and knowledge are more at risk because
competition has increased and people are striving to get great skill set and make
themselves capable enough to understand the use of technology in their work. The above
stated argument was for the private sectors. Now if I talk about the public sector, the
public service delivery can be improved using the e-governance models and incorporating
other technology options within the governance system. The traditional way of
governance is time taking and wastes a lot of resources so, it is important to prioritize the
issue of resource scarcity and improve the governance system in order to provide better
services to the public. Now that I have talked about the importance of technology in both
public and private sector, I’ll be focusing on the solution to address the changing nature
of work and what the government in my country can do about it. I live in Pakistan, where
literacy rate is low and most of the population is not well-educated. There are people living
in big cities who are well-educated and have great sets of knowledge, skills and abilities
and know the use of technology in their work. But, most of the people do not possess the
skill set to cope up with the changing nature of work and utilize their knowledge in the
growing and competitive environments. Lack of tech skills poses a great challenges in the
work environment and also affects the growth of the organization in which that person is
working. People are striving to stay competitive in their jobs and are also concerned about
their job security. Pakistan is a developing country but still there is great competition in
the bigger firms of my country where people are working hard to cope up with the
changing nature of work. A simple solution to keep a pace with the changing nature of
work is to invest in the human capital. Parents must start investing in their children at the
early stages of development to improve their analytical and cognitive skills. Better health
and education facilities play a key role in this regard. There are three kinds of skills that
should be taught to the children from the early age:
i. Problem-solving skills
ii. Socio-behavioral skills
iii. Adaptability skills
Government of Pakistan needs to improve its literacy rate and invest in human capital to
cope up with the changing nature of work. It is very important to learn skill set for using
and integrating technology into our work and businesses to improve the efficiency. If we
start investing in ourselves today, our future will be bright and secure tomorrow. Early
childhood development is extremely important with proper health and nutrition care to
stay healthy and focused on studies. Government of Pakistan also needs to devise
policies with forceful implementation to build strong human capital foundations in order to
get high gains in the future. Also, informal sectors must also understand the benefits of
incorporating technology so that they can also contribute towards the growing economy
of Pakistan.

  • 2. How the nature of work is changing and what your country/sector governments can do to prepare and support their workforces? Technological advancement has revolutionized the nature of work and it is changing at a rapid pace. Karl Max identified that machine will create competition in the world and can take the jobs that people do themselves. Innovation transforms the living standard of people yet it poses a threat to their employment and decision-making capabilities. Today, almost every organization uses technology to maximize its profit and improve its efficiency by incorporating different business intelligence models and other technological applications. In one way, it provides numerous benefits to the organizations but on the other hand, it becomes a challenge for people to sustain their jobs. Process automation such as automated processes in supply chain management or customer-relationship management has led to the loss of many jobs around the world because people are no longer required to perform their tasks as technology is taking over and is performing the same tasks in less time. There are two primary reasons for the loss of jobs in the organizations, one is to save their time and the other is to save and utilize the organizational resources in an efficient manner. Due to these two reasons, the organizations are now adopting technology and hence the jobs of people are being lost. Mostly, the people working in the manufacturing industries are more at risk and are losing their jobs because automation is taking over and machines are performing the tasks. There are positive and negative aspects of the use of technology in the work; if people are losing their jobs, technology is creating and opening new sectors of work as well. In my opinion, the people with less tech skills and knowledge are more at risk because competition has increased and people are striving to get great skill set and make themselves capable enough to understand the use of technology in their work. The above stated argument was for the private sectors. Now if I talk about the public sector, the public service delivery can be improved using the e-governance models and incorporating other technology options within the governance system. The traditional way of governance is time taking and wastes a lot of resources so, it is important to prioritize the issue of resource scarcity and improve the governance system in order to provide better services to the public. Now that I have talked about the importance of technology in both public and private sector, I’ll be focusing on the solution to address the changing nature
  • 3. of work and what the government in my country can do about it. I live in Pakistan, where literacy rate is low and most of the population is not well-educated. There are people living in big cities who are well-educated and have great sets of knowledge, skills and abilities and know the use of technology in their work. But, most of the people do not possess the skill set to cope up with the changing nature of work and utilize their knowledge in the growing and competitive environments. Lack of tech skills poses a great challenges in the work environment and also affects the growth of the organization in which that person is working. People are striving to stay competitive in their jobs and are also concerned about their job security. Pakistan is a developing country but still there is great competition in the bigger firms of my country where people are working hard to cope up with the changing nature of work. A simple solution to keep a pace with the changing nature of work is to invest in the human capital. Parents must start investing in their children at the early stages of development to improve their analytical and cognitive skills. Better health and education facilities play a key role in this regard. There are three kinds of skills that should be taught to the children from the early age: i. Problem-solving skills ii. Socio-behavioral skills iii. Adaptability skills Government of Pakistan needs to improve its literacy rate and invest in human capital to cope up with the changing nature of work. It is very important to learn skill set for using and integrating technology into our work and businesses to improve the efficiency. If we start investing in ourselves today, our future will be bright and secure tomorrow. Early childhood development is extremely important with proper health and nutrition care to stay healthy and focused on studies. Government of Pakistan also needs to devise policies with forceful implementation to build strong human capital foundations in order to get high gains in the future. Also, informal sectors must also understand the benefits of incorporating technology so that they can also contribute towards the growing economy of Pakistan.
