TO PREPARE AND SUPPORT ITS
WORKFORCE.
2. Technology and globalization are bringing changes to the nature of work
through automation. Automation is changing the way things are done in the
world and to be able to keep up, human beings need some basic skills such as
advanced cognitive skills, socio-behavioral skills and skill combinations that
are predictive of adaptability such as logical reasoning and self-efficacy.
WHAT MY GOVERNMENT CAN DO TO KEEP UP WITH THE
FUTURE OF WORK.
Innovation will bring jobs in the future which are not in existence today. Most
of the skills required for the changing nature of work are lacking in my
Country which is a developing country (Nigeria).
The top action my government can take to prepare and support its workforce
for this change in the nature of work is to create more formal jobs. Majority of
the workforce are in informal jobs and there is low productivity in those jobs,
often with no access to technology. By creating more formal jobs, the Country
will enjoy the benefits of these technological changes happening in the world.
3. Secondly, the government should invest in human
capital and this it can do by investing in quality
learning, early child education, adult education,
lifelong learning and reskilling initiatives. Better adult
learning opportunities enable those who have left
school to reskill according to changing labor market
demands. Automation is bringing about skills that are
uncommon in the present. Skills like complex
problem solving, critical reasoning, teamwork and
commitment. The only way these skills will be
developed is by investing in human capital.
Technology will soon reach majority of the citizens
and so the most effective way is to invest in people’s
knowledge, skills and capabilities so that by the time
it reaches them, they are fully prepared. Besides,
investment in human capital increases employee
satisfaction and engagements. Better employee
satisfaction and engagement lead to an improved
overall performance and productivity which in turn
will increase our GDP
4. Thirdly, there's the need for the
government to invest in infrastructure.
Infrastructures such as access to the
internet throughout the country, good
roads, improved electricity, improved
health care centers, etc.
Also, the government should create
enabling environments for businesses
to strive and it should also invest in
entrepreneurship training for adults and
productive opportunities for teenagers
and young adults.
5. Furthermore, the Nigerian government will
need to strengthen and enhance its social
protection. This will include basic social
assistance which should have a guaranteed
minimum, expanded social insurance ,
improved labor market regulations and social
inclusion of every citizen of Nigeria
irrespective of his/her job or class.
Also, there should be improvements in
sectors such as care, education, water and
energy.
6. Lastly, the government should
increase revenue mobilization. The
ways it can raise this additional
revenue is to
impose VAT correctly.
Revisit it energy subsidies.
Strengthen its custom taxes.
make sure there isn't tax evasion
by its citizens especially those in
the wealthy class etc.
7. In summary, to enable the Nigerian government prepare and
support its workforce for the changes in work, it needs to:
1. Create more formal jobs.
2. Invest in human capital through quality education, lifelong
learning , reskilling initiatives etc.
3. Invest in infrastructure.
4. Nurture an enabling environment for business.
5. Invest in entrepreneurship and training for adults.
6. Increase access to technology to all citizens.
7. Increase productive opportunities for teenagers and young
adults.
8. Strengthen its social protection
9. Increase its revenue mobilization.
