Finding the best evidence
What are Systematic Reviews?
High-level overviews of primary research
that tries to identify, select, synthesize and
appraise all high-quality research evidence
relevant to that question.
Ref: EBM Resource Pyramid https://hsls.libguides.com/pyramid
The 5 steps of evidence-based practice
▪ Step 1. Ask the question: expressing the problem as a clinical question
▪ Step 2. Acquire the best available evidence and as comprehensive as possible:
finding evidence-based resources that answer the question
▪ Step 3. Appraise the evidence: critically appraising the evidence to assess its
validity
▪ Step 4. Apply the evidence
▪ Step 5. Re-evaluate the evidence and its application

Using the PICO search framework to structure a question
P = Patient/population/problem
I = Intervention
C = Comparison/control
O = Outcome
PICO is a method to structure the elements (concepts) of a clinical question into a search strategy.

There is no perfect way to search!
An effective search is an iterative
process:
• it involves narrowing or widening your
search strategy
• after finding relevant information, the
search statement is revised based on
what you did (or did not) find
• the search is refined accordingly
It is a process of constant modification of
the basic search, often requiring extensive
practice with the database(s) and expertise
in the topic searched.
Thank you

  • 13. Finding the best evidence What are Systematic Reviews? High-level overviews of primary research that tries to identify, select, synthesize and appraise all high-quality research evidence relevant to that question. Ref: EBM Resource Pyramid https://hsls.libguides.com/pyramid
  • 14. The 5 steps of evidence-based practice ▪ Step 1. Ask the question: expressing the problem as a clinical question ▪ Step 2. Acquire the best available evidence and as comprehensive as possible: finding evidence-based resources that answer the question ▪ Step 3. Appraise the evidence: critically appraising the evidence to assess its validity ▪ Step 4. Apply the evidence ▪ Step 5. Re-evaluate the evidence and its application Ref.: https://www.elsevier.com/books/evidence-based-medicine/straus/978-0-7020-6296-4

  • 59. There is no perfect way to search! An effective search is an iterative process: • it involves narrowing or widening your search strategy • after finding relevant information, the search statement is revised based on what you did (or did not) find • the search is refined accordingly It is a process of constant modification of the basic search, often requiring extensive practice with the database(s) and expertise in the topic searched.
