As Giambattista Vico uttered centuries ago, "the truth, itself, is made." And, as humans, most of our truth is made with language. What does this mean for Information Architecture, and those who practice it? In this presentation, we will explore that question. First, we'll establish what sort of material language is, and then we'll look at how IA uses it to shape the human environment.

The speech will be about how work and collaboration platforms are evolving in the face of unprecedented change. As personal social networks become more ubiquitous, collaboration in the workplace is coming into its own. The ability to share information, find resources, work on projects, using social platforms makes life easier, faster and more productive and creates a more engaged workforce. See how your business can be more productive, respond to customers faster, and beat off competitive threats by allowing people to work together better.

An Undesigned World
Jason Ulaszek
More and more, designers are being asked to help businesses make important decisions. Our ability to connect the disconnected and see the unseen is increasingly valuable in generating new opportunities and boosting commercial value. In part, the growth of the design industry’s value is being driven by businesses realizing that every great experience is designed - we’re helping render the intent of the next great phone, killer mobile app or customer service interaction into reality. At times, it feels we’re spending an exorbitant amount of energy and resources to design for the next greatest “thing”. While we admirably practice our craft on these design challenges for business, we must also recognize the rest of the undesigned world before us. Why are we allowing so many social systems’ experiences to exist ineffectively or even excruciatingly painful? As designers, we owe ourselves the opportunity to fall in love with these problems and mold a response into something better for ourselves, family and friends, neighbors and community. We must be more human-centered, not simply follow a human-centered methodology. It's time we leverage more of our skill for an even higher purpose: solving the world's most pressing social challenges. This talk examines the unique value and power of designers and design thinkers to impact social change. It will provide case studies, current examples and inspiration for designers aspiring to leave a bigger imprint on society.

On September 8, 2011, Design that Matters Director of Product Development, Elizabeth Johansen, co-facilitated a workshop at SOCAP11 alongside Sami Nerenberg of Design for America and Saul Garlick of Think Impact. The workshop was part of a series of design thinking workshops curated by Sarah Brooks.
In design, after immersing with the stakeholders, one of the most difficult and little-explained next steps is to take all of those observations and turn them into frameworks to guide the design going forward. Design that Matters, Think Impact, and Design for America co-created a workshop to give participants a crash course in framing challenges. Think Impact provided a case study and observations from the field. Then participants were asked to imagine a better future together.

iCamp: How might we help people to understand about Mental Health?
This iCamp was a particularly emotional one. During an iCamp, participants share their experiences. The men and women in the room shared real stories of mental health struggles that impacted family members, friends, and themselves.
The room was part brainstorm, part group therapy, as people spoke about the difficulties of finding the right care, of being targeted by judgemental people in their communities, and of the emotional toll of dealing with a loved one that was struggling, for example.
One story that was particularly striking involved a participant telling the story of how it took her family twenty years to find the right care for her family member.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

2. As
a
marketing
specialist
and
frequent
traveler,
I’ve
been
to
some
exotic
destinations.
But
never
to
Asia.
Phnom
Penh,
Cambodia
is
a
city
that
quickly
inspired
me
with
a
vibration
of
optimism
and
energy.
A
place
with
a
violent
history
that
was
emerging
and
growing
its
entrepreneurial
spirit
rapidly.
3. I
was
curious
about
was
how
Phnom
Penh
had
become
a
hub
for
innovation,
with
thousands
of
developers,
trainers,
NGO
and
government
employees,
and
how
the
InSTEDD
iLab
Southeast
Asia
fit
into
the
patchwork
of
the
region.
4. 2-
I
first
met
my
contact
Tharum
Bun,
the
communications
lead,
and
Channe
Suy
Lan,
the
leader
of
the
iLab,
via
Skype
calls
months
before,
as
we
worked
on
media
projects
together.
One
of
the
mantras
of
InSTEDD
is
“If
you
don’t
go,
you
won’t
know.”
It
was
not
until
6
months
later
that
I
would
have
a
chance
to
truly
experience
the
mantra
myself.
I
was
going
to
Cambodia
to
work
with
the
iLab,
to
understand
and
document
the
iLab’s
human
centered
design
approach.
5. I
would
begin
on
my
first
work-‐day
at
an
event
organized
with
the
Center
of
Disease
Control.
The
iLab
was
celebrating
the
official
launch
of
a
digital
disease
detection
initiative
with
the
CDC
Cambodia
(of
the
Ministry
of
Health).
I
watched
as
epidemiologists
and
reporters
conversed
with
executives
of
nonprofits
Skoll
Global

and
InSTEDD.
I
listened
to
a
translated

about
participatory
surveillance
by
Dr.
Ly
Sovann
of
the
CDC
Cambodia,
and
observed
a

6. When
I
first
visited
the
iLab
location,
I
noticed
that
in
the
breakout
room
that
two
developers
were
working
on
something,
so
I
peeked
in
and
learned
that
Channa
and
Mesa
were
working
on
a
project
for
the
World
Food
Program,
to
help
transition
a
paper-‐based
classroom
reporting
system
to
a
digital
one,
which
would
save
schools
and
provinces
months
of
otherwise
wasted
time
and
resources.
7. I
watched
over
the
next
week
as
they
improved
upon
their
work
plans
with
meetings
involving
different
stakeholders,
including
outside-‐training,
to
come
closer
to
a
solution
that
would
work
for
the
people
using
it.
I
learned
first-‐hand
that
the
iLab
approach
is
not
about
creating
something
and
shipping
it.
The
human-‐centered
approach
is
about
iterating,
and
looping
in
the
end-‐user
as
much
as
possible.
8. I
was
later
introduced
to
Thyda
and
Mouyleng,
two
young
coders,
who
started
at
the
iLab
as
interns,
but
were
now
writing
the
code
for
this
paper-‐to-‐digital
software.
I
was
impressed
with
the
work
ethic
of
the
team,
watching
as
they
chatted
and
coded
together
for
the
entire
day.
9. Every
morning
the
team
has
what’s
called
a
“stand-‐up
meeting”
where
they
explain
to
each
other
what
they
are
working
on,
and
any
difficulties
they
are
facing.
The
senior
developers
help
to
guide
the
junior
developers,
and
they
rotate
from
project
to
project,
allowing
for
new
perspectives
and
new
angles
on
existing
challenges
and
emerging
developments.
10. I
must
also
mention
the
variety
of
people
who
visit
the
iLab.
Every
day
I
watched
as
people
from
sectors
like
malaria
detection,
CDC
Cambodia,
and
rural
clean
water
distribution
visit
to
discuss
big
plans
and
existing
projects
with
members
of
the
development
team.
The
door
was
open
to
all
sectors,
big
and
small,
from
small
nonprofit
entrepreneurs
to
representatives
from
large
government
organizations.
I
had
never
before
seen
such
a
diverse
representation,
where
all
are
welcome
to
learn
from
each
other.
This
open
architecture
allows
a
free
flow
of
information
and
new
ideas.
11. Throughout
the
week
I
worked
closely
with
Tharum
at
the
iLab
to
plan
and
produce
media
assets
to
support
the
CDC
Cambodia
digital
reporting
launch.
We
worked
to
explain
what
the
iLab
was
doing,
and
who
was
involved
in
the
process.
We
interviewed
executives,
senior
coders,
and
junior
coders.
We
scripted,
translated,
and
transcribed
the
video.
We
worked
closely
with
a
video
team
and
produced
various
footage.
We
spent
hours
per
day
in
the
breakout
room,
planning
and
discussing,
and
yet
we
felt
energized
with
the
progress
we
were
making.
12. The
InSTEDD
iLab
mission
is
to
improve
global
health,
safety,
and
sustainable
development,
by
working
side-‐by-‐side
with
end-‐
users
in
the
field.
Sustainable
development
that
makes
an
impact.
That’s
what
the
iLab
is
about,
and
there
are
other
labs
in
the
world
that
have
adopted
a
similar
methodology.
This
agile
approach
is
what
makes
real
impact
while
reducing
waste
of
resources,
in
my
opinion.
It’s
an
approach
that
I
hope
to
see
replicated
in
more
places
across
the
world.
13. My
intention
was
to
visit
the
iLab
and
help
to
better
tell
its
story.
The
iLab
Southeast
Asia
is
a
special
place
that
is
creating
the
future
leaders
of
the
region.
The
open,
collaborative
approach
deserves
to
be
better
understood
so
that
more
organizations
can
adopt
similar
processes.
I
will
continue
to
work
together
with
the
iLab,
and
I
feel
confident
that
its
impact
will
continue
to
grow
greater,
and
help
create
additional
iLabs
around
the
world.
