Making Your Data More Valuable to the People Who Could Use It Most
How can you turn your data into a valuable information service? Darrell Gunter will address this important issue in the context of its customer, Asklepios Group, which operates hospitals and highly specialized rehabilitation clinics in Europe and the United States. Asklepios struggled to share its knowledge across a variety of locations. On-duty doctor must be able to search and access information across a breadth of specialties quickly and efficiently. Its network of health care specialists doesn't equate to a community. The answer is to develop a system that provides doctors with virtual-knowledge services when treating patients, thus improving the level of care to patients. Darrell then discusses how you can make your data valuable to the people who need it most.

This concept can be applied to the wisdom of clinicians inside healthcare institutions. By gathering and sharing course content and tools between care facilities, hospitals can be connected to more than just the technical cloud. They can be connected to the wisdom of the cloud.

Lab 3: XAMPP and MySQL Setup
Due Week 5 and worth 75 points
· Install XAMPP and MySQL and take a screen shot that shows the MySQL prompt on your screen. (screen shot optional)
· Research the capabilities of MySQL.
Write a one to two (1-2) page paper in which you:
1. Describe your experiences related to your setup of MySQL. Include any difficulties or issues that you had encountered during the installation.
1. Based on your post-installation research, describe the main capabilities of MySQL.
1. Describe the approach that you would take to go from a conceptual or logical model that you created to the implementation of that database structure in MySQL. Determine the additional information that you will need to implement the database design in a database management system.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
. Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
Research studies show thatevidence-based practice(EBP) leads to higher qual-
ity care, improved patient out-
comes, reduced costs, and greater
nurse satisfaction than traditional
approaches to care.1-5 Despite
these favorable findings, many
nurses remain inconsistent in their
implementation of evidence-based
care. Moreover, some nurses,
whose education predates the in-
clusion of EBP in the nursing cur-
riculum, still lack the computer
and Internet search skills neces-
sary to implement these practices.
As a result, misconceptions about
EBP—that it’s too difficult or too
time-consuming—continue to
flourish.
In the first article in this series
(“Igniting a Spirit of Inquiry: An
Essential Foundation for Evidence-
Based Practice,” November 2009),
we described EBP as a problem-
solving approach to the delivery
of health care that integrates the
best evidence from well-designed
studies and patient care data,
and combines it with patient
preferences and values and nurse
expertise. We also addressed the
contribution of EBP to improved
care and patient outcomes, de-
scribed barriers to EBP as well as
factors facilitating its implementa-
tion, and discussed strategies for
igniting a spirit of inquiry in clin-
ical practice, which is the founda-
tion of EBP, referred to as Step
Zero. (Editor’s note: although
EBP has seven steps, they are
numbered zero to six.) In this
article, we offer a brief overview
of the multistep EBP process.
Future articles will elaborate on
each of the EBP steps, using
the context provided by the
Cas.

Instructions
Final Project
The Final Project should demonstrate an understanding of the reading assignments, class discussions, your own research and the application of new knowledge. It should utilize previous skills developed in foundational health care courses and apply them within the context and viewpoint of a health care administrator and their role in managing health and human services.
For the Final Project, select one of the following topics and conduct scholarly and professional research while integrating the course’s learning outcomes to address a selected topic:
Research specific leadership and management traits and theories necessary for managing a multidisciplinary and multicultural health care organization to promote organizational effectiveness.
Present how strategic planning, performance improvement, and information systems are interrelated and fundamental to the delivery of quality health care.
Examine the financial characteristics of health care delivery along with managing costs, revenues, and human resources.
Analyze ethical and legal concepts, including specific federal regulations, required of health care organizations to ensure the delivery of high quality health care that protects patient safety.
Research Requirements
Academic research and papers must meet certain standards of quality that are recognized by the academic community. What constitutes quality academic research?
The use of primary (original), credible sources written by experts in the field of study.
Ensuring secondary sources are supported by research in primary sources.
Making sure all research is relevant and that material used is pertinent to the area of study.
In graduate work, the use of peer-reviewed journal articles (journal articles reviewed by recognized experts in the relevant field of study) is required.
Keep in mind that educational websites may be appropriate, in some cases, but should be evaluated carefully.
The Ashford University Library offers many excellent databases and other resources to assist you in conducting scholarly research.
What sources are not acceptable for academic research and referencing?
Encyclopedias
Dictionaries
Wikipedia, other wikis, or blogs
Websites and other sources that do not provide quality researched materials (e.g., they do not use credible sources to support the information in the document).
All research must reflect professional academic protocol and must be documented according to APA standards as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
Creating the Final Project
You may choose to present your research is the form of an eight- to ten-page research paper (excluding title and reference pages) or a comprehensive 10- to 15-slide PowerPoint presentation (excluding title and reference slides) with detailed speaker notes. In either case, the content of the assignment must include each of the elements listed below:
Introduction
Describe the issue. Include why it was selected, the perspective of your approac.

Editor's Notes
STM Facts Over the last 12 years, the STM industry has loaded up 90% of the 23,000 journal titles. These titles generate in access of 800,000 articles per year for an estimated author community of 5.5 million worldwide researchers. It is estimated that it takes an author 90 – 100 hours to prepare a scientific article and it will take 2 – 3 reviewers 3 – 6 hours to conduct their peer review of a single article. Considering the time it takes the author to write their scientific article, consider the daunting task of the researcher to stay up on the ever growing number of scientific articles., their time is seriously being challenged. Mark Ware’s 2006 paper on the STM industry reported that size of single journal grew from 83 to 154 articles. The length of the average article grew from 7.4 to 12.4 pages and the total pages of the journal grew to 2,216 from 820 pages. A whopping 270%. Considering these statistics are a few years old and the trend is increasing each year, we know that the researcher’s burden becomes more substantial each year. Just as challenging is the academic library’s challenge to manage their collection within their budget. Unfortunately the average publisher journal price increase is always higher than the average library’s budget for serials and monographs. While the publishing community have brought great value to the research community by providing backfiles at a very reasonable cost and providing them access to their entire library of titles. The fact remains that the library’s budget and the publisher’s subscription price increases have been and will remain in conflict with each other.
